What Is It?
2016 Mercedes-AMG GLE63 S Coupe 4Matic
What's New About This Model?
Don't let the name fool you: The 2016 Mercedes-AMG GLE63 S Coupe 4Matic is an all-new four-door slope-back SUV packing a 577-horsepower 5.5-liter V8. The standard GLE is the upcoming replacement for the current ML-Class midsize SUV.
When Does It Go on Sale?
Mercedes expects the GLE63 to go on sale in late summer of this year.
How Much Does It Cost?
Official pricing wasn't announced, but expect it to start north of $90,000.
How Many Body Styles and Trim Levels Are There?
The Mercedes-AMG GLE63 is the top dog of the GLE family and available only as a four-door, all-wheel-drive SUV. For those who don't need all 577 horses, the GLE450 AMG will also be available with a 362-hp twin-turbocharged V6.
What Kind of Engines and Transmissions Does It Have?
- 5.5-liter V8: 577 hp, 561 pound-feet of torque
- Nine-speed automatic transmission
- 0-60: 4.2 seconds
What Unique Features Does It Offer?
While not exactly unique, the GLE63 follows BMW down the road of large SUVs with low sloping rear roof lines that offer tons of power. It's a combination that doesn't make a ton of actual sense — especially when compared with the bigger, more useful X5 M and Mercedes GL63 AMG — but the styling is far cooler than the normal mommy-mobile SUVs. The GLE63 offers a "Slippery" transmission mode, which may be a first.
What Kind of Standard and Optional Safety Equipment Is Offered?
The GLE63 AMG features advanced safety features like collision mitigation braking, attention assist, a surround-view camera and optional adaptive cruise control in addition to airbags, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist, cross-traffic alert and a 360-degree camera.
What Models Will It Compete Against?
BMW X6 M: While the GLE63 AMG could potentially compete with the Mercedes GL63 and the BMW X5, the GLE63 AMG would not exist without the BMW X6 M. The BMW has a 555-hp 4.4-liter V8, hits 60 in 4.3 seconds and sits on huge wheels and tires. The X6 M's starting price of right around $90,000 is enough evidence to confirm our suspicions that the GLE63 will start right around $90,000.
Porsche Macan: The Porsche Macan may not have the outlandish styling of the Mercedes or the X6 M, but it still cuts a sharp profile. It also has less power than the other two here (it only makes 400 hp in Turbo trim) but with less weight, it's still a great performer on the road.
Should You Wait for It?
If you've been itching for a powerful, less useful, nearly full-size SUV and haven't already bought an X6 M, this will surely have you salivating. It's got the right looks, the right power and should make all the right noises. You've held out this long. Test-drive this one before jumping into an X6 M.
