The XRS is a lot of fun to drive. The six shifts smooth; gates for 5th, 6th and reverse take a little getting used to. Oozes quality and value. Good acceleration and handling. Strong point is ergonomics-big back seat, lotsa versatility, comfortable seats all around. Easy entry/exit for all riders. Also considered loaded Mazda 3s, but the space was not quite on a par with Matrix, and Toyota's interior and comfort appeal to me. Mazda 3s center pillar intruded too far into my right shin.

I love my Matrix!

I had a little Honda before I bought my Matrix. When it came time to purchase a new car I had a tall list of things I wanted. I wanted to get my skis in the back, the ability load it up and haul things, and great gas mileage was essential since I was making an 800 mile round trip at least once a month. The Matrix was the only car to satisfy all those needs. I looked for a month before I found a hard to find used Matrix in my area! As soon as I test drove it I knew it was the car to get. The enginering of the interior is exceptional and makes it very versatile. I show it off to everyone. It's enginered well and the styling is classic. I love my Matrix!

The Mini SUV

Compared this to a Corolla on the dealer lot and was immediately amazed by the amount of interior space and the fact that you don't feel like you're falling into the seat. You are almost sitting at the same level as some SUVs on the road. Gauges and interior controls are well placed and easy to operate. Handling and performance is ok for what you get in this model which is relatively basic. Plenty of room for family of four to get around - even on relatively long trips. We really like the hatchback design. Biggest gripe is the tire wear - we're at 47000 miles and just had to replace tires for the 3rd time and they ain't cheap for this car. Told that Matrix design just burns through tires.

I just purchased a 2005 Matrix XR with option package #2 in silver streak. All I can say is WOW! This car is unbelievably stylish, sophisticated, sporty and practical. The ride is smooth and the XR provides plenty of horsepower with relative ease for my long commutes and city driving. Who would think you could have your cake and est it too in a car? I do and I love it! Mileage is super! Toyota has a solid "10" on this one. Check it out... you'll never drive a suv again (unless you have nothing else to do with your gas money)!

My husband and I were looking at this car to save us with gas prices today. After years of luxury SUVs, we were looking for something simple and efficient. When we went to test drive it, we were purely expecting it to be just adequate. We were so wrong. We loved it! It is quiet and despite being a small engine, it has great drive and pick-up. We have two small children and there is plenty of room even with an adult and two car seats in the back seat. We are so pleased and highly recommend this car to anyone!!!

I traded in my 2003 Tacoma four door in on the Matrix XR. Getting 25 MPG in mostly city driving is a refreshing change. The base engine could use more torque to get it moving. The car handles well and manuvers in parking lots with ease. The interior is very functional and easy to configure. Toyota redid the chin spoiler so it looks better and doesn't scrape like the older models. As with most Toyota's the Matrix will hold its value, be low maintenance and be trouble free over the log haul. It's a good alternative to a SUV. The worst problem I had was blind spots. I bought two small mirrors and the problems solved.

Too bad, I bought this car new, because I'm not a fan. Walking into the dealership it was all about getting a car with good gas mileage. But stepping down from a Subaru Forester made the Matrix's shortcomings more obvious. Dislikes: Seating position. I feel like I'm sitting in a booster chair-- Not comfortable. Puny engine. Toyota sells this car as sporty. If you're looking for somewhat-sporty styling, but poor agility this is your car. Rapid acceleration is labored. The Matrix also seems to rock from front to back. Tires are tiny. Especially dislike occasionally bottoming out in this car with low grills & bumper. Miss everything about my Subaru Forester but the gas mileage

We were shopping for a car that could hual 2 adults and 2 babies with all their gear and still be fun for under 25k. This is it. Forget reviews that suggested sticking to the XR - its fun to rev a car up to nearly 8 grand on the tach. Open the moonroof, turn up the great sounding JBL soundsystem with 6 speakers + subwoofer and let it scream. We needed practicality, we wanted fun, the XRS delivers both. Still a safe car - front and side airbags, ABS and the best brakes I've ever stomped on. Comfy seats, roomy all over for a vehicle in its price range. Drive it and smile.

The drivers seat is the worst I've ever had. No electric seats are available. No leather is available. Extremely uncomfortable. I guess I will have to rent a car when I take a vacation. The interior is cheap with plastic made to look like cow hide. I feel stiff and confined in this vehicle. Not much pick up power when trying to yield into interstate traffic. Headrests block view when backing up or changing into right lanes.

I love this car. It drives so well. I had a small SUV, and it was difficult to drive. So all the storage capabilities of the SUV are in this Matrix, and yet it drives like a car and the gas mileage is like a car. All that see it are very impressed with the style. It's also a fun car to drive.

Pros: Engine good enough to get up my hills. Peppy enough for city/traffic driving. Great versatility. Reliable/dependable so far. Cons: Fuel economy could be better. Brakes not that good. Interior rattling/workmanship issues. High speed cornering "squeakish". Wimpy horn. Weak stereo. Hard to start (battery) sometimes. Some dead areas/lag on the drive by wire acceleration.

The car is standard shift with six forward and one reverse with low profile tires and a factory modified engine that goes to 180 horse and 8,000 rpm. It gets between 30 to 35 mpg. It is part sport car, part economy car, part SUV and is always reliable. It is a fun car to drive. Toyota did not put many of these cars on the market. There are many SRV's with AWD but this is not one. Instead it has a sports car six forward gear standard transmission.

I purchased the Matrix the first year out, and it has been a great car. I find it drives well both in the city and on the highway. I traded a RAV4 for the Matrix and I like it so much better. There is plenty of cargo room and the fuel mileage at this time is a life saver. I have always been a Toyota woman, and have never really been disappointed. For the money, I think this is the best value on the road.

It amazes me how versatile the Matrix is. I have now had it about a week and have put close to 500 miles on it. No complaints! Nothing to return to the dealer for. The storage space with the seats down and the high opening helped this morning. I had four high boxes of Lilies (8 to a box) and had room left over. Interstate driving at 80 mile per hour is quiet and stable. The dealer service was also above average, I LIKE IT!

We bought the base model which did not come with mudflaps or cruise control so those items were added. Only complaint is that the base model does not have power mirrors.

The Matrix XRS is a thrill to drive. It red lines as 8200 rpm with a six speed manual trans. It will not fit into one category well, but does well in many; wagon, sport-wagon, mini SUV, pocket rocket sport car, midget mini van, or many other. With the more powerful engine with Yamaha heads, I still get 30 mpg no matter how hard I run it. The VVTI kicks in at about 6500 rpm and feels like a dirt bike's power band, really puts you back in the seat. A definate 10 on the fun to drive scale. A sport car with unlimited trunk space.

When we were looking to buy, we had a few primary concerns: cargo space, being able to park it in NYC, mileage, price, and of course safety. We're thrilled with the Matrix because it's delivered on all fronts. Playing in a band, I need to haul alot of equipment around with me- it has more than enough space and the plastic cargo area is durable and eases loading in/out. It's shorter (though taller and wider) than the Corolla, and parking even in tight spots has been a breeze. the MPG has been at around 28-32, depending on where i'm driving (city or hwy), and this will go up over the next year or two. i paid 15,000 for it, which i was happy with! and it's gotten great safety ratings!

We bought the Matrix because the wife wanted an SUV and I wanted a Camry, this became our cross breed. The Matrix is a wonderful car, except when backing out of a parking lot, it is made a lot like the Camry, yet it is big enough to to feel like you're driving an SUV. We feel that we have made the best choice that we could have made at the time and are looking into buying a second Matrix.

Wonderful automobile. Had 2004 Toyota Matrix XR and liked it so much that we bought another Toyota Matrix when 04 Toyota was wrecked. Most people I have talked to who saw car after wreck did not understand how I came away without so much as a scratch esp. since car was totalled. Very, very safe vehicle. Well-built and handles very well. Strongly recommend this car for anyone needing economical vehicle, but also needing room for lot of people. I can put 5 in including myself. 04 Matrix had good value and depreciated very little (much less than many other cars over the course of 1 yr).

I just bought this car, but I LOVE it already! This car is awesome. I love the way it looks. It's stylish, fun to drive, and pretty affordable. The Matrix offers a lot of interior room despite it's "small-car" status. I love that I sit up higher on the road than some other cars. The windshield is very wide, so I can see the road better. The car isn't "small", but it's not intimidatingly huge either. It's just perfect for me. Acceleration is nice, and the ride is pretty smooth. The cargo space inside is really roomy and great for those who like to carry cargo/tow a lot of stuff. The seats are actually more comfy than I would have imagined. Overall...GREAT car!

I formerly owned a Nissan Altima which was terrible on the road in the winter months. I saw the Toyota Matrix and I emailed the dealership and I went to test drive the Matrix. The minute I sat in the vehicle I loved it. The seats were very comfortable, the shift was right at your fingertips and I loved the aerodynamic build of the car. I took it out for a test ride it was wonderful. I remember it was snowing that day and it handled amazing. I went back to the dealership and I left with my new Matrix. The Matrix is excellent on gas mileage, easy to get into small parking places, and very convenient when you go shopping with the hatchback. I love my Toyota Matrix the heat is awesome!

The car is great. It's everything I need- enough cargo space to haul around my music and A/V gear. Enough passenger space to carry 5 rather large guys to a ballgame. Better than average fuel economy (I live in NYC and get about 28 city and 38+ highway). I've had no problems with it, and I still love starting it up and driving it. It's really a perfect marriage of form, function, and is extremely well designed.

Perfect for a modern mom and cool enough for my husband to commute to work in. It handles hills & mountainous roads very well (and very fun). I have a baby and a toddler and the car seats fit fine (even with my husband in the front seat... he's 6'5".) Our full size stroller fits great in the back cargo area with room to spare... Just did what my friends called the unbelievable. I traded my '02 Acura TL- S in on my new Silver Streak Matrix XRS. To those who say I traded down I can only say that this car has brought back FUN into the driving routine. While I do miss the heated seats, that's all that I miss. Love the handling and the punchy little engine. The six speed and shifter feel Euro. The cargo space in this car is amazing. For those of you that are weekend warriors you'll love the pop up rear window for 2 x 4s. Got all the toys except Nav. There were only two XRS's in my area. One was the color that I wanted. "Traded down?" Not in my book. P.S. - Stomp on her and still love the improved fuel economy!

I traded in my Jeep Liberty for the Matrix over the summer due to rising gas prices. I didn't want to lose the cargo space I had with the Jeep. I made a great choice. I've been able to haul quite a bit with my Matrix. It has been the perfect substitute for an SUV without the high cost of gas. I'm surprised more SUV owners aren't switching to these as an alternative. I can see myself keeping this car for a long time. It's easy to drive and I've saved quite a bit of money on gas.

I bought a Toyota after having Jeeps, Fords, and Chevy's and I thought I could buy a car that would last 200,000 miles. I was wrong. I am very unhappy with this car and I probably won't buy another Toyota. I will go back to Ford or Chevy. What is wrong: - Constant Chirp, Chirp under the hood. (The belt and tensioner have been fixed and or replaced 4 times.) I only have 71,000 miles on the car. - Drivers door won't unlock without key. - Tires had to be replaced at 15,000 miles. - Fan motor replaced at 45,000 miles as it would not work all the time. I never had a problem with my 1991 Ford Explorer or my 2002 Ford Explorer or my Chevy Pickup (S10). No more Toyota's at my house.

I have had my Matrix for almost 2 years and so far it has been a great car but not without faults. The car is a tad underpowered and not as trouble free as I would expect from Toyota but its not bad either. And the suspension needs some improvement because it is very bouncy over bumps, but it handles very well. The interior is the Matrix best feature by far.

I bought 2005 Matrix in July 2005. Battery failed after 20K miles, dealer replaced on warranty. Interior plastic features delaminating if grabbed by hands. Tires (terrible continental) replaced after 15K miles. Cruise control failed after 17K miles. Mileage is not meeting specs criteria? Vehicle garaged, currently Jan 09 24K miles. Summary: very poor quality vehicle. I had 1999 Ford F150 pick-up never a problem. In 10 yrs not even light bulb failed @150.

Very versatile car. Great ride. Range is a bit on the low side. Has enough power for city driving and merging with traffic. Have yet to take it on a long roadtrip with a load of luggage, kids, bikes on the back, and the A/C running while that 18 wheeler is running up behind me...

Since the day I bought this car it has been a pleasure and from now on I will only purchase a Toyota. There is a ton of room for cargo when you fold down the rear seats. The tie down features of the cargo area insures that nothing will be moving while you are driving. The operation controls are all easily reached and with the automated features you do not even have to remember to turn on or off your headlights. I think that the Matrix is a good mix of styling and functionality.

My wife and I have done a LOT of research before purchasing this vehicle. We were sold on Toyota by the fact that her '97 Tercel has had no problems and just reached 90k miles. Their vehicles are just exceptional. This car is not the fastest on the road, but it is plenty fast. No other car on the market offers the versatility, performance, luxury, and low price.
