2014 Paris Auto Show: 2015 Land Rover Discovery Sport (FAQ)

2014 Paris Auto Show

What Is It?
2015 Land Rover Discovery Sport

What's New About This Model?
The 2015 Land Rover Discovery Sport is an all-new compact luxury SUV addition to the Land Rover lineup. Positioned below the current LR4, the Discovery Sport is similar in size to the Audi Q5 and BMW X3.

The Discovery Sport shares its engine, transmission and front structure with the more expensive Range Rover Evoque, while the rear half of the Discovery Sport is a unique design that allows for an optional third-row seat.

Like the Range Rover Evoque, the Discovery Sport is powered by a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine that sends it power to all four wheels through a nine-speed automatic transmission.

When Does It Go on Sale?
Sales of the 2015 Land Rover Discovery Sport are scheduled to start in March of 2015.

How Much Does It Cost?
The base price of the 2015 Land Rover Discovery Sport will be $38,920 for a five-passenger model without the third-row seat. Pricing for the entire lineup and the various options has not been released yet.

How Many Body Styles and Trim Levels Are There?
There will only be one body style for the Discovery Sport, but it will be offered with either two- or three rows of seating. Four different trim levels will be available: S, SE, HSE and HSE Luxury.

What Kind of Engines and Transmissions Does It Have?

  • 2.0-liter, inline four-cylinder, 237 horsepower, 250 lb-ft of torque
  • Nine-speed automatic transmission standard
  • Standard all-wheel drive

What Unique Features Does It Offer?
Although it may seem common, the seven-passenger seating capability is rare for a luxury SUV of its size. None of the similarly sized competitors like the Audi Q5, BMW X3 or Mercedes-Benz GLK offer third-row seating. To emphasize the usability of the third row, both passengers in the far backseat get USB charge ports and individual, face-level air-conditioning vents.

With standard all-wheel drive and Land Rover's adjustable Terrain Response System, the Discovery Sport is extremely capable off-road. To drive home the point, it includes a Wade Sense system that can measure the depth of the water during a crossing and relay it to the main screen in the cabin. For the record, the Discovery Sport is capable of driving through up to 2 feet of water thanks to an air intake mounted high in the wheel arch.

What Models Will It Compete Against?
Audi Q5: This popular SUV combines a refined ride with a sharp interior. The fact that it also offers a high-performance supercharged V6 version and a fuel-sipping diesel model certainly helps its popularity.

BMW X3: A fun-to-drive compact SUV, the X3 is easily one of the most athletic vehicles in this class. It's not known for its off-road prowess, however, and interior passenger space is a little tight.

Mercedes-Benz GLK: Like its Audi and BMW competitors, the GLK is designed mainly for on-road use. For that it's very comfortable and definitely looks the part of a luxury SUV.

Should You Wait for It?
With its combination of a manageable size and seven-passenger seating, the Discovery Sport offers a unique package that few other SUVs in the class can match. Throw in its considerable off-road abilities and this new Land Rover model is certainly worth the wait for luxury SUV shoppers who are looking for that perfect combination of practicality and performance.
