My wife & I bought the Echo new in '01. My ego had inhibitions, but it was for her & I respected Toyota quality. I inherited a '97 Grand Prix GT. Although the Echo is a bit under-powered for my taste, I'd drive it over any car I've had. It's functional, fun & easy to drive, capable & economical. Edmunds latest review wasn't useful. It seemed they were evaluating it on standards it wasn't built for. If you want a gas- guzzling, gangly, glorified minivan (refering to SUV's), you won't be interested in a small car. We love it (including our 8-week old whose car seat fits great). And the crash test results Edmonds was so worried about later received 4 of 5 stars.

Canadian Toyota Echo 5-DR Hatchback 2004

I saw it few year ago in Japan & was suprised that Toyota decided to bring it to Canada, but not to the US (sorry my American friends, so you know how I feel about the MR2 Spyder). I bought it mainly because it is a unique car (I live along the US/Canadian border). Handling & power are actually quite acceptable. With saving from its fuel economy, it won't be long till I can afford an American unique MR2 Spyder.

I commute 110 miloes a day and love my car. Gage placement takes a little getting used to but is really much better since nothing is ever blocking your viw of the gages

low TCO / reliable transporter

I wanted a reliable car. Toyota has the "bullet proof" rep for quality - and Consumer Reports gave the Echo the highest quality rating of the low-end compact sedans. I am very pleased with the gas mileage - better than Kia, Hyundai, or Chevy Aveo - and I've really appreciated that with gas prices being so high this summer. I really don't car about styling, acceleration, handling - it's a good little car to get me to work. I don't want to spend time haggling with auto mechanics trying to rip me off and I think the Echo has the built-in quality to stay out of the shop.

We have over 100,000 miles on our Echo and still have the same spark plugs, coolant, battery, clutch...everything except 2 sets of tires and 1 set of brakes. Never had a minutes trouble out of this car, it still drives as well as the day we boughht it new and the fuel economy is awesome. We will definitely by another Echo in 2 years. YOU CANNOT GO WRONG WITH THIS CAR!
