Used 1999 Volkswagen Jetta Consumer Reviews
AboveAverage
Overall the car is mechanically sound and fun to drive. The VR6 engine is peppy and smooth. The car handles well and is good in the snow. When you shift from a stopped position to Drive or Reverse, the automatic transmission takes a couple of seconds to engage. I had a couple of electrical problems with the motors that operate the sunroof and the windows, they were covered under warranty. There are many features the Jetta comes with that I don't see on some expensive European imports and the car has a solid feel. I purchased one of the very first Jettas with the "new" design and attribute the minor problems with it being a sort of prototype.
Will never by any VW again
Two weeks after purchasing the car air condition went out with pieces falling onto the road. After waiting 4 months, THE DAY I got the vehicle back the starter goes out. After waiting another 5 months for the air conditioning and starter to be fixed finally got to drive my new car for more than two weeks. The cup holder is broke along with glove compartment and other plastic pieces exterior and interior, also seats will stain even if you only spill water. My personal opinion, it is one huge expensive piece of broken plastic. Cheaply made, expensive parts, too much maintenance to keep on the road. But it does get the best gas mileage for any non-hybrid car.
Fun to Drive
I have been very happy with my car, it has been very reliable and I have had not problems with it ever. I would recommend this car for someone who wants a 4 door sports car.
BEWARE!!!!!!!!
This is the absolute worse car Ive even owned. Ive dubbed it Christine. Lets see there in the O2 sensor issue. the green-ooze that drips out of door onto frame, the horrible gas mileage the tail light that needs to be replaced ever month, the moon roof comes off the tracks, the gas tank door wont latch anymore, leaking off oil, the safety belt latch keeps breaking. Customer Service of VW, they SUCK and are RUDE. Not to mention when my Jetta broke down in the middle of a Midwest Winter two hours from my house, they didnt send someone right away and than they lost my car. Yup, didnt know which dealership the car had been taken too, this ordeal lasted over a week.
Overall, great car!
I'm sorry others have had so much frustration with their Jettas. I had a bunch of things go wrong in the first 6 months, but they were all fixed under warranty, so I don't really mind. Nothing has broken twice and nothing has broken out of warranty (36,000 miles in the first year). This dealer and service department are top-notch. I drive an hour for service -- even for oil changes! They are as cheap as Jiffy-lube, and they know it's a VW, not a "Volvo" like JL tried to tell me.
