SINGAPORE — The Caterham AeroSeven Concept, which debuted on Friday, hints at the styling direction for the sports car being developed with Renault.

Caterham says the concept "signals the brand's intentions" and hints at "its styling direction for future models, including the new sports car being developed in conjunction with Renault and due for release in early 2016." The concept is significant because the iconic Caterham Seven has remained largely unchanged for decades.

The concept, which is based on the current Seven CSR platform, is also the "first glimpse" of a new road model to arrive in 2014, said Caterham. Pricing on that model, slated for U.K. showrooms in autumn 2014, was not announced. Caterham has not disclosed any U.S. plans for the car.

The AeroSeven Concept is the first Caterham model to be fitted with traction control. The traction control setup features a launch control function.

The car is equipped with the proven 237-horsepower 2.0-liter Ford Duratec four-cylinder engine linked to a six-speed manual transmission that drives the rear wheels.

"Over the coming months, project engineers will be assessing a number of power plant options for the final production version," said Caterham.

The company describes the styling of the AeroSeven Concept as "aerodynamic." The new look is said to increase downforce while improving the drag coefficient.

The race-inspired steering wheel includes a "Pit Lane speed limiter."

The SingTel Singapore Grand Prix provided the setting for the unveiling of the AeroSeven Concept.

Edmunds says: Caterham appears to be emerging from a time warp with the Aeroseven Concept. But how will purists react to the changes?
