Have a 1998 V70 2,4 Turbo with AWD with 169,000 miles, the car runs well, I use it mostly for the winter snow. The engine light is on has been for quite some time, has a small leak in one of the vacuum hoses, needs to be put on a smoke machine to find the leak. Does not effect how it runs, as it is a great running car, I use premium fuel gas mileage is not the best. Drive it less than 5000 miles per year, so it is exempt concerning emissions, just replaced emergency brake cable. These cars are built like a truck, safety is there main concern, great for a new driver or if there are children. If you see one pay the extra money to have it check by a mechanic, if they are not taken care of it will cost you big time. If the seller has a problem with you taking the Volvo to a mechanic, walk away. Update 3/5/2019 have a air leak coming from the sunroof, there are about five fixes on the internet / youtube, appears to be a common problem. Does not leak water just air, will let you know next update how the fix went, just hit 170,000 miles not much snow this year so have not driven the Volvo much. Do not use high mileage motor oil like I did it swells the seals, then 3 months later the seals start to leak. Had to have crankshaft seals replaced because of oil leak at a cost of $300.00 which is a good price, no more oil leak. Had a noise on the highway going about 65 mph from the rear, turned out to be the license plate had to be tightened all the way, no more noise.

1998 Volvo V70 AWD fantastic in the snow, rock solid car that do not rust. If you have one that is giving you problems, you did not keep up with the maintenance, or you purchased one that was not maintained. If you purchase one and they are hard to find, especially the older one's, and are not mechanically inclined and do not have a mechanic check it out, well shame on you. 188,000 miles there is no rust on a soon to be 22 year old car, runs great, everything works. The only issues are my speakers are a bit worn from my kids blasting the stereo, using the car for school. Also the driver seat bottom is starting to wear, for safety not a better car to put a new driver in. Update 5/4/2020 I have an exhaust leak not bad and I do not have to fix it because I drive less than 5000 miles a year, but will fix it will update next time on cost. I put a 8 foot ladder inside this car with more room to spare, still runs great but no snow this year. I having some problems with the rear hatch not closing properly some times, might have to purchase a new hatch lock, hope I can find one at salvage yard, new ones are expensive.

Hands down, this is the best car I've ever owned. I'm a college student who does his own Preventative Maintenance & turns his own wrenches: Volvos: easy to work on, rugged, simple. Don't listen to the [non-permissible content removed] get gouged at dealerships. [non-permissible content removed].

A beast of a car

This car was passed down to me, went from my older brother to my sister to me, we have all used this car for college. I have always hated this car because it is a station wagon, but this car won't die. My parents keep up the maintenance, they feel safe with us driving this truck of a car. It sucked up all my stuff that I took to school, has a roof rack but didn't need to use it. This car has features that my friends newer car don't have, plus this Volvo has AWD and does it come handy being at school upstate Pennsylvania. Oh yes hope my parents don't see this but the turbo kicks butt.

This is a really wonderful machine

Having enjoyed driving a 1981 245, a 1989 740, and a 1991 745, I've come to realize that each was a really great machine for me and my family at the time we owned them. Miss the ruggedness of the 245, but don't need that now; prefer the smoother ground-hugging capability of the V70 AWD. Lots of things I could do with the 245 that I don't need to do any more....and couldn't in the V70 if I wanted to. Are Volvos safe? Well, my son totalled my 740 and my daughter totalled the 745, and they're each here to tell the tale....though no longer behind the wheel of anything I own and off my insurance!
