2014 Los Angeles Auto Show: 2015 Porsche Cayenne GTS (FAQ)

2014 Los Angeles Auto Show

What Is It?
2015 Porsche Cayenne GTS

What's New About This Model?
As one of six new Cayenne models, the GTS slots in the lineup between the S and Turbo trims. Though it utilizes the same twin-turbocharged 3.6-liter V6 as the S model, the GTS engine is tuned to produce an additional 20 horsepower, bringing the total to 440. The exterior receives unique black and body-color trim and 20-inch wheels. Inside is an opulent mix of Alcantara, leather, aluminum and carbon fiber.

When Does It Go on Sale?
Porsche said it expects to have the 2015 Cayenne GTS at dealers in February 2015.

How Much Does It Cost?
Starting at $96,495 the Cayenne GTS represents a big step up over the Base ($59,295) and S ($75,095) trims.

How Many Body Styles and Trim Levels Are There?
With the announcement of the Base and GTS trims at the L.A. show, there are now six models of the 2015 Porsche Cayenne available: Base, S, GTS, Turbo, Plug-In Hybrid and Diesel.

What Kind of Engines and Transmissions Does It Have?

  • 3.6-liter V6 — 300 hp, 295 pound-feet of torque (Base)
  • 3.6-liter twin-turbocharged V6 — 320 hp, 406 lb-ft of torque (S)
  • 3.6-liter twin-turbocharged V6 — 340 hp, 443 lb-ft of torque (GTS)
  • 4.8-liter twin-turbocharged V6 — 520 hp, 553 lb-ft of torque (Turbo)
  • 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6 — 240 hp, 406 lb-ft of torque (Diesel)
  • 3.0-liter supercharged V6/95-hp electric motor — 416 combined hp, 435 lb-ft of torque (Hybrid)

All trims utilize an eight-speed automatic transmission.

What Unique Features Does It Offer?
The Cayenne is the only luxury SUV available as a plug-in hybrid. And with five distinct powertrains spread over six models, the Cayenne has something for everyone.

What Models Will It Compete Against?
BMW X5/X5 M: Similar size to the Cayenne and, despite a less flashy design, still very much a luxury SUV. Also available in diesel and performance (X5 M) variants.

Land Rover Range Rover Sport: As the only luxury/performance SUV to have true off-road chops, the Range Rover Sport finds a niche all its own. Two engines are available: a supercharged V6 and a supercharged V8.

Mercedes-Benz M-Class/ML63: Also very similar to the Cayenne in size, purpose and presentation, the M-Class is available with four different engines, including a 518-hp V8 in the ML63 and a four-cylinder diesel. No hybrid is available.

Should You Wait for It?
If you're looking for a performance SUV that's a very capable handler and can be genuinely pleasing to drive, the Cayenne might just be your machine. Despite being both quick and good-looking, the GTS trim truly differentiates itself only to Porsche aficionados. Some competitors give you more power for less money, so if you're honestly in it for the performance they will likely serve you as well.
