Used 2003 Volvo XC70 Wagon Consumer Reviews
Owner of Two XC70s speaks
We purchased 2 XC70s over a year ago and have only excellent things to report. Purchased the ext warranty on both. Had a problem with the transmission on one, but the dealer stuck with the issue and eventually changed the entire transmission for a new one, not a rebuild. Since then we have clocked over 50K each on both vehicles and have only had routine service done. I have run through snow so deep that it was at the top of my tires while hitting remote areas for cross country skiing and snow shoeing. Cars sit out all winter and both start at first crack of the key. Winter temps of -28C so far. A/C works great, sometimes above 40 C in Kamloops' summers.
VERY Disappointed
We were thrilled to purchase our '03 Volvo XC70 but the excitement didn't last! One thing after another went wrong with the wagon... one year after buying it, the ignition went (sometimes the key would come out, other times it was stuck!)! The ball joints, brakes and rotars were shot. How many times do you have to replace a headlight bulb?!! The straw that broke the camels back: the angle bracket, which cost $2,500!! The car was constantly in the shop, and it was never inexpensive to repair!! We bought this as our family car... Volvo for life? We finally got rid of it and bought a Toyota Highlander Limited!!

My little stylish Swedish utility tank!
What an amazing wagon!!! Bought new straight out of Jim fisher Volvo back in 2002 and have absoulutly loved it ever since!!! I bought it for the reason that we wanted an overall safe wagon for the kids, that was awd and still ready for adventure. This thing is an absoulutly tank in the snow!!! Even on some of the steepest and iciest conditions this beast has never let me down getting up and down the mountain constantly going around struggling SUVs and is even better with studs! For being an 03, it is ahead of its time with all the features throughout it. I mean it has rear facing seats in the back!!! I would highly consider picking one of these guys up and you will never turn back!

One of the best
Our 2003 Volvo XC70 has been truly great. Just passed 263k miles and still going strong. Has never failed to start. Nothing outside of regular wear and tear items have been replaced. I will say the haldex all wheel drive system is known to be problematic and ours has stopped working, but with that said it drives perfectly fine as FWD. We still average 26 mpg. The seats are supremely comfortable, the sound system still delivers. Halogen headlights at night provide pretty decent illumination. Rides and handles very well. The 5 cylinder engine is just a gem. Provides good power and sounds great. I’m actually looking to buy another one as second vehicle. They’re that good. If you’re looking at reviews wondering if buying a used XC70 is a good idea, all I can say is do it! Just make sure it’s been maintained and you are set. Update: it now sits at 285k and still drives great. We replaced the coils about 5k ago and it runs buttery smooth again. Will probably update this again when it hits 300k.

Underwhelmed
I bought my 2003 Volvo XC 70 about 18 months ago and have been pretty underwhelmed. The car looks fine but is very underpowered for a $50,000 (Cdn) premium wagon. The handling is also terrible and the fit and finish leave something to be desired. It is comfortable but the other short comings are just too much. The new 2005 Outback is a much better vehicle with way better performance, handling and hauling capabilities - for $10,000 less (Cdn).
