What Is It?
2016 Smart Fortwo
What's New About This Model?
The redesigned 2016 Smart Fortwo manages the neat trick of being quirky yet serious. Bigger dimensions, a sturdier-looking stance and more grown-up "face" make the Fortwo look a bit more like a traditional hatchback. New colors and more equipment round out the changes.
When Does It Go on Sale?
The 2016 Fortwo will arrive at dealerships in the second half of 2015.
How Much Does It Cost?
No official pricing has been released yet, but we expect the Fortwo coupe will be priced similar to the 2015 model, which starts at $14,020, including a $750 destination charge.
How Many Body Styles and Trim Levels Are There?
The 2016 Smart Fortwo coupe will be available in three different trim levels. They are the base Pure coupe, the uplevel Passion coupe — which adds a radio, power accessories and more standard equipment — and the Passion Cabriolet with a soft top.
Only the gasoline-engine 2016 models will feature the all-new platform.
A 2016 Smart Fortwo electric model will be sold, but it will be based on the current-generation or 2015 model-year car, not the all-new platform.
What Kinds of Engines and Transmissions Does It Have?
- 0.9-liter, turbocharged inline-three-cylinder, estimated 90 horsepower, 100 pound-feet of torque (the largest engine is the only one coming to the U.S./U.S. specs are not finalized)
- Five-speed manual transmission standard; six-speed dual-clutch transmission optional
New colors will help to keep the Smart Fortwo fresh. They include Moon White, a matte shade, metallic Lava Orange and metallic Hazel Brown. There are around 40 combination options for those who like the two-tone look.
What Kind of Standard and Optional Safety Equipment Is Offered?
Mercedes-Benz said it has not finalized safety features on the U.S. version of the 2016 Fortwo.
What Models Will It Compete Against?
Chevrolet Spark: Another small car with lots of character and cool color choices, including Grape Ice, Lemonade and Salsa. Grown-ups will appreciate the room for four adults, affordable price tag and excellent fuel economy. There's even a Spark EV.
Fiat 500: Chic Italian style and a retro feel draw buyers to this perky little car. The Fiat 500 is available in coupe, convertible and stretched 500L versions. Buyers in California and Oregon can get an electric Fiat 500.
Scion iQ: While not as offbeat as some of its competitors, this small car boasts a lively personality, great fuel economy and an attractive price tag.
Should You Wait for It?
There's no need to wait for the Fortwo Electric, since it will be a carryover model. But if you want to be a trendsetter with bragging rights to the somewhat supersized Fortwo, it's best to wait.
