Cabin boom is real

Before purchasing a Grand Highlander, be sure to google "grand highlander cabin boom". This is an engineering defect (Toyota calls it a "characteristic") that results in a low frequency booming noise in your ears as you drive at low speeds. Similar to when one back window is open, but not exactly. It's worse. Like being inside a drum. Based on the posts on Reddit, cabin boom does not affect all GHs, and it's not limited to just a certain model or trim. So before purchasing you need to test drive like crazy the exact car you plan to take home. Test drive it on local roads going less than 20 - 25 mph. Unfortunately we didn't know about this problem until after purchase. Even though we reported the problem within hours, and took the car back to the dealership, and said we didn't want the car due to this issue, they only offered to buy the car back with depreciation. Buy with caution.

Great try but Toyota ruins it with random ware

So, have been enjoying my grand Highlander platinum until yesterday. Toyota apparently sets up its”connect” technology to convert to a no option monthly pay system. Suddenly no gps access or other technology except a screen takeover saying convert to a pay system. Minimum monthly charge of $15 or all you get is radio. Leave it to Toyota to screw the customer and not care a bit. If only the dealership had informed us we could have shopped elsewhere.

Don’t Do It!

In March 2024, we purchased our GH Platinum. I should mention we currently have a 2017 and 2018 Highlander (we bought them new) that have NEVER had issues. Each of them has over 100K miles and we’ve only had to do routine maintenance. This GH has been a nightmare after 20K miles. To mention a few of the issues: squeaky brakes, car shakes starting at 78mph, the trunk net latch broke, the transmission makes a whirring noise and sounds like a plane landing, Apple CarPlay works/connects about half the time, VERY loud wind noise/whistling from the front passenger side and the driver side mirror clicks when it turns inward. The dealership is simply awful and told me that Toyota is aware of the wind noise issue but they don’t have a fix, so I have to deal with it. They claim not to hear the brakes or transmission. It’s infuriating that we paid more for the GH than any vehicle we’ve ever purchased and it is a piece of junk. We have always been devoted Toyota owners, but this has been the most disappointing car purchase in my life. I’ll be taking my GH to a different dealership with the hope some of these issues can be resolved. Do yourself a favor and don’t buy the GH.

Best Vehicle I've Ever Owned!

I came from four straight Highlanders and like the Grand Highlander much more. It is the best vehicle I've ever owned. It is also my wife's favorite vehicle she has driven. I am very happy with the purchase a year and a half ago and have not had one problem. I would absolutely buy again.

Great mileage, soft rear suspension

My Grand Highlander has a standard hybrid power train. While it delivers pretty amazing mpg, especially at lower elevations and high temperatures, it is somewhat tiresome to drive. I drive long distances with little stopping time, so am always aware of how tired I am upon arrival. I went from a 2015 Toyota Avalon to the Grand Highlander, so I know not to expect the same stick to the road handling. The rear suspension seems way too soft for a vehicle of this size and weight. It gives you a feeling of tail wagging the dog as you go swaying down the interstate. Between that and the annoying tech features like lane correction, and adaptive cruise, you feel like you are constantly jerking and weaving down the road. The annoying tech seems to turn the features back on by themselves even after I repeatedly turn them off. Must be every time they update the software. I miss the plain simple design of Toyotas long standing cruise control also. I changed my tires out for ones with a stiffer sidewalk which was a tiny improvement on the swaying of the rear. I hope they come out with some kind of a stabilizer bar for the rear of this vehicle soon. Compared to the way a standard Highlander handles the road, Toyota might have been a little quick with this design and overlooked some of the problems with handling. If you are driving at night and see something in the road that you have to dodge quickly because the vehicles cameras do not see it, you have to fight the lane correction feature. Otherwise than these handling issues it is a good car.
