I have been reviewing the Land Cruiser for years because I have owned several dating back to the 1980s. They have changed over the years. They did not get better mechanically, but luxuriously. I believe they have been the best commercially produced vehicle on the market and remain so to this day. Why you ask. Most dependable. Ask any owner, not just me, they run forever, almost never break down. In fact, the 5 I have owned never failed to proceed as my English friend would say. On some, I have put on as many as 300,000 miles and the vehicle is still going strong. In any weather condition, I wouldn't want any other vehicle. Flood, snow, high wind, mud, heat, cold. The traction is exceptional. It has the weight to keep you on the road. I have never been in a vehicle with better AC and I have been in vehicles that cost over $250.000.... not better maybe not even as good. Don't believe me... go to Florida or Texas in the summer ... rent the best Detroit has to offer ... then a Land Cruiser. You will find out in a hurry which is best. Go to Montana in the winter ... try all the all-wheel SUV's and you will discover very quickly the Land Cruiser beats them all HANDS DOWN. No, I don't own thousands of shares of stock in Toyota .... I own a Land Cruisers .... period.

After serving in the first Gulf War, and seeing 80 series LC everywhere overseas, I’ve wanted to own a Land Cruiser. Ubiquitous in remote and rugged underdeveloped countries, I loved the idea of a truly off-road reliable vehicle. I finally decided to get one. Price was good $8,000 off the MSRP on a new one. I had to ask myself: do I need this? No, but it sure is fun and I love it more everyday! Drives great, handles better than you'd expect. Comfortable and unmatched off-road as an unmodified vehicle. And it's solid as a rock! After much research I’ve found it is over-engineered to last in these rugged, remote areas. Most vehicles are designed for a 10 year life cycle, the Land Cruiser is reportedly designed for a 25 year cycle. And, with only ~3000 sold in the USA annually they hold their value well. Now discontinued in the U.S. and rumoured to be arriving 2024 in a twin-turbo form, I am glad I have a reliable, less complex but powerful V-8. Update: looks like Toyota will stop importing the (large) Land Cruiser after 2021. The 300 series will appear only in Lexus form—Toyota gets the smaller version overseas known as the Prado. I will be hanging on to my rock-solid, bullet-proof Toyota! And, after almost six years, it continues to perform flawlessly. 2023 update: no issues. Solid as a bank vault. But, with the crazy prices in the used car market all Land Cruiser prices are going crazy. I see low mileage examples like mine going for $30,000 more than I paid. Crazy! I should sell but it can’t be replaced!!

2021 Toyota Land Cruiser Heritage Edition

The Toyota Land Cruiser (LC) is a legendary vehicle that, worldwide, is synonymous with rugged go-anywhere dependability. In the United States, the current (and ending) 200 series has evolved into a hybrid luxury / highly capable off roader, but that puts it in rarified air with very few legitimate competitors. A common complaint with the LC is the price, but if you look beyond the badge, the LC is (arguably) entirely worth the asking price. It's 100% built in Japan from Japanese components in a factory dedicated to it and it's corporate sibling, the Lexus LX 570. The ladder-style truck-like frame is adopted from the Tundra but is 20% stronger (as well as shorter). The mechanical components are, across the board, heavy duty and overbuilt. Sources online - not verified with any statement from Toyota itself that I've found, but still commonly stated - say the LC has been engineered and built with a 25 year lifespan, with extra levels of testing conducted in extreme environments so it will survive in the rigors of the Middle East and the Australian Outback. It comes complete with a full time 4 wheel drive system with a 4 wheel low selector, off road driving modes (only available in 4L), crawl control (also 4L), and a fancy turning radius reducing system (only 4L again) that locks up the rear inside tire to give you tighter turns on tricky trails. It's also plush and comfortable inside. The interior is quiet. The materials quality is high. The heated and ventilated seats - and your mileage may vary here, because everyone is different with seats, as I am literally painfully aware - are plush, offering support without being overly firm as some other Toyota vehicles are (leather seated 4Runners, most Tundras - looking at you). There are forward-, side- and backup-cameras, a 360 degree view, parking sensors, radar cruise control, blind spot and rear cross traffic monitoring, navigation, and an excellent sound system (I'm super critical with sound, e.g. I was disappointed by the 4Runner TRD Pro's JBL system, but this JBL Synthesis system is excellent). There's 4-zone climate control, with controls for the second row passengers, and a heated steering wheel. LED lights including fog lights; even auto windshield wipers. So yes, it's expensive, but you are getting a lot of vehicle for the money, and it is among the most reliable vehicles on the road. Drawbacks? The most glaring is the gas mileage, which is atrocious and at the level of my old GMC 2500 HD pickup, but with only 24.6 gallons in the tank. I wish fervently the LC had the Tundra's 38 gallon tank, which would go a long, long way to alleviating range anxiety. This is a very heavy vehicle, and the 5.7L V8 - while so, so thirsty, on the order of averaging 12 mpg in mostly city driving - gets the LC moving smoothly and confidently when you need it to scoot, with lots of low end torque for going off road. To be the perfect overlanding vehicle, you really need more fuel. I get anxious just thinking about not being able to make it more than 250 miles if I'm way out in the mountains without running out of gas. The Yakima roof rack on the Heritage edition is a nice to have and looks awesome (better than without it), but it adds 6 1/2 inches to the LC's 74 in stock height - so parking garages need extra care - and acts like a wind sail, hurting gas mileage even more and producing wind noise above ~40 mph that's glaring in the otherwise serene LC interior. Thankfully it's easy to remove (I removed it alone) and appears you can pop off the front panel to let air flow through. The stock Dunlops are both A) expensive ($308/tire (!) online) and B) next to useless off road. I replaced them in the first week (I wanted KO2s, but the dealership I had an agreement with when I bought the LC could only get me Nitto Terra Grappler G2s, which I went for, and they've been good so far - as quiet as the stock tires but radically better off road and in the snow). The Heritage edition I purchased is the two row, which includes a tonneau cover and more room in the back (yes!) as well as attractive bronze wheels and contrast stitching (double yes!) but does away with the cooler in the center console (...might've been nice...). The media center is old. The graphics are blocky, though at 9in it's fine on the eyes and the UI is pleasant enough to use and just works. No Apple Carplay or Android Auto here. Regular old bluetooth has worked fine. The wireless QI charger is drip-drip slow, but that could be my phone's case. Finally, yes, this is a very expensive vehicle. It's Mercedes, Porsche, Lincoln/Caddie/BMW/Audi/Volvo level without the badge. Personally, that suits me. I prefer people who aren't in the know not knowing, and don't *want* the three-point star on my car. I didn't buy the LC to show off. I bought it to be comfortable with the peace of mind knowing I can drive across that mountain in the distance and it'll last my family the next 10 to 15 years without problems.

We just picked up our second LC, and I'd love to tell you why. Compared to the other vehicles my spouse and I have owned (MB, Infiniti, Audi, BMW, Porsche, and other Toyota's) the LC is still our favorite. The first one we bought was a 100 series, and it was amazing to drive. It was everything you'd expect from and LC. Smooth, easy to drive, spacious with unmatched reliability. When we finally sold it the vehicle had around 150,000 miles on it, and it felt like it was just breaking in. This new LC HE we just bought reminds us so much of why we loved the first one, as well as why we were very happy to buy the exact model of a car we owned in the past for the very first time. With the updated interior and exterior, the LC feels very much so more modernized while still being the SUV we feel in love with years ago. Don't get me wrong, as it's not as smooth or polished to drive as the MB. It's not nearly as fast as the BMW. It's clearly not as exciting to drive as the Porsche, but that's not the point of the LC. The LC gives you a VERY high-end driving experience that will remain the same enjoyable and dependable ride for 300,000+ miles. None of our others cars could ever come close to that except of course for the other LC. It's reliability is truly unmatched in the industry as the car is so over engineered (hence the $$$), and it was done so deliberately. The LC is not a perfect vehicle as the gas mileage alone will keep you working until your late 70's, but it's nice to know when you drive to the store your 20 year old plus SUV will get you there in understated and reliable style.

we bought an LC after seeing all the problems and costs associated with other SUV’s. We also considered that we might “never sell” and drive it until it stops running. While we regularly service the car, literally thats all we do. Gas milage not great, but we burn maybe 1000 gallons/yr, so more efficent but same sized SUVs might save 2-300 gallons, at best. One major repair soaks up any of that savings. The ride is comfortable and powerful, the trim sturdy. We like things simple and reliable, and the LC fits that to a T. Everyone complains about the rear seats folding up, but we like the ease of use and we still hauled two kids to sleep away camp, trucks/duffels and all. We have almost 150k miles and except for some minor wear, it feels and looks “lightly driven”. We might keep it and see if we can get 500k miles out of her, but the new ones certainly look good!

Always owned Range Rovers prior to 2013 .I test drove every high end SUV on the market .It came down to Mercedes ,Lexus or Land Cruiser .Surprisingly The Land Cruiser won as I never dreamed of owning a Toyota .The Lexus version did not add enough value and the finish and quality of the Landcruiser is way better than Mercedes .I use it for long distance trips for which it perfect .Quiet ,spacious ,comfortable and a dream to drive .In 60,000 miles and 6 years not the smallest issue has arisen unlike my experiences with Range Rover and Mercedes .I can see using this car for another 5 years at least .

My First Land Cruiser & I love it

This is my first Land Cruiser and I love it. It commands the road and is a comfortable ride. I love that I am riding around in $90k car and most have no clue. Until you see a fellow LC rolling down the street. Obviously fuel economy could be better, but you get what you get and you don't throw a fit. Better than a turbo 6. I can't wait for the zombie apocalypse to come!

This truck isn't fancy, it isn't going to have the latest tech, but it will out last any truck out on the rode in comfort. Purchased this new truck after 2 years of research on the SUV market. Looked at the Audi Q7, Volvo XC90, Range Rover, Mercedes GL, Infiniti QX, and others. Great tech in the Audi but all data on reliability and the data was was limited to 7 years. Great tech in the Volvo XC90 but when you think of a 4 cylinder with a turbo charger and supercharger it is still a 4 cylinder engine pushing out that power and the strain it puts on the components is high. Range Rover also beautiful and technologically advanced but I own a Jaguar already and don't need 2 high maintenance vehicles (don't get me wrong I like the smooth V8 but I keep my trucks a long time). I had a 1999 Isuzu Trooper and it finally gave out after 18 years. The Toyota Land Cruiser delivers smooth power quietly and the ride absorbs the bumps without jarring occupants, but keep in mind it is a truck. Cabin is well insulated and keeps out the noise. The fuel efficiency is less than desireable, recent 1200 mile road road trip I averaged 17.5 mpg (I-5 through northern CA). In the city if I adjust my driving style can get 13.5 MPG. Only maintenance I have had done is get the windshield replaced, on the road trip got a rock chip. I have $0 deductible (lucky I switched), OEM glass is $900 and install another $200-300. Then you have to get the sensors and cameras calibrated at the dealership which is another $130-180. I have had OEE (Original equipment equivalent) glass and always could see imperfections, also with the tech I wouldn't go with anything but OEM glass. Update 5/22/2018: This truck has been a joy for our camping and snow adventures! On one of our camping trips I was coming down a hill and got the rear bumper snagged on a tree stump. Popped the rear bumper cover off. I was able to get it snapped back into place but it left a crack on the bottom. It was a steep descent and I knew the stump was there but didn’t realize how soft the dirt was. Estimate to replace is about $1100. Also have upgraded the tires to BFG TAKO2 and increased the size to 32.5” and don’t have any rubbing. Noticed some rough shifting when coasting to a stop and then starting to accelerate the shift is jerky at times. Brought it to the dealership hoping for a fix but they said there wasn’t one. I referred to a TSB and they said they would try to apply it but had to do a drive with the tech. They applied it and it put it back into learning mode and it seemed smoother but once it learned seemed to revert back but to a similar behavior but not as severe. Future plans are to upgrade the suspension next to OME-BP51’s but the OEM ride is supple and handles good for a truck of this size. No rattles or annoying squeaks.

I test drove the 2019 Land Cuiser and loved the ride, comfort, roominess, handling and power for such a large SUV but decided not to buy as it lacked some important features which I needed and should have been included in an $86K vehicle. it had only one USB port, no Apple Car Play, no power and removable 3rd row folding seats, fuel mileage was unacceptable, no upgrrades or additions from the prior model year, and eliminated the rear entertainment DVD system which was a standard feature without a corresponding reducition in the MSRP.

this is my 3rd land cruiser, They are built to last for 20 plus years. 100 percent made in japan. fit and finish supercedes any thing the germans make in an suv. resale far better then the junk made in america. I'm a car nut and have also owned 3 ford raptors. as well as range rovers, glandewagons, bmw suv, broncos, explorers, gmc., and jeeps. i can tell you that after 3 years the suvs wc i mentioned all show their age big time. junk is junk, w terrible resale value and saggy cheap engineering. the land cruiser and 4 runner trd pro, wc i own both are understated, but built to last forever. also both have great resale value. I can't explain, but the 2 vehicles i just mentioned are 100 percent made in japan and the way its put together rivals any other SUV WC I PREVIOUSLY MENTIONED. junk is junk. the land cruiser and forerunner you spend a dollar and get back a dollar. w the rest of the crap, you spend a dollar and get back 20 cents worth of value.

If you're willing to commit the money and deal with mileage same as a Tundra, this is one fine ride for northern climates. Driving on winter condition roads is a dream . I've driven Toyota trucks since 1997. All have been very reliable, solid vehicles. The Land Cruiser is a cut above without question.

My comment is in response to CS's above regarding the claim that Land Cruisers are built for a 25-year life cycle. I'd not heard that but definitely believe it. Mine has 300,000 miles on it and turns 22 next month! I still love it; smooth, comfortable ride. It's been the best (and most reliable) vehicle this family has ever owned, bar none. So despite the "cons" about lack of bells and whistles and tech for the price, I would buy it again tomorrow. I didn't buy a 2019 Land Cruiser, but I'm sure I'd love it too.

Throwback that’s built to last

Luke M, 07/19/2021

Purchased because I needed a safe, reliable, all-weather capable vehicle to use for ferrying children and pets on weekends. Only had it for a couple thousand miles so far, but very pleased. Expected the abysmal fuel economy, so not worried - not using it to commute. Full tank gets right around 300 miles. Used it on a 600 mile road trip and it performed admirably. Plenty of space, solid highway cruiser and ride height gives you commanding view of the road. As described in the review, the entertainment/Nav tech is not good at all, but the adaptive cruise control is responsive and lane assist is effective. The best way I’ve heard this last US year of the LC defined is - this is a vehicle that is perfect for those who don’t want their trucks to feel like overgrown cars. If you find modern SUVs to be too soft or digital for your tastes, this rig should be on your short list of options…if you can find one. Took a while to track this one down. Which leads to a final and surprising point. The LC turns heads! I get lots of compliments. Hopefully Toyota changes it’s mind and brings them back to the US in the future.

I was on the fence between the Land-Cruiser and a Mercedes GL450. I've owned four Land-Cruiser's prior and was a bit nervous about the Mercedes reliability. As it turns out, the Land-Cruiser was a disaster! The day I drove it home, I could tell there was an alignment issue. Constant corrections needed. I took it to my local shop and they said the rear axle was off almost a full degree (It was basically twisted forward on the left and back on the right). Took to Toyota and they confirmed issue. They had it for 3 days and ended up using a "come-a-long" strap to try and force the rear axle into alignment. This crazy repair was even at Toyota Corporate's recommendation! Needless to say, it just created more problems having the axle forced into an unnatural position. My service department agreed the attempted repair should be "undone" due to the pressure being placed now on bushings, control arms, etc. After I got vehicle back, it now had even worse alignment readings due to the excessive force that was placed on rear suspension. I filled a complaint with Toyota. After a few weeks, they told me, "No further repairs are needed". My dealer was no help at all- Carson Toyota is the worst. I was furious and w/no support from Toyota or my dealer. I hated driving the vehicle because it was all over the road. I also knew the truck would also wear tires quickly. I hired an attorney and he won my case! I was awarded all my monies back. However, nobody should go through what I did for such an obvious build defect which was detected so early. Apparently, this rear axle issue is a common known problem with the Land-Cruiser and Tundras. In fact, my attorney was thinking about spearheading a national recall on this matter. BUYER BEWARE: get it on an alignment rack BEFORE you put your money down one of these!

Pros: Looks good, reliable, comfortable and durable. Rugged feel but a refined interior. Cons: Gas mileage is miserable, averaging around 12 MPG, that isn't unexpected. The worst part of the bad MPG is that they combined it with a small fuel tank. This equates to filling up every 3-4 days. If you are over 6' 1" you will have to do a squat to get in or you will bump your head. The controls are also set up for a right hand drive vehicle. For example, when you press the seek button to scroll through presets, going to the right takes you from preset 5 to 4 instead of to 6....smh! The moonroof has 2 switches the one closest to the driver tilts and the button further away is to open!!! My conclusion on the SUV is that it is truly a niche vehicle but it is nowhere near an every day truck.

This car is the toughest vehicle I have ever owned. Power is staggering and road noise is non existent. It is a pleasure to drive for extended periods. The construction quality is outstanding. I have had none of the usual new car "adjustments" that dealers often must make. If it got better mileage it would be the perfect SUV.

Wish all vehicles were as solid and dependable as my Landcruiser.

This is by far the best SUV I’ve ever owned. I’ve got about 22,000 miles on it and I love it. I expect to get easily 200,000 miles out of this LC. 12/5/2022 - 35k miles -still the best vehicle I have ever owned..

Land Cruiser #6

Generally speaking those who own or want to own a land cruiser understand what they are, reliable and timeless. My 2018 is my 6th since my 2000. I still own a '15 as well and use primarily at my country place in upstate NY where a set of K02 diggers tackles the heaviest snowfalls Mother Nature can dish out. What they aren't is sexy and cutting edge (aka "unproven technology") What they are is all you may ever need in a do everything and go anywhere vehicle that will deliver many many years of reliable service.

The only problem this suv have is the bad leather on the steering wheel. Its falling apart. Otherwise this is the best vehicle i have ever earned. Nothing goes wrong with it. It doesn’t break down at all. Suspension is bullet proof. Nice and sturdy and doesn't go out of alignment that easily. My whole family loves it. It’s like a simple beautiful woman who doesn’t cheat on you. Absolutely love it. Very sturdy like Mercedes big suv’s that doesn’t break down on you and cost you arms and legs.

Just test drove a 2019 Land Cruiser. I purchased a 1999 used Land Cruiser in 2000. It has been my most reliable vehicle. I've heard cars are the worst investments. Not true of the Land Cruiser. The newer versions aren't "fancy" with bells and whistles like Apple Play etc. But the vehicles are flat out RELIABLE! My 20 year old vehicle costs me oil changes, brakes every few years, tires every few years....and that's it!!! My mechanic has told me several times, this is one of the best engines Toyota made so it will last forever. The vehicle still looks good, runs very well and is comfortable. I've had other vehicles over the years (German and American), and yet the only vehicle that remains is my Land Cruiser. I'm thinking of upgrading to a newer version (2019), but since absolutely nothing is wrong with my 1999, it's hard to pull the trigger for a new one. You will not be disappointed with the quality, handling, longevity and reliability of this vehicle. She will NOT get stuck in snow even if you tried. Amazing. I'm at 255,000 miles....original everything (except routine battery, brake pads, rotors, tires). Maybe at 300,000 miles, I'll finally upgrade to a newer Land Cruiser. She needs to be in a Toyota commercial. Test driving the 2019 I realized the quality is still there, the handling is still great and it felt overall like a great vehicle.

It just feels different, and it’s easy to see why it hasn’t changed much for over a generation. The engineers got it thoughtfully right and it does what it’s designed to do…brilliantly. The refinements are evident and the shortcomings forgivable. Love the heft, the heritage, the drive, the manners, the personality and it’s willingness. This truck truly is over engineered and may last decades in our family.
