We bought it new and have 148,000 miles on it. The engine is still silent and the transmission runs like new. I'm not kidding. I have replaced some mechanical things due to wear but you have to expect this. I'm only on my 3rd set of tires in 10 years. If you're looking for a large suv forget mercedes and bmw and ford and cadilac and lincoln. The build quality on this thing puts them all to shame.

The Land Cruiser was built to have a 25 year service life, as opposed to the 10 year plan most auto manufacturers make for their cars. The craftsmanship and durability of this SUV still shine 25 years after this one rolled off the production line. The only drawbacks, mostly because I live in a northern state with lots of salt in the winter, are the rust around the wheel wells, rust above the windshield, and the exhaust will inevitably rust out as well. If you can get past these things, you will have a vehicle that, with regular maintenance, will last over 300,000 miles EASILY! The years 1998-1999 have locking center and rear differentials, which I prefer. Maintenance I've had to do over past 10 years: Exhaust/Catalytic Conv. ($500 on rock auto) Alternator, Wheel bearing, Ball joints, Control arm bushings, u-joints and driveshaft balance, spark plugs, timing belt/water pump, power steering reservoir, brakes twice, rear hatch handle. Besides rust she drives like new. Update as of 2022 still going and is my hunting camping truck. Sat for a few months and the sunroof cables froze up. Will drop the headliner to fix those over the winter. No longer pretty, but no longer matters. Paid $10k in 2012, so 10+ years later and still worth about $5k. Not bad when compared to new car depreciation. Bought a rust free 2000 LX 470 for $2500 last year to mess around with, and wife drives a 2007 LX 470. Testament to my trust in these vehicles.

I just bought this truck used and I am very impressed. Driving it feels like a dream and the quality is exceptional. I can't get my wife to let me drive it though - she and kids are sold.
