Used 1999 Volkswagen Jetta Consumer Reviews
One for the road
This was the Jetta IV. I bought it new with a sunroof, VR6, 5 speed manual, mag wheels. It was my third VW. I expected a well constructed, reliable, German automobile with fair service at the dealership. It is reliable, but something is always in need of repair. Service at a dealer is a killer... $700+ to replace an alternator. Problems: the alternator, springs keep falling out of the front seats, cup holder breaks easily, glove compartment door broke, AM radio has never worked, regulators on two front windows broke, motor on right rear window shot, both water pumps repleaced, MAF sensor replaced, O2 sensors in cat replaced, antenna cracked, headlight covers have fogged over, surge

I LOVE MY CAR:)
This car has been a terrible mistake
This car has been one continual headache after another. The windows continue to fall off the tracks. We go get them fixed and then the glass falls down inside the door with a loud thud again. During the warm weather, large amounts of grease from the window mechanism leaks down through door and on to the frame where you get in and out of the car--getting on your clothes. We have had many other problems besides this, so I definitely would not recommend anyone to purchase a Volkswagen.
BEWARE!!!!!!!!
This is the absolute worse car Ive even owned. Ive dubbed it Christine. Lets see there in the O2 sensor issue. the green-ooze that drips out of door onto frame, the horrible gas mileage the tail light that needs to be replaced ever month, the moon roof comes off the tracks, the gas tank door wont latch anymore, leaking off oil, the safety belt latch keeps breaking. Customer Service of VW, they SUCK and are RUDE. Not to mention when my Jetta broke down in the middle of a Midwest Winter two hours from my house, they didnt send someone right away and than they lost my car. Yup, didnt know which dealership the car had been taken too, this ordeal lasted over a week.
Overall, great car!
I'm sorry others have had so much frustration with their Jettas. I had a bunch of things go wrong in the first 6 months, but they were all fixed under warranty, so I don't really mind. Nothing has broken twice and nothing has broken out of warranty (36,000 miles in the first year). This dealer and service department are top-notch. I drive an hour for service -- even for oil changes! They are as cheap as Jiffy-lube, and they know it's a VW, not a "Volvo" like JL tried to tell me.
