Good mileage with an xB
Our experience with the xB has been pretty good to date. We average about 35 mpg with mostly highway driving. The ride on the interstate is a bit bumpy and noisy. Our Camry rides better on the interstate and is better for longer road trips. This vehicle is fine for everyday driving or for commuting to work. It fits well for tall drivers - my husband is over 6' and it fits him very comfortably. I wouldn't purchase this unless it has cruise control installed.
loved it... so we purchased 2 xB's
My wife and I each have an xB. They are roomy on the inside, very dependable, and quite fun to drive.even though Scion aims for the younger generation. I am 56 and the wife is over 50. These little "toasters" are much easier for the older drivers and passengers to enter and exit. Parking is a snap. It's as easy as a golf cart. although it does not have a "luxury ride" the "Toaster" will do what retiree's need without breaking the bank (even on a fixed income). The fit and finish are superior to nearly any car on the market, reguardless of price. The xB is an excellent value both in purchase price and cost of operation. I highly recommend at least driving the xB before purchasing any similar vehicle.

Wanted it since it came out...
This toaster is everything I wanted. It has great fuel economy, a low operating cost, a simple design, Toyota reliability, styling, features... I could go on and on. I have 2 complaints (both of which I knew going into the purchase). 1) The box has ZERO aerodynamics, therefore, it is impossible to keep all of the bugs off of your windsheild. 2) The gearing in the transmission is very short. Toyota did this to get the most acceleration out of this ice cream truck. At 80 mph in 5th gear (manual transmission), you are at 4,000 rpm's. Other than that... It's great. It looks so small on the outside, yet you have so much room on the inside. Plus the aftermarket tuning comminity has taken this car and ran with it.
MPG?
Beware of the gas mileage in the city. We get maybe 22-24 mpg in the city, which is nowhere close to the 31 mpg that is says on the sticker. Besides that, the car is worth the less than $15,000 and it is even better with a few cosmetic upgrades.
Go speed racer
My Scion xB is silver with a stick. It is a very slow car, but it's so sweet. I can't stand myself. It's love. I have the blue light in the footwells, and the armrest which is essential. This is a very dark car on the inside, so get a light. I'm getting 32 MPG combined. Again, this car is extremely slow. The back phony lowrider tail section is falling off because I cracked it on a curb. You need to be careful. Buy this car immediately. It doesn't get any better. The dealer will have nothing to do with haggling. Get them on the interest rate of the loan you will pay. They will go into the other room, their face will turn red, and they'll make the deal - sort of. Good luck, and happy driving.
I love it, but....
I bought my 2006 Scion xB (automatic, black cherry,) for its' unique design, great price, and promised fuel economy.
I love my toaster
I am actually a salesman as well, and after shopping around the market looking at anything from SUVs to the Scion xB I decided to invest in a Scion. I do a lot of driving in the winter and the idea that the car comes with traction assist, brake force distribution, and VSC while still being at 15 and change was really appealing. I snowboard a lot and I needed room as well as good gas mileage, not to mention with the money I saved buying this car I bought 18" wheels to go with it made by Enkei. I know that most people look at this car and think that it's ugly, and honestly, so did I when my friend bought one, but after owning it for a while I love it. I also paid sticker like anyone else would.
A Happy Camper!
This vehicle is by far the best I've ever owned. It's practical for stowing just about everything (including surprising roominess for back-seat passengers), and yet is really fun to drive (and park!). My fuel economy has averaged between 32 and 35 mpg, depending on my driving patterns.
Love the Box
The Scion xB is the first vehicle I've had that draws so much attention. It is very fun to drive and I couldn't ask for better gas milage. The power isn't all that great, but I didn't want a race car. It would be better if there was a front dome light and a better armrest. I give it an A+!
Review by Mr. Hans
The 2006 Scion xB is a great car and a great buy. It is a little short on power, but makes up for this in the wallet when pumping gas!
A Joy to Own!
I highly recommend this vehicle, especially the limited edition with the DVD player and screens on the back of the head rests and in an eye catching envy green! I have never had so many people stop to ask me about my car before and that's before they even know about the cool extra inside. These cars are so roomy! I even love to ride in the back seat...it is so roomy. The seats are comfortable all around, the design is so suportive to your back and the dash design and placement of controls makes sense! The quality of materials inside is excellent. Its great visibility makes it a dream to drive! It gets great gas mileage, It's excellent even when you are running with a full load and full cargo area. I love my xB!
Fantastic
I recently purchased a new 2006 Scion xB. I love the style, way it handles, its standard features, and all the possibilities there are to customize it. I bought mine with only the standard features. I found that a lot of the addons through Scion were costly. I purchased things like floor mats, a cargo net, and arm rest for half the price on-line. It came standard with a 6 speaker pioneer stereo with CD and an auxilary jack for my MP3 player. It has remote keyless entry and it gets great gas mileage. This summer its been great to take to the beach. I just put the back seats down and through the cooler, chairs, umbrella, boogy boards all in the back and off to the beach I went.
Follow-up review
I have had my xB for 6 months and 7,000 miles and thought an extended use report may be useful to some. Still love my xB. I have taken a couple of road trips and it has done great. I did customize my car with factory upgrades and it still turns heads going down the road. People of all ages give me compliments. Its gas mileage is good, I average about 32 mpg in town and 36 on the interstate. This car can carry a good amount of luggage (fold down rear seats) for trips involving 2-3 people. It has lots of head and leg room. The only problem I have involves build quality. My rear seat makes a noise in the upright position. Also, I get an annoying vibration from the front seat belts where they adjust up and down.
Can't Beat it for the Money
I bought my xB automatic today. After looking at the Honda CR-V, the Chrysler PT Cruiser, and the Toyota Matrix, I decided upon the xB. It is much cheaper than the CR-V, yet has more standard features than any others in the wagon/hatchback class. It has just as much room as many SUVs, but gets great gas mileage and is fun to drive. It feels like a whole other world inside the cabin. It's size is quite deceiving from the outside. It's high roof gives the feel of even more room.
Post-modern Car
This is a great car. It is a car that is either loved or hated by consumers. There is no middle ground. It is fun, fun, fun. It is a nimble, little, urban loving car. It has a very tight turning radius. It darts in and out of traffic effortlessly. If you are looking for something a little out of the ordinary, with great fuel mileage and reliability, this is the car for you.
Don't use the A/C
This car is fine for running around town. I am assuming the gas mileage is ok as long as you don't use the air condition. Which is Southern California is next to impossible. Once the AC is used the gas mileage is horrible. With AC use gas mileage goes down to about 14mpg. Overall an ok car for around town errand, but next time I will buy something with a bigger engine so the air conditioner doesn't kill the gas mileage.
I Hope It Lasts for 10 Plus Years
This is my second new car purchase in over six years. The xB is easy and nice to drive, no thrills, but enjoyable. I do have complaints with the A/C unit though. It does not put out enough cool air in the hot Arizona summers. Also, I can feel the bumps on the road, but I can deal with that given the value price. Would buy the same model again if I had to buy over? Absolutely, there is nothing else on market with equal value in terms of pricing, size, and quality. I average about 27 miles per gallon (but A/C was on all the time). I don't care for the color choices or accessories. It needs a center arm rest.
Kermie's Car
My Scion xB handles well and is not affected by the wind, which is surprising in a car shaped like a box. I am getting 32 mpg city/highway combined. It is easy to drive and its seats are very comfortable and back supportive. My son's are all 6 feet tall or taller and they can sit in the back seat with ample leg room. This car is fun to drive. I have the Special Edition which is Kermit green so I get lots of looks, double takes, and waves from other xB drivers. I also get a lot of "what kind of car is that anyway?" It has plenty of cargo room, we hauled two weeks' worth of supplies, two adults, and a dog to the cottage we rent every summer. It is a decent car for well under $20,000.
Great Company Vehicle
These Scions are great for company vehicles. The come with standard vehicle skid control, antilock brakes, and roomy interiors. We use them for our employees, they are useful and great on gas. They are basically a rolling billboard we will plaster our company name and logo, with a wrap-around mesh type ads that will cover the side and rear windows (not the front of course). It is a great way to advertise.
Love My xB
I just bought my Scion xB because I wanted better gas mileage than my 14 mpg SUV. I love the interior space and couldn't bear to buy a compact car. The exterior and interior design is great, and the xB is suprisingly quick from a stop. Second and third gear are a bit sluggish, but at cruising speed it will keep up with anything on the freeway. Its ride is very smooth and quiet. The A/C works great on mine, and I am in 115 degree heat in Palm Springs in the summer. The interior could use a few small tweaks, but is overall satisfactory. The low price makes the xB a fantastic value, and mine is getting around 32 mpg on 2/3 freeway and 1/3 city driving. I hope more accessories come out soon!
Best deal for the dollar!
Before purchasing my Scion xB I researched and test drove many automobiles (Saturn ION, Honda Civic, VW Beetle, etc.). I travel frequently with my job and was searching for a good looking, reliable car with great fuel economy. I must admit my Scion xB has exceeded all my expectations. Because Scion let me build my xB I got everything I wanted in a car for less than $17,500. Gas mileage: I currently get 29 mpg in town and 32 mpg on highway. Despite the fact the xB has a 1.5 litre engine it cruises comfortably at 75-85 mph. The interior room in this car is huge. Rear seats fold for extra storage space. Car has amazing head/leg room as well. I have friends over 6 feet tall who fit comfortably.
combat toaster... mini-mini van
I needed to get something good on gas ($3 per/gallon was on the horizon). My Hemi powered Dodge 2500, while needed, is thirsty. Not to mention a bear to drive around town. I looked at several gas misers, but wanted something with more usefulness then past festivas. After test drives, and reading I bought an xB. It was an easy purchase, $20 filled the tank (although, sadly more is needed now!) and it's handles city driving like a roller skate!
A Great Runabout
This car replaced my beloved '95 Honda Accord Wagon which was wrecked, so I tend to compare it with the Accord. The xB excells in ease of entry/exit, price, fuel economy, head and legroom, cargo space when the rear seat isn't in use, 360 degree visibility, and ease of parking. On the down side, its engine performance is barely adequate, its ride quality is a little rough, it doesn't have much seat comfort, has a high noise level, and its handling in cross winds are tolerable but don't compare favorably with the Honda. In general, I like the Scion for local driving but miss the Accord for trips over 50 miles and cargo space with four people on board.
Smart Design
This is my first new car. I did not like it until I drove it, but then I knew right away that it was the car that I had to have. Unless you plan on drag racing, the engine gets the job done. The interior design is brilliant. The head room is amazing and the leg room in the front and rear is more than most SUVs. The rear seats fold flat to make room for cargo. The sound system is fantastic with the iPod aux hook up. The automatic was sluggish so I went with the manual. I get between 33-37 mpg depending on how much highway driving is done on each tank, much better than EPA estimates. For the price and standard features, this car is a steal.
Love It
There is a whole lot of room in this car. I can fit full size adults with room to spare. I love the height and the way it handles, better than expected. My fuel economy is averaging 32 mpg city and highway for an automatic. It is easy to fold the seats down and haul items. this is the first car I haven't had to take back to the dealer for "corrections." It gets a lot of looks and it is completely custumizable to each individual's taste. Kind of like my motorcycle, others may have one but no two are alike.
Love my BOX
Is the best "car" I have ever had. It gets excellent gas mileage, 29 mpg city with the AC on and in heavy stop and go traffic, and 36 mpg highway. It is roomy on the inside yet, easy to park. It has an excellent price for such a quality built product. I love the BOX look. It is great to buy a statement car for working man's money. I changed the speakers to improve the sound and added Dynamat to reduce the noise. I replaced the exhaust resonator with something quieter. I love the ride now.
My Little Boxter
From the first time I saw this little boxy car, I knew I had to have one. I sold a 2000 Lexus ES 300 for my Scion XB and I don't regret it one bit!
I Love my Toaster
The Scion xB is affordable, fun to drive, and unusual. This may be the best car I've ever owned, all things considered.
xB = Fun
The xB is fun to drive in the way that my VW van was fun to drive. It has lots of room inside and it is cheap to run. Load it up and go to the beach, or river or whereever.
Very Cool Car
This car is great! I love all the room inside. It is much easier to get get in and out of than other cars. It's got enough power to get ya going, but it could be better. It has a solid ride and it handles well. It gets very good gas mileage. Once you get used to it, that speedometer is really at a good place. You don't have to look too far away from the road, to see how fast you're going. Nice idea!
Amazing Little Box
For the exterior size, the interior is huge. Its large doors and low seating enable easy entry and exit. It has excellant visibility. With the rear seats down, there is all kinds of room for groceries, etc.
A real bargin
The xB is great overall, but its gas mileage doesn't meet my expectations.
Good Cheap Transportaion
I drive over 40,000 miles a year and was looking for something with good gas mileage. I bought the xB for the cargo space. With the back seats folded down, it can carry a lot of cargo. I have been averageing 30 mpg or better in a mix of highway and city driving. The car has a little pep as long as you smash the pedal to the floor. Overall it's been a good cheap form of transportaion.
Older Folks Like It Too!
My wife and I are in our 50's and we absolutely love this car. We were looking for something economical to buy, economical to operate, and fun to drive! We sure found it in the Scion Xb. I've always liked small cars. The first car I ever bought was a '63 Volkswagon Beetle. I've owned eveything from small pick-ups to a Porsche 914 and a Honda CR-V, but the xB is the most fun to drive. Even though it is marketed to younger people, I think a lot middle-aged and older people would really enjoy this car.
Love All of It, but the Driver's Seat
I am 6'8 and the xB is one of the few inexpensive dependable cars I could consider. So far so good. I get about 33 mpg in all driving. My problem is that the driver's seat is very uncomfortable. I would benefit from having a power seat that allows more adjustment. I would not recommend this car anyone over 6'4". The available arm rest is cheap and does no good for me. Otherwise the xB is a pleasure to drive and surprisingly quiet when driven in town.
Great Multipurpose vehicle
This is a great vehicle for someone who needs a lot of room for a little bit of money. This car is fun to drive, the handling around turns is great, even on wet roads. I'm a little over 6' tall and finding a comfortable car is hard for me, but the xB has plenty of foot and head room. I've been getting about 33-34 mpg with it and thats important to me because I drive quite a bit. My only complaint so far would be that Scion shows as a standard feature the audio controls on the steering wheel and mine did not come with that.
Scion
This car is great in town. We have never taken it on a long road trip. It is a little sluggist on hills though. It has lots of interior room. It is fun to drive and attracts lots of attention.
I LOVE This BOX!
I wanted a car with more space for hauling and something that would get good gas mileage too. My Scion xB has exceeded all my dreams. My car is getting 35 mpg in the city! It is fun to drive; it handles great, and its visibility is amazing. It's litte on the outside (a dream to park!) and huge on the inside. I don't know how they do it but glad they did. I had a sunroof installed and love it, with the satelite XM radio, or my iPod playing through the speakers, sunroof open...it just doesnt get any better! Also, this car is SO easy to get in and out of. Senior passengers LOVE it! If you want a fun, zippy, roomy, inexpensive car for running around, I highly recommend it! I love this car. :-)
The little Box that could
My Scion xB Auto has so far impressed me. I have a wife and 2 3/4 year olds so it fits our family perfectly. Our first road trip of 700 miles went well. The xB drove beautifully. It does lack the grunt to climb big hills and the door panels and other interior parts scuff very easily. I can live with that because the ride is nice and tight and the little box gets great MPG. The cernter mount speedo/tach is nice. I thought it would be difficult to get used to since it first appears a little quirky. This was not the case. It's very easy to read and keep your eyes on the road. The seats are comfortable for the longer legs of a journey and the engine is smooth/quiet at around 70-72 MPH.
It's Fun
I love the box. It has so much room and how you're seated provides a great view of the road. Its leg room is excellent, even in the back seat. I have a son who's 350 lbs. + and 6'3" and he loves the room. It has a great stereo. It feels good on the road, it is as much fun to drive as my first Bug that I got back in 1973. So many people want to sit in it and drive it, Toyota should be paying me. A work associate who is almost six feet nine inches tall said it was the first vehicle he ever got in in his life he did not have to duck to get into. And the 33 mpg is great.
Love It!
First I'd like to say, I never thought I'd buy an import car, but this is one great little vehicle and I'm glad I bought it! It's Great on gas and fun / easy to drive. It has so much interior room that you have to see it to believe it (you have to sit in one and you'll see for yourself - it's amazing on the inside). Took it from NJ to FL and back this summer and it while not a highway rocket, it did better than I expected with three adults plus luggage and A/C on along Route 95. Passing did require some strategic planning, but it gets the job done!
GREAT CAR...
I have long been a Toyota fan and loved this little "xbox" from the get go. I purchased mine a year ago and I have really enjoyed it. I am a big guy and I find that most cars are uncomfortable and cramped. Not so with this one!!! I can sit in the front or back and have plenty of head and leg room. I work as a REALTOR and all of my clients are surprised by the roominess of my xB. Mine has the TRD cold air intake and exhaust, so I have improved horsepower and gas mileage. I average about 30 in town and I have gotten 38 on the highway, while loaded with 4 people, and luggage, driving at 80 mph. This car had my full approval and gets a great big thumbs up!!!
I love this Box
Ok, at first I was a little skeptical to buy this car because it kinda looked like a toaster, but so many things grew on me after awhile when I saw the gas mileage, loads of interior room and endless acessories. This car is truly the real deal. On an 11.9 gallon tank this car can go on the highway about 325 miles roughly...at least that's what I calculated. I get so many compliments on this car. I just tell 'em you gotta' drive it to really believe it.
Frown Turned to Grin After Test Drive.
I frowned at first sight of an xB. My salesmen immediately offered a test drive. The rest is history. I had driven all the rest (Yaris, Fit, Civic, Corrola, etc.). The xB was simply the best! I love the ease of entry/exit, high seating position, excellent visibility, ample leg/headroom (Im 65 with a 37 inseam), firm ride, great handling, better than expected gas mileage (approximately 34 combined city/highway) and sound options. This cas has turned my 45 mile commute (one-way) from a chore to a pleasure. As others have mentioned, the cars appearance elicits a lot of comment and opinion. People either love it or hate it. As a former skeptic myself, I simply say drive one."
Scion xB
The Scion xB is a great vehicle. It is incredibly practical and has everything you need and most things you want in a car.
Love my XB!
We used to make fun of these cars, now we love 'em! It's fun to drive and is REALLY spacious on the inside. Its gas mileage is great. Plus its made by Toyota, you can't go wrong there. It has a great price for a new car. It is better suited for shorter distance driving. It is marketed toward the 20-something crowd, but it is actually bought by families and older adults. Don't let the marketing influence your decision, just test drive one.
What a Wagon!
This car is wonderful. I have to admit at first I was totally against the car because of the body style but after buying one because of husband I love it. The xB is fun to drive, has more room than you could image, and it gets great gas mileage. Looking at the outside I thought it would be small inside, but NO. I have a 300 pound 6 ft. 3 in. husband and there is still plenty of room in the back seat when he drives. I would like for it to have more get up and go but I'm a lead foot person. Plus, they give a wonderful environmental package that sound proofs from outside and scotch guards the inside. All I have to say is, LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE...
The Scion Xb
I have had 2 Scion xB's. The first one I got was in August of 2004. I sold that one and took out all my little goodies and bought another brand new one. The reason I did this was because I got tired with a black car and always needing to wash it. So i got a silver one this time. The car is great. I would think more people my age would like the Scion xB then the old guys. Its a teenagers car.
Love My xBox
I do love my new Scion xB however, with less than 500 miles on it, I already had to fix a chip in the windshield and there is already a paint chip missing on my hood from the same gravel that hit my windshield. This car seems to be prone to chips and nicks. My previous car was an '03 Corolla, I went 3.5 years without one chip on my windshield. I guess I will be buying lots of touch-up paint. I will keep this as long as it will take me around.
I Love My '06 xB!
The first time I saw this car was in the dealership. It was love at first sight. I went home and told my husband about it, but he didn't believe that the car was so spacious. So after one month of waiting he finally decided to go to the dealership with me to take a close look at it, and he also fell in love, and finally got me the car.
