Used 2018 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off Road 4dr Double Cab 4WD 5.0 ft. SB (3.5L 6cyl 6M) Consumer Reviews
Tacoma Monster Destroyed Elephant Hill
A testament to Toyota truck reliability and quality. Bought a 6 speed manual 4 door TRD off road in late march 2018. Wife and I took it out to Canyonlands Utah for some off roading on Memorial day. Stock truck on Elephant Hill was brutal. Loose sand, stair step drops, intense rocks. Lets say factory skid plate is well seasoned at this point with about 4500 miles. The truck took it all in stride and held up to the punishment. After we made it to the camp site remember telling her exactly what's written in the first sentence of this review. Should preface this by stating I am Tacoma addict. Been driving one since 2003. Never modded any of them and never been stuck once off roading. The 2018 truck has given me no reason to change brands. Only strengthened my opinion of the Tacoma line. They have a reputation of reliability and holding their value for a reason. The six speed manual is great. I heard the complaints about the automatic and its relentless shifting. After test driving one, glad I went with the manual. Love this truck, with the electronics package, and manual transmission

Solid truck, terrible technology
The truck is solid and can go anywhere, but the technology is embarrassingly bad. The Entune nav system is garbage. It can't recognize a voice. The map interface is garbage. Also, the built in USB charger doesn't produce enough current to charge a phone while using navigation on the phone, which you have to do because the built in nav system is so bad. Wireless charging is no better. It is located near the heater ducting, so the phone overheats while wirelessly charging in the winter. This truck should have been shipped with Android Auto, which is infinitely better than Toyota's junk. Instead Toyota shipped their junk and did not provide enough details to the aftermarket to produce a proper replacement. Did I mention that the air conditioning unit is undersized, so on hot days it doesn't cool the cab down well? Thank God I'm not in Texas in the summer. The driver aids are good and protect everyone in the truck, but they are a step back from what is in my wife's Mazda. This is likely my first and last Toyota. My next truck will likely be a self driving electric. I don't think Toyota can pull off the technology. They are stuck in the 1990s. Oh yeah, I've had to take the truck in for recalls more in a year than my Subaru needed in a decade. Also, the 5,000 mile oil change is a relic of the past. My Subaru and Mazda were closer to 10,000 miles. Ugh. ...and, I have the manual transmission. The shifter boot is poorly designed and rattles off the shifter regularly. The redeeming part of the truck is that it is solidly built.

Getting used to it
Update 2: 2.5 years and I've grown to love the Taco. What vehicle does more for less? I couldn't imagine what I would buy to replace it other than a 2021 Taco. Update 1: I had a TSB installed and the drivability issue is much improved. I've now owned it for 1.5 years. I have a Tesla model S in the garage, but I take the Taco 9 times out of 10. I'm averaging 22 mpg overall. I only get less than 20mpg when I tow something. Everything is still tight and it still looks like new and awesome looks don't grow old. KBB says its private party sale value is within $3k of what I paid for it new. Old review: It has very poor drivability for a modern vehicle. The transmission shifts too soon, then acceleration stops, then you give it more gas, then it down shifts! 1,2,3,4,5,6,5,6. For a modern engine it vibrates too much.
