Poor engineering, cannot trust vehicle for trips

I am reluctant to trust this vehicle for long distance trips at 55,000 miles on the odometer. Here is why. Car was plagued with bearing and brake problems, three computer and head unit recalls, and issues regarding poor quality rubber components. Ongoing issues exist regarding tire and wheel noise that may be continued bearing or brake issues. Overall, Subaru did not roll out a well engineered vehicle, and appears to have cut corners on bearing quality and plastic/rubber quality. I think Subaru's attempt at utilizing environmentally friendly plastics, plastic brake caliper cylinders, and probable outsourcing bearings overseas resulted in a poor overall product. I am afraid this may show up in other areas--e.g. engine longevity, rear bearings, possible failure of engine and transmission rubber/plastic seals, possible failure of wiring insulation, possible weakness in hose quality, etc. -Alignment was needed off the lot. Aligned under warranty. -The backup screen froze at 120 miles and Subaru implemented a full recall on the basic head unit. -Oil pan bolt was overtightened to the oil pan from factory. Made of soft metal, and is too short. Replaced under warranty. -Right and left front wheel bearings failed within 30,000 miles and were replaced under warranty. -Left front CV axle boot failed at 25,000 miles due to failed clamp. CV shaft was replaced under warranty. -All rubber brake lines were recalled and replaced under warranty due to poor quality rubber. -Rear brakes squeaked at 30,000, so replaced with superior aftermarket ceramic pads at my expense. -Rear rotors rusted on edges badly, making excessive noise by 50,000 miles, so replaced both with superior aftermarket rotors at my expense. -Both front calipers failed at 51,000 miles, ruining both rotors. Replaced at my expense with redesigned OEM calipers. Replaced rotors with superior aftermarket rotors at my expense. Subaru and dealership mishandled this badly. Redesigned caliper availability was very poor. No recall was issued. Car was parked for over three months due to unavailable diagnosis and unavailable parts. -4 coils replaced under recall. ECU reprogrammed. Other issues: -No place to put change for tolls. -Lack of a CD player when CDs are still in use. -Visibility out the back is not very good. Camera helps. -Power steering understeers yet is very sensitive, leading to wandering if a jittery driver. - If you change your own oil, it is a very low car, and the drain plug is easy to ruin.

Imprezive Impreza!

JPuraVida, 02/12/2017

This is my second Subaru Impreza, but my first sedan. The 2017 Premium looks great. Nice lines, wheels and profile Inside, it feels like a Camry, or Accord...bigger than you would think. Controls are basic, intuitive, and easy to use. CVT acceleration is smooth and comes without buzz, which is a good thing! For 2017, Subaru has hushed the cabin and road noise. Their new platform gives this Impreza a sportier feel and very attentive steering. The heated seats and moonroof add to the upscale feeling. Braking is good, not great, which is usually the case in this class. AWD is awesome and worth paying extra for vs. a Sentra, Corolla, or others. Overall, this is another winner for Subaru!

Huge and Horrible upgrade in Technology

This is the 5th subaru that i have owned. So I think its safe to say that i am brand loyal and big fan up to this point, but this may be the last. I bought a brand new 2017 impreza sport with almost all of the options. The within the first week of taking ownership the screen had gone blank with nothing working that was run through it. Was replaced. Another 2 weeks later the same problem happened again. So out of the first month of ownership it spent 2 weeks in the shop. I am still having problems now where every other time i go to start the car the radio resets back to defualt deleteing all radio stations and such. Have tried to get a hold of the service manager to no avail. This may be my first run at the lemon law. learned my lesson never buy the first year of the redesign.

I was researching buying a new vehicle for 2 months and heard alot of good reviews on Subaru vehicles. I looked at the redisgned Subaru impreza sport and was impressed with the exterior and interior design along with the additonal tech and safety features. I purchased the car on Memorial day weekend. Worst mistake I made to date. The vehicle has returned to Subaru service department in Connecticut (dealer and location will not be disclosed but they have been working with me and very professional). First about 1 week after purcahseing the Impreza the eyesight feature disabled itself on 3 different occasions. Two of the three times wather was clear and sunny. I made videos to show the service department and they stated it was a software update that was needed and the car returned to me on Thursday of the same week. The following day the eyesight disabled itself again along with the volume control and back up camera (again clear sunny day). Recorded the issues again and showed it to the service department. Vehicle was returned to the dealer and a updated software was installed in the vehicle the lead tech at the dealer filed and left a open tech claim on the vehicle . Fast forward two weeks went grocery shopping got out the vehicle (keep in mind the car is on) closed the door to open trunk and retrieve phone that was ringing the car locked its self. I had the smart key in my pocket try using it to unlock the car and it wouldn't work. I tried using the manual key to open the vehicle that didn't work either. I walked 1 hour total to and from the shooping center just to get the spare key to try to open the doors and that didn't work either. (During this time the car is still on). Could'nt take a video of this new incident because my phone was locked iside my car. Called Subaru and explained the situation they sent a tow to open the door and Suabru Customer Service said to immediatly take the car to the dealer as this might be a computer issue. The car has now been in the service department for 4 days with a perexsiting open tech case. The dealer calls me up and states they can't find anything work with the car. This has been a very frustating 2 months with this car. One would expect these issues with a much older model car not a brand new one. I have had Hondas and Nissan and never had a issue with these car. I must say has a company Subaru is trying to do the wright thing especially since this is the first time I ever purchase a Subaru vehicle but after all this is over I will never buy another Subaru again.

Most problematic New Car I have ever purchased!

UPDATE: We have had the car a year. It still occasionally has issues with the nav/radio system. Sometimes it just doesn’t work. Maybe once a month this happens. Sometimes restarting the car works but often you just have to wait a day or so. We had the system replaced multiple times before but considering there continues to be problems we assume more replacements will not correct it. We bought the top of the line 2.0i Limited Imprezza Sedan with the Harmon Kardon audio and have had numerous issues with the radio/nav system. It completely went dead within 5-days of purchase leaving us 300 miles of a road trip with no audio. Through electronic issues this eventually drained the battery and we were left jumping our new car after manually unlocking the transmission and pushing it out of the garage. They couldn't get replacements for weeks on account of new parts not yet being available for this car, which was frustrating. It was finally replaced and still doesn't work; now the back up camera is broken. Very frustrating. Have had it into the dealer 4 times in the first month of ownership. Not sure if they will get it fixed. Dealer mentioned another Imprezza in their inventory is having the same issues. Not very confident in Subaru's reliability at this point. As a quick side bar the brand new Legacy loner they gave us also had electronic problems; its windows operators were faulty. We have very little confidence in this car and our dealer. Looks like a lemon to me.

Surprisingly well rounded upscale sedan in Limited

Jason H, 07/05/2018

After returning my beloved Jetta TDI to VW a year ago, I took a leap of faith and bought a new 2017 Impreza Limited sedan with every added option included. One year verdict: I am glad I did— the new platform and upgraded features really transformed the model. The car is surprisingly well rounded. It handles well, is reasonably quiet, has sufficient power for normal driving, and is effectively an upscale sedan with the upgraded audio and Harmon Kardon speakers, 8” touchscreen with connectivity, and nicely done leather interior with comfortable seats. (Passengers seem uniformly happy and tell me I bought a “luxury” car before I remind them it is an Impreza.) I have grown very found of the adaptive cruise control, steering responsive LED headlights, and other EyeSight safety features that I now can’t imagine living without. Subaru really knocks it out of the park with safety, and the tech available is now leading edge too. The AWD s a nice bonus in the winter (the car handles weather very well and feels solidly planted at all times). I get exactly the advertised MPG of 28 mixed and 38 highway using hand calculations from fill-ups. The car is no speed demon, but I have never felt like it was underpowered for normal highway and city driving. The CVT is actually fairly innocuous, and simulates traditional gears under hard acceleration or when using the paddle shifters— much more pleasant than some others I have driven. The engine can get a little noisy if pushed hard, but the sound is not too harsh. I have not had any reliability problems. The only service other than the initial oil change and tire rotation was a software update to the infotainment head unit, which seemed to fix a few minor gremlins that other owners have also mentioned. While the sedan lacks the added versatility of the hatch, I have actually come to appreciate two minor advantages: it is just a shade quieter in the cabin and gets a bit better fuel economy than the hatchback. I have also been able to fit quite long items in with the back seats down— the sedan is a few inches longer so permits quite long parcels if needed. The roof comes with roof rack attachment points (under the plastic runner if needed), but I have not installed a rack. All in all, I have to say that this sedan has exceeded my expectations, after driving German cars previously. An AWD Audi A3 quattro or BMW 328d xDrive with similar features would cost an easy 15K more (they are only available as extra packages on higher trims), would depreciate much faster, and would run considerably more in maintenance and fuel (not to mention reliability differences). So, if you’re willing to forego some extra power and an elite nameplate, you can have much of the same cake and eat it too!

I have a 2012 Legacy and this new Impreza is definitely better. It's much quieter. It handles better. With the Eyesight package it's definitely safer to drive. I did a lot of research before buying the Impreza. If you have any doubts put them to rest. This car is very nice and I would recommend it highly to anyone who is considering it. After driving it for a year I would definitely recommend this car. After 18 months I’d still highly recommend one.

I'm not that Imprezed...

Sorry I couldnt help myself with the title. After reading dozens of reviews online, and lets admit, after a while they all start to sound the same, I decided to drive a new Impreza, the Sport version of course, the only one that looks any good (I drove base model as well later on). The interior was nice and comfortable, with symmetrical lines, unlike a lot of cockeyed, crooked designs like Elantra's and Sonata's, good visibility. Brake and gas pedal was almost at the same level, so the transition from gas to brake is easy whereas a lot of other cars you can almost get your foot caught. The cvt sucks of course, never feels like it has any torque and even though I go easy on my car and don't accelerate hard at all, it felt like Im pushing the car hard ( wonder how its going to feel 10 years from now). The shifting is smooth (its a cvt) but its loud, and I reckon will be a problem for a lot of drivers with sporty ambitions. Contrary to what reviews would have you believe, you can tell these are low profile tires by riding in it, and steering was artifically hard and didnt provide much feedback. Simple low speed manuevers at gas station proved to be a chore, and the lower end model felt more nimble with better steering feel and smaller screen that won't reflect as much sunlight in your face. I cant believe Im the only one to mention a-c and heater vents, in all 3 cars, they were hard to move, like they were sticking. The noise levels were fine, Id say comparable to the rest of the class. Overall, not any better than my 99 Accord, and makes me wonder besides the silly gadgets and some mpg imprevements, how much have cars improved in the last 20 years....

Our brand new Subaru Impreza 2017 completely died within the first month. We've had it in the shop now for over a week and they can't seem to fix it. I've never had a worse experience!! Bought Toyotas and Hondas in the past and always had great experiences. Will never buy another Subaru as this is an awful experience!!

Impreza 2.0 Sport Sedan

Jim W., 06/25/2018

This is my 4th Subaru. First two were very well used. I had bought my wife a 2016 Forester after our VW diesel buyout and I liked the AWD and the CVT worked great. This prompted me to check out Subaru for my new car. I looked online at the available models and settled on the Sport. Went to the dealership and drove the very one I had looked at online. I like the looks of the interior, and the red stitching sets it off. The AWD is great, inspires confidence in any driving condition. The CVT shifts smoothly, and the available sport mode with paddle shifters is a nice feature (although I don't use it often). The 8 inch radio screen is nice, but as others have mentioned the station presets have gone away a few times and Apple Carplay has failed to operate on 3 occasions. For Apple Carplay just shutting the car off and restarting fixes it. For the presets, the last time they disappeared I turned the radio off for 10 minutes (doesn't really have an off but the screen was blank) and when I turned it back on the presets had returned. Fuel economy is slightly lower than the EPA rating. I keep track of my mileage on fueleconomy.gov and mine is one of only 2 that have real world mileage on that site. I get 26-27 mpg city and I've gotten 33-34 max on the highway. This is calculated mileage using miles and gallons used, not the trip computer which usually gives a rating about 2 mpg higher than what I'm actually calculating. Most of my mileage is city which is reflected in the combined MPG rating below. Rear visibility is not the best as others have mentioned, especially when backing. The rear of the car sits up and the trunk spoiler doesn't help in this regard. The backup camera is very welcome for backing. I like the user configurable gage cluster on the dash. There are a number of different screens available (wheel slip and angle, light and turn signals, average fuel economy) but there is a screen where you can configure 3 different gages. I use oil temp, coolant temp and instant mpg. I find it odd that Subaru does not have their doors lock automatically when the car is put into gear or driven. Seems very odd these days. Also, the side view mirrors could use a blind spot lens. Trunk space is pretty good, but when picking up 3 people from the airport the trunk filled quickly and they had to hold some luggage. Not unexpected in a compact car though. I love the paint color (Blue Lapis Pearl) and the interior as I mentioned. Overall very pleased with the car. I've owned it 17 months now and have more than 10,000 miles on it. Had it in for the radio head recall for programming related to the backup camera, and also had an issue where the cruise control would turn off at random (turned out to be a faulty brake switch). Both were fixed quickly.

I have the car for almost 3 years now. It it was bad 3 years. There were issues with the radio from the get go. I went through countless firmware upgrades. My Bluetooth. AND Apple car play are still flaky. Just within last 2 weeks I am in the dealership second time for some recalls. And gas mileage is average 28, when it was suppose to be 28 in the city. I guess it drives ok, but for the price I paid for it - nothing but regrets. To the Subaru credit, they gave me 4 monthly payments check for my trouble. But I still wish I went with Civic when I was shopping. At least gas mileage would be much better.

I haven’t been able to enjoy this car since I bought it in June 2017. Recall after recall - not exaggerating - at least 2 per year. Things they have already replaced getting recalled for 2nd and 3rd times. First it was because it was burning too much oil and now it’s the ignition coils. I don’t have time to go to sit at the dealership every month for hours on end. This car is JUNK and Subaru has done hardly anything to compensate.
