Don't buy
I recently sold my money pit 94 toyota camry and bought a 97 jetta gt 2.0 5 speed. So when I got the car the guy says it needs a drivers side cv axle replaced and it has a minor oil leak. So I have had this car for about a month and all the struts need replaced, the heater core and thermostat need replaced and as I'm writing this my car is in the shop getting a new upper coolant hose that started leaking really bad and a new o ring seal put on the oil cooler in all I've already put about 2 grand into this thing and everyday is something new wrong with it. Please don't buy a jetta or any Volkswagen they put stuff that needs changed regularly in the dumbest place making it one of the hardest cars I've owned to work on and everything is so cheaply made its sure to fail and need replaced.

This is a crappy car!
I will never own another Volkswagen. The timimg belt went on this one at 94,000! I was told by the Dealer to have it checked at 100,000. Then the transmission went at 112,000. Crappy, crappy car. You need special tools to work on it so you can only go to a VW dealer who charges three times as much as a regular mechanic. My friend who lives in Germany told me that Volkswagen wasn't any good. I should have listened.
Save yourself!
This car sucks! Definitely not worth the money you'll spend. Power window regulators break regularly, all four of them for $350 a pop. Power locks and alarm will malfunction, beware possibly VW service's ploy so you'll dump more money into it. Why even put heated seats, it only lasted less than 3 years and cost $600 to fix. Don't be fooled by its look! Save yourself!
I love my car....but
I bought this car used in '98 and loved driving it from the get go. She has a lot of spirit and really likes to be driven on the open road. Unfortunately, she's not been a cheap car to own. Most recently (last 12 months), I've had to replace the sunroof cassette ($700), the door locks $400...they actually fell out of the car!), and the starter ($600) and had to have the vacuum system fixed ($100). Luckily I haven't been stranded anywhere! Not only that but there are little things that break in the interior that are a pain. I love driving this car and am so attached to her but I'm considering getting rid of her cause I'm afraid of what's going to break next.
Never again
Since I bought my new 97 Jetta, i've had three oil leaks, replaced water pump, radiator, strut mounts/struts, Secondary Air Valve, wiper mechinaism, tires, washer fluid sprayer, engine light comes on, leak detection pump, fog light (which you can't replace yourself), antenna mast, starter, muffler, all belts, trunk lid alignment, tail light and ignition lock modifing. Customer support was rude and unhelpful, now ask me if I would buy another Volkswagon.
