Just the Facts:
  • The redesigned 2016 Smart Fortwo coupe will arrive at U.S. dealerships in fall 2015.
  • The 2016 Smart Fortwo looks a bit more like a traditional hatchback as it aims to better target such competitors as the Chevrolet Spark, Fiat 500 and Scion iQ.
  • The Smart Forfour is currently not confirmed for the U.S. market.

BERLIN The redesigned 2016 Smart Fortwo coupe will arrive at U.S. dealerships in fall 2015, Mercedes-Benz USA said on Wednesday. The 2016 Smart Fortwo and Smart Forfour will debut at the 2014 Paris Auto Show.

The Smart Forfour is currently not confirmed for the U.S. market, said Mercedes-Benz.

Smart's redesigned small cars offer "more space, more color and more equipment," the automaker said.

The 2016 Smart Fortwo looks a bit more like a traditional hatchback as it aims to better target such competitors as the Chevrolet Spark, Fiat 500 and Scion iQ. The redesign results in a more pronounced nose, a wider track and a so-called "two-box" profile.

A slightly larger grille is in keeping with the car's more grown-up appearance.

The Fortwo, one of the most radical-looking cars on American roads, retains its two-tone appearance and gets new exterior colors and around 40 combination options. New exterior colors include Moon White, Lava Orange and Hazel Brown.

Smart only released technical specifications for the European market. The new cars launch in Europe in November.

The three-cylinder engines there include versions rated at 60 horsepower, 71 hp and 90 hp. Transmission choices include a five-speed manual or a six-speed dual-clutch automatic.

Other changes for the 2016 model year include a new MacPherson suspension and an optional Sports suspension package that provides firmer springs. The Smart Fortwo also has an improved turning circle.

Standard safety features include a driver knee airbag and Crosswind Assist, which automatically brakes the car when it is drifting off track.

"As a result, less countersteering effort is required of the driver," said Mercedes-Benz.

U.S. pricing on the 2016 Smart Fortwo has not been released.

Edmunds says: Lots of questions about the 2016 Smart Fortwo remain for U.S. buyers. We will fill in the blanks as the information becomes available.

  • Oh believe me there will be NO competition for the Chevy Spark. The Spark is crap. We have a 2014. Bought it new and it's back in the shop for the 4th time for the same issue. Only has 7000 miles on it and the rear hatch assembly broke and the right rear TPS warning light refuses to go off. The dealership LOST the car last week and had NO clue where it was after we dropped it off. I drive a 2015 Smart fortwo-Brabus NOTHING compares to my smart. It's my 3rd. LOVE the fit and finish. The non mechanical issues and being a Brabus it's a blast to drive. We are waiting for the 16's to come to the US and trading in that POS Spark for the new smart. There is ZERO competition in the smart class. Proven, tried and true. Long haul or short comfort and styling the little smart wins hands down. 400 miles on my smart and we took the car to Las Vegas from south Texas. Loved it !! No issues at all. GM better get it's act together if they even think they can come close to the smart. Like I said nothing comes close !!! Love the smart car !!! And I have to say once you experience Mercedes Benz service ? Everything else is garbage.

I rode as a passenger once in a Smart and I couldn't wait to get out of it! To each his own, I suppose.

  • I hope it doesn't have the same transmission.
