Used 2001 Toyota Sienna XLE 4dr Minivan (3.0L 6cyl 4A) Consumer Reviews
Sludgemobile
My Sienna developed engine sludge at 80,000 miles and is now at the dealer getting repaired. Unfortunately, they aren't replacing the engine so who knows how soon the problem may return. Along with the squealing brakes when you come to a stop, now I have smoke bellowing from my exhaust when I start the engine cold. I'm very disappointed with the way Toyota has handled this - first misdiagnosing the problem then trying to blame me. Fortunately I have my receipts showing changes every 4500-5500 miles so they couldn't get away with that on me. But it didn't stop them from trying. It is enough to make me take my business to Honda or Nissan.
Almost 250,000 miles and going strong.
Got my 2001 Sienna XLE used almost 5 years ago. It's 17 years old, almost old enough to vote. Almost an adult in age. So there have been some things fail. As you would expect. But everything that has failed has been minor, the engine and powertrains has been amazing. Great acceleration out of the V6, decent mileage. A little after 200,000 miles the engine started burning oil. No leaks at all, just burning it. I switched to a high mileage oil blend, and within 2 oil changes the oil burn had stopped. At almost 250,000 miles it does not burn/leak a drop of oil. All the things that make the car go are holding up amazingly well. Just have to do the normal maintenance: oil, brakes, tires. The things that have failed are annoyances, but not "deal breakers" for me. I have replaced every single exterior door handle. They are plastic, and the replacements are plastic. The driver power door will open under power, but won't close under power most of the time. The JBL stereo system, both front spare surrounds rotted. I was able to replace them with aftermarket parts for not too much money. The other JBL speakers are fine, so that's weird. That's it. It could die tomorrow, but it has been an amazing vehicle.

Very disappointed
Despite the glowing reviews, our 2001 Sienna XLE is one of the worst vehicles we have owned. Its build quality, interior and exterior, leaves much to be desired. The power doors have stopped working, the transmission is leaking, the front speakers went out, the radio head unit is failing, one of the visors is broken, and the fabric and interior overall are poor. I am so disappointed, and my wife hates this vehicle as she has lost confidence in it; we admit that our 2000 Dodge Caravan was a better vehicle, if you can believe that!
never another toyota
We had high expectations but found that the vehicle was plagued with expensive maintenance issues. We have spent nearly $10,000 on mechanical repairs and maintenance over 9 years. Mountain trips with kids and their gear too much for brakes, several complete rebuilds. We finally had brakes retro-fitted with racing discs and pads. We've replaced 3 alternators, two O2 sensors, 2 overdrive solenoids. Service support has been poor. We live in a large city, but parts are never on the shelf. Each time we have required a repair we have lost use of the car for 2 or more days. Over nine years, not with standing routine service, we have probably lost use of the car for 20 to 30 days.
Lovej
The Sienna has been a dependable and great family vehicle. Only problem I have had continuously is with the brake system. It seems either the front or rear brakes are CONSTANTLY squealing and I need to have them adjusted almost immediately after JUST having them adjusted. It is very frustrating. And the only response I get from Toyota is that "yes" this is a common complaint with the Sienna and then a description of how the brakes are made and why this keeps happening. Not happy about this at all. But, overall, has been a good purchase and we think it is a good value. Would like to have a bit more storage, but see Toyota now has it with the 2004/2005 models. Good job!
