Dangerous on snowy roads

barbarelli, 02/01/2015

This is my second Subaru, bought the 2015 because my older one was very good in the snow. The 2015 feels like a death trap. The least little bit of snow on the roads and the car slides all over the road leaving no control even at 30 miles and hour. The car isn't safe at all in the winter. Seems Subaru isn't on top of the game when it comes to safety when it comes to the North East winters. Don't feel I should have to buy new tires for a new car just to keep from crashing. Shame on Subaru.

Update: "There is still no way out of this fiasco without either buying a new vehicle, or installing an updated version of an entertainment system to the tune of thousands of dollars. Took it to the dealer and they were still no help. Thought about a new Subaru, but why should I reward a company that has no compunction about selling a piece of crap system in the first pace? If they at least offered to install a new system, that would make all the difference in the world!" This vehicle is not a bad SUV, but there are some features that are so frustrating and aggravating that I have been severely tempted to get rid of it. The so-called phone feature is the worst on the market and should be a forced recall due to safety concerns. It takes 9 steps to insert a phone number by voice, and six by your phone. There is absolutely no way in which to download your contacts for use that does not include having to try it over and over. I have more than 350+ numbers in my phone and it is a daunting task. I have only managed to get 4 numbers in my cars memory so far, and that took over 7 hours and 4 different people trying to do it. You also cannot use the speed dial feature if you are moving! What the HELL kind of safety feature is that?! You have to dig on your phone and search for a name and it isn't easy. Not having this feature is bad, and a concern for me and others as to how UNSAFE this unit is.

Jan. 7, 2017 update -- We kept the Forester for about a year and then traded it in on a new 2016 Mazda CX-5, a far superior vehicle. For one thing, handicapped and ill people who need a seat cushion don't have to sit in the back seat.

not being able to pair my phone has really turned me off. it is to difficcult to manually put your numbers in. the salesman could not get one in. had more excuses and then said we had to have had gps for it to work correctly. suburu is way behind technology that has been arou nd for years. my last 4 cars had no problem pairing my phone. this is a neccessity for me i work in my car. when they sell the car they need to be specific npt when your picking it up.

Purchased my Forester new in May 2015. The ride is somewhat noisy and rigid. Bumps are felt. however, winter driving is great! Vehicle eats up the snow and rain. Interior and electronics were basic but its what I wanted. Over time, the bluetooth functioned irratically. I would often have to put my phone on the passenger seat to eliminate the static. Charging ports dont charge very fast. The Forester is not the greatest joy to drive but it gets the job done very well and is reliable. All I could ask for. Overall, a solid vehicle. I wouldnt hesitate to buy again!

A dispassionate assessment of the Subaru Forester

All in all a first rate trouble free automobile. Low cost routine maintenance and high gas mileage. Excellent acceleration despite mundane horsepower. Very good control in all weather conditions and on snow. Seats are comfortable and front seats are adjustable. Major issue is suspension system. It is not very forgiving on rough roads and tends to bounce occupants uncomfortably. Otherwise a wonderful car with few negatives. I would buy it again without hesitation.

Burns Oil

We bought our 2015 Subaru Forester and loved it at first. At about 30k miles it started burning oil. This continued to get worse and worse. We brought it to Subaru multiple times for the problem. It’s continued to burn more and more oil, but not quite enough for them to fix the problem. You need to do an oil consumption test. The tolerance is 10.5 ounces for 1200 miles driven. Last time we burned 10 ounces, so not quite enough. We decided to get rid of the car. The overall all experience was extremely frustrating.

We have a 1999 forester. It travels on ice like a beast. Best car I've had traveling 68 miles twice a day in ND. We bought a new 2015 Forster expecting the same results. It has a my of bells and whistles but the ice handling is scary. It feels like the car is going to go out of control. We are actually going to sell it because we feel so unsafe in winter traveling.

If you are larger try the leather seats as they are much more comfortable, both my wife and I are large than average and own this same vehicle and felt the difference in the comfort v.s the cloth seats. Also the nav option is a total waste of money as it is difficult to read and use I ended up using my old Garmin it's easier to read and use. Also if you can get the duel climate control as it is much stronger especially the air conditioner than the singular digital version that I have. My wife has the duel and it is so much better we use hers in the summer.

Bought our Forester in Nov. of 15. Our biggest complaint is the very uncomfortable seats. They are very hard and lack any amount of comfort. Long trips are nearly impossible with this car. The electronics are very confusing and difficult to figure out. We have never been able to get the garage door to sync with the car and the phone to work hands free. It has been reliable and is easy to get in and out of. Visibility is pretty good.

This is our second Forester, and we are very pleased. It is everything we wanted and expected it to be. We are getting about 22 MPG for real stop and go traffic, and about 31 or 32 for hops to the store or shopping - this is in-city, but not heavy, stop & go.

I have lived in wyoming-nebraska all my life and driven on snow packed-icy roads with many different cars...rear wheel, four wheel drive cars as well as pickups. The Subaru forester is the worst vehicle I have ever driven in my life on ice. You have absolutely no control-it feels like you are floating all over the road and if you go anything over thirty mph.....you are totally out of control. Shame on you Subaru for claiming to share the love....this car will end up killing people who trusted your company for designing safe cars!

Full disclosure: the car's been in my driveway for a day and these are first impressions with more to follow. I obsess on research before I buy and in this case started with a crush on an Acura AWD which quickly faded before I moved on to a BMW 3-Series Xdrive. The idea of a Forester came out of left field and became viable after a test drive. I fell in love with the excellent visibility, easy access and turbo engine (I owned an 05 Legacy wagon GT manual and it was a rocket). The hook - 20K less than a Bimmer and better AWD than its competitors.

I did the research and all I all saw by the major review sites was excellent. Purchased the 2015 Forester and liked it originally. Then I took a trip from Detroit to Chicago, the roads were icy but traffic was moving at 60-70 mile per hour clip along the freeway. The Foresters rear end would slip side to side at 35-40 mph. this contiued to happenfor the next hour as i drove with my hazards on.( Yes, I was that guy!)Finally due to safety concerns, losing my rear wheels next to speeding semi's, I drove side roads the remaining 100 miles to Chicago.I spoke with service Mgr. she said Subaru called and asked if she had heard any complaints concerning this same problem. So they are aware.

Prior to my purchasing a Subaru Forester I read many reviews that suggested this would be a reliable vehicle, and it has been anything but reliable. My vehicle has only 100,000 km and have needed to replace Rear Hatch Switch, Front Wheel bearings, Rear Brake Calipers, Windshield Wiper Motor ($800.00!), multiple wheel bolts these easily strip even when correctly torqued. Really, my worst purchase ever.

Very Weak Engine And Burns Too Much Oil

Mister M, 10/10/2019
2015 Subaru Forester 2.5i Premium PZEV 4dr SUV AWD (2.5L 4cyl CVT)
2 of 3 people found this review helpful

I just got rid of my 2015 Subaru Forester. At first I did love the thing. We had a Honda Civic and because I had kids the car was way too small and unsafe. The construction of the civic was way too cheap and light and the doors felt like paper when you closed them. My wife and I decided to stop by the Subaru dealer, test drove a brand new Forester and ended up taking it home. What I loved about the Forester was the seating position height, it is one of the nicest vehicles I have driven and it does feel great. What's the problem now in 2019 at 60,000 miles? The engine is very poor. For city driving is totally fine, but once you enter the freeway and whenever you are in a situation where you need to accelerate to get out of there the car will fail you. For driving on the highway on steep uphill roads the engine will struggle and it is strained big time. Every time I drive from Los Angeles to San Diego by the time I get there one full quart of synthetic oil has evaporated. Yep just like that. That's not good at all. Subaru has made all their cars so that it doesn't warn you or tell you when you have to change the oil, worse, if the engine is really low in oil nothing will warn you so you better carry one or two quarts or oil in your trunk. I regret getting this car because it cost me way too much and I honestly will never again buy a vehicle with four cylinders, even if it has turbo which is even worse. Poor little engines are getting strained really bad. And last, when my wife and I went to the dealer at first to buy this vehicle I had no clue this thing had a CVT transmission and at that time I didn't even know what the heck a CVT transmission is so that was another huge mistake from my part for not doing my homework and for assuming the car was a normal car like any other. Regarding the AWD, well, it is useless to me because I never go to the snow and here in Los Angeles it hardly ever rains so I honestly don't need an AWD. Regarding the CVT transmission, well, what I have learned recently is that Subaru is kind of "testing" out all these new CVT technology they are putting into theirs cars because of government gas consumption regulations so Subaru was kind of forced to do something about providing more gas efficient cars and we are being their guinea pigs in short words. At this point in time nobody really knows how long a CVT transmission will last, and the Subaru's user manual doesn't even tell you when you should be doing all your maintenance. I have been talking to the Subaru's technicians and they don't even know when or if they should even perform a transmission fluid flush because they don't know if it will damage the CVT. It is a trip what Subaru is doing right now and for those reasons I decided to get rid of the Forester before my extended warranty ran out. Cute little car though. Maybe in around six years or so when their Ascent, Foresters and Outbacks start hitting the 200,000 mile range then I'll know if is a good idea to buy a vehicle with a CVT transmission.

Roomy and reasonable - until CVT fails

ATLsubie, 06/25/2021

The Forester is an easy car to drive. The vertical profile and windows give you lots of visibility for checking blind spots and maneuvering safely. You can fill the cargo bed with stuff, stand under the rear lift gate in the rain and not stoop (at 6'2") and stay dry. It isn't speedy on the take off. It isn't super comfortable in the seats. But it works. Until the CVT starts to go, at around 100,000 miles. And, just check the bulletin boards online for subaru forester. You'll see the problem. Dealer replaces the valve body? check. cost? At least $1400 USD parts+labor (no tax). Failure again in less than 3500 miles? check. Am I only the one seeing this pattern? nope. The fact this is a problem ACROSS model years in the Forester (and presumably in all the models using this same or similar CVT), suggests you should NOT buy the Subaru. A pity, as I've owned 3 in the past.

Why do people like Subarus so much?

This is my first and last Subaru. I have a 2015 Forester. Bought it for the turbo. Accelleration is great, but the touring suspension is firm, leading to a lousy ride. Bluetooth rarely works the way it should - drops calls all the time. Interior quality is terrible. Vinyl on driver's seat is cracking. Dealer blamed me - said it was a sharp object in my pocket. It's a four inch rip - looks like a 20 year old car. Brakes are terrible. I hit them at high speeds and the rumble and shake. Dealer said they were working fine. It has been reliable, but the quality just isn't there. Seat belts with child car /booster seats are hard to fasten - so much for kid friendly cars. Maybe dogs are happier in Subarus. Paint is thin and the steel dents easily. Subaru dealers think they have good customer service, but they really don't. I've waited three hours for an oil change (and that's with an appointment). I'll be going back to driving Chevys again.

This car was purchased because of an excellent Consumer Reports review of it, and it's Eyesight accident avoidance system. Eyesight is not reliable, working intermittantly. Subaru did not include Forrester in it's recall of Eyesight for its other cars. Pitiful. Toyota has always been reliable. We should have stayed with Toyota. At six year this car is just OK. Many recalls on it. Although it is zippy in town... feels like a tin can on the highway. Leather seats are breaking down so the quality wasn’t great. This will be my first and LAST Subaru product.

I bought my second Subaru knowing it would be reliable and hold some value. I chose a 2015 Forester. Color is a newer Subaru deep red. Mechanically the car has been as advertised so far. I am new to the CVT transmission but Subaru is not and they seem to have it right. My complaint is with the paint job. I have a 20 year old Ford truck that has less chips in the paint. The paint on this vehicle is the thinnest and poorest quality of any vehicle I have ever owned. This Subaru is the newest vehicle we own and with only 10,000 miles on it, looks older than any of our other vehicles. Thank you Subaru for eleminating another brand from the vehicles I would purchase! I will have to get rid of this one while I can still get something out of it and will never own another. After 59000 miles and 4 years we still own the car. First , the bad; I still maintain the finish is of poor quality. Very difficult and time consuming to make this car look good. Easily scratched and rubbed. After 4 years, I am not a fan of the cat transmission and will do my best to never own another in a car. That is not based on mechanical issues, only personal preference. Shortly after hearing about transmission failures, Subaru extended the warranty to 100,000 miles. Initially I thought that was great but now I believe they may be just trying to avoid class action suits. The good; my wife loves the little car. She likes the way it rides, handles and just zips around everywhere she goes. Believe me, my wife uses machinery to its full intended purpose and beyond. Have had 1 recall, minor, handled by dealer, on 2nd set of tires and original brakes. So far has required oil changes filters and tire rotations. You can’t do and transmission service of any kind is what dealer tells me.

Engine replacement at 60K, now transmission total

Don' Buy a SUBARU!!!!! After driving this car for almost 90Kmiles I have to say I won't buy another Subaru. Subaru replaced the engine. The block was defective burning oil at 40K miles. Now with a new engine the car is what it should have been on day one. Subaru is surviving on the older cars reputation for reliability their new cars are junk. Buy something else. Lot's of options now. At 140K miles the CVT transmission malfunctioned. Driving on a hot summer day the valve body shut the car down. Every warning light on the dash came on and I lost cruise control. Defective part caused the problem, Subaru of America is a joke.

Terrible on icy roads

Had high expectations when purchasing the vehicle as all the reviews were great.....!!! The first time I drove on icy roads I was extremely disappointed as I felt like I was sliding all over the road. You are only able to go about 35 mph and still feel like your in control. The vehicle has very poor traction on icy roads it fishtails all over the road. I also tried new better tires and that did not improve the problem. I am going to get rid of this vehicle as I do not feel safe driving on icy roads. I live in western MI where winters can be harsh.

Disappointment

I did much research before making a decision for Subaru; safety is very important and I thought the Forester was my answer. I am extremely disappointed with three major issues! First the interior light in the cargo area does not come on automatically; you must locate the switch, in the dark, and turn it on. Good luck!! Secondly, the USB plug is so inconvenient being located in the center console one must remove the tray to even get near it then trying to plug the cord in is nearly impossible!! Lastly, I wanted a sun roof desperately......however, the noise from the roof being open is unbearable!!! I cannot enjoy my sunroof .... Wasted money and extreme disappointment!!! Little annoyances......the AC seems to be on or off. I cannot testify to the heat because I only leased the car a few months ago. The Bluetooth is loud ...... Very good for those who are hard of hearing but annoying for others and sometimes does not connect. Tight fit in back seat especially with car seat. My husband is 6'4" and he is not real comfortable in the front....never fit in back. Overall I am disappointed ..... I expected more for my money.

Have had a Subaru 2015 for almost a year now. Not impressed. At best average. Small display screen, Busy display with not much info. Not much storage in rear cargo area, less than my previous Prius. Air Conditioning can not keep up with the Florida Heat. ABS light has just come on. Its less than a year old and I'm getting an ABS warning light? Inside front driver and passenger storage design is very poor (Subaru - See Toyota for how to design for inside storage). Interior looked good at first but after owning it I notice more and more how cheap it was made. My advise is take the high ratings for Subaru with a grain of salt. I'm going to take my ass kicking and trade it in for something else

original tires lasted till almost 50k. Only had 1 repair, sensor in gas tank at about 50k miles. cost about 550. only driving complaint is high winds when driving over 70-75. unfortunately the bluetooth is not so good for talking over 50mph. I was originally going to get a camry and decided on this due to safety and fun. A sales guy took me driving on a dirt trailer behind dealership and I was highly impressed. I have sometimes taken it on dirt roads and the beach and enjoyed it. Only 1 time got stuck in deep mud next to a road. I got the eyesight and I am very glad I did. I have young drivers and I feel more comfortable/confident with the eyesight. Love the adaptive cruise control! I plan to keep this another 3.5 yrs. I am very glad I bought this.

0-60 time seems like 2 days. Poor fuel mileage on all but flat roads. Wear your glasses so you can see the 3” back up camera - set far away from your eyes. Fairly comfortable front seats - never rode in back. Hard ride and not entertaining. Great HID lights. Decent over all tech for the times Great AWD for staying ON the road thru mud and sneaux, but NOT a good off road vehicle. Does everything OK, but not great. Traded in a 2008 VW GTI on this Subie. Going back to a GTI for my next car.

Air Conditioning issues, at four years in. This is my 4th Subaru, and I have NEVER had AC issues. When I researched online many others having same issue. I would surmise the parts are inferior for some reason. And why so many recalls all of a sudden ? I contacted Subaru, because I find it so counter to Subaru reliability. Very prompt response, and covering the cost. Stick with Subaru !

Radio is a joke

Overall very pleased with performance and comfort of my Forester. But- the radio is a joke. With the level of technology today I expect better. This radio doesn’t reconnect automatically to my phone. Asks every time to choose a Bluetooth connection when there is only one choice in the list. Frequently the USB doesn’t work. It’s a crap shoot- sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. I read reviews before purchasing that gave info about low tech radio and I thought it would be no big deal. Blue tooth doesn’t allow connection while in motion (I can work with that) but when it disconnects while driving it becomes difficult to reconnect for navigation or music. It is possible to reconnect from phone controls but that means taking your attention from driving to reconnecting or coming to a complete stop which is not convenient on the freeway. I don’t need audiophile level sound in my vehicle but I do need a system that is reliable, convenient, and safe to use while the vehicle is in motion.

I'll be trading in my 2015 Subaru Forester next month. It is expensive to repair; replaced resonator, muffler and had the rear brake calipers seize so those had to be replaced too. What's next? No thanks, for an 8 year old car with 69000 km or not even 40000 miles, it is not worth it.

I settled on the Subaru Forester mainly because of value for money. I drove an Escape for years and loved it, but they were a little pricey by the time I was in the market for another. I did some homework, liked the sound of a Subaru due to safety ratings, MPG and price. I was impressed with the first one I test drove, by the roominess, visibility, comfort and price. Notice price keeps coming up. The ride was smooth, not super quiet but for an AWD I liked it. After almost three years, I was seduced by a Cadillac XT5 at a car show, but can't bring myself to give up the Subie. Pros for Subie: Fuel economy, for those of you who think it's no good, remember this is an SUV with AWD. I get over 30MPG on average, and have gotten as much as 36 (but only when I'm forced to drive slowly behind someone I can't get around) on hilly back roads. The visibility is the best I've ever experienced, good view out the back, the rearview camera - while not high tech does a good job of showing what's behind me even in low light situations. Cargo room is good, I can fit my bike inside without having to take the wheel off. It's comfortable, and good driving position. What else impressed me was the finish, while not flashy it feels sturdy. Some cars just feel cheap and plastic (read flimsy) when I get in. Cons: a little too much road noise, and the styling is bland. It's not a bad looking SUV, and it doesn't make it go faster or ride better if it looks better, and that's what's more important to me. The sound system could be better. I am thoroughly sold on my Forester, and would recommend it to anyone wanting a solid, well made, reliable and safe small SUV. Update: still sold on the Fozz. I will look at the 2019 this year, also look at Acura and Infiniti but I need to drive those two to decide. As far as reading reviews, if I had to buy a new vehicle today I would get a Limited or Touring model Forester. Update to the update: still no regrets but I'm looking at a Mazda CX-5 with the turbo, since I now want a little more high end vehicle. Subaru is still a great vehicle, but I'd like more power.

The only thing I needed fixed was the windshield when a huge rock hit it. I can get great gas mileage if I slow down, but who does that? Thus I have averaged around 27 mph. I have the eyesight feature that will break for you if it gets too close to an object. It warns you first with red lights and in that split second warning has helped a couple times. I really like ieyesight in cruise control driving from San Diego to Los Angelos. I owned a Pathfinder before, which was more comfortable and bigger, but worse gas militate, and not all wheel drive. I only use the navigation on long drives because my iPhone through the blue-tooth is faster for short distances. I got the roof racks foe my camping trips when I have a lot of cargo, I can carry two passenger with all the stuff I bring for major camping trips, probably three if I packed more carefully. I am hoping the car will last another 15 years.

Everything about the car is just as claimed by Subaru. I had a strange situation happen to me twice not more than 2 months apart about 1 year ago but not since or before. I have owned the car for exactly 4 years now. What happened was; as I was driving the engine suddenly for no reason started to under rpm and I could not get the engine to rev higher no matter how far I pushed on the gas pedal. The car was restricted to going less than 15 mph; all the warning and indicator lights were coming on. I had to keep my foot with steady and hard pressure on the gas pedal or it seemed it would shut down. I pulled over and shut the engine down, waited 3 minutes and put some engine oil in (it was low about half a quart). Started the engine up and it was almost normal in operation. This happened again about 3-4 weeks later. I shut the engine off again and waited a few minutes and the problem subsided. I told the dealer and they told me the car would have to be diagnosed at $100 an hour. I still don't have a clue as to what the problem was.

I was so disappointed the first time I drove this car at night. The interior is severely underlit. The mirrors, glove box and overall interior lighting are not sufficient. My model also did not have memory seats, which is a huge pain. I found the seats very uncomfortable. My model did not have remote start, so I had the dealer install and I was really disappointed in the way it worked - you still had to start the car again upon entering. The locks do not automatically lock - Subaru says this is a safely feature. Compare other models and the interior features far exceed the Forrester. I traded up to Escape within 30 days.

Noisy-yes, no automatic headlights, transmission shifting is not smooth from reverse to drive, very comfortable and safe. Automatic stopping works very well, especially for deer. 95 plus percent of driving was on paved highways. Needed to replace front brakes at 20,783 miles due to glazed rotors and pads having debris ground into surface. Seriously? It IS an SUV right? Of course, the ridiculously overpriced extended warranty did not cover this.

I needed something very reliable, easy to handle, good gas mileage and easy to get in and out of. This car is all that. I bought it new and have been very satisfied. UPDATE: I have been pleased with my Forester. It runs very well, and it is easy for me to get in and out of. Maintenance is reasonable and easily done. My only complaint is the clock. Over six months I lose about 10 minutes. When I try to change it, I can't. I only get the hour and not the minutes. Outside of this I am extremely pleased with my Subaru.

As an owner of a 2015 Subaru Forester Touring model, I will NOT recommend Subaru to anyone as long as they do NOT support their interior safety and electronics. After having the head unit/Infotainment unit replaced on 4/3/15, constant issue of the head unit's Bluetooth constantly disconnecting on the Samsung S5, iPhone 6, and Samsung S6 Edge. During the pickup of my vehicle on 4/3/15, the service tech felt he needed to advise me that Subaru does NOT support the latest device, the Samsung S6 or S6 Edge despite the fact it's the same bluetooth profiles in this device as previous Samsung models that are supported on their website.
