I recently completed a 4400 mile trip starting in South Texas and ending up at Bryce Canyon, Utah. The truck labored excessively on highway grades of 5 to 7%. The continuous down shifting and up shifting of the transmission was extremely distracting. I finally engaged the select shift in third or fourth gear to navigate these grades. Towing a small trailer with 1800 pounds of load continues to be a challenge with this engine/transmission combination. It is difficult to maintain posted speed limits when towing. Expect about 10.5 MPG when towing with a total GVW of 3500#. On the other hand, after 10,000 miles the fuel economy improved. Combined MPG is now 19.5. Pure highway MPG improved to about 22. The truck handles well when not towing, and handles ok when towing. The truck rides well enough for a four wheel drive. Toyota needs to seriously address the issues on the performance side. Toyota also needs to address a harmonic frequency (noise) emitting from the front end when driving into 30 to 40 MPH headwinds. Update at 24,000 miles: I took the vehicle to dealership @ 17,330 miles to address performance issues. Toyota had issued a technical bulletin with a program update to address shifting, radio, and noise (control arms) problems. The dealership updated ECM with TSB-0077-16. The radio software was updated as well. I have to admit, the truck performs better in most regards. Trailer towing has improved, and the transmission/engine shift points are better. The dealership installed rubber plugs in the lower control arms, but this fix has not solved the problem. The engine power is still lacking although, improved after the ECM program updates. I am more satisfied with the vehicle at the present time. Update at 30,000 miles: The dealership replaced the windshield and driver door seals, and the loud and extremely distracting harmonic noise has been quieted. Currently, my Tacoma has been at the dealership for nine weeks waiting for delivery of rear differential parts to repair to the differential leak. Yes, nine weeks for a differential seal. Wow, what is going on with Toyota? I must add that I have no issues or complaints with the service department at Toyota of Victoria. The dealership has bent over backwards to assist me during this period of absolute frustration with Toyota. Update: the dealership had not received parts to repair rear differential after five months. The dealership offered a fair buy back on the Tacoma and I purchased a Tundra. I will not purchase another Tacoma unless it’s a an older model than a 2016.

Overall really poor quality for a Toyota

Really really poor quality for a Toyota product as I have owned or driven them for large parts of my life. So lets start with the exterior. Very crappy paint, as it is very easy to scratch, have a new scratch just from my summer coat sleeve, and one from just leaning my fishing pole against the side for a second to close the tailgate, in some ways its almost like it didn't get a clear coat. The metal exterior shell is flimsy and the doors sound hallow when you close them, and just seem extremely cheap construction. So on to the interior: From the start the heating/AC system made a really high pitched almost squealing sound for the first 5-7 minutes each time you start using it then would go away. During the first heavy rain the Truck started leaking water into the passenger side thru the passenger handle which has an airbag in it, after inspection at least 1 seem on that side of the vehicle was not welded at the factory. Which the dealer said will take a bit of time to fix and would need to keep the truck. Which want to then charge me for the rental for a MFG defect. This is all in the first just over 3 months of owning the new Tacoma. I would not recommend it to anyone until they 1 upgrade the crappy materials and construction to include a better quality control system at factory. Though I do like the new overall look and additions both inside and out of the 2016 Tacoma, the quality is completely void in this years model. Now just over 2.5 years into owning the truck and having purchased the extended care plans, were basically told by Toyota they can't do anything to get my truck fixed because the local dealer is basically running a scam. With just about 17500 miles I went in for my 20k service and was told they did it at 13k and would just do the 25k service which is a tire rotation and they couldn't do the other warranty maintenance on the car because they didn't have people that could do it even though it was a scheduled appointment. Called Toyota HQ and was basically told oh well nothing they can do about it. Long story short DO NOT by a Toyota.

TRD Double Cab Off Road 6' bed Review (Updated)

(Updated) In short, I traded the truck in for a 2016 Silverado. Several thousand miles and ownership has changed my tune. The reason was two-fold. First, the front seats are horrible. A few long trips and my wife began saying "we aren't taking your truck are we?" This from a fit 120lb woman.....and I agreed with her. The interesting thing is my Son's 20 year old 4-runner has more comfortable seats than the new Tacoma. 2nd was the engine and the constant shifting of the automatic tranny.....it simply drove me nuts. I am now in a 8 speed Chevy Silverado...and it's the best $4K loss I ever took in swapping out the Tacoma and getting into the Silverado. This is my first Tacoma, and I purchased it based on reputation for durability and strong resale. After 800 miles consisting of commuting, couple trips to Mt. Hood for skiing along with some light duty hauling, I would recommend this truck. The Pros: Off-road ability, there is just no other "off the shelf" mid size with this trucks capability and although I have yet to challenge the truck, i am looking forward to it. The cabin is excellent with simple switch gear, dials and easy to read gauges. The tech package, with the 7" nav/audio system is fantastic. Easy to use and intuitive, it puts my fathers Jeep Grand Cherokee infotainment system to shame. (still trying to figure that one out!). And the other big "Pro" for me is the quiet ride. The engineers really made the cab a nice and quiet place where you can have a conversation or listen to music in a nice acoustic atmosphere. The Cons: The 6 speed tranny is constantly on the hunt....it's annoying and Toyota should address it. The Power ETC button....WTF Toyota? It's as if the engineers knew the FI mapping was all wrong so they settled with a "Power ETC" button which seems to remap the fuel delivery to give more power???? I'm clearly speculating here, but the point is don't have a button for "power etc"...just give us the damn power. Lastly, it's true on the front seat....very limited adjustment. Make sure you take a good long test drive and you are happy with the seat. For me, the seat is quite good, so it wasn't a deal killer, but I do understand the complaints out there on the lack of adjust ability. In the end, every car/truck/SUV I have owned over the years has some compromise, so does this truck. However, overall I am quite pleased with the truck, and I really enjoy driving it. It will haul my dirt bikes, get me to the mountain skiing, and I have zero concerns of driving it right onto the beach and not getting stuck....and in the end, this is why I purchased it.....to use it....and again, what truck in this class can do it better?

The Random Ramblings of a Taco Owner.

You should buy this vehicle if you're looking for someone who does light-moderate hauling or towing. If you're someone who hits the trails and frequents off-pavement sites and/or traverses through bad weather/terrain, this is a vehicle you should consider. If you need to fit three car seats in the back, this truck will also fit the bill. If you want something that is reliable, then this is a truck you should consider. If you care about strong resale value, this is a truck you should consider. If you expect a lot of low-end grunt, you may be disappointed. The torque peak is at 4600 rpm. The truck is somewhat underwhelming in the lower end because of its relative lack of torque and because the transmission is biased towards mileage. The horsepower peak is 6000 rpm (100 rpm short of the rev limiter (as far as I know)). If you want this thing to move with any gusto, you will have to floor board it (the throttle may be biased towards off roading where the throttle should be feathered). The cruise control also has some interesting behavior. On anything that is perceived as a grade, the transmission will down shift. However, once the grade flattens out, the transmission will not shift back up. You either have to disengage the cruise control or manually shift it yourself. The transmission has two overdrive gears both of which are essentially useless on anything other than flat surfaces. The programming is also somewhat strange. There is fair amount of rev hanging in the lower gears. Downshifts also sometimes result is a jolt (sort of like You startled the transmission by asking for a downshift). I also purchased the Tacoma for its MPG ratings. It's a truck so I don't expect to get 36 mpg on the highway, but so far I cannot even hit the combined rating on its EPA sticker (21 MPG). I range from 16-18 MPG (even with judicious use of the throttle). Granted, I have off road tires and the chin spoiler delete (I suspect these may be good for 1 MPG). Interior quality is fairly good. I'm not very tall (5'9 and 210 lbs). After playing with the manual adjustments on the seat, I did manage to find a good seating position. For a truck, I think the handling and braking are decent. I don't tow anything and haven't carried any heavy loads in the bed so I cannot really say whether or not I miss disc brakes at the rear. As for the ride quality, I drove a 2015 with the TRD off-road suspension and it seems better controlled in the 2016. Wind noise is also markedly reduced in the 2016. Some cost cutting is apparent in this truck. I appreciate the smart key system but you can only get in on the driver's side. Most of the time, it suits me just fine but sometimes I need to grab something out of the passenger side of the truck. I'm not sure of the reasoning behind this move. Another area where some cost cutting may have occurred is the decision to use the drum brakes in the rear. With regards to repairs, my alignment was off twice. A set of tires was replaced at 23k miles. I’ve had the rear brakes leak. The transfer case also sprung a leak. The power steering rack needed replacement. All repaired under warranty. I now have 47k miles on it. No issues since the last review. I do light off roading but nothing difficult. Crawl control works well but be prepared for a lot of pumping and clicking from the ABS as it works. Overall, the 2016 Tacoma is not perfect, but it's a solid value.
