I loved this car!
We bought this car with 56,000 miles on it in 2002 and have loved it very much. It drives well in all weather, can take a beating from out rough lifestyle, and cleaned up nicely to fit in when we had go to the city. It was very reliable and was well built. We had put about 149,000 miles on it as of Jan. 2006 when it was squished on the highway. The anti-lock brakes where great because it got stopped to avoid the collision ahead (only 4 feet to spare); too bad the Dodge truck behind it could not stop that well. At the time of the accident it was running like a champ and we expected to have it for a long time to come. Hope I can find another one!
Expensive fixes!
It is a great car, but stay away from anything from the mid-west or north-east. The fuel filler neck will rot away, the tank will leak (which requires the disassembly of the whole back end to remove and replace) Stay away from automatics not reliable . The doors will rot away with the brake lines. The exhaust system is among the most costly to replace of any mass-produced vehicle(2 catalytic converters a mid-pipe resonator, and an expensive muffler. Seals and timing belt, etc. is a must after 100,000. Stay away from the 2.5 unless it already had the head gasket replaced.Th The 2.2 is the champ. I have put over $4000 in this vehicle since i bought it last year. Not an economy fix

Not a bad buy
Well, this isnt my car. Its my dads and so far the whole family is impressed with it. I am 15 years old and this car is great for learning how to drive. The car came with ABS, AWD, Dual Air Bags, and more. It drives well but it is a bit harsh on bumbs. It is very fun to drive too. It is fast compared to other station wagons in its size and it is not that big. This car also saved my life. My family was involved in a car accient and nobody got hurt. The damage wasnt that bad and so we got it repaired and my dad is still driving it
Winter beater that lasts
I bought a 14 year old Legacy wagon last year as a winter beater, which i planned to keep until upgrade to a newer and better car in the spring. One year later I'm still looking for that 'better car' but haven't found it yet. This car has taken me cross country twice in the past year, over the Rocky mountains (strangely it got better gas mileage at high elevation), and plowed effortlessly through 18 inches of snow! I had to replace a front strut assembly after the coil spring broke around 180,000 miles. It doesn't like to hold its idle speed, not sure what the problem is. And the 'check engine' light keeps popping up, common problem it seems. Otherwise it's great, best car i've ever bought!
Wallflower
A plain, unassuming car, but very reliable overall. AWD is handy, esp. in ice/snow. Disappointing gas mileage for a 4 cyl. Cup holder an abject failure. Horizontally opposed 4 (get the 2.2, not the 2.5) is dated but very reliable. (Thank you, Dr. Porsche, for the concept). Auto. trans. is a balky Borg-Warner unit. Ugh. Shades of Rambler. Car is too low slung, but corners well. I installed a cut-out switch to select FWD or AWD, which helps with fuel economy. (Why did Subaru eliminate that feature?). One of those cars which, despite its faults, grows on you, and is a worthy ride. My next car will have to compensate for the Legacy's plain vanilla persona. Perhaps a Caprice Police Interceptor?
Great Car, Affordable Maintenance
Roomy, roof rack, 20-26mpg, the last year Subaru did front-wheel drive on this model, and still it handed really well in the snow and on ice (tires make a big difference too). This model has one of the most reliable engines Subaru ever made. The L is always manual transmission. I bought this car in 2012 with 150k miles on it, sold it with near 210k miles on it. I had to replace both boots twice in the time I had it, but I drove pizza delivery with it so went over the same speed bumps and tracks many more times per day than average. I also needed to do the head gaskets once, a known Subaru gremlin, but everything else was just routine scheduled maintenance. For its age, this car handled well, was comfortable for passengers and accelerated quickly. Incredibly reliable, I would have kept it were I not ready to upgrade. I'm guessing the one I drove will run another 100k+, these things run forever if cared for. I liked this car so much I got another Subie.

Keeps on Goin...
It is a great car. I have 200,500 miles on it and it runs like brand new with some preventative maintenance. It did seem to loose some pep after about 150,000 miles, but with a good tune up, the car was fine. The car has survived through a bunch of tough winters in New York and as long as good tires are on it, it is great in the snow! There is nothing like the look on someones face when you drive by while they are digging their Ford Explorer out of a ditch in a snow storm! The body has held up great with no rust present at all. Proper maintenance is important and should let this car last for years to come!
1995 Subaru Legacy L sedan
When I bought my Legacy L FWD in 2000, it had just over 40,000 miles on it. Now it's over 90,000 and it has yet to let me down. The knock sensor has been replaced, as has the distributor cap, but those are the only services beyond an oil change it's needed. It's fun to drive, pretty fast for a heavy car with an automatic transmission, and comfortable for long drives. It's a keeper.
Subaru Country
Bought my 95 LS AWD wagon in 2007 w/ 117K. Needed a cheap car that I could carry liability only due to a DUI. This little beauty was a trade-in that I got off the back lot before it was detailed and pumped through the $$ machine they call the service department. I live in Central Oregon (Bend) home of the oldest Subaru dealer in the West (they say) Lot's of snow and mountains. I now have 189K on this 'temporary' car, 7 years later. Every so often I change the oil. Replaced alternator, battery, starter and a few light bulbs over the years. A bread truck backed into me and I now have a free car after getting a check for the damage that 'gives it character'. I do have a nice ML320, but
Best Car EVER!
I bought this car brand new in 1995. Ever since then, this car has saved my life more than once. The car was practically totalled once and yet it still drives like a brand new car with little to no rattling. The car has never let me down in any situation. I live in the Mountain area and it's nice to have a dependable car.
Oldie but goodie
My boyfriend bought me a 1995 Subaru LS AWD Sedan. I was scared at first because it's an old car (about as old as I am) but it is amazing. It has prooven me wrong! It's great in the winter (especially needed in CNY)!
My first car
I bought this car in May of this year and I already love it. I figured I would end up regretting it when all my friends have trucks and they went out into the wood wheeling, but I don't because I can get that car places they cant get their trucks. And the shame in their faces when my Subaru has to pull there Chevy 1500 with a 383 stroker out of a ditch is the best thing ever. This car surprises me everyday with the things it will do. This is the fastest quickest best sounding simple stock 4cyl I have seen. The only things I have done to it are eliminate one of the cats and put a glass pack on it to give it that Subaru boxer sound. The awd is amazing, I lovethis car.
95 Subaru Legacy L Wagon
In 6.5 years, I've only spent $450 on repairs. This wagon has gone through upstate NY winters and now deals with the Virginia summers. A solid performer if you do the recommended maintenance. Not necessarily as cool as a sedan, but the Outback's now are a good option. Buy one of these used for a decent car.
2nd Gen Legacy with a flawless repair record
I bought my Legacy L wagon (with front wheel drive only) in 1996 with 5k on the clock. Since then this amazing vehicle has 175k on the dials. I have nothing bad to say about her. Great precise handling, uber reliable, only replaced brakes, tires and NOTHING ELSE. You read that right. Nothing!

It really can go anywhere!
I have taken my legacy to some strange places... the track, the woods, and on REALLY long road trips. Plus I commute 43 miles each way to work. Spending so much time in this thing has always been a pleasure.
Super reliable
We live in Brooklyn and wanted a cheap & dependable car with AWD/ABS which was cheap to insure and wasn't on thieves' 'hot list'. A year later this little Subaru has proved to be exceptional - and 100% reliable. We make regular trips to the ski areas in VT in winter & to NC beaches in summer. And never a problem. We hit a major snowstorm near Stowe and this car plowed through 6" of fresh no problem! It handles great on the freeway and cruises wonderfully at around 70-75. Having done 80k all the struts need replacing thanks to very bad NYC roads - but suspension still ok regardless so we'll leave it. Only gripe is very poor mpg in city, yet freeway mpg is very good. Great value for 3 grand!
472000 and its still tuggin along
This is my first car I bought and I gotta admit it is pretty sweet to drive, Very reliable in the snow as some people have already said. You'd think this car with 472k km on it would run like crap but with High octane gas man this thing goes pretty good. I'd recommend this car to anyone.
95 Subaru AWD sw L
Bought this car with 130000 on it had to fix brakes and rear bearings only besides regular oil changes & routine maintenance. Handles very well and very dependable.. I highly recommend..

Love this car!
I bought my LS Wagon in '99 with about 60k miles on it. It now has about 100k, almost 3 years later. This is a great reliable car. With certain cars, like the VW's I used to own, I had to put a lot of money in by 100k miles. Not this car. Just basic maintenance- tires, brakes, oil, fuel filter. I did have the 90k mile tune up done for $800, which was worth it, cause this car runs and runs. Very roomy for 4 adults and dog. Pack it up for ski trips, handles great in snow. The ride is a little low- wonder if the Outback is better. Excellent vehicle. Obviously Subaru Legacy wagons are great cars since I see older models on the road everyday.
A solid senior citizen
Bought this Brighton in '04, with 160k miles. Now it is 2018 and it has 215k. Much of it is on rough dirt roads. But it is still a satisfying road car with AWD. The mpg was 30 when bought and has dropped to 25. Everything works. It needed a first clutch at 190k and new struts at 205k. Tires last as they should which means alignment holds on dirt/gravel roads. I have no serious complaints about this car. Fortunately I have discovered an honest local mechanic who only works on Subes. All other troubles were mostly with mechanics who were rip-offs or did not know Subarus. There is no rust and the upholstery is fine. Others have mentioned the 2.2 engine. It is the best thing about early 90s Subarus. Avoid the 2.5 in late 90s model Legacy as it has head gasket problems.

Best Damn Automobile I've Ever Owned.
Nothing is perfect in this world but I sure do love the LSi I bought about 10 years ago. I bought it at 88,000 miles as the third owner and from a friend who's father ran the local dealership in 2007, near mint and $3,500 (Yeah.) She sits at 166,625 right now and ran for at least 6 years, regular maintenance included, before requiring a major repair (See: Ball Joints and Front CV Axle, "Major"). As we speak, I am replacing the Head Gaskets, which is something any Subaru owner and mechanic can tell you is common. Honestly, some would even say unnecessary. I recall one mechanic who told me once, "If the Subaru doesn't drip oil, it's not a Subaru or you're out of oil.". But such is the life of an aluminum head automobile. I've driven through snowstorms other AWD vehicles have been trapped in. Taken her off-road for dirt-road camping, road tripped to every state surrounding, Hydroplaned and bumped the driver rear side hard enough to deform the support linkage; Had to replace the wasted tire but she never complained. Only until I replaced the rear disc pads some time later and had her up did I notice. Including the aforementioned linkage, I have since replaced the Wheel Bearings (2 bad, all of them under a "Replace one, replace the other" philosophy). A Front CV Axle, Ball Joints (under the same previous repair philosophy), water pump & timing belt. Otherwise, most every other piece of this car has been OEM, at just under 170,000 miles. Everything listed above, I did myself. Using Harbor Freight tools and a Garage with no power (or a front Lot). Extremely easy to work on and unbelievably forgiving. I will never sell this car. If you find one of these in repairable condition below 250,000 miles. You have found a treasure known only to the select few (Read: Many) who have been lucky enough to own one. Just ask the guy who I bought the car from who, to this day, laments having sold the car (of course, it was not his blood and sweat which kept it running!). Listen, she's not the sportiest and she's not the fastest. She's got 4-cylinders in an aluminum block and the engine has a buzzy hum on acceleration when you put it to the floor. But she's got getup and she's definitely got go when it gets down to it. This car endeared and sold me to the Subaru Brand.

Happy Subaru owner
I have owned this vehicle for over 9yrs, it is the most reliable vehicle that I have ever owned. I highly recommend it..
Reliable, But Not Very Sharp
I bought my Subaru in April, 2009. It's very reliable and I am able to get anywhere I want, when I want. It drives great in the snow. It's built very solid, which most cars these days are not. I would recommend this car to any new drivers. It is a really tough car!
best car EVER
I got my 95 Legacy LSi wagon in 1997 with 28k miles on him. Sadly, he was totaled while parked in Apr 2004 with 110k miles. Honestly, this is the best car ever. NC, NY, CT, CA: this car handled all weather types perfectly, and he was the King of Tahoe and San Fran. No major unscheduled repairs. The leather interior was in great shape even after 10 years. Gas mileage never went below 25 on the highway. Loved blowing by the SUVs that were stuck on the nasty Tahoe roads. My mechanic said he expected the car to last for 300k miles, and I had every intention of keeping him that long. Now I just have to decide which one of his relatives to buy next!
Suby's are the best
Had the car since 1994 and no problems. Lived in MT and Suby is the best ice car ever driven.
My Second Subaru Wagon
I've owned 2 Subaru Wagons for 18 years. I've found them to be reliable & easy to handle, especially the range of the steering wheel. The cargo area is quite attractive with the cover to conceal all items. I have always maintained my vehicles be- cause I dread having my car break down in the middle of nowhere. I also have a complete record of all maintenance & repairs to this vehicle for anyone to peruse. My most recent maintenance included brake work and oil change. The tires are in good condition & are con- stantly rotated in order to keep them balanced. A wagon makes a good family car because it's roomy & has plenty of space for lots of baggage.
Pretty good for the miles
My car has almost 170K miles on it and still runs like a champ. It handles like a sports car. The All Wheel Drive is unmatched, this car STICKS to the snowy/icy Tahoe roads, it doesn't slide, even if you try. There were a few issues over the years, like a bad oil leak, broken axel, and bearing problems, but considering the wear and tear that a car with this many miles gets, not to mention the horible road conditions (pot holes) in Tahoe, it has done pretty well. I will continue to buy Subarus.
First car, first love!
The '95 was the first year of the Outback, which was really nothing more than a Legacy Wagon with two-tone paint and more rugged interior. I absolutely loved this car. I drove it on many a long road-trip. It was perfect (snow, desert, city traffic). Crank shaft sensor needed to be replaced, but that's about it in 10 years of ownership. Completely reliable. I'm almost sad that I moved on (to a 2005 Outback), but I wanted side-curtain airbags because now I have a child. I had the manual 5-speed. This car never let me down.
College Vehicle
I'm a poor college student, so this was a great choice of car for me. It was very affordable, and I know I can rely on it to last until I'm done with college. It's roomy, gets good mileage, and with teh five speed transmission it's fun to drive. The additional cargo room is a huge plus when moving back and forth between home and school. The exterior looks great, so even though I'm driving a station wagon, it doesn't cramp my style.
Good car, but reliability a problem
Bought this car 18 months ago with only 49,000 miles. Since then have had problems with front axle, gas gauge, and check engine has come on multiple times. Automatic transmission whines terribly. Even so, it's a good car, styling is great, and acceleration not bad.
best cars
We bought this car with 120K miles on it. Now it has 160K and is still running strong. It does excellent in the snow, and we have only had to do the regular maintenance on it. Had a '92 Subaru wagon before this one with 180k that was still going strong with no problems until it got totaled. Unfortunately, the wagons will not fit 3 car seats in the back, so we have to search, very reluctantly, for something else. We will dearly miss our Subarus! Interior has held up well, with 3 kids and a dog and numerous camping trips. Speedometer does some weird tricks. Hauls 3 bikes, a rocketbox, and snowboards easily on top. Mechanically exceptionally sound. Where is the Subaru minivan?
One Awesome Car!
I bought my Subaru back in April with near 140k on it. I was very skeptical about this, but then I started to look at these reviews and realized that these are one of the best cars out there! It has never given me trouble and now it has 148k miles on it. Very happy with this car, would most definitely buy another.
Best cars ever!!!
I have not a single complaint about this car. It did it's job and did it very well! I never worried about it leaving me stranded going any distance in any weather conditions. It went on cross country trips, in the woods (on and off trails!) and did great! Spent its entire life in the Rocky Mountains. It held up like a champ, till the last few months I had it. At 180K I had to replace the alternator and then the keyway on the crankshaft broke. Some JB weld and she was going again. Then a solenoid in the tranny was bad causing the AWD to have problems, i,e. wheels dragging when wheel turned tightly. I sold it for next to nothing at 185,000. Still miss it soo much!! Can't wait to get another!!
Rock Solid
One of the best cars I have owned. Quite, reliable and safe. Bought this 10 year old car and took it on real long drives (~900 miles a day!). The car just starts and runs. Did not spend a dime on anything other oil changes. Decent fuel economy (20/27 city/hwy), stiff handling, good music system. Needs more power and of course better styling. But nothing really bad.
Reliable Used Car
We purchased this car about two and a half years ago for a little less than $3K. It has held up very well over all and now has about 122K miles on it. The starter needed to be replaced and the ball joint on the passenger side wheel just was replaced but all other maintenance has been standard stuff. Given that the car is 12 years old, that's a pretty decent record for two and a half years.
Simply no better AWD on the market
Owned since new. Absolutely no issue at all with about 150,000 miles. Solid, reliable and simply the best AWD system available, period. No leaks, no rattles and never a breakdown or problem at all. If anyone tells you Subaru has problems they probably do not perform routine care. We have owned Subaru since the late 70's and will buy again. living in Northern New England, there is no mroe reliable care than a Subaru for all seasons.
Super Reliable 1995 Subaru Wagon
I'm the original and sole owner of my 1995 Legacy L wagon. As of July 07 it has 125000 miles and is going strong. Three years ago I bought a 2nd, newer Subaru thinking I'd sell the '95 after another winter. Well, I'm still attached to it because it's just SO reliable. Engine needed new oil gaskets at about 95000 mi, that's about it. It's a 5 speed manual with original clutch. Changed oil and rotated tires every 5000 milies and the car stays happy. Like other reviewers, my gas gauge is weird... use the trip odometer. Car still gets ~26 mi to gallon.
Wonderful Car
I bought the car new and 12 year later it's still going strong with 212,000 miles. I kept up oil changes and all scheduled maintenance. Very reliable and can go anywhere. It's just started to have some problems - the ABS light is on and needs sensors replaced. I'm currently in the process of buying a used Subaru Forester with 90,000. I love Subaru reliability and can say with confidence that I will also have one.
Deathwagon
I called my Subaru a Deathwagon for a GOOD reason- It could handle ANYTHING I put it through. I drove my ninja to the ground (rarely did repairs & oil) and he still kept going strong. The only thing that stopped him was being T-boned, which bent the frame, and insurance totaled him out. His body died at 18 years old, but the engine (about 185,000) is going strong in another Subie :) I drove 40mph in HARSH Utah ice &snow storms. While every other car was pulling over, my Subaru handled every slip and slide with grace. I can't explain what this fantastic vehicle and I went through, as I am a very aggressive driver- car chases, sidewalks, fields, bicyclists, long road trips, barriers, etc.
Great Car!
I bought this car used in 2002, drove like a brand new car and continued to perform and handle like new with routine maintenance and care. All standard and optional features continued to perform as new - rear window defrost and wipers, cruise control, audio, auto locks, mirror adjust, air conditioning, everything!
1995 Subaru AWD L Legacy
I just bought my 95 Subaru Legacy Sedan with 86000 miles on it because I know Subaru's great reputation. There are only a few things wrong with it: gas gauge broken, dome light out, and it needs a few regular maintenence things done, like an oil change and transmission fluid change. But it is a great car in great condition, and I am looking forward to many years with it. My family's last Subaru had almost 200000 on it before we traded it in, and it was still running.
Nice Car All In All
Really nice car. Handles great. Plowed through 4 feet of snow like nothing. Well built and easy to work on. The awd is better than other subaru's I have driven.
I LOVE MY SUBY!!!
I'm not big into cars, but my Subaru gives me great gas mileage, its very comfortable, and very safe. Its fun to take the all wheel drive and go flying around sand dunes or off road too.
Most trouble free car!
I've been driving this car for 7 year and have spent nothing on repairs. The alternator was replaced on a recall and the knock sensor under warranty. Oil change is a breeze. Filter and drain plug can be reached without jacking. Good handling, a little weak on pickup. Good in snow unless it's deep (15" plus)tends to pack under the body.

Good for all seasons
I've driven it for 75000 miles over the last seven years with comfort and confidence. We've taken two circular tours of the US and Canada, often hauling a full load of camping equip. What snow or heavy rains we've met we've driven through and over without pause. I hate to think of selling it but the rumors about the 2005 Legacy are tempting.
fet
very comfortable to drive reliable and low maintenance
No Worries...
This is an awesome car. Confidence driving in any weather. Incredibly reliable.... point and go in any weather. I've had this car for almost 9 years and can't tell you how many times accidents were avoided because my car would hold the road and maneuver when others could not. If you take care of this car, change the oil regularly and mind the maintenance, it'll reward you well for many-many years and miles. All members of my family own at least one Subaru (no dealers, just happy customers). There aren't many products on the market (even beyond cars) that I can speak as confidently about than with Subaru.
300,000 miles and still going
Well it hit 300,000 miles this year. I converted it to Mobil one full synthetic extended mileage oil from day one. Auto transmission stopped backing up at 250,000 replaced with junk yard transmission which has a strange noise in it, but has held together for the last 80,000 miles. These cars are indestructible. They just rust away. Side note, I drove a 1988 to 480,000 miles, finally rusted in two and couldn't get it through a wv state inspection, or I would still be driving it the 2.2 L engines are the gest Subaru ever made. Bill
Good Little Car
Bought at 98k miles, sold at 125k. This car had an oil leak when I bought it, a pretty impressive one where the fumes made me nauseous. After I got that fixed (oil pump resealed), and put on new struts and windshield, it was a good little car. In typical Subaru fashion, I could take it anywhere, do anything in winter. It would go through snow up past the bumper like a little submarine, and cling to the road like a booger. This was the only car I've had that, on a blizzardy day, traffic would be going nowhere near fast enough for me, and I'd be that guy over in the snowy lane, driving the speed limit on two or three inches of powder. The reason I sold this car was it seemed like it was developing some weird AWD issues. On turning the wheel to the max, it experienced that AWD hesitation/shimmy, but also occasionally it would do this ultra-weird pronounced lurching. No idea what that was, let the next guy figure it out (yes, I told him).
