This review is for the 2009, but based on my research affects all TDI models. All TDIs have a High Pressure Fuel Pump (HPFP) and they are prone to failure when the diesel fuel gets contaminated. My Diesel somehow got water in the diesel and apparently based on the rust in the tank this had been an on going problem. At 107000 miles the fuel system had to be replaced to the tune of $5,800 dollars. Apparently diesel fuel standards in the US are lower than that of Europe and VW hasn't taken that into consideration. Please CONSIDER this when purchasing.

Purchased this car in October 2008 and have put 12,000 miles on already. So far, it has performed perfectly and my mileage continues to improve the more the car is broken in. Had a small rattle from the seat belt but it was quickly replaced at the dealer. Installed studded snow tires to battle the Utah snow and it never misplaced me. First gear with a manual trans is a bit touchy around town but quite fun otherwise. If you are in stop and go traffic, go for the automatic. Don't let the fake leather stop you from buying, it actually looks pretty nice and no one ever questions otherwise. Would definitely buy over again.

Fuel Pump Failure

DO NOT BUY THIS CAR!! At 30,000 miles the fuel pump failed and VW is trying to pin it on me, even though this is a common problem. They asked me to show them my last 5 fuel reciepts. I don't save fuel reciepts, not many people do. The seats are not comfortable, my back hurts after riding in this car for a half hour. If they solve the fuel pump issue I'll either replace the driver seat, or have it redone by an upholstery shop.

This is a risky car to own.

I just sold my 09 TDI Jetta today. I will miss it, it was SO much fun to drive on the high-way. Fuel pumps (HPFP) are failing in this model, repair can cost $8 - $10K. VW is being very wissy-washy about covering what appears to be a growing issue. To much risk for me, good luck if you decide to buy.

Just a test drive

First I should say that I only test drove the car. I found the seats to be very comfortable. I love that they lay almost flat (I like to nap during lunch). Heated seats were nice. I found 6th gear to be too weak and was downshifting to go uphill on the Highway. With the turbo the car feels faster than it is, but with the torque and MPG, this is the perfect cross country car. I just think that 6th gear is only good for flat driving.
