Great, great car
This is a great car. Comfortable, fun to drive, fascinating to use such a progressive vehicle. In Vancouver Canada, these things go for two hundred thousand miles between brake pad changes. I shake my head when trolls on this site trash the Prius. Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt (FUD) turns many North Americans off these cars. "10,000 batteries need replacement every few years". "Emergency workers die from electrocution when getting survivors out of Prius wrecks". An Industry funded "study" that showed Hummers were more environmentally friendly than the Prius based on the most ridiculous assumptions i.e. Hummers last 300,000 miles but the Prius lasts only 100,000?, etc, etc.
All's OK @ 65,000 miles
Bought new 4 years ago. Avg. 50+ mpg summer, appx. 47 in Midwest winter. At 6', I find legroom a bit tight. Have driven in 6" snow storms and rain with no problems. It's not as fun to drive as my Mustang GT was, but it's not boring. Have had no quality issues. Have been through all of the recalls. All in all, it's just what we thought it would be when we bought it. Not sure why everyone says hybrids cost a lot....sticker was 22,000 and we got it for 18,700....a lot cheaper than many non-hybrids back then. Feels good to get such good MPG now and back in 2008 when gas skyrocketed.

Glorified Tin Can
I bought this car as a third vehichle for myself- basically to run back and forth to work in and for errands. I certainly did not buy it for its looks going in, but for fuel economy. This car did not deliver as advertised. I am averaging about 35 MPG highway/city driving- not the 50 MPG+ as advertised. I feel sorry for those who have this car as a primary vehichle- it is very uncomfortable after 1/2 hour- seats are hard and headroom is poor. The car is very slow merging on the freeway and keeping up with traffic. Very noisy at speeds of 60 MPH plus The "check engine" light came on, but dealer could not find anything wrong. This is a good car for a teenager or for short trips only.
Good until its NOT
We bought our Prius new in 2007. It worked fine for the first few years but then at around 85k miles the gas mileage suddenly declined. Dealer blamed it on the tires so I went to Les Schwabb and bought a new set of tires designed for hybrids. Mind you, our tires were in good condition but we needed to rule out the tires being the issue so we bought new ones. Sadly, MPG didn't improve. We went from 50 mg to 35 mpg so this was a big deal. Dealer assured us nothing else was wrong though we suspected and suggested that the hybrid battery was failing. They refused to test it in any way and blamed the problem on the tires again. I bought another set from the dealer and MPG went down further. Throughout this ordeal the car and battery were under full warranty but the dealer was unwilling to diagnose the problem. This is the Lithia dealer in Redding, Ca, btw. About a month after our car was out of warranty for the hybrid battery, it failed to start. Dealer said it was the transaxle and quoted us $5k to fix. We took it to an independent hybrid shop and the codes clearly said it was the hybrid battery and they said the dealer had never replaced the spark plugs during its major tune-up even though our receipts read that both were done and paid for. After doing some research we seriously doubted that diagnosis and took the car to an independent hybrid shop. Got the battery and plugs replaced for $2500 and symptoms seemed to go away. However within a month both water pumps went out and car still has intermittent trouble with turning on and off, dashboard lights coming and going, etc. Bottom line is this: (1) our Prius was good for about 5 years of service and then it became one very expensive problem after another and (2) Dealer where we live will say/do anything to avoid having to replace the battery within the 10 year warranty period. Too bad. We used to think Toyota was a good company.

2007 Prius is nice vehicle
I got a 2007 Prius about 1 1/2 years ago. I had always wanted one and I already had a 2000 Honda Insight. I had to fix the melted hatchback opener since Toyota acts like the problem does not exist. I also had a bad experience one morning early in pitch dark when both of my headlights went out simultaneously. I was scared to death. I never drive in the dark any more. Toyota also acts like this headlight problem does not exist. Toyota will never do any work on my car unless they are the last straw. I have lost faith in Toyota. I always thought they were a good car company. Now I know better.
