Great at some things, bad at others

Pros - feels like a tank, build quality is superb, tall seating position, lots of interior room, apple car play makes the otherwise dated tech livable day-to-day Cons - lots of wind and engine noise above 70mph, while the engine feels adequate around town, seems to work extra hard above 70mph and with any sort of grade, 15mpg around town. I'd recommend the 4runner if you plan to spend a meaningful amount of time off-road. If not, what makes the 4runner great will be outweighed by the areas where it underperforms - old tech, not enough power for highway speeds up any sort of hill, and pretty embarrassing fuel economy. I ended up selling mine after only 5 months and a road trip where I had to reduce my speed to under 70mph to reduce the wind/engine noise to make a conference call.

What’s up with the negative reviews for this year?

I don’t understand all of the negative reviews for the MY2021 versus prior years; little things like needing a screwdriver for the spare tire winder(which all years need) and paint chips. C’mon people. This year is just as good as any of the others along with the fact that every trim gets LED headlights. What’s not to like? The main thing I’ll mention for ALL years of the fifth gen T4R is it’s inability to efficiently make tall drivers comfortable. At 6’2 I’d have to concede that the big three have ergonomics for tall drivers down the best but that didn’t stop me from trading one in to own the absolute best vehicle on the market in 2022…

As expected & no surprise

I knew exactly what I was getting. Bought with 30k miles (former rental) baseline SR5 AWD with maintenance record. So far I drove 8k miles in 7 months and I’m happy with my choice. It’s a solid old school body on frame SUV. 2021 model has some modern-ish tech, which I didn’t really care too much. Toyota and most Japanese car companies are all behind on infotainment so don’t expect much. As far as driving, it’s a truck. It rolls and nose dives. That’s expected. It’s a big box sitting high with 12 years old engine with 5 speed transmission, it’s naturally thirsty. I have punched 22.1mpg on Highway but normally I get below 20mpg on daily drive. It really shines driving off-road and that’s the big selling point of this truck. We don’t have huge boulders or Forrest here, instead we just have muddy pit l, beach, and swap but it does really well with just some aggressive tires (if I were living in mountain or desert I would have spent another $4k to get a TRD) I’ve read lots of poor ratings from professional magazines and even disappointed owners, (any given time most dealership has one or two 4runner with low miles), but all those negative reviews could be avoided if they understood that this is an early 2000 technology truck. It will likely be around for good 10 more years because it’s simple, reliable, well built, and matainainable ride. If you just want an aggressive looking mall crowler then just buy any crossovers in the market and you will be happier. Because it met my expectations I am happy owner (& I choose this truck before everyone will be forced to drive EV…)

Good SUV but the old models are more reliable and

When you drive a 2021 and the old 2015 ( SR5) the 2015 is more reliable and more stedy on the road. The radio system and Navigation in the 2015 much much better. My concerns is the brake pipes going to the rear wheels are very low and not safe they are exposed and anything can damage these pipes and will be a safety issue when driving specialy off road The head lights half LED (good) half regular yellow ( high) bad. The rest are good till now
