2014 Energi, What a Techno Marvel: Welcome to 2020

This is our first hybrid car. I wish we hadn't waited so long. The car just makes perfect sense, and what a way to say "screw Big Oil!" We've only had the car about two weeks, and we are already very impressed. Ford did a great job with it. My fiancee drives it to work everyday, about 42 miles round trip. Our terrain is rural back roads, open highway and a bit hilly--great for mild hypermiling. He gets to work in all EV mode and regens a couple miles, and a few miles back toward home before entering hybrid mode. If he could plug in at work, we would rarely ever have to get gas. As it is, I expect we will need to get gas once a month. Wow.. This seems crazy! Very happy overall! Update - It's now been two years since we have owned the car. Issues to date are: turned down rear rotor, turned down front rotors, alignment (not covered under warranty), replace charger cable, replace steering component, replace charge port light, ongoing noise coming from brake at slow speed- unsolved. A recall has been issued on a door part. Ford will contact us to do replacement of component once parts are available. We are still very happy with the car @32,000 miles. No reduced battery capacity detected at this time. UPDATE - It's now been nearly 3 years that we've owned the car. We still love it. We've not had any more problems with the car, outside of the modem replacement that still does not connect. Otherwise it has been great, very dependable. We are still running the original tires at about 48,000 miles. Switching out the LLR with winter treads helps a lot, but those tires reduce MPG greatly. Funny story to share; When we first got this car, my eldest daughter made fun of it. It was "gay" she said. She's 20 now and a bit more mature. So my daughter wrecked her Ford Fiesta earlier this year (obviously not funny). She then borrowed her boyfriend's dad's car to get back and forth to work. Several weeks later the transmission went out in that car, so who does she call? Me and my husband, because we have two vehicles and need only one since I work from home. She asks to borrow a car, and at the time my husband needed the truck to bring home firewood from work, so I told her she had to use the car for a while. She drives 31 miles one way, so our turbo diesel truck would be costly for her. Anyhow, she ended up finally seeing the light and fell in love with the car. Now she is a proud owner too! Got a good deal on a '14 CPO a few weeks ago. She could not be happier with the car. Oh, and we are still able to get 28 miles of range in warm temps with no climate controls on. So we've had the car over 4 years now, and it's still a great car. Our all electric range is about 22 in warmer temps. We did have to have a front end alignment over the summer...there was also one done when the car was about a year old or so. Another issue since I reported to you last time...we recently we removed our tires to put on the snow tires, and noticed the rear tires were cupped to the inside. There are 67,000 miles on the car and we have an extended warranty in place, thankfully. My husband thinks it is a problem with bushings. Hope it is nothing major. Oh, and occasionally the yellow wrench comes on, but then it goes off. We took it to the garage and there are nothing comes up on the diagnostics. Only one regret about this car...wish we would have bought it as a CPO...we would have saved thousands. We discovered Dave Ramsey earlier this year and so we are paying it off early. Do yourself a favor and do not buy a brand new car. Get yourself a nice, low mileage CPO with a clean Carfax for cash, ok? About the cupping issue with the tires...we are now at 75,000 miles on those tires, and it seems to be an issue with how those tires wear. We will get one more season out of them, but we won't replace them with the OEMs. No major problems since I checked in last. We changed the windshield wipers. There is some odd wear going on at the hatch. It has worn off the paint on the left side, about the middle area. We are supposed to take it to the dealer to have them look at it. Otherwise nothing new to report. I'm so glad we bought an efficient car. Get a nice used one!

2013 C-Max Energi SEL with all the goodies.

Purchased last month (May), one of the last 2013's on the dealers lot and purchased for well below invoice and 0% for 72. Originally was going to purchase a Focus Electric, but with range anxiety and needing more room, the C-Max Energi was the smarter choice. Even with a battery pack in the trunk, can fit a stroller out back, will swallow groceries with ease, and with the rear seats down, a wheelchair will fit. Car sees 80% city driving and 20% freeway, achieving 120 mpge (EV mode) and 53 mpg (hybrid mode). On a 120v charge, range is 26 miles and haven't been to the gas station in over a month! Made the right choice with this car, love it! ****UPDATED REVIEW - 09/02/16**** Close to 2.5 years of ownership and continue to love this car, very fun, handles great, and fairly efficient too. For daily usage regular family usage, plenty of space to haul --My AER (Actual Electrical Range) from a single charged ranges from 23-25 and no hyper milling. --Have taken trips from OC to Santa Cruz to SF (which includes a steep grade and many hills) w/o any issues, average 75 mph, MPG = 37 with EV range leftover and little more than a quarter tank of gas left. This is with wife, 1 year old, luggage, and other stuff packed into the car. On the way back to LA observed 38 MPG. --Trip from OC to San Diego over the summer, saw 40 MPG going down, and 41 MPG on the way back. --Local trips form OC to Santa Monica/Hollywood/Pasadena/Costa Mesa, etc observed 53 - 57 MPG. --Current Lifetime MPG = 150.2. Haven't looked at Lifetime MPGe number so will update this later. --Car is driven in pure EV 85% of the time since purchased. Gas station visits are anywhere from 3-4 months between fill-ups. NEGATIVES - not very many but interior wise, door card for front doors feel flimsy and squeaks when pushed in. Car is still under warranty, so will take it for that. ****UPDATED REVIEW - 10/16/19**** --still a wonderful car. Current mileage = 50,972. --commute has changed slightly since last update. --installed Level 2 charging at home. --AER now ranges from 16-18, getting about 4.1 - 4.3 kWh from empty to full charge before gas engine kicks in. --est. HVB capacity 76% thus has degraded about 24%.

I've had my new 2014 CMax Energi for 1 month and I'm loving it. I haven't been to the gas station yet. I'm averaging 102 MPG with a +/- 20 mile daily commute and 2 100 mile trips over Christmas. The few days I've used the heat do make me wonder how much efficiency will drop with a/c use come summer. It has so much power and handling ability, you will forget you are being green! UPDATE 7/14/2016 - 17 months in I'm averaging 124MPG overall @ 17,500 miles, including two 1,200 mile road trips on gas. Other than the climate control, I still love this car. I don't like the auto-climate. It doesn't drain right and smells musty some times and even sprays a mist out of the vents occasionally. Ford couldn't find anything wrong when I brought it in. Jan 2018 ...Ford did eventually fix the climate control issues under warranty and get it working correctly. Last summer the range on a full charge declined 25-30 percent. Florida is a harsh environment for batteries with the garage temperature solidly in the nineties for much of the summer. The battery capacity has degraded. When the car was new I got a range of 30 miles without running a/c or heat. It's down to 20-22. In researching this I've learned several things.... I should have programmed the car to charge overnight, when temperatures were at the coolest...... And very few electric car manufacturers warranty the battery against degradation. Ford will only replace the battery under warranty if it doesn't charge at all. Initially, the car rarely used gas on my typical day. I now usually have the motor kick on for the last few miles of my commute. 4+ years into driving my CMax Energi I still enjoy the car very much. 5+ years.... still loving my CMax Energi! 6 Years, still very happy. Replaced a pretty expensive wheel bearing this year at about 60,000 miles but my daily commute includes a few miles of brick roads which probably contributed to that.

Great Car, Much Better Than Hoped For

Have 2000 miles on the car so far and loving it. Big pluses: seats are very supportive and comfortable. Driving is nimble and quick, dare I say sportscar like? Driving country roads is quite fun. Freeway driving is great; I'd have no problem taking this on a long road trip. Driving in all electric mode has a great feeling to it, hard to describe, but there is a direct response to it, not sluggish at all. I plug it into a normal outlet at night, fully charged every morning. So far, combined MPG is 51, and I do not have driving habits that promote good mileage. Only major drawback is the fact the back storage is not flat when the back seats are down, due to the batteries.

I don't have a set drive to work. I travel all over the bay area with distances from 5 to 100 miles. I find myself often running a 25 mile loop ending with a steep uphill quarter mile grade with about 5% battery left. I live in Northern California where the weather is extremely mild and I use the air conditioner less than 5% of the time. The air conditioner sucks the battery up. I would not like this car if I needed it. My overall time spent with the car I am averaging 120mpg. My electricity is free. I also have a Volt. The volt is more efficient between 25 and 110 miles. I have found the C-max's ICE is a little more efficient.

Stepped out of an '11 Prius lift gate into the C-Max Energi. No comparison. Build quality on the Energi is superb, not the tin can experience I left behind. Don't get me wrong; the Pri was a great car, but this car should have a Lincoln badge on it. C-Max feeds data and info to me I have craved. I've learned to finesse the pedal to maximize range & you will, too. More mass with this car equals better coasting and a solid solid feel. I catch myself having qualms about being in a mini-SUV b/c of the higher seating position, then remind myself 'it's OK' - the seating position and view is awesome. Interior quality is upscale. I thank Ford for giving us in the USA a taste of the European Focus.

Owned Cmax since 1/1/13 you will get this mileage (85mpg and increasing) if you drive less than 40 miles between charges with like 1/2 freeway. If you drive alot more than that a day you will probably do better with another car. Nice drive and havent been back to dealer yet.

Have been driving this car for about 6,000 miles without a problem. With the federal tax credit and CA rebate, the cost is the same as the regular CMAX hybrid. Nice seating position, pleasant interior, good pickup, and after figuring out the battery limitations, getting about 80-90 mpg in my daily 25-30 mile commutes. The car is very quiet and reasonably pleasant even on 400 mile drives (although only get about 38 mpg on gas alone @ 70 mph). The extra battery does limit space and may be a deal breaker if you have a family of 4. Much nicer drive than our prior Prius and Camry hybrids. hybrids

We've had the Energi since it was new (now at 44k). We've had a couple of electronic component/software issues, but these were resolved and we haven't had any problems for the last 20k miles. We are getting 15-20 miles per charge on electric only. Given that we use it especially for around town traveling, we get a consistent 110 miles per gallon, and around 1300 miles per gas tank, sometimes up to 2000 per tank. However, used in hybrid mode only it gets around 40 mpg. Given the somewhat lower price of electricity at home (and at Whole Foods where it is free), it probably saves us some money in the long run. I avoid going to the gas station for 3-4 months. I don't like the Sync entertainment/Navigation system much - I end up using my Android phone which is much more useful and easy to use for navigation. I wish Android Auto had been available back in 2013! The bluetooth does sync well with my phone. The other aspects - acceleration, road noise, handling, seating comfort are all good. I tried a Volt recently and found that the C-Max's visibility is 100% better. I also like the auto-opening/closing trunk. Naturally, the battery takes up part of the trunk - but that hasn't really been a problem in daily life. I think that ideally the family would have another car for long trips both because it really doesn't maximize the utility of the short electric-only distance, but also because it doesn't have a spare tire - if you get a flat, you have to be towed or have a new/fixed tire delivered to your car (or pray that the tire service mobility kit works).

Hey its not the sexiest car on the road but it is roomy, quiet, comfortable and simply awesome for MPGe. In 21,000 miles I have used about $45 in gasoline. I have a level 2 charger so life is easier. I also do not have a long commute and most of my driving is within the electric only range of about 30 miles. My only complaint is the reduced cargo capacity due to the batteries. IMHO I believe FORD needs to: 1. Up the battery size to provide 100 miles + electric range. 2. Up the size of the onboard charger to speed charging of a larger battery 3. integrate the battery better so as to not take so much cargo room. I am OK if this reduces the gasoline tank size. These changes would take the C-Max Energi from a great car to a world-class leader in my books.

Do your homework before purchasing

I purchased the C-Max Energi with the thought of driving the vehicle only a few miles per day, plugging it in at night, and almost never having to visit a gas station. The big problem with that is the lithium ion battery is charged, but the 12 volt battery which initially cranks the engine isn't being charged at the same time. So what happens? You go out to start the car, and the 12 volt battery is dead because the 12 volt is gradually being drained. The local dealer said that's the case because the Energi has no alternator. So if you don't drive extended miles every few days or so, the 12 volt battery will gradually be drained. This happened twice to me.

I've had my c-Max Energi for 8 months. I live in a town of about 200,000 and drive about 25 miles per day with occasional road trips 2-3 hours away. I live in the south, so I haven't had the recharging issue others report. I am getting 100 miles per gallon and using about $23 per month in electricity. It is roomy and comfortable, has great pick-up, and easy to park. I love it.

Zero gas weekly commuting

I charge at home & at work so the battery easily covers my 15 mile commute each way. I use zero gas for my usual weekly work commute which is really nice. The battery shows 9 miles range left when I arrive at work, and 6 miles range left when I arrive at home. More hills. The breaking regen system is very good. I regen a mile or two in estimated range at each of 2 or 3 stop lights caught on my commute. So far in longer weekend trips and road trips I average around 38 to 39 mpg after the battery charge is finished with EV mode and normal hybrid mode kicks in. This will likely improve when the weather warms up. Embedded cellular card. You can see car location, charge status by phone/web

My company installed some charging stations which prompted me at least look at some plug-in vehicles. I just couldn't bring myself to consider the Prius (plus it only goes 11 miles on electric), and the Volt was really nice, but just too small. That left the C-MAX, and I couldn't be happier. I am absolutely amazed at the quality of the car. It feels great all around, and I swear, they fixed everything I hated about every car I have had before it. I plug it in at work everyday and that is it. My round-trip commute is about 20 miles, so it really gets me home and back. On the weekends, I just drive it as a hybrid and it works great. The only thing I don't like is the turning radius.

First Ford ever- had a 2007 Prius, and while loved the mileage didn't like the low-rent interior. Got this car, loved the interior, the solid-feeling doors, the high-quality plastics, leather seats - and the price w/Costco's auto program. First problem - a rattle developed. Dealer kept the car overnight (gave me a Lincoln MKZ as a free rental - nice!); turned out the antenna was loose. With 10k miles now, a few interior squeaks have developed. Mileage is great - averaging about 49 mpg so far. Electric range can vary from 18- 25 miles (okay, but....). regens nicely coming down from Big Bear to a full "tank"! MyFord Mobile app doesn't work well. Value charge feature - fantastic. Love the car!

Love this car! I looked at other Hybrids (foreign and domestic), but when I drove this.... it was the one. Drives great, very quiet, smooth, roomy, and lots of head room. I have had it for almost 6 months and rarely buy gas. We installed a 220 charger about a month after the purchase and very glad I did. Charging time went from about 6 hours to 2 hours. If you go on trips around 20 miles, you may never buy gas again. I wanted something comfortable on the highway. This fits the bill. We have a Lincoln MKT as well, and this seems just as quiet and comfortable but uses much less gas. Just went on a 500 mile road trip and averaged about 40 mpg. Around town I have got as much as 175 MPG on a tank of gas. I went from a sporty Diesel and wasn't sure if it would feel as great to drive. It may not be as sporty, but it is great to drive. I hope Ford keeps making this so I can buy another in 4 years. Maybe buy then they can increase the cargo space some, but with 2 people on a road trip, we can always use the back seat.

Overall, this was a fun car to drive and own. I really enjoyed driving past the gas stations! Stylish and modern for an SUV. The fun ended after 11 months of owning the car. Finding parts to repair damage to the charge port = 6 weeks in the shop. Estimate for finding parts to repair passenger doors due to damage while parked at the mall 4 weeks. The transmission began slipping and things went downhill from there. Three trips to the dealer (must be a specific, qualified dealer by the way) and still no resolution. The dealer has been really nice through this but the transmission module does not exist anywhere in the world, apparently. It's been waiting on the transmission unit for 59 days (I chose to wait, hoping to get my car back fixed). The last 18 days a mystery unit has been "in transit" but did not appear at the dealer as promised 10 days ago and I have not been successful getting the dealer or the regional Ford CSM to locate it. Ford is currently working with me to resolve my situation and get me into another vehicle. It was a fun car, I felt really good driving something green that I actually liked. Loved the "Go Times" where I could program the car to have the interior at a certain temp by a certain time of the day. So on icy cold mornings hubby went to defrost his Prius while my C-Max purred silently melting the mess from mine. Obviously this feature hits your MPG rate pretty hard. It addressed my wish for a green SUV. I routinely saw 58-60 MPG electric/gas combined for my commute. The first 21 - 26 miles were electric. My weekend errands were 100% electric. :) In the winter, however, between driving conditions and the Go times I saw it drop to 38-40 MPG. It did lack some space due to the batteries and not having a spare felt almost "naked". Maybe redesign the hatch to be a door and mount the spare there? The electronics were annoying, even for a technology professional such as myself, and almost pointless. MyFord could do more to inform you. For instance, I ran the Vehicle Health Report because the engine light came on. It informed me to check the dash for a check engine icon... Wow, how helpful! Switching lanes on the highway was a bit rough but for the most part the ride was comfortable, next to no interior noise. The car rides low which was an issue for snow storms and mud season on my dirt road. It could use a little more height. But, it was easy to get into and out of front and back seats. Lumbar support was a nice feature that I appreciated. Ambient lighting was a nice touch that allowed me to customize the lighting to my mood. Love not having a gas cap. Having a charging outlet that is always on should be standard on all vehicles, not just this one! I hope Ford works the kinks out of this car and add a 4 wheel drive option. There is a market for fuel efficient SUVs, despite with some automakers believe. Making it 4 wheel as opposed to all wheel will give the driver the option of when they want to come out of fuel efficiency to improve driving. I was forced to shovel to the ground after every storm as snow tires and Low gear do not improve grip at all. I got stuck in my own driveway a couple times which was embarrassing to call for a tow truck to help get me out.

CMax Energi 171,000 miles

Update November 2016: at approximately 160,000 miles the CMax energi started making a "whiring" sound during deceleration. Turns out bad transmission. $7000 to replace and Edmunds value of this 3-year old high mileage car is only $5000. Quite a wake-up, my cost per mile for ownership of this car is now shot. Many other better values out there Update May 2016: So almost 3- years of ownership and well over 150K miles. Car has never been in the shop except to replace the 12V "starting battery" for $140. All I have done to this car is rotate tires and change fluids. Typically 15,000-18,000 miles between oil changes. I am getting a little wind noise from one of the rear doors, I think it's the seal. Other than that the car has been flawless. Original post: I purchased my Energi in August 2013. So far the car has been flawless other than some bugs in the "Sync" system that have been fixed by a software update. I typically drive 200 miles per day on Southern California freeways commuting to various construction sites. I often drive into Los Angeles, the deserts and mountains for work. This car is very comfortable at freeway speeds, where I drive with the flow of traffic, often 80 mph. At the speeds I drive and distances between charges, I am very happy with my 42+ mpg. I am by no means a hyper-miler, and I carry hundreds of pounds of gear in the car every day.

An SUV Lover's Hybrid-Plugin

2014 Ford C-Max Energi SEL 4dr Wagon (2.0L 4cyl gas/electric hybrid CVT)
13 of 15 people found this review helpful

I. Love. It. Bought 1 yr ago. Waited to post review 'til had driven through MA winter & had a yrs cost data. Total cost for year: $0.06/mile (SUV = $0.19/mile). Overall mpg = 97 mpg (SUV = 18 mpg). Costs $0.96/night to charge, using reg 110V plug in garage. For full yr, spent $283 on 8 tanks of gas + 365 days x $0.96/night electricity = $633. Went 10,321 miles. Maintenance was once at 10K miles, cost $0. Did amazingly well in winter w stock tires; heavy weight + low center of gravity help a lot. Only garaged on the 2-feet-of-snow days. ADMISSION: I learned how to drive a hybrid and am as diligent as possible about it. Feels weird at 1st but now normal. Makes big diff!

Rear main seal leak ($1700 repair) & Low gearissue

5 of 5 people found this review helpful

Since there are not a lot of cmax energi vehicles on the road compared to other models I feel this review will inform a lot of used and possibly new car buyers of potential costly problems with the cmax energi. I need a $1700 rear main seal replaced to stop an oil leak and $100 software update to stop the car engine turning on when the battery is full in L gear. Also I recently spent $500 on tires and alignment because we had really bad wear. GET THE CAR INSPECTED before you buy used. Have a mechanic pull back the plastic cover under the engine and inspect for leaks. Also test the car in Low gear immediately after recharging the EV battery to full and let it regen going down hill (more on that below). Check the wear on the tires! POSITIVE NOTE: I will say that outside of these issues, I do like the car. My wife likes it a lot too. Lots of upgrades and features in the car. I bought my 2013 cmax energi used with 98kmiles in 2015 for ~$11k. I have had electric, plug in hybrid and gas. The benefits of an electrified powertrain is lower maintenance costs and longer lasting. I figured this plug in should last longer than a conventional hybrid (like a prius taxi) with less major repairs if any at all. To my future self: don’t buy first year a car model is made. I get the feeling Ford slapped this together without a lot of testing or R&D. My Cmax odometer says 116k miles but the car display says 82k gas engine and 34k miles electric. I guess the rear main seal started leaking a lot earlier. This to me is a design flaw. Google cmax rear main seal leak and find the cmax forums and you will see many posts with rear main seal leaks at 28k, 48k miles, and even after repair leaking again 5k miles later! Thank you reviewer who posted at 160k miles his transmission went out and repair cost $7000! I realized that my leak could become a major problem if not fixed! But since I am out of warranty if I pay $1700 and it leaks again after 2 years, unlimited mile repair warranty I have to pay $1700 again. Also what if the reason that reviewers trans went out was not the seal!? It probably was though, oil leaks out, transmission breaks. FYI My car is only worth about $8000 on kbb.com with 116,000 miles. Ford did offer me a $300 discount on the repair after calling them many times and reminding them of all the Ford’s I have owned (4) in my lifetime. I also mentioned this would be the last Ford I buy if they can’t recognize this as a design flaw or help me with the cost of repair. $1400 is still a lot of money. Ford HQ made me take my vehicle back for an inspection before even trying to work out a discount (inspection was free with $30 oil change at a Ford dealer). I can’t afford the $1400 but will consider doing it soon. They only gave me 30 days to take their discounted offer. On to the tires briefly…Get an alignment! And rotate your tires. I’ve seen uneven wear in two of these cmax so I think its something you should pay attention to in order to avoid buying new tires before you need to. Not a biggie but something to pay attention to. We had tow in and tow out on our wheels and the tires were bumpy. Could have been the last owner not paying attention. Rides much better now. The engine turning on when the battery has been fully charged only happens in Low gear when I pull out of the garage and coast immediately down a slight hill incline the engine kicks on and revs pretty loud. I now never put the car in Low gear until the battery has depleted a little. When it’s fully charged I leave it in Drive not Low. A dealer told me it’s ~$100 to fix apparently it’s a software issue. Ford has no recall on this that fixes it. I have experienced this in another cmax energy as well as mine recently. If you pull over turn car off then on again the engine won’t go back on and it will run on Electric as designed. I hope this has helped. I hope Ford stands behind their products and stop just sending me to the dealer to pad their pockets when this is not a common issue in any other hybrid that I know of. I also hope that this car can get permanently fixed and I can drive it with no other issues for years until I purchase my next car. And to Ford’s credit I do respect they never took a bail out in 2008 but if the car buying public keeps getting penalized for their poor designs with expensive repairs I will not buy a Ford product again. I cannot understand why a 100+ year old company that has engineered and built 400 million cars cannot design a car that has a better crucial seal!

The Ford C-Max Energi continued to perform flawlessly, well over seven 1/2 years. The average lifetime mpg-e for the car was about 65 mpge, which included several long trips using all gas. Besides the great mileage, the car was still fun to drive and the Energi’s comfort and efficiency make it a great way to travel. The car is well made, has great visibility, a quiet cabin, and lots of appointments that made the driving experience easy and fun. We have since sold the C-Max to our daughter in California where it can be driven in the HOV lanes and have replaced it with a Tesla Model Y. We hope it continues the tradition of reliability of our Ford.

I had high hopes for this car and I am certain it was a dud or lemon in it's class and I need to try another or different electric type car, but the whole experience has left a bad taste in my mouth. This car does however have some great pros: -Gas mileage is awesome. I can go 4 weeks without getting gas if I am only driving in town and using the battery that I charge over night. sleek design and the charing port was great and easy to use. -I can see out of all the windows and have minimal blind spots. -voice activated commands for turning on music, calling people/ answering calls. music/phone controls on steering to help keep eyes on the road. cons: -doors not working -over 9 manufature recalls. -no software updates -makes odd sounds and gives you the feeling is it broken -different procedures to jump, but doable Below are my experiences if you are interested or have had similar issues: purchased car 3/20/17. 24 hours after leaving the lot, this car broke down. The dealership fixed it for free after not being able to diagnose the problem for 2 weeks and shipped it off to a different ford dealer. 4/2017: car still not working right and simple look over by a mechanic found hoses were switched in a working part of the engine. fixed and on our way 9/2017: software update needed but customer service on MyFordTouch says the software by Ford is not longer supported. Cannot use sirius XM or get vehicle reports or use GPS, go-timers, or diagnostics. 12/2017: transmission leak and 480.00 repair after mechanics say the problem was there for a long period of time and not caught by previous service. Regular oil changes commence throughout our ownership. 2/2018: Doors won't open. The back passenger and drivers doors malfunction and do not open. Door panel simple pops off and door will not open. The door clips may be bad according to googling. After taking in to get tips from the dealer, we tightened the screws in the door panels, however both of them pop off when you try to open the door. 6/2018: tail light replacement does not work and is out during the day, but illuminates at night. numerous traffic stops and numerous light replacements and still is "burnt out' in the daytime. 8/2018:When turning the vehicle on, the car alerts that the key is not inside the vehicle when in reality, it is. 9/2018: when turning the vehicle on, the system warns that the key is not detected and will not engage. After resetting the software, it is not turning on. Placing the key in the signal inlet will only turn vehicle on. and it continues to state the key is not in the vehicle as your are traveling down the road. 11/2018: car no longer starts unless jumped or plugged into battery for long periods of time 12/2018 car has been towed to dealership from whence it came. 2/2019 battery for regular engine is dead. Nee one purchased but drains. Getting the battery out of this vehicle is a nightmare. Be prepared with rachey sets with multiple sizes and the batter is in the back of the car behind bumper. 3-5 2019 battery continues to drain. Took in to fix and says nothing is wrong. 8/2019 wheels squeal 9/2019 undercarriage pops off for no reason. This vehicle is not driven hard to merit body style to fall off 10/2019 new battery purchased again 11/2019 larger electric battery only only charges to 16 mi roundtrip instead of usually 28. 2/2020 wheels still squeal 4/2020 undercarriage next to wheels fell off 6/2020 when driving emergency message to "pull over and stop safely pops up on the dash. When taken in for diagnostic it gives error cod P3E1E and they have no idea what that means. (Ford dealer...have no idea what that code is..) DO NOT BUY THIS CAR!

I am generally happy with the car. I realize it is the first generation, but Ford could have done better. I ordered it with every electric option and yet I do not have memory seat, daytime running lights or blind spot alert. I requested all of the above, and apparently it is not yet available. I the stated electric range of 20 miles is not even close. I drive very conservatively and I do not get 15 miles on a charge. The ride and handling are excellent. The road noise is non existent.

Bought this car 2 months ago and have been driving it to and from work mostly. The concept is very good -- i.e. a plugin hatchback. The car handles fairly well and the motors do what they are supposed to do. The electronics are not there yet, however. Specifically, the charging software, the navigation and the voice recognition are all downright horrible and have really ruined the experience for me.

First off, this car gets great gas mileage, especially if you plug it in every night. It's comfortable, easy to get into and quiet. Problem is the sync system by microsoft. Big fail. it also has myFord touch, a system that you can see how you car is doing and program some of the features for the car using your cell phone. It does not even start to work. It was one of the reasons I wanted the car, because I thought it would be neat to program the charging times, see the charging, start the climate control before leaving home or work. It operates on the obsolete 2G cell system, that is currently being dismantled by At&t. because of this many of the advertised features of this car do NOT work. It also failes to sync with my phone properly. If you just looking for great gas mileage and do not care about the advertised technology available thru myford touch, then it's a good car. If you have any expectations that the info-entertainment system will do any thing other than play the radio, you will be highly frustrated and disappointed. This keeps me from loving the car, and makes me feel like Ford lied to me by saying these features worked. I'm going to drive it a couple of years, but this will be the last Ford or Microsoft product for me.

We got this car for my wife and I've ended up driving it more than she does. This thing has surprisingly great acceleration for a hybrid, and it handles like a go-cart. It looks pretty boring on the outside so you get a lot of surprised looks when you pass people on the highway or jump off the line at a stoplight to get ahead. The ride is incredibly smooth, especially in EV mode, and the interior is as nice as anyone needs. We live about 10 miles from my wife's work and the EV battery lasts long enough to get her there and back without using a drop of gas. The biggest drawback is the complete lack of storage in the front seats. I don't know how you build a car after 2010 without a space to hold a phone, but there is literally no storage aside from the cup holders, door cubbies, or center console. The touch screen is also a long reach, which makes it difficult to use while driving, and the entertainment system is pretty slow. The navigation runs at about 5 frames per second and connecting a phone or changing audio sources can be cumbersome. When the engine kicks on it can be a little jarring, but it's smooth while driving, and highway mileage isn't great. It doesn't get the best mileage in it's class, but if you want more from a hybrid than just good gas mileage this one is for you.

Great overall car with lots of headroom F&R, fantastic utility and cargo carrying (hauled a few dishwashers and other large objects with seats folded down, brakes will last a long time with regen braking. Cons: when new was getting about 25 miles on electric as car and battery aged down to 15.... Ford support OK but not all dealers know how to work on plug in hybrids... Ford fights to replace battery even under warranty....

Alternative to Prii and Leaf

We have lots of Prii in our area, and everyone likes the mileage but doesn't enjoy the car. This car has a much nicer standard interior than Prii or the Leaf and gets excellent mileage. Our daily driving is often under 20 miles so we're mostly electric, but when we go over that range, we've averaged 70mpg over twelve months of driving. One bonus with this car is it's small on the outside and has tons of space on the inside (except for the trunk). I'm 6'1" and have at least 5" of headroom. The small trunk hasn't been a big deal for us, but if you frequently carry 4-5 people and need space, it could be. When we priced used c-maxes vs similar Leafs (with leather, nav, etc), they were similarly priced, and the c-max can go long distances. 2 years later (2019), we continue to like this car. Long-term mpg is 71 mpg, including some long-distance trips. A great way to dip your toes into electric without breaking the bank. The used prices on these are an incredible value. We haven't needed it, but the dealer included a 10-year warranty which I'd recommend since Ford is getting out of the car business and going all-in on supporting big gas-guzzlers.

We owned the C-Max Energi SEL with Skylight for 2 years and were thoroughly pleased on every aspect of the car (except rear volume). We averaged close to 66 mpg overall. Took several long trips and average over 40 mpg. The C-Max was very smooth and quiet on the highway and handled perfectly. The Ford Sync system was great and the Nav and Back-up Camera were excellent. Unfortunately, the C-Max was totaled in an accident and we purchased another 2014 but included he Parking Assist Package and not skylight. I would highly recommend the Ford C-Max Energi for everyone that is looking for an electric/hybrid.

CMAX Energi 2013 with 302 option: Bought on Labor day weekend with good deal. Very good interior. Leather seats , Nice looking dash board, Plenty of leg room, looks very roomy, gives compact SUV look. Pros : 1. You can control lock/unlock, set your desired temp from Web or Mobile app. You can see where car is parked from Mobile app. You can schedule time to charge. 2. Sends emails or SMS when charge is going to start and expected time to finish. You can configure all kind of alerts. 3. Navigation,Phone, Climate Control & Radio Voice Commands works fine. 4. No issue in setting up Garage opener. 5. Car is much powerful than Prius and handles very well.

I have had my CMAX for just about a year and 14K miles. But now it is at the dealership waiting a for a high voltage controller that is backordered with NO estimated time to be available. I have a crummy base model Ford Focus instead of my loaded CMAX. I just hope it goes past 30 days as on the 31st day I will be filing a lemon law claim. The car is great but not if they can't get parts and Ford will not give you something decent for a loaner or call you back. I was finally able to reach someone higher up at Ford and had a Ford Escape for a little over a month. Since getting my car back it has worked fine with the exception of the voice commands using Sync. I don't believe they are connected but pretty much every command even simple ones like "Call Home" result in unknown please repeat. Saying call Jim results in bringing up a list of names the first 2 might be possibilities but bank does not sound like Jim. Gas mileage is OK but driving on the highway or the battery depleted results in a consistent 38 MPG. I like the car but do wish the battery was a little bigger.

On acceleration & deceleration, one can hear & feel a slap in the drivetrain that is unmistakably wrong. Two trips to Ford service & multiple drive train parts R&R'd did not solve. Ford's eventual answer was... "All the Energi's make that noise". Ford's 'MyTouch' , Nav & entertain system, is truly a lesson in anger management with it's delayed / non-responses. Overall, the car's quality & operation is low compared to its sticker price. But woe to you should you need assist from Ford HQ resolving any issues. Their customer service rates a zero and would test any Preacher's patience.

Loving the C/Max Energi

Just purchased the new C/MAX Energi. I wanted the fuel economy, but was concerned whether it would provide the power I wanted. I wasn't disappointed. Nicely appointed, this car drives like a dream. But be careful, no road noise leads you to go a little faster than you think. Had it to 85 on the highway today, thinking I was doing about 60. Seats are extremely comfortable with great lumbar support. Smooth ride, excellent acceleration - but very little storage space for long trips. You can go about 100 miles for the same cost of a gallon of gas, depending on where you live. The only downside - they are hard to find! If are lucky to find one at your dealer, grab it before it's gone.

This is my second Ford, and it is definitely my last. The gas mileage is good, but it is built so cheaply I am embarrassed I bought it. I have had it for 3 months and it is in service for the third time. It has already had an oil leak, the rear passenger door doesn't open due to the entire inner door panel falling repeatedly, and the front passenger window doesn't close completely without many tries and frustration. And as I was taking it in to service, one of the plastic covers in the back seat fell off. I paid way too much for this car, and now I'm stuck for years with it, as I can't afford another new car. I do not recommend a C-Max unless you like hanging out at the dealership.

The charge error message "fault in charging!" I cannot believe the poor design that cost the owner hundreds! I have own cars since the 70s and this is the 1st time a signal light bulb fails within 2-years! I have a truck/2004 and I never had to replace any lights to this day. Cheap!!!

Did we just get a bad seed? Miss the Prius.

I see a lot of people pleased with their Cmax Energi, so maybe we just picked a bad apple. We bought this for the fact it would get me in the commuter lane and at the time there were no all electric options (other than Tesla) that I could comfortably rely on to make my round trip to work. Here's my take after about 4 years and just hitting 60k miles. Fuel economy - Battery has never gotten me as far, regardless of whether I drive freeway or local streets, as what Ford said it would get me. I'm lucky to get 13-14 miles on a charge, and I was expecting 20+ based on what the dealer and the Ford brochure suggested. Comfort - A much harsher ride and seats are not as comfortable as what we were used to with our 2004 Prius. Tires are lower profile and I know it's touted as being more sporty than our old Prius, but it's really not been a comfortable ride for trips out of the area. Road noise - Very noisy, especially if you are on stretches of freeway that are concrete vs asphalt. Tried to find replacement tires that might help the issue, but the difference is minimal at best. FYI - do not go to the snow, you are not supposed to use chains or cable chains due to the very low clearance of the front tires. Interior layout - Various controls are, in my opinion, in odd places. It still just doesn't feel natural after 4 years of driving the car. Infotainment system - Voice recognition is terribly inconsistent, and anything from asking the car to dial a phone number to asking it to find a destination has been very unreliable. If you turned the car off with the radio on, would you expect it to come back on with the same station when you get back in the car? Ours doesn't. 3/4 of the time you get in, it says it's on, no audio is coming out, and the only way to get it to actually turn on is to change the station (local dealer brushed it off like it was not that big a deal). GPS software is way out of date (like it doesn't recognize roads that have been in place in this area for 10-20 years). System was able to recognize iPhone, but has had ongoing problems since we switched to a new carrier and no longer use iPhones. Storage space - The battery eats up a ton of space, but that was clear from the first time we looked at the car. Reliability - Just got stuck with a $1350 bill for repairs associated with an injector failing. That stunk, and I question why this happened at 59k miles on the Ford when our Prius went for 170k miles without having an injector fail. Other random issues include the AC spontaneously failing to work on the seemingly hottest summer days, wind noise, backup camera is dysfunctional, and foot sensor operated lift gate rarely works as advertised (and seems to only respond to my foot which really makes my wife mad). In summary I have to say I'm disappointed and will not be looking at Ford products in the future. Even from a service standpoint, our experience with Toyota service centers was superior to what we have experienced through Ford.

Love my Energi hybrid plug in!

Coming from owning mostly Hondas and Toyotas, I started to get bored of them and went the German route. After a couple VWs and a BMW, I got really tired of fixing them. Me wrenching on the cars myself, I found I had very little time to maintain them after having a toddler. After some time and my wife driving around a Lexus CT200H (basically a Prius), I was really adamant about getting the same reliable drivetrain since hers now has 230k+ miles with very little maintenance. I was on a Prius V mainly because of the room it offered. I had a 2003 525i wagon which was nice to have all the cargo space so I wanted something like it without having to buy an SUV. Well, after some frustrated searches of trying to find the V used with the whole trim package I wanted, it was nearly impossible due to the rarity of the car. Along came the awareness of the Ford C-Max. I knew about the car before as I had seen it before and thought that it was a nice looking car...but never really looked into it...well, this time around, it really caught my eye after seeing I can get an almost new one with low miles for cheaper than I can get the used Prius V with 60k miles. I read lots of reviews and different opinions and after looking online at different sites trying to find a mint one with all the extras I wanted (moonroof, leather, white color, etc), I found my car and bought it sight unseen pending on how it looked in person of course. Once I got there after a 3 hour drive, my wife and I were super impressed. Love this car! Drives, looks and feels so much nicer than the other Priuses I had already test drove and now my wife's 2012 Lexus feels old in comparison of how it drives, cabin comfort, road noise, options, etc. I had not even driven one before but I knew enough that I would be satisfied. I mainly drive on EV mode and I believe the previous owner did too as the lifetime MPG numbers were 68mpg. It is now down to 63 mpg after a couple road trips on hybrid mode. Already drove it 1000 miles in about 2 weeks. So far, super satisfied with my purchase and I feel great about it! We shall see how it does in the long term...I will update this review at a later date. Ford, please keep bringing these awesome cars you have been making for Europe for years to the U.S.!

I have loved this car since the day I got it. The $7500 federal rebate and the carpool lane stickers more than paid for the plug in upgrade from the hybrid. No repairs except a new screen that was about $300. Still getting @ 20 miles off battery before gas kicks in. It is the perfect car for errands. I am ordering a Mache E tomorrow and passing this one on to my daughter.

I love this car I’ve had high end cars and gotta say this - by far this is the best. I had Mercedes, Bmw and all of them cost a fortune to repair. This one, never has had a problem. I’m thrilled

Although the electric battery is waning after 9 years, I can still get about 75mpg in summer. It charges on a wall outlet in about 5 hours. Except for the hatchback area, the interior is very spacious and comfortable even for a tall person. Adults can fit comfortably in the back seat. There is good storage in the glovebox, center console and inside the doors. The size of the hatchback area is limited by the battery so less than optimal. The other bugaboo is the poorly accessible location of the regular car battery. Replacement is costlier than it should be. The car handles great and has had no major issues since I have owned it, about 4 years. If it weren't for the electric battery losing power, I'd keep it forever. I'm planning on another 3 years at this point.

Ford does not solve the many problems this car has.

The Ford "Sync" feature does not work properly. The voice recognition feature does not understand anyone I know. Ford is aware of the problem and has installed several software updates, it still does not work. This makes the GPS feature useless. If GM "On-Star" is a "10", I would rate the Ford Sync a 1. It is very frustrating to try to use. The car has just stopped running on two occasions and required towing back to dealer. I was told there was a "computer glitch". The car has NO SPARE TIRE!!!!! No jack or lug wrench. They put a can of "fix a flat" under the seat and if that doesn't work, you will need to be towed!!! How stupid is that????

Headlights burn out

If you want a car that will last, don't buy this one. I had to replace what I thought was a head light bulb, but turned into an headlight assembly, burned out and cost well over $600.00. I had to replace my battery-not the hybrid over 200.00. I purchased an extend warranty but that didn't cover it, burned out headlight assembly that actually showed it burned, which might have been a problem if it caught fire. I leased it and later decided to purchase it, boy was I upside down. I use it to commute for the carpool stickers and it doesn't hold it's value much, so if you only drive around town, good, but get any mileage over 15,000 a year, this is not the car for you, get a Toyota Prius, it will last and also hold value, I have one of these too. Beware because Ford doesn't stand by their car or parts.
