Four years in, I love my Crosstrek

I love the car. Interior-wise, as far as space, it's big enough for my needs, quite similar to the 2006 Pontiac Vibe I sold to get it. It's loaded with active safety technology. Contrary to Edmunds' review, the car is not underpowered, even on steep hills. The CVT transmission is smooth and precise, and I love the paddle shifters that give me manual control when I want it. The car has a nice, tight turning radius, and handles well with Subaru's praiseworthy AWD. It's a small SUV, with a very solid, almost muscular road feel. Finally, it's well crafted... and good to look at IMHO.

I am in my late 50's and a very active outdoorsy guy . I was searching for a vehicle that I could use as my daily work commuter that would get me around efficiently on snow covered roads since I live in a very rural area of Virginia. And since I am also an outdoor enthusiast I could also use it to transport my bicycle and kayak anywhere my journey would take me. A new large SUV or 4WD truck was out of the question due to the price of these rigs , and since the gas mileage isn't the greatest either on these larger rigs.. So I decided to purchase a small SUV. As I started looking at different brands and models I settled on a Subaru Crosstrek because it fit the bill as a utility vehicle that could use as my daily driver, plus transport my bicycle and kayak which I frequently use. And it would take me anywhere I needed to go in adverse weather conditions. . Fuel mileage was an important factor with my decision since I commute 45 miles a day to my job. I have not been disappointed with my decision with purchasing a 2019 CrossTrek. The gas mileage a averages between 32 -34 mpg as a commuter car, "with the CVT transmission". I installed crossbars on the roof and the car transports my bicycle and kayak as it was designed for. I have owned this car for nearly 2 months now and the odometer has just tuned over 3000 miles. I have not experienced any quality or reliability issues at all. This is a very comfortable car with a well designed , driver friendly interior. Has ample storage space behind the rear seat for luggage and groceries . The handling of this car is superb as it doesn't even handle like a small SUV. It handles crooked country roads like a dream . There isn't any body roll at all while driving on back country roads. The ride is firm, yet not choppy feeling. Feels smooth and makes me feel like I am in total control of the vehicle no mater what the road conditions are. Since we have experienced heavy rains in my local area some of the back country gravel roads have washed out and have deep gullies as a result of the flooding. I have driven this car across some of the washouts and it has enough ground clearance that I experienced no dragging of the bumpers or undercarriage. I would highly recommend this car to anyone needing a small crossover SUV . It handles back country roads like a champ. And on smooth highway's it rides and handles like a sports car. The exterior has a sporty appearance and is eye pleasing to look at.. I am looking forward to this winter because I anticipate that this car will be excellent on the snow covered rural roads where I live.

(2024 Update …2019 Crosstrek still going strong…no issues…we love this car. 40,000 miles. Note - Subaru improved the power/torque since 2019…however, power on 2019 is never an issue for us anyway. Love, love the adaptive headlights and AWD.) (March 2021 Update: Still loving our Crosstrek at 16,000 miles, no complaints. Fabulous driving in snow....Handles perfect, feel safe. (RIP Sean Walker 😞) 2019 - We tested every sub compact...And I mean every. Was a little concerned about Crosstrek acceleration, as we do mostly highway. Loved everything else, so purchased. Not real comfortable for larger individuals…it’s a sub-compact, ya’ll. Once you settle in...It’s got plenty of power. Handles super, brakes great, very comfortable ride, good suspension and turn ratio, easy to load, great visibility, adaptive cruise control, blinder lights, info screen is easy on eyes. Backup camera sharp. Gas mileage, pretty good. Could be a tad less wind noise on highway and tire noise, but just a tad. All the smaller SUV’s have that wind noise, unless you go for a luxury Volvo or Audi...Not worth the price tag. (Had a Volvo…drove like a dream…but very expensive to maintain and often in the shop…started to decline after 40,000 miles, everything…lots of electrical issues.) Honda HRV was the worst, terrible power on highway- loud road noise Nissan too loud, under-powered Toyota CHR - OK, no AWD Hyundai nice ride, loud on highway - too many recalls KIA Soul good acceleration, quiet ride and good handling, no AWD Sportage - nice ride, bad gas milage, too many recalls Mazda - loud road noise, but good acceleration Buick - decent acceleration…quiet, drives like a Buick, blah handling. Crosstrek - purchased at Downingtown, PA, Reedman Toll - Great price, comfortable to deal with sales staff - Sean Walker. Purchased the Limited version with all leather and Harmon stereo (actually has a cd player) ...Really sweetens the ride. Don’t really need the stereo upgrade - the base stereo was good enough…Just wanted a little more presence in audio. Power lift is not needed as the Crosstrek height is a comfortable reach. Highly recommend.

May be the last car we buy!

We just purchased the 2019 Subaru Crosstrek Premium a couple weeks ago, and we absolutely love it! Since we are retired now and we drive around 30,000 a year, we were looking for a reliable vehicle with a reasonable price tag, and with great gas mileage. We traded in a 2013 Ford Escape that was "loaded." In order to save money, we decided to purchase a "non-loaded" vehicle. The only 2 things I wanted for sure was heated seats and heated outside mirrors. Cody at Briggs Subaru in Topeka, Kansas, found us the vehicle we were looking for. The sticker on the Crosstrek said 27 city and 33 highway. Well, we have put 1200 miles on it already. The highest mileage we have attained is 40.2 mpg. and the lowest was 29.9. This beats the Escape mpg, which was 21 - 26 (on a good day). The ride is very smooth and the steering is quite tight. Just have to pay attention at all times. So far, we have only found 2 negatives. As in other reviews, the rate of acceleration was slow, but we are able to gain highway speed if we "push" it. The only other negative, so far, is getting in and out of the vehicle. Easier to get in and out of the passenger side, but still a little uncomfortable to exit. We can handle these "negatives", as the overall value and performance exceeds our expectations.

I have been reading about the lack of power on many reviews but it seems to have plenty of torque when you need it like pulling out in traffic it accelerates with plenty of power. The reason I own A Crosstrek is the fact that I purchased a 2019 Jeep Cherokee that after 4 months of driving was probably my worst buying choice ever, power was so bad it was frightening pulling onto a busy road. There is no comparison to the Crosstrek I love everything about this vehicle. I only wish I didn't have to take a bath trading a brand new jeep on it. But live and learn

Downsized from 18 Tacoma Offroad MT

I wanted to downsize from my Taco, which was a good truck but with my commute about an hour each way without traffic, I wanted something with better gas, but can still take up to the mountain for snow-tivities. I always owned vehicles with manual transmissions, but I wasn't really a big fan of the 18 Tacoma's gearbox. It was not very pleasant to change gears on it and they make it kinda easy to shift into reverse instead of first gear. It was also getting old dealing with it on steep Seattle hills. I came in originally intending to get a Premium Crosstrek with the CVT because of the mileage and ease, because at my age I don't care as much. As I test drove the CVT, I also noticed they had a Premium with a manual that was about $2.2k less because they also include less crazy packages into it, on top of the 1k discount. I feel in love with that gear box. It shifts beautifully and it is a joy to row. I also did not know this, and I wish Subaru made a bigger effort to sell this, but it has an auto hill braking feature. So instead of having to carefully work the gas and clutch and/or E-brake, the car AUTOMATICALLY brakes until you give it enough gas and clutch engagement on a steep hill... Whoa. Car is very straight forward inside and out. No needless frills, everything where it should be. Good quality feel. I only put 115 miles on it so far, but its been great, looks great, and rides great.

2nd Crosstrek

Subarus are generally reliable and are great for winter driving, so we will alway be a Subaru family. Loved my 2017 Crosstrek but the 2019 is even better in terms of improved technology. I think they had enough complaints about the tinny speakers in the 2017 Crosstrek and they were replaced by Harman Kardon speakers, which is what I had in my old Outback. The 6.5 in touchscreen is easier on the eyes and the backup camera too is greatly improved. Since we just survived one of the worst winters ever, I can say that this car is up to the challenge. As I was navigating a very narrow alley, I ended up momentarily stuck in a pile of snow - no problem because between the AWD and the paddle shifters, I was able to safely extricate myself. Our neighbor's RAV4 was not so lucky and remained stuck for several hours. I haven't had it long enough to test everything but the fact that it got me through the tail end of winter speaks volumes to its tenacity.

Economy Car/Crossover with AWD + Stick Shift

The Crosstrek is a great car for the money with no real competition. Other than a VW Golf Alltrack that costs several thousand dollars more, the CT checks off most of the boxes for me: AWD, Manual Transmission, Wagon or Hatchback. Yes, it could use more horsepower, have nicer luxury features, electronics, etc., but it does a good job of hauling myself and stuff around town and out of city easily. It’s not a luxury or sport/performance car...it’s a very nice compact economy car/crossover. Pros: 6-speed manual shifts well and clutch does a decent job. The rev hang is there, but I’ve gotten used to it. Leather shift knob and steering wheel on the Premium feels great and it worth the extra money over the Base model. Braking and handling is great especially for its ground clearance and all-season tires. Ride is smooth and quiet cruising at 80mph. Touch screen works well when using Apple CarPlay and the rear camera is very clear with the 6.5” display. While having a rear camera is nice, the CT has very good visibility all around compared to some other hatchbacks and CUVs that I considered. Regular E-Brake - I’m not a fan of electronic emergency brakes on some of the newer cars, so I’m glad this still has an old school one. Cons: Doors don’t lock automatically and don’t unlock when pulling handle from inside. AC isn’t that cold and air vents are poorly placed. My right hand on the steering will block the airflow from the left center vent. Front seats are fairly comfortable, but the headrests are way too hard. No temp gauge. It would be nice to have an actual temp gauge instead of just a warning light. UPDATE AUGUST 2021: I bought this car new over 2 years ago. Since it was a manual transmission car, I planned to have my kids learn how to drive stick, and keep this car for a very long time. Overall, it was a very safe car with good visibility, good ground clearance and handled reasonably well for a crossover/SUV. The stick shift models do not have eyesight, but that was okay with me since I did not want a car with too much technology that could potentially be a problem down the road after the warranty expired. Car was sometimes underpowered as expected, but still fun to drive. However, we ended up selling the car recently since the air conditioning could never cool the car very well. Our dealership replaced the o-rings and recharged the A/C, but the car would not stay very cool even when temperature was in the mid 80s in Southern California. In stop and go traffic and under any load and acceleration, the A/C would cycle off and blow air that was barely cool. Also, the car does not have rear vents, so passengers in the back seat are very uncomfortable since I cannot cool off when drive by myself even with the right side vents closed, the A/C on the coolest setting and recirculate. For anyone consider the Crosstrek, I would suggest test driving the car on a warmer day with passengers and see how the A/C fairs when accelerating, in stop-and-go traffic and on the freeway. Others owners may not have had problems with the A/C, so I may have had bad luck with my car. I really wanted to keep it long term, but having a weak A/C with a small family did not make sense living in SoCal. If we lived in a cooler region, then the car probably makes more sense since the heater and heated seats work great.

One week into ownership. Great, solid feel. Vehicle is 6 speed manual with convenience pkg. Has everything I need: a/c, pwr windows, locks. Handles great in rain so far. Quiet on highway. Recent 200 mile trip resulted in 36 mpg using cruise control at 62 mph-amazing. One issue: Android auto not working and if you google this-several other forester and impreza owners are experiencing this. Hoping dealer can remedy this soon. Overall great vehicle. 2 week update: Vehicle has excellent lower lumbar support in the seating. At 1300 miles there is slight oil consumption-which is "supposedly normal" for these vehicles. First heavy snowfall last night and vehicle performed exceptionally well. One month in update: Vehicle's fuel economy is only getting better. The stated hwy range for this vehicle is 547.9 miles. This past weekend after a fill-up the range on my dash read 1040 kms-that's 648.7 miles. This has been achieved by using cruise control. 3 month update: added 1/4 of a quart of oil at 2,000 kilometres, then at 4k. After that, engine required no further oil between 4k and 10 k-great! Radio was replaced at dealer over android auto issue-still not working. Otherwise, it's a great overall vehicle. UPDATE: This is my second Subi. Bought new, and it has been impressive. Incredibly fuel efficient with 6 speed manual. One reading I got on a full tank was 1,000 km. Amazing in snow. Put on all-weather tires just before winter, the car is stoppable. Encountered an icy hill one morning, at a 4 way stop. I had to go right. Two cars half-way up were sliding backwards. The Crosstrek chugged up the hill, effortlessly. Great road trip vehicle. Feels sturdy. Overall, tremendous value. Only been 1 issue, that dealer could not solve; android auto button is grey, never connects. Otherwise, great vehicle.

Just purchased our car at the end of the 36 month lease. It has 19000+ miles and may be worth near than the discounted purchase number. It is a strange world. I know that it is worth $7000 more than the payoff. We had planned to sell it outright and buy new but that plan is mute (there are no Crosstreks worth the price here in St. Louis). We like the car very much and my wife does not want to give it up. We know the maintenance is up to date. We had no issues when new and it has not been back to the dealer except for an oil change. I installed an oil valve that is reachable without jacking the car up and the filter is on top of the engine so I do my own oil changes now. I had an issue with gas smell in the oil last winter. This is probably due to short trips with a cold engine. I will combine trips with longer run times this winter. There is no oil temperature gauge on our premium trim, my only quibble so far.

Subaru Crosstrek: Best of the Best

If you want a car with excellent visibility, height in traffic, clearance to prevent pothole damage, consider this vehicle. You won't believe the smooth ride that Subaru has engineered in this compact SUV. My favorite parts, though, are the excellent safety features provided by Eyesight drivers' assist technology which has a high rating for crash avoidance. It monitors traffic blind spots, adapts cruise control, warns of upcoming obstacles or lane drift. It will even apply brakes should you not react in time. And don't let me forget to mention how cool navigation is with Apple CarPlay; you can run the whole system with voice commands. I appreciate features that will keep me safely driving longer, so that is why I choose the Subaru Crosstrek. I am a committed Crosstrek driver. This is an automobile that I look forward to driving and usually look for an excuse to go for a drive.

2019 Crosstrek 6speed manual

I've owned this car for about two weeks and couldn't be more pleased. I replaced a 2015 Chevrolet Colorado that was developing constant problems. The Crosstrek is really a nice car, certainly smaller than the truck. I'm six feet tall, the interior has plenty of room and the seats are comfortable. The power is fine, especially with a manual transmission, the automatic works very well, I just wanted a car with a manual. The manual transmission works smoothly, without any slop . It rides very well and isolates rough road very well. The steering is easy, and fairly quick, for electric steering it actually has some feel. I really enjoy driving it, and honestly couldn't be happier with it. I come from a family that's made it's living from GM, this is a very good car.

Con: The navigation system is bundled with the upgraded entertainment system. The Navigation is based on Tom Tom and you only get updates for 3 years. Using CarPlay you can get very similar results. The Eyesight technology is fantastic! It will save me from many potential accidents from congested traffic and poor drivers. I love the cargo space and how easy it is to load and unload. Performance around town is great.

2019 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid 4dr SUV AWD (2.0L 4cyl gas/electric hybrid CVT)

I drove a 2013 Ford C-Max Energi for six years, but wanted a PHEV with all-wheel drive and higher ground clearance. Enter the 2019 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid. On the plus side, in addition to its all-wheel drive and generous ground clearance, the Crosstrek has solid handling, and its standard Eyesight safety features work well. Yes, it could use more power, but if you push it hard enough, the Crosstrek Hybrid will still accelerate sufficiently to get out of its own way. On the negative side, I've read that Subaru quality control has suffered a bit as of late and sure enough, my Subaru has some minor examples of this. There is an annoying rattle coming from somewhere in the overhead center console and a section of blue trim on the passenger side was loose from day one until I was finally able to force it into place. Speaking of noises, the pedestrian alert warning sound is excessively loud. This was confirmed by a mechanic at the dealership I bought the car from. He claims that the sound level is adjustable, but when he tried to decrease the volume, he said it would always default back to the maximum setting and no one in the service department seems to be able to figure it out. (A side note: my wife and I test drove another 2019 Crosstrek Hybrid before buying this one and the other one was so relatively quiet that neither we nor the salesman could hear anything to speak of. If I had known ahead of time that the pedestrian alert warning was going to be this loud, that might have been a deal breaker in itself.) Since the Crosstrek is based on Subaru's entry model Impreza, it lacks certain features such as dual zone climate control, power rear hatch, rain sensing wipers, fully automatic speed sensitive door locks and ambient noise sensitive radio volume that are found in other Subaru models. At the price point of the hybrid model, it would have been helpful to at least have these features available as options if not standard equipment. Anyway, the Crosstrek Hybrid will do for now until something better comes along.

2019 Limited Crosstrek Looks and Feels a Sexy Car

Why consider this car? I compared it to the other cars of its class, but ultimately, I really enjoyed this one for some key reasons. It's Eyesight technology is top notch, and it also makes highway driving a relaxing affair to and from work. I do mostly long highway commutes with a little city driving, so MPG is also excellent. I wanted a car that I could rely on for safety and comfort, and I didn't really care about the "slow acceleration." Honestly, it's not as bad as the other reviews might make it sound. You're not going to 0-60 in 3 seconds--it might take you 7 or 8 seconds. That's not terrible--in heavier traffic on acceleration ramps, keeping up and merging into lanes has not been a problem like I initially thought. The engine noise also isn't as loud as I thought it'd be during the initial test drive. At 80MPH, I hear more road noise and air than I do the engine (barely audidle). It has a satisfying hum to it during acceleration.

I wanted a reliable car that would last forever. I bought the vase model and feel this fits my need. The downside for most is the slow acceleration. Honestly how fast do you need to go to merge. The comfort in this vehicle is amazing. I haven't noticed a blind spot. I am 5'1" tall and the ease of getting in and out of this vehicle is awesome. Not to mention the driver seat adjusts perfectly. I love this SUV and have ordered my badges. Also if you see Sula (that's her name. Sula the Subaru) say hi 😄

I had a ‘05 Forester for the past 10 years and wanted to stick with Subaru for my next car. I knew before I even visited the dealership that the crosstrek was going to be the model for me! And believe me, it has not disappointed! I’ve been driving it for about three months and currently have about 4,000 miles. I do a 66 mile round trip commute 7 or 8 times a week and I still get excited to drive it! I specifically requested a manual transmission, I have been 100% happy with my decision. It’s worth noting that with the manual you will miss out on the eyesight technology, which I’ve driven with before and didn’t feel it was a necessity for me. I would much rather save the $1000+ on the final price tag. Overall this small SUV is comfy, much more spacious than you’d think, and the cargo area is less than my Forester but still gets the job done! I love how it handles in the rain and snow as well as the grip you feel taking curves at highway speeds. The brakes have already been a life saver when a confused deer ran out in front of me - I was able to come to a dead stop from ~30mph while it stood inches from my bumper. That experience just added to the already high level of safety I feel in my crosstrek. One less important feature that I absolutely love...the orange stitching on the black interior and steering wheel! I actually really love how the stitching feels on the leather steering wheel, I had no idea how much something like that could contribute to the comfort of driving, but it does! Another perk that sold me is the 1500lb towing capacity, I needed something I could hitch a small trailer to for transporting my motorcycle. The only CONS I can think of would be lack of interior compartments for the driver. I would’ve loved to have a designated place to keep my sunglasses! And I was told the premium model didn’t have an option for a moon roof which I admit was a little disappointing.

2019 Crosstrek, best daily you can have

To start I have owned two Subaru's before this. The first was a 92 legacy wagon and the second was a 2000 Legacy wagon. In the past few year I have gotten into working and owning my fun car from the Italian car market and loved it. My daily was a BMW 325xi Dinan and it did great. I missed my Subaru and the places it could take me. I settled on selling my daily and buying the Crosstrek thinking I would just dip my toe into the market again. I leased it and within two days knew I was going to own it after the lease. This car does it all, like most Subaru's do, and it cant be stopped. I am still acitiavly looking for a situation that I cant get out of. The daily road mileage is excellent and the off-road capability is outstanding.

This is the last car of my life and I could not have made a better decision. The safety features of this car will not only keep me safe but has made me a safer driver. So I expect to grow into all of the navigation and entertainment features as life goes on and on and on. I was extremely pleased with Charles, my salesperson. He was knowledgable and helpful without being overwhelming. I could not have asked for a better experience.

Good but not great

Note that I traded in my late model Escape for the Subaru. The Crosstrek is a peppy, smart-looking, car with a lot going for it. It does fall a bit short in other ways, though. First the pluses. The look is great, and the off-road manners make it easy to forget I'm not in my Jeep Wrangler or F-150. It really handles the trails and ruts with ease. On the road, the Crosstrek feels a bit light, with a very tight steering that takes a bit of getting used to. It wanders a bit in the lane and is easily influenced by road surface with an unexpected pull to the left or right rather often. No oversteer or understeer in turns, however. Engine is capable, though not strong and with the CVT, doesn't struggle to find shift points like a standard automatic transmission. Brakes are great and leave you feeling the car is glued to the road. No chassis lean in turns either. The interior is rather spartan, typical for this price point. Controls are good old knobs and switches, easy to operate and less likely to fail. The touch screen offers google auto, something that fails to link as often as not. Radio cannot be turned off and when the car is restarted, it welcomes you at whatever volume it was set to last. The only fix is to set volume to zero. Handles mounted to the ceiling for entry and exit are angled almost horizontally leaving me to wonder if they will fail with heavy use. Lane departure warnings often warn you when traversing tarred cracks in the roadway and can prove annoying on winding roads where you may cut turns a bit. My Ford Escape, albeit pricier, felt heavier, more substantial and built with more solidity. Closing the doors on the Suburu don't give that tight thud, more of a hollow sound. Open the window and squeeze the outer and inner door panels together. They bend very easily leaving a cheap feeling. The Honda HRV was even worse. That's the low price point again. All in all, I'm happy with the Subaru. It's a very inexpensive car which tries to hide that in many ways and succeeds in most.

Great small suv

This is a great small suv to own. Takes a little while to get used to the safety features and most of them you can turn off. We went on a 600 mile round trip across I-80 in Pennsylvania to State College and back to home in Erie. It is not a real quiet ride on highway but you get used to noise . Took me a little bit to get used to the car as I went from driving a pick up truck or my wives Sant Fe Turbo. Suv. Only been 3 months since I bought my Cross Trek. Fun car to drive in city .The Crosstrek is sluggish on take off but again you get used to it. On Highway driving the speed limit had little problem with it not passing or changing lanes. We had no problem with comfort with the seating but we are not tall people 5'7" and 5'4" I would recommend buy this car if looking for a small suv. Went from 12 to 14 mpg. to 29 mpg.

I test drove 6 or 7 other SUV's before buying this 2019 Crosstrek. The Crosstrek I bought was a used loaner at a dealership. I've never owned an SUV before, only a few sedans. My last car was a Lexus, and it was 15 years old when I traded it in. I've owned my Crosstrek for 8 months now. The 'pros' are that it feels strong and I like the AWD. I've never had a car with AWD before and I notice a difference. I can take turns faster, it feels sporty to drive. I got up to 80mph on the hwy the other day and it didn't feel like I was going fast at all - the car drove smooth at 80mph. The car feels strong to me. Maybe my 2004 Lexus was not in the best shape.. It was a 6 cylinder. This Crosstrek feels like it has way more pickup. I don't feel the lag in accelerating that other people talk about; however, it is a little noisy when accelerating, but to me that feels sporty now. It feels like they put a V6 in my car, but this is all on flat ground. I've taken it off road a bunch of times (and yes I tried to drive my sedan/lexus off road on some sand, so I have something to compare this too). I feel a major difference. The crosstrek has no issues at all driving through heavy sand (not on the beach, but dirt roads that have loose sand about 6 inches deep. What use to make my car fishtail is now a breeze in the Crosstrek, and I'm looking forward to taking it on some more rugged roads. Cons: It took me a while to get use to the CVT engine. At first the car felt chuggy at low speeds. Now I'm either not paying attention to that or I learned to trust the car (that there's nothing wrong with it), so it doesn't bother me anymore. I did take it to the dealer a few times to ask them if the jerkiness was normal, and they test drove it with me and confirmed it's normal. I also test drove another Crosstrek and it did the same thing. I recently rented a car with automatic transmission (while traveling) and I do miss the shifting of the automatic transmission (I miss the control I feel with the shifting, the sound, and that type of engine overall), but the Crosstrek handles so much better. The other issue is that the base model doesn't come with a headlight indicator on the dashboard, which is a problem for me - but I'm dealing with it. Overall though it's much more reliable than my old car that I traded in, and it's much newer and probably safer.

We bought our 1st Crosstrek in 2017. We noticed a persistent coolant smell almost immediately. No leaks were apparent. Just that smell inside and outside the car. The dealer could never figure it out. A month or so after owning it, a thumping sound started in the front end. Could actually be felt under the floor by a passenger. Dealer could not replicate or resolve. The final straw was the day I could no longer shift it out of Park. The dealer gave us a GREAT deal on a 2019 - first on their lot. So we decided to take a chance. Could be we bought a lemon. Well - the 2019 has had constant issues too. First it was a rattling noise in the front end - 3 visits and no resolution. Then the rear wheel bearings had to be replaced (at 15,000 miles). Radio stops working intermittently. Subaru has agreed to replace the radio, but only after I could document on video. That's surprisingly hard to do for a person who almost always drives alone. So basically, I want to go back to Honda ASAP. Never again with Subaru.

I have the 2019 Crosstrek Premium Limited - leather, premium sound, moonroof, heated seats, EyeSight, etc. It was to be my 3rd Subaru after owning a 2002 Subaru Outback Wagon and 92 Legacy Wagon - and my 1st NEW one. Immediately, it had problems with the radio not being able to remember presets and forgetting the radio stations, as if you disconnected the battery. Annoying considering I paid for premium sound. Issue after two Subaru visits: Faulty Radio Unit with open circuit. Solution: RADIO REPLACED under warranty. Next Issue: Started having rubbing noise at highway speed - like 8,000 miles if that. At 13,000 I brought it in for the 3rd time (friction while turning left, cyclical noise) and was told I need a NEW TRANSMISSION. Yes, this is a CVT paddle shifters. TRANSMISSION REPLACED under warranty. Now at 18,000, the noise is back and on my weekend road trip, the NEW TRANSMISSION OVERHEATED, twice while climbing two different mountain passes on the highway! Had to pull over to let it cool as if I'm driving a VW Bus. It is now back at Subaru again and was told it needs a NEW TRANSMISSION COOLER (kinda like a radiator). 3rd Major Repair, none of which ever hit MySubaru.com's page, but I confirmed they do report to CarFax, so if discovered, this repair history will decrease my resale value! And just FYI, no they don't extend your warranty when they replace a major part so the new transmission would have 36k less the 13k I already put on the car if I hadn't upped the warranty from the very beginning. Buyer beware. Immediately, as soon as I could figure out how, I disabled the "safety" feature that pulls at your steering when you change lanes without signaling. Also turned off annoying chime that constantly flashes and blinks at you from dash. All these features assume a person cannot drive. They're unnecessary. I wish Subaru put more money into the POWER of the car - it's unpowered and I wish it had more. It's not as roomy as my Outback and requires a different accessory at a few hundred dollars each for every different sport - bike, kayak, skiis/snowboards. The interior is only available in BLACK. STUPID. HOT as hell in the Summer. Always dreamed of cream interior, esp. for my yellow dog (Have you ever seen a black dog in a Subaru commercial? No, they're Golden Retrievers). Subaru stupidly put rubber everywhere except that there's still the carpet that holds dog hair on the back of the rear seat at the edges so it's still impossible to get 100% clean. Forget sleeping/camping out in the back with the seats folded in a pinch. The bottom half of the rear seats don't fold forward so the back isn't totally flat and has so many rubber corrugated folds and edges that it'd be uncomfortable, even if you were short enough. The rear light in the very back is a joke and doesn't light anything; you may as well have to hold a flashlight - also STUPID and very poorly designed (How much would a light cost them, really?). Only has ventilation in the front - so your dog won't breathe AC. Has weird aerodynamics such that you have to roll down the back windows same as the front, otherwise you get the WHA, WHA, WHA noise from the design. I don't agree with others on the steering wheel or dash layout, I think the top middle panel is easiest to read and you can set them both to read different things - keep my temp gauges where I can see them - but the heating controls require you to turn three different knobs to set it to what you want, which is a worse design than models in the early 2000's. I do agree that some of these annoyances are not things noticed on a test drive. Keyless entry only works on the front doors, so you have to manually push the button second to unlock the rest. Your buttons on the inside of the door don't light up unless the car is on with headlights on, which it never is when you're getting in, so hard to find the unlock button and passengers get annoyed waiting. Should have been designed to light buttons when the doors are opened with the ceiling light. Subaru's solution to my unhappiness with how many issues I've had was to try to convince me to buy an Outback increasing my payments by $50/mo and going another year on payments. Really disappointed. Sadly cannot recommend.

We ordered our Hybrid (PHEV), and it took about 3 months to get it in but it is so worth the wait! We are running about 45mpg in Hybrid mode trying to keep the battery charged every night. I love the flexibility to run in full electric mode when off-roading, so we run in “save mode” until we hit the trail start. The silence is bliss when all the Wranglers drive up and try to laugh at our e-Subie, but we end up nice and cool at the end with a MUCH more comfy ride than them. I’m thrilled with the top trim on this as the interior is really nice inside. The blue stitching on the hybrid looks sweet, and it’s extremely comfy on long rides. It’s our first Subaru, and we are so excited that they are committing to building more electric and hybrids in the future! Go Subie!!

2019 for a 100 mile/day commute

I'm 4500 miles into owning a 2019 Ice Silver Metallic Premium edition Crosstrec and I just love it. I went to the dealership to look at the Foresters, and was impressed by three models: Outback, Forester and the Crosstrec. After just ten minutes of looking at all three I found myself content with the Crosstrec. I was here to buy a commuter vehicle with AWD capability. I took a 2-3 mile test drive and was happy with the car. I came back a week later and left with it. I am averaging 34.0 mpg. I've found that the vehicle is adequately powered and have not had any incidents where it felt underpowered, contrary to all the reviews. I put no money down and financed with Subaru 3% money for 5 years, and the monthly savings in fuel from driving my 13 mpg Silverado covers the $450 payment. I could not be happier with the Crosstrec.

I recently purchased a 2019 Crosstrek and have to say, I'm kind of regretting it. Not only does the transmission lag horribly, The car is extremely underpowered. When going up a hill, it struggles to get out of its own way. It makes lots of noise and almost lugs into its next gear. Then, the steering. I think my car is messed up. I've taken it to the dealer to have it checked out. I've driven other crosstreks, and I still think something is wrong. But they say, "That's just how it drives." It over steers horribly. I feel like I have to keep fighting to keep my car centered in the lane. I also feel like when I turn the wheel, the car never tries to center, it's either left or right or left again, but never center. I feel like I'm driving an old truck with worn out steering except it's kind of the opposite. Whatever it is, it sucks. I drive a lot and this car makes it difficult. What else stinks? The seats are pretty darn uncomfortable. I'm not a heavy person, But these seats hurt my tushy. What do I like? It's nimble. It's hopefully good in snow. It's good on gas and it's cheap. But, if I had to do it again, I'd find something else.

Ok, every vehicle has its own set standards to what a consumer thinks is good and bad. I had a 2013 GMC Terrain i traded in to get my Crosstrek. I went with Subaru because i always wanted one. First, this car is going to get you anywhere you want to go, whether that be off road, in deep snow, or daily driver. Second, this car dose not have the most power, but handles very well and performs just fine. Third, people complain about the transmission being choppy or sluggish. Yes, there seem to bee some sort of choppiness, but that is how the transmission is set up to give you maximum fuel efficiency. the way the transmission people talk about is nothing like you expect, its really not big deal and other cvt transmissions do the same thing. Fourth, people complain how Subaru's are loud. Yes, they are louder to because they are lower and closer to you for better handling, plus the pistons are going side to side rather than up and down (Boxer engine). Fifth, i think the infotainment center is ok, but i'm not expecting it to make me coffee (yet). Last, road noise is not that big of an issue. Every newer car has road noise. If you don't want road noise than go buy a Lincoln. Overall, this car is perfect for me as someone who enjoys the outdoors, daily driver, and family needs.

Nice car to drive, handles well and has adequate power. Big plus is average mileage over first 300 miles--42mpg for an all-wheel drive car on regular gas! Our model is nicely equipped. Hybrid system and battery come with an 8 year or 100,000 mi warranty from Subaru, the standard drivetrain is warranted 50k, the rest 36k. Subaru is making these cars in very limited quantity until buyer interest is engaged.

Horrible handling at speed

It's only redeeming quality is the mileage, averaging at 33mpg. Otherwise, I will not be a Subaru repeat owner. At highway speeds in crosswinds (mild), it is the worst handling car I've ever owned bar none. It will shift a foot or two left or right especially when the roads are slightly crowned. It feels as though the tires are flat, if you know the feeling. The seats are very uncomfortable, I ended up buying a seat cushion to put over top the drivers side. The wipers - no one offered them in stores initially so I ended up having to buy online thru Amzn. The interior light will stay on all night if you make that little mistake as you're exiting and so has no auto shutoff - for a car that has just about all electronic control; Subaru could do better. The radio requires CONSTANT reset to factory default. Forget about Apple carplay working consistently. Why is the engine so loud and rattle on cold days after starting? Loud noise = wear until it warms up, take it from a mechanical engineer. Latest issue is the Xmode grinding noise, I'm told that rocks somehow end up in a tight clearance area on the front end but haven't been to the dealer yet. Beware of Subaru apologists, they're out there and will have an excuse for all of these. Just think for yourself.

Great car with a horrible transmission. Those CVT's are dropping like flys, failing as soon a 70K, my 2014 Impreza made it to 115k before it quit, Subaru extended the warranty on their CVT's to 100k which did not help me. This will be my last car with a CVT.

A few problems that are hard to overlook

A new Subaru owner but I've driven a number of different brands /models of cars in the past. I settled on a Crosstrek because I liked the overall look and price point. When you test drive a car it's hard to get a true feel for things that might bother you in long term, and those are the things I've started to notice and will address here. First, cabin noise from the engine: I actually noticed this somewhat on test drives, but didn't get a full appreciation of how annoying this would be on longer commutes. Whenever you press the gas and you're going up any kind of hill (small or large) you hear this low volume but noticeable groan from the engine. Probably a result from the Crosstrek being underpowered but it's something I definitely noticed over other similar cars I test drove. Speaking on engine: I bought an automatic and while it seemed fine on test drives I've started to noticed that the shifting is choppy/hiccupy at times - I notice this on a daily basis. I don't know if this is something that can be remedied by a mechanic but it's noticeable compared to other cars in its class. Now onto the interior, specially the electronics/entertainment systems. In one word: a mess. It feels like Subaru gave little thought to the layouts and just kept adding stuff wherever they could find space. There are three (three!) different locations to get data about your vehicle: the display in front of your steering wheel, the small screen to the right of your steering wheel, and a third small display further up on the dash. There is absolutely no need for this third display that can't be handled by the other two. It clutters the dash, and just makes what should be a clean streamlined electronics/entertainment display into a poorly designed mess. The controls on the steering don't make sense either: for instance, the "info" button clustered with the phone/music controls has nothing to do with the phone or music - it displays information related to gas mileage etc. Why? This whole setup is a black eye for Subaru. In a day when most if not all car manufacturers put thought into the user experience, Subaru's electronics display looks and feels like something on a first generation vehicle from 2008. This is my first Subaru, and very well may be last if they can't get it together and make a reasonably functioning electronics/entertainment setup. I'll give it another year: either I'll get used to this car's pitfalls or I'll trade it in for something that makes more sense. Given all the accolades you hear about Subarus this has been very disappointing (and surprising on a model that is essentially the same since it's debut in 2013)

Unsafe to Drive

We decided to purchase a 2019 Subaru Crosstrek based upon its best in class rating by a nationally recognized nonprofit consumer organization and an above average review by Edmonds. Now that we have driven our Crosstrek Limited just over 1,000 miles and we have grown to regret our decision. In short, the Crosstrek Limited is a good car mechanically, uncomfortable to ride in, and equipped with EyeSight Driver Assist Technology - a dangerous technology. So, if you still want a Crosstrek - avoid the top of the line Limited model. We chose a Crosstrek Limited because it has 18-inch alloy wheels, an automatic climate control system, and leather-trimmed upholstery that are not available on the other Crosstrek models. The Crosstrek is great in the snow, has adequate acceleration, and handles tight curves well. However, I am six feet tall and weigh about 170 pounds and find the Crosstrek’s seats to be uncomfortably hard and leg room limited. It is fine for taking the kids to school or heading to the store for groceries but forget about it if you are going to be driving for over 45 minutes at a time. Then there is the Crosstrek Limited’s EyeSight Driver Assist Technology that includes a Pre-Collision Braking System and Adaptive Cruise Control. The Subaru manuals make it clear that, “EyeSight is a driver assist technology, which may not operate optimally under all driving conditions.” And goes on to state that, “The driver is always responsible for safe and attentive driving. System effectiveness depends on many factors such as vehicle maintenance, weather and road conditions.” To emphasize the fact, Subaru has committed nearly 45% of the EyeSight’s 113-page manual to warnings and notices about the limitations and dangers associated with using the system. Unfortunately, the driver is left to figure out what weather and road conditions are less that optimal. And even under ideal conditions we have found the EyeSight system to be unpredictable and difficult to override manually resulting in dangerous driving conditions. Cases in point, on three occasions Eyesight’s Pre-Collision Braking Assist system detected obstacles along the curb - a tree, a garbage can, and a parked car - and assumed that they represented high risks for a collision and activated the automatic braking system –- all while driving at 35 miles per hour on a bright overcast day. In one instance, we were nearly rear-ended by the car behind whose driver had not anticipated that we would come to an abrupt and unnecessary stop on an open road to avoid hitting a tree. Then there is Adaptive Cruise Control combined with the Pre-Collision Braking - another unsafe feature. Nearly 40% of the text covering Adaptive Cruise Control in the EyeSight manual consists of warnings, cautions, and discussions of the limitations of the advanced cruise control system and for good reason. When activated, Adaptive Cruise Control functions as a smart cruise control and regulates vehicle speed in order to maintain a "safe following distance" from the vehicle ahead. In addition, it activates automatic braking “when needed” - when the following distance from the vehicle ahead becomes to small and/or the system sees break lights on the vehicle ahead. Unfortunately, when needed is when the technology thinks it is needed - not when the driver thinks they need to slow down or stop. The result is aggressive and unnecessary high speed breaking for cars that change lanes and tap their breaks in front of you or gently apply their breaks to slow when entering a highway exit. And once the perceived danger gone the system is slow to recover cruising speed. The result, abrupt and unnecessary slowing of the vehicle on the highway and the risk of a rear-end collisions. It has now happened to us on two occasions – once when a vehicle taped their breaks while changing lanes in front of us and once when a vehicle tapped its breaks to slow down while entering an exit off ramp. Fortunately, the vehicles behind us have been able to slow or swerve to avoid a collision. We have been unable to find a way to permanently disable EyeSight. By default, the Pre-Collision Breaking System turns on when you start the car and must be disabled manually once the engine is running. Adaptive Cruise Control is the default cruise control. However Conventional Cruise Control can replace Adaptive Cruise Control once Adaptive Cruise Control is activated by pressing and holding two separate buttons on the steering wheel for approximately two seconds or longer, a distraction from watching the road if the vehicle is moving when you want to engage the conventional cruise control. No, we are not happy with our 2019 Subaru Crosstrek Limited and recommend that others avoid purchasing the vehicle.

Lacking in size, comfort and MPG

I am a Subaru gal; I had my 2011 Outback for 9 years..I thought I would go smaller with the Limite Crosstrek '19 to save on gas; My 2011 exceeded the MPG on nearly every trip; I was never able to get over 25.4 MPG. Unacceptable. The engine is very weak and this is from someone who drives like a grandma. I had to floor it to get any umph to enter a freeway or pass another car. The car also had a significant "roll" to it around corners. It was enough to make me go even slower than posted speed to feel comfortable cornering. The front driver's seat was very uncomfortable and stiff. The cargo space was too small for even a decent grocery trip. I traded it it last week for a '22 Outback and I am a happy Subaru owner again.

Incredibly Uncomfortable

We own an automobile in order to get from one point to another comfortably, safely, and reliably. After owning our 2019 Subaru Crosstrek 2.0i Limited for six months we can report that the vehicle meets two of our three expectations - safety and reliability as expected for a vehicle with less than 5,000 miles on its odometer. Unfortunately, it is incredibly uncomfortable to ride in. The front driver and passenger seats are poorly designed - hard and the back rests uncomfortable. Driver side legroom is at a premium resulting in the operator’s right knee being jammed into the sharp edges of center console. The left knee bangs into the armrest below the window controls. The steering wheel is hard and has a small diameter. And because of the constant battle between the driver and the EyeSight systems Lane Keep Assist feature the wheel must be firmly grasped at all times. Lane Keep Assist, “… assists the steering operation by working with the electric power steering to help keep your vehicle in its lane when driving on expressways, freeways and interstate highways.” In other words, the car tries to steer itself and the driver is required to constantly override the system. As a result, when we drive for more than one-half hour, we have pains that run from the small of our backs, up our spines, and across our shoulders. On the other hand, the Crosstrek handles well and has adequate acceleration for highway driving. It does extremely well in snow. Its interior is ok but we could do without the orange stitching on its black leather seats. Then there is the Starlink technology that is a distraction and constantly struggles with the driver for control while driving. No, we do not recommend purchasing a Crosstrek.

2019 Crosstrek--dissappointed

We bought a manual transmission 2019 Crosstrek last August. As previous Subaru owners this seemed like the perfect car in terms of size and reliability. Several weeks ago (car was 6 months old at that point) the oil light came on which totally surprised me since all the scheduled oil changes had been done. The local mechanic we go to checked it, did oil change, and suggested calling Subaru dealer right away. Oil had been down close to two quarts. Service dept. at Subaru dealer immediately switched to mode of saying if there was a problem with the vehicle, we should contact the manufacturer and they'd found nothing wrong with the car. It had burned oil because, well, it'd been winter in MInnesota. After speaking with two service reps who basically gave the same pat answers "talk to Subaru" I contacted the service manager who immediately went into same mantra and even sent me images of pages from the service manual about "extreme weather." and said to contact Subaru. That dealer is Subaru to me as the buyer. They sold me the car and they sold me the car in Minnesota.

There are currently 3 recalls on this vehicle, one where the car may loses power steering, and one where the engine may fail because of poor software/firmware. There is also a class action lawsuit pending against Subaru because the front windshields are prone to chipping and cracking, and there is an extra $1-2K to get the cameras re-aligned when this happens. Speaking of poor software, the radio loses it presets and bluetooth config on a regular basis, and their Magelan map app included with the car, is poorly designed and sluggish. I turn off the lane assist because it feels like I'm constantly fighting the vehicle. I bought the car new and purchased mud and snow tires, they put the MS tires on, but kept the original tires (that I had paid for). I had to call the dealer and tell them I wanted my tires back. Also their claims of 29-33MPG highway are way off. I get just over 20MPG on my commute to work which is 99% highway. IMO overpriced piece of junk. If I could give them the car back and get my money back, I would be a happy camper. They asked me to update my review. I'll just add that the Subaru Starlink is awful. I liked the feature of being able to unlock my car from the app, but then when I tried, my subscription had expired. I tried renewing from the app, and I got the $99 a year flavor, but it still would not let me unlock my car, so I tried upgrading to the $149 flavor, but the app would not let me. I then called their support and after 20 minutes on the phone, I got it upgraded which charged me $149. It also left an additional charge for $149 and $99 for over a week until it was finally removed as the person on the phone was not showing the additional charges that were showing on my bank account. If I could give this car zero stars or negative, I would. The poor craftsmanship also spills over into their Starlink app. Not a fan of Subaru products.

Limited , AWD, and comes with every safety feature you could possibly need. Ride is fantastic, car is well made, quite in city and highway. With a full tank of gas , driving distance shows 531 miles. That's halfway to Dallas from NC ! Never thought I would like a Subaru , but they proved me wrong and I am glad they did.

I like many things about this car, BUT, today it took two Subaru sales people almost an hour to figure out how to change the time to daylight savings time. The manual was incomprehensible to me, but I tried to follow it for a half hour and then gave up. I then took the car to the dealer from whom I had leased it. A salesman said that I was right about the manual, but "No problem," he would do it for me and show me how to do it. Twenty minutes later, he gave up and asked another salesman to try. That fellow succeeded, but only after another 20 minutes of fooling around. It took two supposedly knowledgeable people FORTY MINUTES (and two separate screens/systems) to move the car clock ahead one hour! How is it possible for a big company to make a simple operation--one that every US driver has to do twice a year--so difficult? And how is it that that same company cannot hire a writer that can explain the EIGHT steps necessary in plain English?

We're both female, one is 5'6" and @130ish lbs and the other is 5'4" and w/in normal weight range. This seems to be key to evaluating reviews. Prior cars over the last couple decades: 1. 1996 Subaru Impreza Outback that had 150K mi. 2. 1996 Subaru Legacy again about 150k mi. 3. 2004 Subaru Impreza ten years old w/@110k mi. 4. 2013 Hyundai Elantra LTD - sold w/under 23k mi. @5 yrs (yeck). 5. 2014 Kia Soul still have it @34k mi. 6. The Crosstrek in this review. NOTE: All our Subarus maintained a great resale value. The Hyundai value plummeted and was a "high-end" model. Likes: sturdy, road height, comfortable (no need for lumbar support), many reviews complained about road noise but my spouse (who hears really well) has no problem, heated seats, manual (not electronic) seat adjustment. There's a dashboard display that shows what door (incld. hatch) is not closed and this comes in very handy (great feature). The acceleration per many other reviews isn't positive. But with 152 HP (on Impreza base) there's absolutely no problem getting on major roads in PA/NJ/NY from a complete stop. After almost getting in an accident on Rt 22 (major traffic) the pickup is what kept me from getting hit. 2004 Impreza had @167 HP and had better pickup but I never needed it and that was on roads/highways just outside NYC. Cruise control is the best I've used. It has useful bells and whistles I've never seen before (like setting # of car lengths to maintain between car in front). Dislikes: There's an automatic override to avoid a crash based on the car's computer and with @3-4 car lengths in front of us, the "alarm" beeped saying we were too close to the car in front came on. I WASN'T DRIVING so was able to safely watch everything. THE CAR STOPPED EARLY and stunned us. We were driving @30 mpg and had plenty of distance with the care in front. IT SHOULDN'T HAVE STOPPED. This is a problem. Overkill in computerized displays (fixed in the 2020 model). The engine temperature display was replaced w/an idiot light & I hate it. The sound system is subpar; my 2013 Elantra had better sound. The vents for air flow don't have a decent direction control. It seems like the car was made for men - taller than 5'6" because I can't get the vent to blow on me w/out shutting it off (ludicrous design); "normal vent control" have plastic "knobs" you can move directionally. A couple vents on the CT have vertical controls so it's easy to turn it down completely and that turns it off. The owner manuals are horrible. 3 CT models are jammed in the manual w/out telling you what model has each feature. Subaru cost cutting and they could have one generic document with addendum(s) specific to your model. So, the lack of document clarity, like replacing functional dash gauges w/idiot lights, saves Subaru money. We have EyeSight and paid $2395 for it in the Premium model. DON'T BUY THE WARRANTY for EyeSight - that's a rip. There are more blindspots in this car than anything we've owned. But EyeSight, at our age, comes in handy. It tells you a lot; you learn to ignore some. It does make a sound and dashboard or side mirrors blink when people are walking in back of the car (handy feature when turning my neck fully is an issue), my spouse had the auto-brake come on a fraction of a second before she was going to brake. She saw four bottles of water in glass 1 gal. jugs fly up in the trunk. One broke on landing - that's how hard the auto-braking was. She's glad for this feature (it worked properly the first time not the second). For older folks, I now recommend getting it. Hate the Starlink feed because it's invasive with data being transferred back to Subaru (including the location in case the car's stolen and it's not on the list of cars that are stolen). The feature's included with the car but at a subscription price. Canceled after trial period. We never had problems w/paint chipping in any of the prior 3 Subs. and we lived just outside NYC but the CT (w/less than 6 months & under 3k mi. when called it in) is chipping to bare metal. I took it to a new service center. Service was thorough and took photos all around the car. The fellow from service said the Pearl Red (our car) and Orange Crosstreks were ID'd as having paint chipping issues. Subaru of America is allowing the car to be repainted under warranty. This may well be our last Subaru simply due to our age. If we want another car, it'll be a Subaru. We had a new RAV4 (killed our backs), a used 1999 Honda CRV (junk), and the car brand that's consistently above all the rest are the Subarus. The CT is the best of the Legacy, Impreza, and Impreza Outback.

I drove Volkswagen Golf and more recently three GTI models for the past twenty years, but I needed something I felt more confident in driving to primitive trail-heads with poor "roads" along with recent back issues that weren't being helped by trying to get down and out of the GTI. The two vehicles are obviously not the same with the GTI having a more aggressive/responsive engine, but both are similar with passenger and cargo room (GTI has more cargo room in its trunk with the seats up, but Crosstrek favors more passenger room in the backseat with the seats up). I found the seats comfortable, but would love to have a slightly more "squishy" leather steering wheel like the GTI vs the harder leather of the Crosstrek. The heated seats are excellent. Steering responsiveness and radius are very good even compared to a more performance-oriented vehicle like the GTI. The engine took me a long time ot get used to. The GTI has a dual-clutch AT while the Crosstrek uses the CVT which feels more "rubber-bandy". I also learned over time to be more aggressive with the accelerator on the Crosstrek if you wanted any kind of acceleration, which I rarely had to do with the GTI, although I do like the immediacy of Crosstrek acceleration compared to the wait for the GTI turbo to spin up. I also had to get used to the softer suspension, what felt was a bouncing/swaying of the vehicle. It rides very comfortably, with a slightly quieter cabin, although the side-view mirrors will make plenty of wind-noise. A huge advantage of the Crosstrek compared to the GTI are the reduction of blind spots. The side-view mirrors are much larger allowing you to see more, and the rear windows allow you to see much more. With the blind-spot monitoring feature, I don't have to do quite as much neck-craning to change lanes as I used to in the GTI. I love the eyesight features, especially the adaptive cruise control. I use cruise control A LOT, and I find this works well for the vehicle. Occasionally it is overly-cautious on vehicles turning out of the lane or turning off of the road and will brake more aggressively because it thinks it still sees a vehicle in its path when it is obvious the vehicle in front is no longer a threat to a human eye. For a non-performance vehicle, I find the braking is VERY good and substantial. The headlights are EXCELLENT. I used to ride many country back-roads with my brights on, but even the low beams on the Crosstrek throw far and wide. Some annoying quibbles that could easily be fixed with a software update is the vehicle requires you to manually press the door lock button to lock and unlock the doors, unlike many other vehicles that automatically lock the door when you go above 10 MPH and unlock the doors automatically when you put the vehicle in park. Another issue is the sunroof has no glare reduction mesh-screen like the GTI, so if you wanted to cruise with the sunroof open, sunlight beams directly into the car. A mesh-screen you can manually open and close would be more appreciated than the solid ceiling cover that you engage when the sunroof is closed. I would have loved to get the hybrid, but they wouldn't get me one in the state of purchase. After seven months and about 12,000 miles, I am happy with the vehicle.

Subaru Crosstrek Limited Uncomfortable to Drive

Our 2019 Subaru Crosstrek is now four years old and has experienced no mechanical problems. The car’s EyeSight Driver Assist, Steering Responsive Headlights, Blind-Spot Detection, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, and Reverse Automatic Braking are great. We are consistently getting 37 MPG plus on the highway. Its Pre-Collision Braking, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Departure and Sway Warning with Lane Keep Assist, and Pre-Collision Throttle Management have proven to be extremely valuable and have contributed to our safe driving. The only thing we do not like is the lack of insulation in the roof that makes the interior of the vehicle noisy when it rains. Overall, it has proven itself to be a great car but not luxury automobile.

I am a (not so) proud owner of a ‘19 Crosstrek. Started out as a great starter car. However after driving it for a while I noticed a collection of issues. First off, going uphill seems to be a no-go for this car. Any type of incline and it struggles, which, as someone who drives in Upstate NY, is annoying. The Lane Assist and Eye Sight technology are unsafe “safety” features, and there is no way to turn it off. I’ve been veered off into lanes of traffic. 0/10 recommend this vehicle and after 6 months can’t wait to get rid of it.

I've owned 4 Subaru vehicles including a 2014 Crosstrek that I really enjoyed, however, I hate my 2019 Crosstrek! Do yourself a huge favor before buying this car and make sure to do two things. One, test drive this car at 70-80 MPH on the highway. It is LOUD. Wind noise, road noise, ENGINE noise... All very obnoxious and requires you to turn the radio up very loud to attempt to drown out. Second thing you should do is test drive all comparable vehicles in the same class and price range. My guess is that you will not land on the Crosstrek as your choice if you drive what else is out there and I really wish I would have. My mistake was thinking this 2019 would be exactly like my 2014... It isnt. They clearly cut corners and removed features to drive down costs and raise profits on these cars because they knew they were selling like hot cakes. I'm so disappointed with Subaru that despite this bing my fourth, it will certainly be my last! Shame on you Subaru. My mistake was assuming this would be exactly the same as my 2014... It is not. PROS: Subaru awd, nice looking interior, suspension does well with BIG bumps in the road. CONS: Engine noise, road and tire noise, wind noise, wipers are noisy even on brand new car ! You feel every bump in the road and hear it. The steering is numb yet a bit twitchy. Brakes are not sufficient under heavy breaking conditions. Car gets blown all over the road in windy conditions and when passing semi trucks!! Doors never want to shut all the way without being slammed or pushed the rest of the way shut, especially the hatch! After one week I had trim on the door coming off!! GAS MILEAGE is very dissappointing! There's cars with nearly 100 more horsepower that get the same mileage. Acceleration is very poor as well. It being so badly under powered is likely the reason for poor fuel economy. Bottom line: For the money , in the same class and with the same or better features, there are better cars out there. Go drive them! UPDATE:. Hated the car so much I traded it in after only a few months. So much happier now.

The worst car that i've ever had

William George, 10/25/2019

This is easily the worst car that I've ever had. Lets start with the visibility. This is the most important feature of a car to me for safety reasons, as this car is an accident waiting to happen. The slope of the windshield is so extreme that it gives a claustrophobic feeling. If you are short, the seat must be adjusted to a high position to see over the dash. This results in having your eyes almost looking into the sun visor, instead of straight ahead. The A pillars are thick and long to compensate for the sloped windshield, so side visibility is terrible. Headroom is poor, as is rearward visibility through the back window. The engine is loud, even under slow acceleration, and feels strained even at city driving speeds. Back seat and cargo room is sparse as well. I would recommend to anyone considering this death trap to look elsewhere, as I wish that I had done instead of staying with Subaru for their former great design and reliability. Anything offered by the competition has to be an improvement.

I test drove a few SUV's before buying this 2019 Crosstrek. The Crosstrek I bought was a loaner at a dealership for up to 7,000 miles so I'm not sure my exact car reflects this model overall. It was sold to me certified pre-owned so that helps. I've never owned an SUV before, only a few sedans. My last car was a Lexus, and it was 15 years old when I traded it in. I've owned my Crosstrek for a month now. The pros are that it feels strong and I like the AWD. I don't feel the lag in accelerating that other people talk about. It feels like they put a V6 in my car, but this is all on flat ground. I've taken it off road a few times on bumpy dirt roads (sandy, but packed sand/gravel/grass). It handles great. Cons: The CVT engine is making me crazy. I am starting to get use to it, but it definitely chugs at low speeds - a lot. The chugging goes away after 50 mph. It seems to be worse in the heat. It doesn't do it all the time. Also, I feel every, single, bump in the road - lower speeds (this is worse than the CVT engine). I feel bumps that I can't even see. It's not smooth at all, I'm being tossed around a bit. I think it's because the car is lighter than my Lexus was. I'm not sure if it's the engine chugging or what it is. I was told that it's a tight suspension, and this is normal for the Crosstrek. After driving a Lexus sedan for 8 years, I'm trying to stay open minded. The other issue is that the base model doesn't come with a headlight indicator on the dashboard. I have no idea why they would purposely leave this out. Overall though it's much more reliable than my old car that I traded in, and it's much newer and probably safer. I may trade it in at some point but for now I'm happy to keep it.

This was one of the few small SUVs that are 4 door, have high reliability, and come with a stick shift. My 2019 Crosstrek has no bells or whistles. No seat warmer, no lane changing detection, no sunroof, no accident avoidance. It does have power windows and a backup camera. I simply do not want a bunch of technology on my car that I don't use. I know how to parallel park, I do not look up at the sky while I am driving and I enjoy being in total control of which gear my car is in. As for power, it has enough. Any more power and I would just get more speeding tickets and have higher blood pressure while driving. The only downside is excessive road noise at high speeds. It may also not be large enough for people over 6 feet tall or 3 feet wide.

I think the car is a good car in some respects. I have the car since March and find the acceleration to be very noisy. the seats are not comfortable on trips longer than an hour. The suspension is stiff, and there is affair amount of play in the steering wheel.

This car is a pathetic attempt at greenwashing the brand. I tried it about a month ago and came away unimpressed. Having the dealer tack on a $5k "market adjustment" made me leave the dealership fuming. The car is under-powered, loud, hampered by a battery lump in the trunk AND $10K TOO EXPENSIVE. Seriously, what are Subaru execs thinking?

Read all negative (1 star) reviews and went to a dealer, thinking that I'm prepared but I was wrong because nobody said that "2019 Subaru Crosstrek doesn't have any power". While talking to a salesman, I made a few comments (negatives because he was to cocky) and he confirmed them, brought a fresh 2019 Subaru Crosstrek and I drove it. I need SUV because I am moving to Alaska for work, like within 3 weeks. But I am not going to buy 2019 Subaru Crosstrek. It is weak. Engine 2.0 has no power.Gears 2 and 3 don't communicate well. When you are on 3 or 4 at 45 mph it's fine.I think car is dangerously weak. If you need to change lines or avoid hazard , you will get in accident.
