NEW YORK — A one-of-a-kind Toyota Highlander inspired by the cartoon character SpongeBob SquarePants is about to embark on a U.S. road trip.

The special Highlander is patterned inside and out after the popular Nickelodeon character, a sea sponge who makes his home in a pineapple in the fictional underwater city of Bikini Bottom. Details include a grinning SpongeBob SquarePants emblazoned across the front and sides of the vehicle and grinning cartoon character faces on the Highlander's headrests. The cabin's headliner is an aqua blue that mimics the sea.

The Highlander will visit seven U.S. locations, including the SpongeBob Shellabration in Hollywood, California September 7-8.

Now through November, SpongeBob SquarePants fans can visit Nick.com/Highlander to create their own design for the SpongeBob Toyota Highlander and download kits for family road trips that include SpongeBob-branded printable games and coloring pages. The SpongeBob and Nickelodeon Facebook pages will feature photos of the vehicle's road trip.

"Like the Highlander, SpongeBob is family friendly and just plain fun — what more could you want in a family vehicle and cartoon?" said Jack Hollis, Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. vice president of marketing.

Edmunds says: Toyota wants to bring kids and their parents into the Highlander tent with the help of SpongeBob SquarePants.
