before Ford
I bought this car from a private party when it was 2 years old. It has been a wonderful car to own and drive with the following exceptions: 1) the painted bumpers mar easily, and it's ugly to see the paint scratched off portions 2) the cup holders are a joke; I've replaced them, and they broke again very quickly 3) the a/c doesn't turn off.....in fact there should be climate control installed; but the heater is excellant (guess they use it in sweden more than the a/c?) 4) the leather seats crack, even with my continual maintenance...so suspect quality as being not so good.
Amazing car
I just came through Southern Texas thunderstorm where it was raining so hard visibility was reduced to a couple of car lengths at times, or worse. I knew the car comes with a brighter taillight for just such circumstances, that's number one safety. I also noted how other smaller but good cars handled and even some of the SUV's. I was immediately aware by this that the Volvo 960 is not only safe but handles very well in difficult weather conditions. The rain was pouring down so the drains could not get it off the road fast enough - no matter which road. I was impressed how the Volvo plowed through the water and maintained complete stability. I bought it at 62500 and it's great!!!!
Other reasons to buy a Volvo
After many miles(145,000), I still enjoy driving the car. It handles and brakes exceptionally well for a four- door sedan. The seats and roominess make long drives easy as it is fun to drive. The only complaint is minor. The power does not match its precise handling capabilities. The 2.9 inline-6 is smooth and free-reving but this chasis could handle much more than the 200+hp that came from Sweden. Although not slow by any means, I would like to have sports car acceleration to match the sports car handling.

Pleased except for a few very expensive fixes...AC @ $64,000 miles. Recent $1000 expense to replace vacuum system behind dash to support AC system. Dealership has been very professional and helpful...a "10." Still pretty noisy after trying a variety of tires.
I like this car. (so far)
other then normal engine parts being replaced due to mileage I am quite happy with this car. I do not take it to a dealer. I found a great Volvo-only repair shop that treats its customer great at a fair price.
