TORRANCE, California — The new Lexus F model is a coupe, according to the latest teaser released by Toyota ahead of the car's debut at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show.

The official name of the two-door F model will be released in early January, the automaker said.

"Lexus will unleash its upcoming F model as a coupe, conceived with grit, an entirely new expression of design and uncompromising performance," Lexus said in a statement on Thursday.

Toyota is offering no more details about the car, but it is widely speculated that this may be the performance-oriented version of the 2015 Lexus RC coupe.

The "F" designation stands for "Fuji Speedway," a location outside of Tokyo where Lexus tests its performance products.

The F badging first showed up in 2008 on the Lexus IS F sedan, which targets the BMW M3. The 2014 Lexus IS F starts at $64,510. The 2014 Lexus RX 350 F Sport starts at $48,535.

F Sport models get additions including Brembo brakes and larger wheels and tires.

Edmunds says: Another piece of the Lexus F puzzle falls into place.
