This is the 4th Volkswagen I've owned. Be very careful who you have service a Volkswagen. They are different from most other cars and you can't take them to just any old mechanic. Other than that, learn how to work on it yourself or you will be very disappointed and/or broke. In the 4 years and 40,000 miles I've owned mine I've replaced the starter twice (do not get a rebuilt starter!), valve cover gasket, oil cooler O-ring, complete exhaust system, coil pack, two window regulators, a light in the instrument cluster and other regular maintenance stuff. On the other hand, the interior is very comfortable. Climate control works great and it is fun to drive. Good MPG (have had up to 40 highway)

Never Own a VW again

When I first purchased the car it was a nice performer, but I really didn't know that it would only last about 6 months. Now, it has been the worst car I have ever owned. There are too many mechanical issues to list. I used to own a Honda and I never had any problems with it, ever. I kept up on the maintance, as I do with my VW, and it ran for 250,000 miles. I have 130,000 miles on the VW and I am hoping that a deer jumps out in front of it. It isn't worth anything and I still owe a ton on it. I will never buy another VW again. Next purchase will be a Honda.

Obviously i am typing this so that if anyone reads this about a 96 GLS jetta, just try and find another car. this car has given me so many problems that its not even cool anymore. First off 3/4 windows got replaced. Instrument panel, replaced. Air conditioner, yah doesnt work cause it needs a condenser. Engine mounts, all replaced. Lastly, rebuilt a/t that cost around 3k and now vw tells me i need an air mass meter which is another 300.

Big Disappointment

I bought mine used w/ 23,000 miles. Looked good, ran fine, fun to drive. Then, as soon as i got over 80,000 miles the thing started falling apart....literally. The third brakelight in the rear window fell off. The side moldings on both front doors came off. The passenger side front door lock assembly came out with the key one day. Then the crankshaft broke. I had it rebuilt to the tune of $2200. I foolishly thought that if i had it repaired the car would be good to go for a long time without another major repair. Wrong. The ECM went bad @ 100,000 miles. I traded the thing in on a 2000 Maxima. Good riddance.
