2015 New York Auto Show: 2016 Smart Fortwo (FAQ)

2015 New York Auto Show

What Is It?
2016 Smart Fortwo

What's New About This Model?
The redesigned 2016 Smart Fortwo manages the neat trick of being quirky, yet serious. Bigger dimensions, a sturdier-looking stance and a more grown-up "face" make the Fortwo look a bit more like a traditional hatchback. New colors and more equipment round out the changes.

When Does It Go on Sale?
The 2016 Fortwo will arrive at U.S. Smart dealerships in September.

How Much Does It Cost?
Pricing will be announced closer to the launch date, but we expect the Fortwo coupe will be priced similar to the 2015 model, which starts at $14,020, including a $750 destination charge.

How Many Body Styles and Trim Levels Are There?
The 2016 Smart Fortwo coupe will be available in four models. They are the entry-level pure version, along with new uplevel versions called passion, prime and proxy.

The base pure model can be ordered with LED daytime running lights, central locking with radio remote control, cruise control, a multifunction steering wheel, smart radio with CD player, Bluetooth, power steering and power windows.

Passion, prime and proxy models provide cabin upgrades. Their features include a leather multifunction steering wheel, power and heated mirrors, a height-adjustable driver seat and armrest and a retractable cargo cover.

To tie in with the market launch of the 2016 Fortwo, an Edition #1 package will be available. It features a Lava Orange and White exterior.

Only the gasoline-engine 2016 models will feature the all-new platform.

A 2016 Smart Fortwo electric model will be sold, but it will be based on the current-generation or 2015 model-year car, not the all-new Smart.

What Kinds of Engines and Transmissions Does It Have?

  • 0.9-liter, turbocharged inline three-cylinder: 89 horsepower, 100 pound-feet of torque
  • Five-speed manual transmission standard; six-speed dual-clutch transmission optional

How Does It Keep the Funky Factor?
New colors will help keep the Smart Fortwo fresh. They include Moon White, a matte shade, metallic Lava Orange and metallic Hazel Brown. There are around 40 combination options for those who like the two-tone look.

What Kind of Standard and Optional Safety Equipment Is Offered?
Standard safety equipment on the 2016 Fortwo includes antilock brakes, traction control and stability control. Crosswind Assist is standard, too. It applies the brakes to counteract severe side winds. This feature is active from 50 mph when driving straight ahead and in gentle bends.

A forward collision warning system is optional.

What Models Will It Compete Against?
Chevrolet Spark: Another small car with lots of character and cool color choices, including Salsa, Lemonade and Grape Ice. Grown-ups will appreciate the room for four adults, affordable price tag and excellent fuel economy. There's even a Spark EV.

Fiat 500: Chic Italian style and a retro feel draw buyers to this perky little car. The Fiat 500 is available in coupe, convertible and stretched 500L versions. Buyers in California and Oregon can get an electric Fiat 500.

Mitsubishi Mirage: The Mirage is affordable and fuel-efficient, with room for four adults. It's a solid choice for shoppers looking for practical transportation.

Should You Wait for It?
There's no need to wait for the Fortwo Electric, since it will be a carryover model. But if you want to be a trend-setter with bragging rights to the somewhat supersized Fortwo, it's best to wait.
