High Five to the Highlander
Excellent purchase. Handles like a van, not like a truck, and similar to a sedan. The leather and interior is excellent. Kids love it.

Comfort to travel in
This is my second Highlander. Love it, rides smooth, comfortable seats, roomy. Miss my 4 cup holders being now I’ve got only 2 but love the long shelf to put phone with charger opening so cord not in my view and each place for sunglasses. Powerful when needed. Wish gas mileage was a little better. 5 years later still love it!

Initial Impressions (updated)- 2016 Highlander
Our two previous vehicles were both Toyota Venzas (2009 and 2015). Both of those cars were ideal for the way we use a car. But, Venza left the US market in 2015. So, when we were ready to upgrade our vehicle again a few weeks ago we looked toward higher ground - aka Highlander! This is a two week initial impression review. So far I would say the HL is more of everything we liked about the Venza. More interior room, more flexibility in seating options with the folding third row, more visibility on the road with taller ride height and more buttery smoothness in the ride quality that I attribute to longer wheelbase, smaller wheel size (18 vs 20) and more vehicle weight. Some of the things that are carryovers from the Venza (thankfully) are the engine and transmission. The 3.5 V6 has been a Toyota mainstay for years and runs great in my experience. The six speed AT shifts fine in this application and presents no issues. One minor complaint is the lack of two-person memory seating and mirror positioning on the Highlander XLE trim. Our last Venza was an XLE and had that feature. I’ll admit we were spoiled to that luxury when my wife and I would switch driving duties. We bought this 2016 as a used vehicle with less than 18,000 miles on a four year old car! It’s literally indistinguishable from a new one both inside and out and for much much cheaper than a new one. Look forward to updating the review as we continue our Highlander experience. UPDATE: 2022/02 We’ve now owned the Highlander two years and have added about 28,000 miles to the odometer. Everything from my initial review still holds. My wife said recently, “This is the best vehicle we ever bought!” I do my own oil changes at 5,000 mile intervals. The OEM tires were replaced at 40,000 miles. This has proven to be a great highway car. Very quiet, comfortable and zero quality or service issues.
