The 2022 Tesla Model 3 delivers an overall enjoyable driving experience. It's nimble and quick, and its minimalistic interior design looks modern and upscale. Plenty of range and ease-of-charging are also high points. Build quality can be a bit of a dice roll, but ultimately there's a lot of upside to the Model 3 for the price.

2022 Tesla Model 3 Review
Pros
- Excellent range, performance and handling
- Comfortable seating and lots of interior room
- Access to Tesla's prolific Supercharger fast-charging stations
Cons
- Touchscreen interface can lead to driver distraction
- No Android Auto or Apple CarPlay support
What's new
- 12-volt lithium-ion battery instead of the previous lead-acid battery
- Sound-reducing rear windows
- Quicker processor for the infotainment system
- Part of the first Model 3 generation introduced for 2017
Overview

The 2022 Tesla Model 3 is the smallest and most affordable offering from the California-based all-electric automaker. After making a number of updates for 2021 that included an upgraded interior, increased range on a full charge, and additional standard features, Tesla is keeping things pretty much the same for the 2022 Model 3. There are a few minor upgrades, such as a quicker processor for the infotainment system, but overall the Model 3's key attributes continue to be its excellent range, strong performance, and comfortable and spacious interior.

Tesla isn't the only automaker offering compelling electric cars these days, however. The Ford Mustang Mach-E stands out with its sporty performance and useful cargo area, while the all-new BMW i4 is a proper luxury sport sedan that just happens to be an EV. That said, Tesla's early start has given the company a boost when it comes to the entire package. The Model 3 is still a hugely compelling sedan, and despite some of our frustrations with less-than-advertised range and cumbersome tech, it's well worth a look if you're in the market for an electric vehicle. Check out our test team's Expert Rating for our in-depth evaluation of the Model 3's performance, range and more.
What's it like to live with?
Edmunds bought a 2017 Tesla Model 3 Long Range not long after it originally went on sale, keeping it for nearly two years and about 24,000 miles. Our car was an early model, so we had a few hiccups during our test, but many of them have since been addressed. Check out our 2017 Tesla Model 3 Long Range coverage to learn more about what Model 3 ownership is all about.

Good
8.0
out of 10
We drove the 2022 Tesla Model 3 on our test track and on real roads. Our Edmunds team conducts rigorous independent vehicle testing, driving 500,000 miles a year.
Performance
8.5/10
How does the Model 3 drive? The Model 3 feels sporty and engaging thanks to strong off-the-line performance, intuitive and responsive steering, and coordinated and nimble handling. The straight-line thrust we admired in the early Long Range models can still be found in the base model trim. In Edmunds' testing, the Model 3 Standard Range Plus accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in 5.3 seconds. That's impressive for an EV with a single electric motor. The higher-end Long Range and Performance models are in another league of "quick."
The standard 18-inch all-season tires aren't the grippiest, but they offer sufficient stick to live up to most of the spirited driving you'll be doing on the street. True high-performance driving, however, is limited by the heavy-handed stability control. Still, this Tesla delivers a laudable driving experience in the EV segment.

Comfort
8/10
How comfortable is the Model 3? We found the Model 3 to be a relatively pleasant place to sit, and that feeling held up for hours at a time. Our one gripe involves the non-perforated leather seats — they don't breathe all that well if you're in a warmer climate. Otherwise, the seats are cushy and provide nice support.
You have to adjust the climate controls through the touchscreen. You even direct air flow from the vents by way of the screen. It's a neat idea in theory, but we've found it's distracting to do while driving. The cabin is quiet and keeps wind, electric propulsion and most road noise at bay. Ride comfort is agreeable most of the time, but it can sometimes feel overly busy if the road surface is broken or uneven.

Interior
8/10
How’s the interior? The Model 3's controversial interior design looks modern and cutting-edge. The driving position is highly adjustable and feels great, and the cabin is surprisingly roomy thanks to its minimalistic approach and all-glass roof. Forward visibility is also fantastic thanks to the low hoodline.
The large 15-inch touchscreen is the control center for everything. While it doesn't block your view, it commands a lot of your attention for too many routine tasks — such as adjusting the mirrors or turning on your windshield wipers — that should be doable without looking.

Technology
7/10
How’s the tech? The Model 3 navigation display is impressive because of its size, and it's one of the few that pulls Google Maps data in real time. That sometimes means spotty information in areas with poor reception, but otherwise the interface is easy to use. The Autopilot traffic-aware cruise and lane management system is one of the better systems out there, and cruise control will even slow for approaching curves (though sometimes a bit too conservatively).
The Model 3's lack of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto puts it at a disadvantage compared to many competitors. Bluetooth is the only way to bring your smartphone into the audio environment, which is not always as stable as being connected via USB. You can, however, stream content (usually only when parked) from places such as Hulu, Netflix, Spotify and YouTube directly to the infotainment system.

Storage
8/10
How’s the storage? The Model 3's trunk can hold far more than you'd expect thanks to a broad pass-through and SUV-like fold-flat rear seats. The trunk's stated capacity (12.3 cubic feet) isn't that impressive especially compared to the space in other mainstream electric vehicles, but we were surprised by what it could fit &mdash an extra-large mountain bike, for example. The Model 3 is also one of the few vehicles in the segment with a front trunk, providing a useful 2.7 cubic feet.
Inside, cabin storage is pretty decent. However, the front cupholders lack anti-tip tabs, so cups and bottles aren't likely to fit snugly. The car seat anchors are tucked tightly between the seat cushions, so you must take care to avoid scratching the leather as you hook up. Once in, even rear-facing car seats will fit behind an average-size driver.

Range and Efficiency
8/10
How are the range and efficiency? [Editor's note: The following relates to the 2020 Model 3 Standard Range Plus, which is what we tested. EPA range and efficiency estimates have changed slightly since then, but our general takeaways still apply.] The Model 3's EPA-estimated efficiency is great, especially for its performance output. The Standard Range Plus' EPA combined rating of 24 kWh used per 100 miles bests the ratings of most other EVs. The Model 3's EPA range is also pretty good at 250 miles for the Standard Range Plus, though we failed to hit this target in our real-world testing.
In Edmunds' real-world range test, the Model 3 went 232 miles before needing to be recharged, 18 miles shy of the EPA estimate. Other vehicles in the segment generally beat their range estimates in our testing. Conversely, the Model 3 was slightly more efficient than the EPA's number. We calculated an average consumption of 23 kWh/100 miles (the lower the number, the more efficient the car is). This is puzzling considering the Tesla fell short of its range target.

Value
8/10
Is the Model 3 a good value? Today's Model 3 has improved in build quality over the early-production cars, but the consistency of quality is still an issue. Costs have risen across the board and the Model 3's cost ultimately depends on your appetite for unlocking the Full Self-Driving Capability features. But show some restraint and you'll have a genuinely luxurious Model 3 for a reasonable price.
The Model 3 comes with the usual assortment of charge cord options, including a standard 120-volt household adapter, a 240-volt SAE public charge equipment adapter and a NEMA 14-50 RV park adapter. Long-distance trips are pretty easy to do thanks to Tesla's extensive nationwide network of quick-charging Supercharger stations.
The Model 3 is pretty comparable to other luxury electric vehicles in warranty coverage. But a big benefit to owning a Tesla are the periodic software upgrades and improvements beamed directly to your car over the air.

Wildcard
8.5/10
Never did we imagine a world in which we'd prefer driving an electric car to a BMW. But Tesla made that possible with the Model 3, at least in terms of comparing it against the latest BMW 3 Series. From its balanced chassis to the smooth, quiet and instantaneous electric propulsion, the Model 3 has altered our perceptions of what EV driving is all about.
While the Tesla brand still casts a glow of early-adopter cool over all its cars, the Model 3 has become a bit more vanilla over the years. The Model 3's lack of customizable options means the chances of you seeing an identical Tesla to yours on the road is pretty high. The Model 3 is definitely due for a refresh especially with the growing EV competition in the market.

2022 Tesla Model 3 trim level differences
The Tesla Model 3 is a small all-electric sedan that's available in three trim levels: base, Long Range and Performance. The trio varies by range and acceleration. Take note that Tesla offers rolling updates to its cars rather than by model year, so features and range may differ from what's shown below.
Which Model 3 trim does Edmunds recommend?
We suggest going with the Model 3 Long Range. It comes with all-wheel drive and a very healthy EPA-estimated range of 358 miles, which is more than either of the other two trims. While it's not as quick as the Performance, it's still mighty fun to drive.

I have driven the Model 3 over the last three years.
The Pros: This is my first EV and I have loved driving the vehicle: its fun, responsive and the dual motor, extended range makes highway driving a breeze. While I have the self park, summon and self drive features, I have not used them much. Charging has been fine since I have a 220V connection at home and and overnight charge gives … me a week's worth of city commuting. A few times I have used the Supercharger and it has been efficient. Software updates happen every two to three weeks which are not always trouble free, beware of some glitches that occur .
Cons: TESLA service STINKS! Do not expect any kind of help or assistance from their customer service number since no one answers the phone. When you do get a response, they insist on doing everything via the Tesla app, which in my opinion has a rating of zero. If you are selling a luxury car, at least provide a representative one can talk to! If your car has malfunction or repair issue, you cannot take it to the nearest service center since they will not see you without an appointment (again via the App)
In summary, its a good car. However, Tesla has to drop its hubris if it wants to compete in the EV marketplace. While they had a head start 5 years ago with hardly any competition, BMW, Audi, Ford and even KIA/Hundyai have fully loaded vehicles with all the whizz bang features at competitive prices (and excellent customer relations)

The best car ever. I can't be geared to tell you how happy I am with this car it does have a bit of a learning curve and if you have full self-driving you have to adjust from driving to piloting. That being said I can't understand why everybody doesn't at least have one. I use my car locally hardly ever drive it more than an hour or two away from home I leave every morning with a full … charge I do not have the advance charging system I just use the trickle charger that runs off of 110 it cost me $0.12 for every 5 mi in Florida and it charges at 5 mi per hour My daily drive is 50 miles to and from work so overnight it puts a full charge back on the car.. The fact that I never need to change oil or touch another gas pump or take time out of my day to even stop and get gas over an entire year adds up to be an amount of time I get to use elsewhere. There are so many benefits in having an EV it's hard to understand until you've actually owned one and a factor in the things that you do not have to do now.
Beyond My Expectations

2022 Tesla Model 3 4dr Sedan (electric DD)
I previously drove a 2016 Audi A6 which I absolutely love. But, I can honestly say the Tesla is the best car I have owned. Don’t get me wrong, the Audi is a magnificent vehicle but driving the Tesla is so much fun.
After driving an EV, it is hard to imagine going back to a gas propelled vehicle. The Instant power, the regenerative breaking, and the crisp handling was beyond my … expectations.
The seats are extremely comfortable and the interior provides plenty of room for a small vehicle. The technology is very easy to use and I like the one screen controls everything. The plain looking interior feels comfortable, clean and I like the minimalist styling. Although it is minimalistic, it feel luxurious.
Driving is a blast, even in the standard model the acceleration is instantaneous and quick. The handling is crisp and you feel connected to the road. The instrumentation is easy to read and the technology is intuitive which is impressive. I will admit I was not excited about the table that controls everything but I now find it very ingenious.
As I continue my ownership I will update my review if necessary.
UPDATE REVIEW
I am 5K into my ownership of my Tesla Model 3 Standard. As a realtor, I spend a lot of time behind the wheel. I will start with the Pros
PROS
This car is a blast to drive. I love the combination of comfort, sportiness, and luxury. I wasn’t sure if I would like the simplicity interior but I love it. I personally like one screen operating everything. There is a learning curve but it is pretty quick.
My last car was an Audi A6 and I enjoy driving this car more than my Audi and I loved my Audi. Handling is very crisp and you feel in total control behind the wheel. The ride isn’t as soft as many luxury cars but the combination of speed, handling, and comfort are perfect in my opinion. Acceleration is instantaneous no matter what speed your going. Not having a transmission makes for seem less acceleration.
The technology is fantastic. The controls are easy to use once you get acclimated. The sound system is exceptional even in the base trim. I did add a subwoofer in the trunk since the base model does not come with one. Movies sound like a movie theater. The cruise control is the best I have experienced and the ability to respond to voice commands is very impressive and you don’t have to “train” it to recognize your voice. The navigation system is also the best I have experienced. The range is more than adequate for my driving habits.
Cons
When I approach my vehicle I often have to turn around so the car can read my card in my wallet for it to unlock. For some reason, my phone won’t always open the doors for me. That is a bit annoying but no big deal. Every blue moon when using cruise control it disengages which is annoying It doesn’t happen often but it is something I noticed. Many have complained about the fit and finish and I have noticed a few flaws.
Overall, this is the best vehicle I have owned. I love it. Like most cars it isn’t perfect but it exceptional.
Still excellent

This is my second Tesla Model 3. They are very similar but new one has some interior upgrades. The car is very reliable and efficient. I've been in the FSD beta program for more than a year, and it's interesting seeing it improve first hand. It's not 100% there, but it beats regular non-assisted driving. Tesla has increasing competition, but no yet matches the features or range at its … price point.
