I have a 2006 GTI with DSG. I love this car, it gets great gas milage, it is the funest car I have ever had, I can fold down the back seats and fit anything I need in it. The DSG is a must, it shifts faster than humanly possible, gets better gas mileage compared to the manual, and has been problem free for the entire 87000+ miles on the car. The only thing I don't like about the car is that I love it too much, ex. I always park far out in parking lots. This car has been 100% reliable, never has broken down and maintenance has been cheap. It is loaded with safety features which gives me peace of mind. I am going to drive this car to the grave and then buy another. I know someone who has 179Kmiles

This is the most all around car i could imagine. Its quick and sporty when i need it to be, small enough to park in any space but big enough to carry everything on camping trips and a rooms worth of furniture from ikea(in boxes). Fuel economy is pretty good (but requires premium) and the steering and drive quality are perfect, this car is so fun to drive! But.... finally my engine needed to be rebuilt and the repairs were more than the car was worth. At only 115,000 miles I'm really disappointed to say goodbye to this car but even more frustrated with VW repair costs and the longevity of their cars. The car value should not have fallen so low at this point in the car's life, especially when the GTi is obviously such a great car!

The Black Pearl has Sunk!

Black Pearl, 11/15/2006
2006 Volkswagen GTI 1.8T 2dr Hatchback (1.8L 4cyl Turbo 5A)

My vehicle was damaged on delivery, it had a chip in the windshield, scratches in the paint, and bodyside moldings were damaged, but it was one of the last 5A, cloth, non-sunroof (headroom), Black/Black GTI's left, and since I drive a lot, I wanted a fun factor with economy and power. Then the car developed a body flex which turned out to be a bad hinge in the door. Then it developed rattles in the dashboard and now the rotors pulse and vibrate when stopping. It is a cool car, but I am afraid I have to give it back to VW (Lemon Law) just after 7,000 miles. Too bad, the kids loved daddy's "Turbo." The dealer staff has been pleasant, it's not their fault that this car was made defective.

I bought my 2006 GTI with DSG in March 2009 and have loved every minute of driving it. The power is great through the power band. It's not a great family car but I can fit two car seats in the back with no problem. The only issues I have is with the stereo and the lack of power seats. You would think they would have power seats and a better stereo in the car. But other than that it is great car and fun to drive. Plus if you do a few modifications you will be able keep up with some of the higher end sports sedans and pass the tuner cars. If you are looking for car with individuality, great performance, great styling, and good gas mileage the MKV GTI is your car.

Coming from a VR6 I was expecting the Turbo engine to be disapointing but that was not the case. The 2.0T engine in my new GTI is the best engine ever! It provides the perfect blend of a VR6 and the 1.8T! It is sporty and luxurious all at once!

After couple of thousand miles with the car mostly on the highway I am convinced that this is the best Golf every built by VW. A very stylish appearance combined with a powerful engine and an excellent suspension makes this Golf a sports car for the everyday usage.

I traded up from the Mark IV GTI to this fantastic car. In every way it's an improvement over the previous generation. I can't recommend this car highly enough. It feels like I'm driving a $30,000+ car. It has a buttery engine, super torque, and high quality refinement in the cabin. Hearing the engine pulse through the interior is a true highlight, as is the exhaust note. When you're not gunning it, the interior is so quiet. It has very little road noise. It's truly an escape after a hard day at work. For those that want some exciting get up and go with a refined, grown-up, classy interior, this is it. It gets my highest recommendation. Get in touch with your Fast.

Got a 2006 GTI after my 2004 GTI was destroyed by lightning. I don't like the non-linear response of the turbo, but after two years and 16,000 miles I no longer care. This GTI is more powerful, faster, and much roomier than before. Gets 23mpg in town and the low 30s @ 75mph with cruise. In mkIV GTIs the ESP (traction control) would slam on the brakes at the worst possible time. No longer. VW has transformed ESP into cornering ecstasy. Take a corner too fast, it scrubs off perfectly. Step on the gas in high speed corners, some wheels accelerate and some brake, the car digs in, and away you go. Only a computer can calculate and respond fast enough to do that. Just amazing!

Hurry up. During this month (7/06) VW is offering 0% financing for 36 months on the GTI. I traded in my previus 2004 Jetta GLS Turbo for it and I got it for invoice price. It is a nice upgrade with its HID lights,DSG transmission, and great steering. Don't believe magacines or websites about comparision with the Honda Si. Honda wastes more gasoline. The GTI DSG gets around 23 mpg in the city, plus it has a lot more torque and the tranny is great. I have noticed that even in automatic mode when you release the gas pedal and switch up to the next gear you can go 1,000 rpm in 6th gear and make 30 mph.

Don't Buy This Car If You Want Quality

I am completely and absolutely disgusted with VW. I have to wait for a zone rep to approve repairs on a car that was driven home from the dealer and once to my job. I am not using it again. The field rep isn't coming unil the 27th of this month so I am out a car till then. They are going be over the time (lemon law) before it is fixed. Period end of story, game over. How pathetic is it that I buy a new car and can't use it for over a month because some rep has to "approve" paint and windshield repair? If you are a quality minded person, then you should go elsewhere, VW doesn't care about you...they just want your money.

my first '06 GTI was unfortunately a bit of a lemon. i wrote a sad review titled love/hate relationship. we parted ways, and i subsequently drove 4 other vehicles in 9 months, but i couldn't forget the love i had for my GTI. so i gave VW german engineering another chance, and bought another '06 GTI equipped exactly the same as the first. i love this car! it has been totally reliable, required only routine maintenance (and the occasional recall stuff), handled long road trips and daily commutes with ease. it's a blast to drive in town and on the highway. i'm so glad i gave the GTI a 2d chance. i'm now a VW convert!

I have had so many problems with this car in terms of rattles that it's not even funny. In terms of engine, driving, fun factor, etc., it's great, but when you have to turn your stereo on every single time you drive just so you can drown out the sounds of the rattles, that stinks. I really like the way this car looks, handles and drives, but I have had way too many little problems with this car, noises, quirks, weather strips coming off, to ever want to buy a VW again.

This car is built like a tank. I didn't realize it until after I bought it, but compared to Japanese cars it's a tank. I'm not knocking the Japanese cars, but I believe tin would be a good word to describe the outer materials. The car rides amazing, it is very quiet inside. It is a heavy car as well, so you won't feel the hitting. It is good aerodynamically. The engine is very responsive the torque band is very impressive. It's got good power all over the place. It's not a Corvette, but it is a good compromise. The fuel economy is wonderful. I can usually get above 30 mpg out of it. I would no doubt highly recommend this car. It is a great all around vehicle. Insurance isn't bad either. V Dub rocks.

I love this car! I had a 2002 GTI that was totaled and have anxiously been awaiting the arrival of the MKV. This car leaves nothing to be desired. It has breath-taking acceleration, impeccable design and build quality, as well as looks. It handles well, rides well, and performs well in every regard. Not to mention, starting at $21,000, it's a steal.

This car is great, comfortable, reliable, and FAST! I have done high speeds 6th gear and still had room to go fasterand still felt absolutely solid, and responsive. You can also very frequently bypass gears. Thr leather seats are comfortable and I have not stuck to them which was one reason I was hesatent about buying leather. Overall the GTI is an awesome car, who else puts 10 airbags in there cars for front and REAR passengers? Standard? Not many! VW has thought of everything with this car. Thank you VW!

I traded in a Hummer H2 for this little GTI due to the recent fuel prices. I was only getting 11 mpg city and 15 highway in the H2. Also the H2 only has a 30 gallon tank. It was costing me an additional $300 dollars a month on top of the monthly payment. The GTI gets 24 mpg city and over 30 highway. My fast saves me over $2,000 dollars a year in gas plus I took a loan out for fewer years. My insurance went down as well.

If you're looking for a "hot hatch", look no further. This is it! I've test driven just about everything it its class: The new Civic Si, the Mini Cooper S, the Acura RSX Type-S, you name it. Nothing impressed me like the new GTI. It's real solid and the steering feels very connected. In my opinion, DSG will revolutionize automatic and manual transmissions. My only bad experience was the rattling from the passenger side just a few minutes after taking delivery! Thankfully, my dealership was able to pinpoint and fix it within 1 hour.

This is my 4th VW and 2nd GTI and I have to say that the fit and finish are great, and the performance is what I expected. After driving a Saturn SL2 for 165,000 miles this car's steering is amazingly responsive, the 6-speed gearbox takes a little getting use to, and the brakes do stop you very quickly. Time to go run Redwood and have another Porsche for breakfast!

Since I was young, my dad always has driven a Volkswagen. As I got older his passion turned into my passion for VWs, espicially the golf. I've owned a 1987 4 door golf, a 1985 Jetta, a 2000 gti vr6, and now the new 2006 gti. I can't express how satisfied I am with my new car. I traded in my 2000 vr6 for the 2.0t and had doubts, not anymore. The car is absolutely everything I wanted , from the fit and finish to the performance, it is awesome. VW has come a long way and finally did it right once again.

I went to have my 2003 VW Passat serviced and bought the 2006 GTI after driving it while waiting for my car. This car is a great performer. I purchased the 2.0T with the 6M is the configuration. For the week Ive owned the car has been a pleasure. I had a 1989 Mazda RX-7 about five years ago and the GTI outperforms it hands down. I would recomend this vehicle to anyone who wants German performance/engineering without the BMW price tag. It is also quicker than the Audi TT with the 1.8T.

I love the MKV GTI. After driving Hondas for twenty years I feel like I've really gotten lucky. I commute about 60 miles a day at typical California speeds and get about 30 MPG. I haven't had any serious problems with this car either. The turbo on the GTI is really amazing and gets it going fast with the DSG transmission.

This is my second Volkswagen and I didn't think VW was going to be able to make a better car than my 2001 Jetta, but I was so wrong. The new GTI is amazing! It handles like it's on rails, it is super quick with almost no turbo lag, and has the best interior ever. The seats are comfy and secure you like you were straped into them with a 4 point harnesses. The xenon lights, that come standard, brighten the road extremely well. The brakes and suspension are amazing. It stops on a dime and you never get the feeling that you aren't going to stop in time. The suspension rides so comfortably but handles so well in turns. Honda you better watch out!

After owning a 2003 MINI Cooper S, I can honestly say that there is no comparison between my new GTI and my "old" MINI. The Super charger in MINI definitely had some lag in it but not so with the Turbo in the GTI. The interior quality of the VW is in a far superior class. If the track is where you plan on spending a majority of your time than the MINI is probably the car you want... but for real world driving the GTI is the better choice. The passenger seating is another area where the GTI outclasses the MINI. The GTI is cavernous in seating and hauling accomodations by comparison. If you love shifting gears and the sound of a highly tuned engine winding up it's Turbo than look no farther.

I had been waiting for this car to hit the US market for 3 years, when it was finally here I bought the first one I could find. 2 months later, I couldn't be any happier about my purchase. This car handles exceptionally well, is super fast, looks great, and fits into just about any parking place too! Its interior is spacious, and well laid out, with nothing goofy or cheap looking. Driving it is truly a thrill, period. Basically it puts a huge grin on my face every time I drive or even think about my GTI. Then when I think about how little I had to spend to get a car that makes me so happy, I'm even more thrilled. Kudos VW! Great job, just wish I didn't have to wait so long.

In 2004 at the Paris Auto Salon, I sat in a first-run European-spec 2004 VW GTI in Candy White. The quality of the interior and exquisite attention to detail alone convinced me that I had to have one. Two years later, VWoA released it and I picked one up the second day I was back in the States in Tornado Red (as my German friend said, "the only color of the GTI"). The driving dynamics, build quality, and powerful 2.0TFSI engine all combine to make a magnificent driving experience. I have yet to suffer a single problem (knock on wood) with 5,500 miles. I'm lucky to have a wonderful dealer in my area.

My wife and I bought our GTI as a compromise since she hates manual transmissions. Get the SMG option and this car is PERFECT. I have been converted. The clutch pedal is now a dinosaur. This thing shifts faster and MUCH smoother than a standard shifter (note 0-60 is faster too with SMG). There is a fully automatic mode too. The car is very fast, has a buttery smooth engine and tranny, and is extremely comfortable (I have a bad back). Its handling is crisp and precise, great steering wheel feel. My previous car was a Mazda Miata, and this thing is even more tossable in corners and fun to drive.

My son and I just bought a pair of matching GTIs. I can't tell you how impressed we are! They are very fast, comfortable, economical and just plain fun! A word of caution to all who are contemplating getting the ground effects kit. I had mine installed yesterday and found that the factory black side skirts are epoxied on! When they removed them some paint came with it! After a minor paint and buff on the glue areas it's perfect. I wish I could post a picture because the improvement in looks is well worth it! The original black trim is too "Golf" looking to me. The DSG is simply amazing and the handling and brakes are superb. I would highly recommend this car to anyone....period.

I moved from a Mark IV Jetta to this car. I really liked the Jetta's combination of high quality feeling and good looking interior with an appealing exterior. The new GTI takes all of the things I liked about the Jetta and moves them up a few notches. I opted to get package 2 which includes many great options like heated, leather, sport seats, a great sunroof, 6-disk CD changer, and much more. I like the overall feel of this car better than anything. The interior is better than many cars costing substantially more. It just seems like it was designed with all the things I want, the way I want them. Great Car!

This is an amazing car for the price and offers great little features not found in normal cars! I love the FSI (fuel straight injection) because it delivers a constant torque to the wheels throughout the acceleration! Although the car looks small it is actually rather comfortable and roomy inside! I'm a 6 foot guy and I still manage to get about 5 inches of headroom in the back seats! The interior is amazing as well as the blue or red LED display. The stock auto leveling xenon lights and audio controls in the steering wheel are awesome! The ride is comfortable when dealing with big dips in highways and small humps in the city streets. This is an amazing car and well worth the price I paid!

I purchased a 2006 GTI in June. My vehicle is has less than 3,000 miles on it. I gave it to my son for doing well in high school and earning a college scholarship. On his first trip to school from Clearwater, FL to Florence, SC the A/C compressor cracked in half, backed off the enginge and shreded the belt. He made it as far as Orlando. The parts are back ordered three weeks. The mechanic at VW informed me that he has three Passats waiting for the same part. It appears to be a recall candidate, yet VW America denies any issues. I purchased this vehicle for piece of mind as my son's campus is about 500 miles away and it breaks down on first trip to school. VW's customer service has been terrible. Beware, 2006 GTI may be fun to drive, but it has problems.

This vehicle has had 3 cracked windshields in less than 2 years, and we can't see where anything hit it causing the crack. What we have seen is the crack occurs in an unusual pattern each time, in a 90 degree angle, looking like an "L" shape. The dealership says it's a coincidence. We disagree. Even the dealership says they haven't seen this pattern of crack before but they deny it has to do with the window shield frame or the installation pattern. We are sick of dealing with this and are worried that this is going to affect our premium for insurance.

Only The Best

First off, the GTI is definitely not slow. 200 horsepower in a small hatchback runs it in the 1/4 mile in about 14.7. That is a fast car. The styling also does not stink. It has great exterior and interior styling. I love the looks of this car, but that is a personal opinion thing. Last but not least are the seats. I have nothing else to say except my dad has a C6 Corvette and I like my seats better. Besides the fact that you can get plaid, like I did, they are supportive and hold you in the turns.

I just bought my first VW and it is a 2006 New GTI (2.0 turbo). I am very impressed by the handling and performance of this car and would highly recommend it to others. It is fun to drive, decent on gas, has pleny of leg room, and it is FAST! I test drove one last week and when I came back home I made the decision to go out and by this car the next day. I have no regrets.

I test drove the 2005 Volkswagen GTI and the purchased the 2006 model. There is no comparison between the two. The new GTI is twice the car, it's a lot smoother, has no no turbo lag, and runs at lower rpm with its 6-speed manual transmission. It is just a great car!

Before I drove small BMWs but grew tired of their narrow interiors (I am 6.6 ft. tall). I was amazed by the GTIs spaciousness even on the back seats. And once driven I was hooked. Perfect steering, enormous power and the most fun to drive gear unit ever (DSG). Plus the GTI omits the shriekness of most other hot hatches.

I have in all my life never driven a car that is as much fun as my new GTI. I am 27, so I have had the opportunity to drive a few. The acceleration, handling, and above all else DSG are amazing. Point blank this automatic is by far the best thing on the market today. Don't believe me? Go drive one, but be prepared, after driving one of these babies you'll never want to get back in your old car. So make sure you have your checkbook!

The 2006 Volkswagen GTI is great to drive, quick off the mark, finally capable of keeping up with the Opel OPC, has a smooth ride, and great comfort. You have got to love German engineering.

This new GTI is everything the hot hatchback should be. It's quick off the line, has plenty of room and usability, is incredibly fun to drive, and gets pretty good gas mileage. I traded in my '02 Jetta for this car, and went from a true manual to the new DSG transmissoin, but couldn't be happier. The new transmission is what got me interested in this car, and I have to say it has all the benefits of both manual and auto trannies, and no drawbacks. The new styling is splendid, and the plaid interior makes you get in and say "I love this car"

I just bought it on 5/17 and the only thing I'm unhappy about is having to wait so long for lunch and to go home! I don't know what it takes for some of you to rate a car highly, but this is the best vehicle I've owned out of 30. It has unbelievable handling, a superb interior, it's full of features, and I got 26 mpg on the first tank. This car has that intangible "right" feel like no other. Its power is an absolute blast, it's fun to embarrass other cars that cost quite a bit more. Its suspension tuning is spot on. It has safety features are everywhere. I felt drunk the first few days of ownership. I also considered the Civic Si sedan, but couldn't wait and 129 lb. ft. of torque won't cut it for me.

This is my second Volkswagen GTI and I must say they get a bad rap on the speed and handling sides. With a straight (no cat) exhaust system and a set of TEIN coils I'm able to hustle Nissan 350Zs and stock Honda S2000s to the point of spin in the moutians. All while being able to clock repeatable 14.4s @ 94 mph at the local drag strip. Try to find that elsewhere with heated seats and 150 mph stability in other cars for $350 a month.

This car is exactly what I thought it would be. It will turn heads with its 18" wheels. One recommendation is get the gorilla gear and GTI mats. Your fast is worth the extra $700. This is a great car, everyone should have one.

The gTI is a sleeper for sure. People are so suprised with this car's performance. Everyone thinks it's like a Sentra or Civic. No way, it's a tuner car for adults.

This car has it all. Comfort and Umph! All gears have something to offer: first and second for zipping around the city, third and fourth for passing / getting out of jams, and fifth and sixth for the long trips and showing off. Yes, 5 and 6 still have plenty of pep. 207 lbs. of torque! Oh... Compare your service plan to the GTI.
