2015 Detroit Auto Show: 2015 Alfa Romeo 4C Spider (FAQ)

2015 Detroit Auto Show

What Is It?
2015 Alfa Romeo 4C Spider

What's New About This Model?
The two-seat 2015 Alfa Romeo 4C Spider is the convertible companion model to the 2015 Alfa Romeo 4C coupe that launched in late 2014.

When Does It Go on Sale?
The 2015 Alfa Romeo 4C Spider arrives at Alfa Romeo dealerships in the summer.

How Much Does It Cost?
Pricing has not been announced, but car shoppers can expect a price tag of around $60,000.

How Does It Measure Up to the 2015 Alfa Romeo 4C Coupe?
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles worked to keep the weight down on the Alfa Romeo 4C Spider, which features a lightweight carbon-fiber windshield frame that provides the attachment points for the removable and stowable cloth roof. An optional exposed carbon-fiber hardtop will be available later in the model year.

In terms of performance, the two cars are similar, according to FCA U.S. specifications. Both have a 0-60-mph acceleration time in the mid-4 second range and a 160-mph top speed.

The 4C Coupe has a curb weight of 2,465 pounds; the 4C Spider has a curb weight of 2,487 pounds.

What Kinds of Engines and Transmissions Does It Have?

  • Turbocharged 1.7-liter four-cylinder engine: 237-horsepower, 258 pound-feet of torque
  • Alfa TCT twin-clutch six-speed automated manual transmission
  • Estimated EPA fuel economy: 24 mpg city/34 mpg highway

What Unique Features Does It Offer?
An all-new optional Akrapovic dual-mode exhaust system features dual, center-mounted tips with carbon-fiber surround, and signature sound will be available later in the model year. It is one of three available exhaust systems on the convertible.

Also new to the Alfa Romeo 4C lineup is the addition of an Alpine premium radio with a USB port and iPod interface.

The Alfa Romeo Spider is the first model in the lineup to get a new Tobacco leather interior with black accents. This will also be available later in the model year.

Four new wheel designs are also offered on the convertible model.

An optional Track package on the 4C Spider includes high-performance shock absorbers, performance flat-bottom steering wheel and carbon-fiber side mirrors.

What Kinds of Standard and Optional Safety Equipment Are Offered?
The 4C Spider's standard safety equipment includes electronic stability control, antilock brakes, traction control and a driver knee airbag.

What Models Will It Compete Against?
2015 BMW Z4: The rakish Z4 offers sleek styling, a high-class interior and more than enough performance to make it desirable.

2015 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray: This domestic favorite shakes up the competition with its ridiculously fast Z06 model. The 'Vette has undeniable credentials as the world's best performance-car bargain.

2015 Porsche Boxster: The Boxster is stylish, luxurious and a surprisingly good bargain. While it doesn't have the lineage of the Porsche 911, it's a compelling choice for any convertible shopper.

Should You Wait for It?
The 2015 Alfa Romeo 4C Spider enters the drop-top fray with lots of Italian glamour and promises of la dolce vita. If you're one of those shoppers who's waited decades for Alfa Romeo's return to the States, a wait of a few months should be no problem. But there are plenty of tantalizing options in the meantime.
