SHANGHAI, China — Detroit Electric and China's Geely Automobile Group announced a strategic partnership on Thursday to co-develop electric cars and electric-drive systems for the Chinese market. The new deal was announced at the 2013 Shanghai Auto Show.

Sales of the Geely Emgrand EC7-EV, co-branded with Detroit Electric, will begin in China in the first quarter of 2014. The vehicle will be sold primarily to business users and public-sector groups, the companies said in a joint statement. The EC7-EV will offer two options to buyers: a medium-driving range of around 102 miles and a long-range option of about 160 miles.

Geely has been busy setting up such deals, including one with China's Kandi Technology Corp., to develop, produce and market EVs.

Detroit Electric unveiled its first production vehicle, the SP:01, earlier in April.

Edmunds says: Will this deal with Detroit Electric eventually help to open the door to the Motor City — and the rest of the U.S. — for Geely?
