3rd Tacoma for me; Best yet!

Replaced a 2010 Tacoma with this 2016 TRD Sport 2WD short bed. The 2010 held great value, it was rear-ended and the towing package/hitch bent up under the truck and broke/bent the frame in 3 places and buckled the composite bed. At 6 years old and 87K miles it held 89% of it's original value. The 2016 rides smoother and is significantly quieter. The interior seems to be "tighter" and of better quality. The technology package is amazing, and the sound system has quality output. The navigation is disappointing when compared to recent Garmin Nuvi's. I've only had the truck for 2 weeks, so that's all the experience I have. June 2017 1 Year Update: My review remains unchanged at 1 year of ownership. I'm at 15K miles and have had no issues. I'm disappointed to see Consumer Reports ratings of this truck below average: but I've experienced no issues, maintenance still covered by ToyotaCares, likely for another year based on mileage.

West Alabama Tacoma D-Cab TRD 4x4

I had my previous truck, a Ford, for 13 years. When it comes out of the shop, it goes to my in-laws. I loved that truck. So after test driving several brands and deciding on the Tacoma Double Cab TRD 4x4, made the purchase. This is the first month of driving, but I have been through the truck inside and out, read through all the manuals, checked out every control and taken the truck on the highway, in the city and off road. My overall reaction is pleasantly surprised but not fanatically enthusiastic. This may change in time as I am still used to my old truck and waiting to find out how the Tacoma endures the next 10-13 years with me! My main concern is long-term reliability of the components, especially the plastic fascia trim on the front and rear. I am an old-school guy who likes metal bumpers and metal components that don't flex when you push or pull on them. I am certain I can put my fist through the plastic front grill, but at least the radiator and engine block are a good 12" behind that flimsy front. Off road, the Tacoma handles much better than any other 4x4 I have owed and is much more capable. Soggy embankments and ditches covered in rain-fresh 3 foot field grass weren't a problem. No bottoming or spinning. One related issue, I still haven't been able to engage the 'crawl control' even though I am following the manual. The Atkinson engine and paired transmission are another area of concern. At no load and on cruise control at 77 mph over flat to rolling 50 foot elevation changes the engine and transmission occasionally seeks for the optimum rpm and gear ratio. This V6 seems to lack some punch. Out of the four V6 vehicles I have owned, I would rank it at #2 for engine. For off-road #1. I have the trailering package and plan to pull about 2000 pounds next week so that will give me a little more feedback on the engine and tranny. My wife is more tech savvy than me and she is thrilled when driving the new Tacoma. She has paired her iPhone with the Entune audio system so that text messages are spoken to her. Yes, she now thinks this is her truck, (sigh.) Most of my hesitation on giving the Tacoma a five stars thumbs-up all around is based on longevity. If it holds up as well as my wife's decade old Prius, I will be satisfied.

no one told it it was a truck

First off as I still have my 14 year old Ranger, there has been a learning curve, a big one. First off love the truck, and it is easy to enjoy. Used it for work the first week I owned it and while it was not as easy to do the job as it was in the Ranger it filled in well, and had no problems. Truck rides nicer than the Ranger and is gawd awful quick compared to the Ranger. While the Ranger ride is very truckish, the Tacoma is much smoother and is much more comfortable. I am still learning all the bells and whistles, but I find a lot of them very useful. the climate control system took some getting used to, but does its job very well. I am not impressed with the Sirius System and could very well live without it. In fact I will be cancelling g it shortly, as it is so limited in choices. Have not had to use four wheel drive much so far, but when I did it was flawless, and easy to use. Little bit fuel hungry, but this is off set by performance. No one told my truck that it was a pick up truck, as it loves to whoop up on those pesky lil Beer Can Racers, the ones that are souped up mini cars, which is kinda fun. While not as powerful as the Mustang 5.0 I liked, it will get you in big ticket area rel quick. I am also impressed by it have a class 4 towing package. Over all very pleased with mine.

The new 3.5 liter engine does not have great acceleration unless you really hit the pedal. The new engine has more mid-range power, presumably it helps for highway mileage. Great new tech with phone charging pad and the always awesome crawl control. It seemed to get good gas mileage driving around town, better than any full size for sure.

This is my first Tacoma. TRD Sport double-cab automatic with tech package (except no JBL). Gray with tonneau cover. I'm in my early 50s and haven't had a truck since my late 20s. Since then I've driven small SUVs, but wanted to get back in a truck. I ordered it in late December and it arrived in early March and couldn't be happier. The first thing I noticed when driving it...is that is definitely a "truck" and feels very substantial which is exactly what I wanted. After ordering it, I read quite a few negative reviews and was a little worried. But I'm not having any of the negative issues that some people have listed. No vibration issues, transmission behaves like most vehicles with a 6 speed...yes it tries to keep the RPM range a little low, but all vehicle manufacturers have to squeeze every mpg out they can. As long as you don't have a lead foot, it really isn't noticeable around town at all. On the interstate, it will shift down to 5th but every other vehicle I owned also shifted down going up a hill. No big deal. As far as gas mileage, I average around 20 mpg around town and 23-25 mpg on the highway. I was in a construction zone driving 55-60 mph and got 28 mpg. Definitely decreases the faster you go, but overall not bad. The negatives are minor. I'm 5' 8" and the side mirrors sort of create a blind spot at 4 way stops. I like using Google Maps with my iPhone better than the navigation system, and when I'm listening to XM, the bluetooth speaker won't announce the turns. Those are two minor issues. Everything else is great! I mainly bought the truck based on reliability, looks, and resale value. So far, so good!
