Re: Tires and Lousy Toyota Dealers [tony17]
Written by: alan_s on Jul 25, 2005 7:22:17 PM
Tony17: Bridgestone suggested the LS-V in size 225-55-17. There are very few choices in 215's. Most tire manufacturers do not offer this size. Don't know why Toyota spec'd a tire with such limited choices. The LS-V 225's are designed to fit on the existing 7" rim and the overall diameter, section width and revs per mile are very close to the 215-55-17 EL400, but the actual tread width is greater, largely ... Hard choices!
Written by: kcmover on Jun 25, 2005 12:03:44 PM
Been driving Cadillacs since 1997 and have had one seville in 97, and two DTS's in 2000 and 2002. The DTS's have been fully loaded and nice cars but I can't seem to want to pay the high price Caddy wants for the new DTS when they don't want to give me much trade for my 2002 loaded car. I test drove an Avalon earlier in the week and liked the ... Read More

My BlueStreak has arrived!
Written by: gbinplano on May 30, 2005 1:46:29 PM
The Indigo Ink and graphite Limited we ordered on March 14th greeted us at Toyota of Richardson on our return from a fortnight's holiday in Europe last Friday. It had everything I ordered - NAV, VSC, Laser and the ExtraMile Package, which consists of Toyota's Parking Pilot (a four sensor back-up assistance), remote start, Avalon mats, a silver and platinum pinstripe, various other minor niceties, and 6 year, 100K mile tire ... ryandse, welcome to Avalon Country. You may be a demographic outrider for now, but this is changing fast; you may be mainstream before you know it! You said in post #5130: "Actually, one thing that concerns me (a little) is that the Toyota Avalon Limited has perhaps the most sophisticated collection of electronics than their other vehicles, thus increasing the chances of electrical failure. ... So, yes, I have faith in ... Read More

From an atypical potential future Avalon-owner
Written by: ryandse on May 1, 2005 1:38:19 AM
First off, I would like to start with a confession -- actually make that two confessions. The first one being that I have been keeping my eye on this forum for at least a month, as I have been doing some extensive research on various sedans on the market. Secondly, being someone who has managed to narrow my choices almost exclusively down to the new 2005 release of Toyota's flagship sedan: ... Read More

First model year
Written by: blackdog4 on Mar 28, 2005 4:09:56 PM
I agree that if I needed a new car soon and wanted the new Avalon, Toyota is probably one of the best auto makers to gamble on. As a 1997 Avalon owner, I feel I can comment on another Toyota new design, my Toyota Sequoia (based on the Tundra platform, and engine). It came out in 2001 and I waited a year to buy the 2002 in November of 2001. The first ... Read More

"Conversely, your potential trade-in is worth more if you don't wait for the newer models. There's no one right answer." I totally agree. For me, the 2005 Avalon was released exactly when I had decided I would trade my 1997 Camry rather than pay for expensive suspension repairs. I considered many new-car alternatives (Camry, Solara, Prius, Acura TL-RL, Lexus IS-ES, BMW, Subaru; even test-drove the MB Smart) but was convinced by ... Read More

Re: Break-In Period [burl]
Written by: mackabee on Mar 23, 2005 6:44:27 AM
Sorry to disagree with you on this. Toyota has stated in their owner's manuals for quite sometime and as far back as model year 1997 that oil changes are to be performed at 5000 mile or 7500 mile intervals. If you do this and follow the manufacturer's recommendation and later have a problem with the engine than it's the manufacturer's fault and not yours. The sludge "problem" you are referring to ... Interior quality
Written by: mackabee on Feb 7, 2005 11:28:05 AM
We just got our second Avalon in, a Touring model in Titanium silver. The Limited was sold just as the truck pulled in with the Touring. After reading these last posts about interior quality I had to go and check it out myself. What I see here is the same thing that happened in 1997 with the Camry. The 92-96 Camry was a Lexus in disguise and the next generation Camry ... Read More

1997 Avalon Rack and Pinion Problem
Written by: bigblueky on May 2, 2002 12:03:40 PM
I have a 97 Avalon and had to replace the rack and pinion at 92,000 miles. The problem was a seal that went bad on the drivers side. Toyota doesn't just sell the seal so you have to buy a whole new rack. Other than the problem with the rack I absolutely love the car and plan on keeping it for many years to come. The car will turn 100K this ... Read More

Written by: blackdog4 on Apr 30, 2002 4:49:25 PM
My 1997 Avalon had to have the steering gear rack replaced as it was leaking oil. The part alone was quoted at $800. All of my service, including oil changes had been with Toyota of Weymouth (Massachusetts). I also bought a 2001 Sequoia from them six months ago. I told the service manager how disappointed I was in this low milage problem and asked him if he would contact Toyota on ... Read More

power steering rack
Written by: blackdog4 on Apr 24, 2002 3:36:34 PM
I own a 1997 Avalon that has just turned 5 years old and has 52,000 gently driven miles on it. Noise has started with turns and a small oil leak was noted. The dealer, Toyota of Weymoth (Massachusetts), tells me there is a crack in the power steering rack. The replacement part is $800 and the labor is about $400 = $1200. I have never experienced such a major problem in ... Read More

Otis123 Thumps and Rattles
Written by: footie on Apr 17, 2002 5:37:29 PM
Otis123, Your 92 Camry was made in Japan. I would venture that the 92 - 96 Camry is probably the best overall quality Toyota branded car line ever sold in the U.S. A 95 or 96 Camry with under 100K is a great buy for anyone that can find one. In 1997 Toyota shifted to Camry production in Georgetown (even though there are apparently some 97 Japan-sourced Camry's around). From my ... Read More

Purchasing a used car - Toyota Avalon

Can someone advice me as to which years had serious problems in Avalon , so that I should not look for these years, also what are the best deals for 1998/1997 that anyone got. I am planning to buy used avalon , instead of camry , is this a good decision, and how do you compare these cars. ... Read More

Cliffy the Avalon sage
Written by: ruztyroo on Apr 6, 2001 10:48:24 AM
Cliffy et al: I just purchased a 1997 Avalon XLS from a dealer who was listed on cars.com. I'm by no means of a mechanical bent, but the car SEEMS fine (has a few exterior scratches; had to refill power steering, which was REALLY low). I have two questions: 1) The seller didn't have the keyless remote transmitters--just one key (and a copy at that). By looking up the VIN, I ... Read More

Avalon vs V.S70 ?
Written by: rzep22 on Jan 11, 2001 9:31:53 PM
I also test drove the S70 (1998) before buying 2001 L. I loved the breaks and seat comfort in Volvo but the interior size and quality issues shifted me more towards Avalon. Before making my decision (and before test driving), I followed discussion boards here and S70 for ~3 weeks. have read (from) many more dissatisfied people with S70 than Avalon. Furthermore, since both dealerships are close to my house, I ... Read More

Brakes- 1997 Avolon
Written by: keeney1 on Aug 13, 2000 1:19:18 PM
I presently have 105,000 miles on the car. At about 95,000 the brakes started to "shatter". Going down long hill and applying the brakes, I would get a lot of vibration. Went to some local brake folks and they said this is "typical of Toyota and Honda cars". "The discs heat up and become distorted, and then you get the vibration type feeling." Now this happens often enough to have us ... Read More
