Design complaints: - 1.8T engine valve tick/shudder for 1 minute after cold start - sunvisors block no sun! - after 1000 miles, fabric was worn off of door armrest Problems experienced: - check engine light at 1500 miles, now again at 2500 miles - driver's seat loose and could not fix - dashboard rattles and creaks ALL THE TIME (this is what's most irritating) - trip computer now resets itself when car turned off - lots of new driveline vibration when in Drive

One Year Review of 2002 VW Passat

My Passat has run problem free for 11 months and 8600 miles. Ride is smooth and quite on the highway. Highway mileage very good. Averaged 33.8 MPG on a recent 600 mile round trip. Turbo is smooth on the highway a bit of turbo lag in city driving. Overall quality of vehicle is excellent. My only complaint is the comfort of the seats. I previously owned a 1997 Passat GLX with leather seating and those seats fit like a glove. My 2002 has the leather seating option but the seats are not very comfortable on long trips. The seat bottoms seam short and the 2002 lacks one adjustment in seat bottom that was present in the 1997.

I replace my commuter car every two years, and have difficulty finding the right blend of a driver's car, safety, good mileage and comfort, let alone a reasonable price. I've always been torn between Japan's reliability, the German's handling, and the Swede's safety; no more! The 2002 1.8T matched with a slick manual is the finiest blend I've ever owned. Nice work VW!

If you are looking for a sedan look no further, this is by far the best sedan you can buy for the money. Just a word of advise, if you are in the Northeastern Ohio area, check out Dave Walter VW in Akron. This is the best VW dealer in the area. I have never had such a pleasant car buying experience.
