My 5th and best General Motors Truck

ST. Larson, 07/06/2018
2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 4dr Double Cab SB (5.3L 8cyl 6A)

I have owned six GM truck products, starting with a 1977 Silverado 15HD to my current 2017 Silverado LT 4dr Double Cab 4WD SB (5.3L 8cyl 6A) All Star package. I have had 1500’s, a 2500 and 3500 variations, all extended or Crew cab versions. This doesn’t make me an expert on Chevy trucks but I do have lots of experience with the brand. My favorite was my 2002 2500 LS HD but that’s ancient history now. My newest, the 2017 LT, has been in my driveway for a year now, used primarily for towing a 30’ travel trailer. I have about 7K miles on the odometer as I write this. Two of my past trucks, the 2500 HD and 3500 were also used to tow travel trailers. I am writing this evaluation for my 2017 as a towing vehicle. There are many trim levels of Chevrolet (and GMC) trucks but the underpinnings are the same with the differences in engine size and transmissions. I choose the All Star package that comes with the towing options sans the integrated trailer brake. One thing I don’t understand is why. In their infinite wisdom, Chevrolet swapped out the 3:73 rear end with a 3:18 for a tow package. It made absolutely no sense considering it is a designed package to be used as a towing vehicle. The end result is higher revs and slower speeds going up grades. Outside of that glaring issue, I have to consider that 90% of the time, I’m not towing anything so it’s only a small imposition at certain times. The truck still makes it up the grade, just not as speedily as the heavy duty tow package that has the 3:73 or 4:11 rear ends. I tow at the limits of my particular vehicle and outside of a little bucking on California highway loopty loops, it handles the load OK. I may add some rear suspension in the future. I have a lengthy road trip to Colorado coming up and will make my decision after that. So much for the driveline. Now for the interior/ride qualities; through my occupational history, I have driven all brands of American (using the term loosely) made trucks, Ford Dodge/Ram and GM, in several configurations and here is where my personal choice always trends toward Chevrolet/GMC products. It all comes down to the ride you want. Some critics think GM trucks are ponderous in their handling characteristics, slow to respond and soft in the brake pedal and lagging in the acceleration response. I find those characteristics to be quite predictable, and for a towing vehicle, that’s just the way I like it. The softer ride is easier on my aging torso and while the interior isn’t as roomy as other brands, I like to be “swaddled” to a small degree, in my vehicles. Bucket seats are too confining and bench with smaller fold down armrests are more room than I want or need, making me feel like I’m in the middle of a desert. I have found that Ford steering is “very” responsive, to the point of being jittery and a hand full to control on all but the best road conditions. Rams are a bit more predictable but still a ride better suited for the younger truck driving population. They are all good trucks in their own rite but I prefer the kinder gentler, predictable ride, even if it’s not considered sporty. I used to like loud, throaty exhaust systems like that of the Dodge Ram, but in my mature years enjoy the quite ride of the Chevy. My music can be played at tenable levels without competing for my aural attention with the exhaust system. I test drove a 2017 2500 HD gas double cab and for all the reasons I own a pickup, should have purchased it rather than a 1500, but the ride was just too stiff for me. In conclusion, I’m quite happy with my Silverado 1500 series truck as it suits all of my needs and plan to be driving it for some time to come.

Really GM Why no fixes?, 04/14/2019

2018 LT 1500 Double Cab 10k miles. I needed a truck for my personal use. And yes I should have read more reviews before buying this truck a couple of weeks ago and spent more time test driving it. It does the Chevy shake between 64-74 mph. And yes the trans shifts jerky and clunky. And yes the under body frame, rear axle and rear end housing are almost 100% rust covered, And yes the gas pedal pushes very hard. And yes according to a lot of reviews the GM dealers have no fixes for these problems which are normal they say? Really GM??? these trucks have had these known problems for 4 or 5 years now and your GM dealers jerk your customers around with no fixes! I hope your new 2019 trucks does not have these problems any longer.I will never know since you have lost a loyal GM customer!!

CHEVY OVER FORD AND DODGE HANDS DOWN

I owned three new dodge pickups in past a 1997 2002 and 2004, all did not make 70000. miles without major issues with service being done on time. all were engine and transmission issues. Decided to buy 2012 ford 4x4 with the Ecoboost engine started having issues with engine rattle then timing chain at 100000. miles would cost 5000. to fix issue with no guarantee that was actual problem. Owned chevy wt in past and truck made it 250000. with no issues. Decided to stick with chevy from this point forward. bought 2018 Silverado LT with the 5.3 V8 and so far great customer service and truck operation pulling 4700 lb camper.

Bought new, from day one transmission is jerky, fish biting at low speeds. Seems confused on what gear to be in. Truck shakes over 70 mph (thought they fixed the Chevy shake?). Starter broke at 34,000 miles...towed from driveway in the middle of summer. Everyone I know that has one of these trucks has had their starter fail...or AC condensers. I have some oil consumption too. On the plus side my paint isn’t chipping. Downside, my frame had rust on it before I even got the thing home (remedied by undercoating it). I do get great gas mileage...I’ve also had misfire codes and probably will be replacing injectors soon (it’s a “thing” with these trucks). It is quiet inside, it is smooth for a truck. I do like the power. I want to love it, but I’m starting to wonder if this was a mistake. 46,000 miles now, mostly highway. Not sure if I’m going to keep this thing. Update**** Traded it in with 52,000 miles. Misfire going up hills persisted, called the dealer, to diagnose it wasn’t covered under warranty. And fuel injectors - if that were the problem - wouldn’t be covered anyway. Really didn’t think the transmission in this truck was going to last much longer, with all the up and down, in and out of torque converter clutch, it does because of the AFM system. So my journey ended at 52,000 miles. Don’t regret it either way (buying or selling it). But yeah, if you want better reliability, but bad gas mileage, buy a Tundra. But you’ll pay more up front for the Tundra, a lot more, so in the grand scheme of things the Chevy is probably the better buy. Edit — Traded it in a 50,000 miles. It needed either injectors or a transmission. Babies since day one and extremely well maintained. Disappointing

Blown Motor at 87,000

we bought this certified used 2018 Silverado as a work truck, branded it, racks the whole deal. My guy loved it ran great until 87,000 blew the water pump and the motor. Thank god I had bought the extended 100,000 warranty on the drive train. so....they did the valves, still knocking, the lifters, still knocking, the pistons, still knocking. It's been at the dealer for 3 weeks through all this I'm an Electrical Contractor working out of a Chevy Trax mom car while my Foreman drives my awesome Tacoma so he can keep working! They finally decided to replace the motor but guess what they don't have one! So it sits on the lot. I'm loosing work because of this, I'm sorry I bought a Chevy and i still owe $25,000 on it. And it's all completely branded, tool box and racks. Pissed,

Fairly comfortable, but RAM is more so

Makes a good impression the first 15 minutes of driving - seats seem comfortable and ride is quiet and fairly smooth. But then after awhile the truck like jolts and jiggles start to become fatiguing and one notices the seats lack the deep padding of Chevy trucks of the 70's and 80's. One also notices the V8 engine is not quite as powerful feeling as one would expect of a V8 and the transmission hesitates upon abrupt acceleration. None of these issues are major, but I also have rented several RAM half ton pickups the past two years and find them noticably superior in seat comfort, ride comfort and engine/transmission performance. The RAM pentastar V6 feels as powerful as the Chevy 5.3 V8 and the RAM Hemi V8 is very noticably more powerful than the Chevy 5.3. The front seat bottoms of the RAM seem larger or longer and a bit more deeply padded for better comfort on longer drives. The ride of the RAM is less jolting and more car like due to a softer suspension and coil springs in the rear. I have also rented two half ton Ford F-150's and I found them similar in many characteristics to the Chevy except they had even less well padded seats. Lastly I have also rented two half ton Toyota Tundra's. The Tundra had the power of the RAM hemi V8, but its ride and seating comfort were inferior and about on par with the Chevy. Overall I would rank the 4 trucks as follows in comfort and engine/tranny performance (which are priorities of mine): RAM, Tundra, Chevy, Ford.

Super Vibration at 66 to 74 mph

Truck has 10,500 miles on it and been in the shop 2 time for Violent Vibration from 66 to 75. First trip to the shop they replaced two tires at8000 miles and the second time it hit the shop they claimed the front were out of balance and re balanced them at 10,000 miles. It goes in Friday for 2 more new tires and they did a road test and when they did he explained to me they pulled to the side of the road once the tires were hot and dropped the pressure to the 35 specked on the inside of the door. So they did the test with it at hot 35 and claimed it was a good test and that they need to replace 2 more tires. They all must think owners are stupid. Cold tire pressure of 35 will only be 35 if you don't drive it. Bottom line 10,500 mile with 4 new tires and the problem will be temporary fixed until it gets driven. Bad tires are bad tires . You don't fix bad tires by putting more bad tires on it. Very dissatisfied with Chevy after driving Chevy for most of my life I will probably buy a Dodge next time.

Drop-down descriptions not quite right: this is a Z71 LT Double Cab, 5.3L 4WD with 6.5' bed. This has been a very comfortable vehicle for road trips but I should have listened to the man that said to get a Crew Cab rather than the double cab because you're going to want it later. I do now and will be replacing this one soon but have had just a few very minor problems. Right from the start the gas filler neck grabs the nozzle on the hose, especially but not limited to Shell stations. My freeway speed is usually under 70 mph resulting in great fuel mileage between 24 and 28 mpg (seems to depend on fuel quality and, of course, topology). The 5.3L is a very strong, smooth and quiet engine. The power driver seat is comfortable for about 2.5 hours at a time but certainly not as comfortable as my Mustang GT. Very capable off-road in every condition I've encountered in New Mexico. Runs fine on 86 octane at 5300' and above as do most of our vehicles (but not the Pony). My 100 lb wife loves this truck and drives it to the gym and shopping as often as I'll let her.

When comes to interior space,GM could learn few things from dodge ram....they utilize every square inch of it.The radio and the rest of the electronics are a bit complicated and need to be learned to get full use.The driver seat it's a bit too low....I wish they install a level to bring it up for better view of the road (I'm 5.6feet)

I traded in my 2012 Ford F150 due to all the rebate specials. I'm pleased with the Truck and drives great!!! Only complaint I have is the backup camera is not accurate. It will guide you but its way off as far as distance to anything behind you and has no backup warning sound that your close to anything.

In November 2017 I bought in new Chevy Silverado . It was a 5.3 ZR71 Fully loaded . With only 103 miles on it. Now it has 38000 miles on it. It is turning out to be a problem child now. When you go to put the window up or down it gets halfway it is starts going up-and-down by itself without touching any buttons or anything. In all song when you go to put it from automatic to for high 4 low it gets confused on what to do. A friend of mine got out the Vehicle when I shifted it the front tires wanna go backwards the Back tires wanna go forward. At the same time. It just seems like this is pretty Strange this happen right After 36000 miles. What's next who knows I will be right another review on what goes on next.

Our Silverado almost killed our dog.

In June we bought a brand new 2018 Chevy Silverado dubble cab Pickup. (Beautiful Truck) August 3rd we loaded up our beautiful dog Rebel and left on a trip that would take us across country from Missouri to Pa. Before we got out of the state of Missouri the air conditioning in the truck quit. It would blow air but would not cool, was just like running the vents. It was too late in the evening to get it fixed. So we kept driving all night. By the time we got near our destination it was 95 degrees. The heat was so bad in the truck that we almost lost our beautiful baby. We had to pull off and get him out of that truck. When we opened the door he was so hot and destorted, he fell out of the truck on to his head and back. He would not get up Dale had to carry him over by a pond, under some trees in the damp grass and mud. We were afraid we had lost him. We were there for around 2 hours till the temperture cooled so that we could make the rest of our trip. Once we got to where we were going, we were able to call a dealership and get it looked at. It took three days without our truck, away from home to get a part and get it fixed. The problem that almost took our babies life was, the air conditionar hose was not put on right at the plant. It let all the freon leak out, so it could not cool. All this could have been prevented if someone would have just payed attention to the job they were suposed to be doing. To make matters worse. When we droped it off at your certified dealership in Reading Pa. They said they needed the registration for the warranty. He told us he would put it back in the glove box when he was done. When we were getting ready to leave. I opened the passengers side door. And the registration fell out on the ground. They just put it in the door. I am just glad that I saw it fall out. I have attached a picture of our baby. I wanted you to see the lives that depend on your employee's doing their job right. You may say oh its just a dog. But he is our child and depends on us keeping him safe. We depend on you to make sure that our new vehicle is safe for all of us. Right down to keeping us cool on long trips. Called and talk to GM about the problem. And the answer we got back was they wanted to send us a $100.00 service voucher on a truck that is under full warranty and we already bought the extended warranty when we bought it. If we were to take that truck in to get something fixed. The cost would have started at at least $1500.00. Heck it would have cost us more than $100.00 To pull off and get a hotel and eat. Maybe to GM as a corporation a dog doesn't mean anything but to us our baby is everything. Needless to say we are not such satisfied customers.

I bought this truck only because I was told by the specs that this truck could tow 9500lb. I tow only 3500lb and it's pretty horrible. No power would not recommend buying this truck. It has engine brake assistance is horrible during traffic. Bottom line truck broke after 3 months of towing a 3500 lb. Piston 3 went. I suspect the problem is with the engine going back and forth to v4 to v8. Towing botton is on. I got pulled in by the nice interior. Getting it fix with warranty but what a headache. Bought a new truck to avoid break downs and Im still dealing with brake downs. My old ford f250 finally broke at 490,000 miles with a 5.4. Should have bought a ford f250. Going to get rid of this truck as soon as I get it back.

All was well for the first 12000 miles, then it started to vibrate. they replaced the tires, and then found it was in the driveshaft. Now they say the tires are poor, and the tire maker says its the factory rims. the nav system screen cable has been replaced, and may need it again. some of the brackets on the front fender need to be painted, and the rear window rattles when its open. otherwise its been great. I now have 45,000 miles on this truck and love it. don't ever buy the bridgestone tires that are on it, they are junk. and will give you nothing but problems.

I've been leasing this truck for almost 3 years now. I had the intention of buying after, which I'm still on the fence about. Over the past 3 years I have had zero issues with the truck. It has run great, it isn't the smoothest drive but it's not as pronounced as some will say it is. Only recently when I hit 40k miles did the starter start having a pronounced intermittent issue. The battery is good, but when I go to start it you will hear the flywheel spin and try to engage, but it just clicks and won't start. Lately, it's been like spinning a roulette wheel. Some days it will start right up with no issues, and then later the same day I'll be stranded for 20-30 minutes trying to get it to crank. I plan on calling the dealer about it this week, but I am pretty disappointed that the starter seems to be failing after only 40k miles and of course right at the end of my lease.

Had to replace the starter within the first 40k mi

I will start out by saying that I've really enjoyed my 2018 Silverado (LT, 8 cylinder trim, not LTZ). But that is not without some mishaps and disappointments. First off, within my first 40k miles with the vehicle, the starter went out and needed to be replaced (intermittent no-crank issue). I'm very surprised that a truck that is only 3 years old needed a new starter, it could be chocked up to bad luck, but, given what I've seen online, it's a common issue with GM trucks. The gas mileage is nothing to write home about, it is certainly decent for a V8 and having it switch to 4-cylinders while cruising certainly helped me get an average of 21-22mpg combined mileage in city and highway; with that dropped to around 16.5mpg during the cold winter months. It's not the smoothest ride, you'll certainly feel every bump in the road and I'm overall unimpressed with the build quality of the interior. The LT, while it has the touch-screen full-color infotainment system, also only nets you cloth seats and a somewhat cheap-looking plastic interior. I have the double-cab, which is not ideal if you're planning on traveling with adult passengers in the back, but it works if you have small kids (albeit getting car seats in there can be a major pain). The tailgate-mounted backing camera and the heated seats are great, and I thought the stock sound system was pretty decent (although not great). You get what you pay for. If you're all for the great Vortec engine and looking at this year model, I would go for a pricier trim style just for the added features and build quality. Not a bad truck, but pretty middle-of-the-road compared to the competition.

This 2018 LTZ model with 5.3ltr V8 was exceptional, did what I needed without any issues and delivered 22mpg due to its seamless dynamic fuel management system. After 2.5 years I traded it into Chevy dealer for a Silverado HD to tow a new and heavy RV, and was given what I paid for it on trade in - so I drove for over two years for free. Thank you Chevy!

Purchased this used 2018 Silverado, LT, Z71, All star edition with 5.3L V8 (The V8 option wasn't available in the Edmunds selections). Bose stereo upgrade and mostly blacked out. It's a great looked, comfortable, and nice riding truck. I've read through many reviews and this truck stands out. Transmission shifts smoothly, engine is quiet and powerful, ride is great both in town and on the highway. I have an 82 mile commute and average over 20 MPG on my daily drives (combined driving). I will update this review in subsequent years. FYI, my truck has 3/26/2023 UPDATE: Purchased this 2018 Double Cab truck with the 5.3L V8 in March of 2023. (Edmunds doesn't have the Z71 LT w/ 5.3L V8 as an option). It has options for buckets seats and the Bose stereo upgrade. It had 54k miles on it. In 13 months I've put 35,000 miles on the truck commuting to work. The only maintenance required was replacing the front left wheel bearing at about 80k miles. During summer months I average 21-22 mpg during my commutes (85 miles each way, 55 miles freeway at 65 mph, then 30 miles of state highways, with 3 intown areas, stop lights etc.). The truck is smooth and comfortable, the engine has plenty of power, and the transmission shifts smoothly. Just last week I had the differentials, transfer cases and transmission serviced including all new fluids. I hope to keep this truck for many years after I retire this week.

I'm comparing this to the 2000 GMC 1500 Sierra with a 5.3L I used to have. That said I would take the 2000 GMC over this 2018 Silverado LT 5.3L any day. I was actually looking for a real truck 60s- mid 80s but I needed something quick and this 2018 Silverado is all I could find. I hate the cylinder deactivation constantly switching between 4 cylinders and 8. I bought a programmer to stop it from doing that. The ride is a joke, it's bouncy as hell, New Bilstien shocks to fix that, The interior looks and feels cheap, The exterior door handles feel extremely cheap, If you live in area that gets cold (I live in Alaska) forget about the wipers working. They constantly freeze in place in cooler temps. Even about pulling over to break them free and remove ice, withing a mile or so they will be frozen in place again. No clue how GM has not been sued over this MAJOR safety issue. Steering is not that responsive. The 2000 GMC while having 285 HP compared to this 2018 having 355 HP, the GMC felt like it had way more power than this 2018 and handled at least twice as good as this 2018. The GMC had no back up camera and the one on this 2018 is so bad it makes me wish it didn't have one because of how poor the picture is. But if you want to spend thousands more you might get the 2018 to handle pretty good, You might be able to spend a few hundred dollars more and slightly improve the back up camera picture quality to say bad rating. Buy a battery jump pack to keep with you as the OnStar system will have your battery dead every couple of days unless you start and drive around a little "Every day". I'm a Chevy fan (Older Chevys) Love my 1984 Blazer, Loved my 2000 GMC (Somebody wrecked it) I cant honestly think of anything really good to say about this 2018 Silverado. As soon as I can find another decent older Chevy this 2018 will be getting sold. Never again will I waste money on a new/er GM vehicle.
