Toyota Quality And Integrety Hits Bottom

I own a 2009 Toyota Tacoma Sport. This is their top model with the most expensive tag yet the aluminum coating is peeling off the base metal on the rims. I contacted customer service and was told to take it to a dealership for inspection. The conclusion, (or should I say collusion as they appeared to know what the answer was going to be from corporate headquarters) , was that the bubbling and peeling was due to exposure to the elements. Toyota says it's normal usage issues and not their problem because the 3/36,000 warranty is over. All I could do is apologize for not having the forethought to bring them in at night. The value of the truck is now thousands less because the rims are peeled and bubbled so bad and guess who looses? Bottom line is don't buy a Toyota with aluminum rims or better yet don't trust Toyota until they start acting like the company they once were.

11+ years and going strong

4th Update: September 2022 - Still going @111K miles. Other than Gas and Filters, this truck needs nothing. 3rd UPDATE: March 2022 - Still going strong. 2nd UPDATE: March 2021 - The truck just exceeded 100K miles, so I put new tires and shocks on all around. I'm not sure that the tire balance or alignment were done well, because there is a little vibration in the steering wheel, and the company that did the alignment did not provide a report. Other than that, the truck is still great, and no unexpected repairs. I have proactively replaced the serpentine belt, the pulley on the alternator (corrosion), the ATF and filter, and all four TPMS sensors. Barring accidents, I should be able to continue to drive THIS truck for another 9 years. UPDATE: September 2019 - This truck still runs and drives like new. In the past year I have done the following: one coat of wax, driven 10K miles, completed two tire rotations, oil & oil filter changes, cleaned the MAF and throttle body, installed new front brake pads and rotors and flushed the brake lines, replaced the cabin air filter and rear differential oil, replaced the front wheel bearings, and flushed the power steering fluid. Much of the mechanical work SHOULD have been done by the dealer when the frame was replaced, but the dealer technicians do everything as quickly as possible. When I flushed the front brakes I got a lot of old fluid (indicating that the system had not been properly flushed) and AIR (which was a safety issue) because they did not bleed the front brakes! The reason that the dealer tech's. got away with this sloppy work is that the ABS/Traction Control System on the truck is so good, that it masked the problem of having air in the lines. I suspect that the front wheel bearings failed prematurely (92K miles) because the technicians impropery torqued the axle as part of the frame replacement. I will keep the truck AWAY from the dealer to make it last longer. ORIGINAL: I have owned my Toyota Tacoma TRD Access Cab (4x4) since I bought it new in June of 2009. It is now September 2018. THE GOOD: Since buying the truck it has NEVER let me down! I have replaced the tires and front brakes, and continue to do oil changes at 5K mile intervals. Toyota has replaced the rear leaf springs and the frame under warranty. The truck always gets between 19 and 22MPG. THE BAD: Every time that I have the truck serviced at the local dealer (Norwood, MA) I regret it. They try to sell me things that I don't need and grossly overcharge for the things that they sell. Spark Plug change $300 - I did it myself for less than $50. Three hours to complete an oil change - I do this myself, and I lube the driveshaft, in under one hour. I could go on...

Not very happy with my 3rd new 4WD Taco

I have a more positive review earlier by GW7. Now the 3rd radio in my Tacoma is malfunctioning. It will be replaced again under warranty but I now have to question some of Toyota's quality, they just seem to want to keep replacing defective radios until the warranty expires. I have been loyal to Toyota because of reliability, but my patience is wearing thin on this issue.

I bought the truck in June 09. I have had it for about 7 months now. I like the look of the Tacoma. ALL of the switches should be illuminated (ex 4x4), and there should be a foglight "on" indicator. My biggest complaint, like others, is the transmission. The transmission seems to down shift too quickly. After slowing down to turn a corner, it "hunts" to find the right gear. This should be addressed by Toyota.

I have been wanting to purchase this truck since they redesigned it and I finally got it in June 09. I am very happy with my purchase. The truck rides great, handles well has plenty of storage and hauling ability. I got the TRD sport model fully loaded with every option I could add. I really like the JBL stereo but the sub in the back seems to vibrate the plastic interior on particular notes but overall it sounds great and was a good upgrade. The v6 has plenty of power and acceleration to merge on the freeway or pull out into traffic. I loaded the bed up the second day we had it with a heavy reclining sofa and couldn't even tell it was there when driving.
