2014 Detroit Auto Show: 2014 BMW 2 Series (FAQ)

2014 Detroit Auto Show

What Is It?
2014 BMW 2 Series

What's New About This Model?
The 2014 BMW 2 Series is an all-new model in the brand's lineup. It replaces the current 1 Series coupe. The 2 Series is split between two models: the base 228i and the high-performance M235i. The latter is what BMW refers to as an "M Performance" car. It bridges the gap between the company's standard models and its ultra-high-performance "M" vehicles like the M3 and M5.

When Does It Go on Sale?
BMW says the 2 Series will launch in March of this year.

How Much Does It Cost?
The base 228i model starts at $33,025, while the M235i model will start at $44,025.

How Many Body Styles and Trim Levels Are There?
The 2014 BMW 2 Series comes as a two-door coupe only. Two levels of trim are available: the base 228i and the M235i.

What Kind of Engines and Transmissions Does It Have?
- 228i: 2.0-liter, turbocharged inline four-cylinder: 240 horsepower, 258 lb-ft of torque
- M235i: 3.0-liter turbocharged inline six-cylinder: 322 hp, 332 lb-ft of torque
- Eight-speed automatic transmission standard; six-speed manual transmission optional

How Does It Compare in Size to the 1 Series It Replaces?
The 2 Series is bigger than the 1 Series in almost every dimension. Length and wheelbase are up 2.8 inches while the width is up 1.3 inches. The 2 Series looks significantly wider as well, as the front wheels are 1.6 inches farther apart and its rear wheels are 1.7 inches farther apart. Interior space is up, too, as the 2 Series has nearly an inch of extra front headroom and nearly an inch of extra rear-seat legroom.

What Models Will It Compete Against?
Audi A3: Like the CLA, the new Audi A3 is a four-door sedan with a coupelike profile and a price that starts right around $30,000.

Mercedes-Benz CLA250: Although the CLA is a four-door sedan, its sleek roof line and overall size make it a close competitor to the 2 Series. The CLA is also Mercedes' least expensive model, with a starting price of around $30,000.

Nissan 370Z : A true coupe like the 2 Series, the 370Z packs V6 power into a two-seat sports car for hard-core enthusiasts.

Should You Wait for It?
The 2014 BMW 2 Series is a solid upgrade over the current 1 Series in terms of size and features. It's not cheap, though, and both the Mercedes-Benz CLA and Audi A3 offer the convenience of four doors for the same price.
