Used 2006 Volkswagen Touareg Consumer Reviews
Fun with Touareg
This is a very fine and high quality vehicle. Its gas mileage could be better. I consider this the poor man's Porche.
Love the Touareg
Consumer Reports gave the Touareg V6 low ratings. Their reviews citing "sluggishness" do not consider the tiptronic shifting or "superdrive" options. It is not a racecar, but its performance is more than adequate. Also, I get 19-20mpg in 7,500-8,700ft mountainous terrain using high quality oil; it's as good or better than comparable SUVs. Ice and snow on steep hills -- no problem; the Toureg outperforms our Subaru Outback on ice because of the locking differential and torque. The heated seats sure do help on cold mornings. For driving performance, there is very little lean around corners; I feel safe while driving and would recommend this truck to anyone.

Loving it!
I purchased my Touareg three week ago, and I absolutely love it. Its fun to drive, and it feels great. The interior is second to none. I considered several other SUVs in its class, and the Touareg's interior was far superior. I do however, wish that it had slightly quicker acceleration, which I hear is obtainable with the V8. I also would have liked to have had an optional third row seat. The Toureg is more spacious than some of its competitors as a result of leaving the third row out. So, thats a toss up. Even with the three rows down in some of the other SUVS it felt congested. There is no congestion in the Toureg. The only downside to purchasing the Touareg is the frequent trips to refuel. GO FOR IT.
The German Sherman
What a fabulous vehicle! I have a 3.2L V6 fully loaded in Light Blue and Gray interior. Without question this is the best handling SUV on the road and one of the most comfortable to drive on or off. I've thrown this new vehilce around all kinds of corners and it just keeps on sticking. The V6 engine is slightly underpowered during uphill acceleration at 240 HP but this will be upgraded for '07 to 280 HP. Its gas mileage is well... very SUV. It has an annoying wheel balance/alignment issue which the dealership says shouldn't be fixed under 6,000 miles to avoid future problems. Otherwise this truck is perfect.
2nd to none
I looked at 'em all and the 2006 Volkswagen Touareg is by far the best. My single complaint is that the V6 needs a little more get-up-and- go. The lack of power wouldn't keep me from buying the vehicle again, but it is a minor drawback. However, the positives far outweigh the negatives on this vehicle. It handles incredibly well given it's weight - you actually feel safer because it feels like you are driving a tank built by Porsche. I almost didn't look at this vehicle because VW has done a poor of job advertising. Even their website and brochure do not describe this vehicle well. Some of the coolest features aren't found in their literature. Believe me, one test drive & your hooked.
This SUV Deserves Much Better
This car deserves much better reviews from the so-called experts. I find it to be an ideal size, easy to get in and out, nothing rattles, the tolerances in the body work are amazingly tight, and the paintwork is flawless. Also the chrome, beautiful wheels and an interior matche Mercedes-Benz any time. The list of standard equipment is comprehensive, you hardly need anything else. Off-Road work on our ranches is no problem at all, with high and low 4wheel drive and locked differentials and on road driving is a pleasure.
The Best 4WD
The 2006 Volkswagen Touareg V8 is probably the most fun truck to drive. It rides very smoothly ( you don't realize you are driving 80 mph). It has no wind, road, or engine noise. It is very pacious and has a solid and luxurious feel. It has a lot of features that I really enjoy and that makes the driving experience a real delight. It is a German engineered ride at a lesser price!
Clunky When Changing Gears
I have had my Touareg for two months and I like it, but it makes a lot of noises. When driving along and you take your foot of gas it slows down to 20 miles an hour then when you hit gas it clunks into gear. I took it to the dealer and they say that this is normal. I have had other SUVs and that has never been the case. If i would have noticed that when test driving I would not have bought the truck. Other then that the, Touareg is nice. The clunking gears is what I do not like.
Beautiful, but Ugly Gas Mileage
Overall I love the truck...but I am finding some of the features difficult to use like the trip computer and even the a/c. The Volkswagen Touareg drives awesome though and makes up for the few shortcomings stated above. I haven't taken it up to the mountains yet, but I intend to go up next weekend and I will write another review at that time. Oh, I almost forgot about the terrible gas mileage 13 mpg. VW needs to offer the Touared in front wheel drive to improve the gas mileage.
Fear and Loathing
I bought a 2005 Touareg without researching after my first test drive. Nine days later, in the shop, I was given a loaner, and 30 days later a new 2006 model! The 2006 is a big improvement, fun to drive, and very comfortable. Its gas milage is horrible, but she's pretty. I won't buy another, but as long as she runs I'll realy enjoy her.
