Most of the pro reviews dis the iM for various reasons but I've found it to be a great little car. Chances are you're not going to drive your car at the track or through a slalom so why be so concerned with the acceleration and cornering? Acceleration is good from the 1.8L - if you want a car that jerks your head back off the line this isn't it (go buy a mustang or camaro). Handling and cornering are good and road feel is great. The car feels solid and responds accordingly. The interior looks pretty good considering it's cloth and soft-touch plastic. All controls are reasonably located and easy to use. A tall person (over 6 foot) will not like the rear seat as the aerodynamics of the roof takes its toll on rear seat headroom. A drop-down console in the middle of the rear seat is great for passengers. Bluetooth connection to my phone is flawless. I'm seeing 41 mpg on flat highway and averaging 35 mpg around town (mix of city and hilly suburban driving).

I'm a 56 year old man, not the youngster they supposedly market this vehicle to. I've owned my Barcelona Red IM for one week now. I love it, pure and simple. It rides as quiet inside as a 2015 Camry SE, handles better, with better gas mileage (so far, around 31mph for the first 200 miles in mixed driving). It also looks fantastic, and the hatchback means the space in the back won't go to waste. Don't listen to the negative reviews about power, this car has plenty of get up and go, particularly with the sport button engaged. Now is a great time to purchase, as they're blowing them out, I got mine a full 2 grand under sticker. Plus, the added bonus of Toyota reliability. It says something about this soon to be defunct Scion that Toyota is continuing the model in 2017 as the Toyota Corolla IM. The only negative I have is the lack of a CD player, but I'm adjusting to that, using Flash drives. The stereo sounds fantastic. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS CAR. UPDATE TO PREVIOUS REVIEW - Now getting 33 mpg in mixed driving. Love this car. UPDATE TO PREVIOUS REVIEW - 6 MONTHS IN, AND I'M STILL LOVING IT. ** ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY UPDATE: I've owned about 20 new cars in my life, this one is by far my fave. Still averaging 33 mpg. In June I took a 400 mile round trip road trip to Tennessee, averaged 36.5 mpg while averaging around 75 mph.

This was my first new car purchase and don't regret choosing the scion iM. I'm averaging 34 miles with combined driving, I love the interior and exterior of the car. I travel a lot, most of my trips are about seven hours long and I haven't experienced any discomforts other than a gas pedal that feels a little small to my foot but I've already gotten adjusted to it. Blue tooth works great and the speakers are amazing! I also found driving this car to be quite fun, it's fast enough for me (that's not saying much since I'm a slow driver) and the turning is very good (and that's saying something with me). I've had this car for about four months and I already have over 7,000 miles on the odometer with no issues whatsoever. I'm updating my review. I was just in an accident where a Toyota Tundra rear ended me. My scion i'M didn't even have a scratch while the truck that hit me did damage his vehicle. Im still loving my scion and feel much safer about driving my car after this.

My previous car was a 2013 Prius V (Wagon) which is about the size of a RAV4. I was looking to downsize and get out of my high mileage Prius. I've always been a fan of Toyota and a fan of their Scion brand. Til this date, my favorite car was the 2008 Scion XB. I'm a bit of a car nut and like looking on cars on cargurus and I stumbled upon the 2016 Scion IM in black last year (2019) I remember seeing this car a few years ago when my XB was in the service bay and thought the IM was too small. However; driving a huge wagon that is the Prius V for a couple years and driving mostly for work commutes, I thought the downsize was justifiable. I made an appointment at the dealer and took the IM out for a test drive and immediately I wanted to trade my Prius in for it. The car is no Mustang, but it has alot of pep for a little hot hatckback. With in a few hours of signing my paperwork at the dealer, I drove off the lot with the car and I couldn't be happier with this car. I've always been a fan of hatches and econobox cars and this car suits my needs. The Prius V averages around 40-42 MPG, with a year of driving this IM I've been averaging mid 30s-low 40s. So I think the car is worth it, still cheap to fill the tank and is very fun to drive. The Prius V seats killed my back on road trips, so that was another factor of getting rid of the Prius. I've driven the IM on several road trips that taken hours and not once have I felt discomfort during those drives. The seats support my 6ft frame very well and I don't feel any pain after long drives. I often look for excuses to take the scenic route to work and other places because I enjoy driving this car. For a hatchback, the cargo area is very pleasantly usable and large. My ex girlfriend and I spent many nights camping in the back with a twin size air mattress blown up, with the rear seats folded, it fit the mattress very snug and fit both her and I fairly well. I've managed to fit all my belongings from a 1 bedroom apartment in this car on a move I made last year. Been on a few road trips with tall people, all 6 ft tall and taller and they were able to fit in the car just fine during long road trips. Don't listen to the pro reviewers on this car as they often expect this to be a rally car or be a true sports car, which it is not. It's a affordable stylish Scion (Corolla hatchback) that's versatile, reliable and fun to drive car. I've owned this car for a year now and I still love this car as much as the day I test drove it. Other than upgrading the tires and oil changes, I've had no issues and I've put on nearly 20,000 miles since I got the car. (41,000-62,000) Update: Here I am sitting at 73,000 miles and this car still attracts my eyes everytime I walk away from it going into work. I get so many compliments from mechanics, coworkers, family, friends and even complete strangers about how nice the car is. One person compared the interior to a Lexus. I've been on 2 separate road trips from Massachusetts to Maine with nonstop driving for 5+ hours with only stops for bathroom/meal breaks and the car didn't even flinch on keeping up on highway speeds on the Maine highways that have 75mph speed limits. Even with my last Maine trip, I was hitting 39-40 MPG and I got the same on the way back. Sometimes I do wish I had a slightly bigger car but then when I make trips to Boston; I'm thankful how easy the car is to park and maneuver into tight spaces and parking garages. I've done a ton of exterior and interior modifications to the cars looks to suit my personality and I just couldn't be happier with my little hatchback. Toyota really did themselves good by bringing this car to the states. Sure its only front wheel drive; but I've gone through 2 New England winters and several bad snow storms and this car just chugs right through the snow and poor road conditions. With a set of decent tires, I've yet to slip or get stuck. My work got over 7 inches of snow during my shift and the parking lot wasn't plowed out yet as I was going home. I got in my car and just drove right through the snow from my parking space without an issue. Getting on the main roads where the snow was alot deeper, the car still managed plowing through the snow just fine. Recently; I found out the battery in my car was the original battery that came with the car when it was shipped to the dealer back in 2016. While getting my oil change; the dealer offered me a lifetime warranty replacement on the battery; meaning I'll never have to buy another car battery again for as long as I own this car on top of 5 years of free oil changes I get from this dealer. Between reliability, dependability, overall cost of ownership and how Toyota treats their customers; this is why I'll never own anything but a Toyota. When this car is no longer operable; if Toyota is still making the Corolla hatchback; that will be my next car or maybe the Corolla Cross or CHR as they are all pretty much the same vehicle.

Based on renting vehicles while in England. This is really a very competent vehicle. Roomy and comfortable, the side windows and rear do not slope down as they do in the Ford Focus/Volvo S40. So visibility is excellent and it can store much more luggage than Edmund's gives credit. I packed a roll-around luggage piece the size of a golf bag with no problem positioned sideways across the rear compartment (could easily take 2 golf bags). Had to fold seats down in the Volvo. The manual shifter is spring-loaded and took awhile to get used to, but got the hang of it quickly (right-hand drive no less). Performance with a 6-speed and the smaller engine was adequate. Gas mileage was quite good (over 35 mpg). Seating is comfortable and passengers noted the roominess for a smaller vehicle. The driver's seat has height adjustment, and although the front window does slope steeply, there was plenty of headroom. I did not have the rear visibility problems Edmunds mentions in their review. We are looking to acquire a US spec version in the next year since we liked the rental so much.

No mater what Edmund's says and they have very little they like about the Scion iM. I bought this car because it's cool looking and I don't drive on a race track so the quick performance they complained about isn't that important to me. I live in a very busy city and rarely do you find high speed driving available on Austin's freeways. I drove a 2006 Mazda 3 hatchback for 9 years and put 95K on it. Great car and it had plenty of get up and go. Reason i didn't buy another one and chose the Sion was because I don't particularly like the looks of the new body style of the Mazda's. I hate the that the license plate sit directly in the middle of the front grill. Looks ugly. I'm happy with my Scion and gas mileage is good in the city and on the highway. No complaints here.

Just Got My IM June 10th

I didn't set out to buy an IM. I had looked at several and most didn't drive well or were to small. The Mazda CX3 was too small. The Jeep Renegade did not handle securely. I didn't want to look at a Ford or Honda. Everybody has a Honda. I was picking a friend up from the Toyota Dealer and i saw this RED IM and I just loved it. I came back about 3 weeks later and drove it and loved it more. Made a great deal. They gave me a good price for my trade-in and I put no money down and I have monthly price I can live with. I highly recommend this car. I love driving it!

If your looking for a fun compact car, this is it. Scion is made by Toyota, so I’m expecting dependability. As long as you change the oil per manufacture recommendations, every 5K, should last up to and maybe beyond 300K miles. So far very happy with my purchase. It’s a nice looking little car too!

I am 69 years old and traded a BMW for this Im. So far it is as much fun to drive as the Beemer. Doesn't hug the road like the BMW but, what car does! Don't miss the blinding acceleration but. don't really need it. Gas mileage is fantastic! Almost as good as my wife's Prius. Really sporty looking car! I want to drive it all of the time because I enjoy it so much.

It's indestructible. I'm hard on cars. Always at home depot loading stuff. I put a hitch on it and pull a 5 x 8 trailer for bigger items. It is lower so loading is perfect. Roof is accessible if u need. Smooth ride. 80 mph on hwy very comfortable and real easy to drive park etc. I will keep this as my second work car for many years and get my money's worth.

I have been shopping for many months and stumbled upon the I'm by accident. I was looking at a used Scion xD and went into the Toyota showroom and was looking at the new cars. Well I sat in a few and when. Sat in the I'm I thought the seats were very comfortable. Well my salesperson pulled one up and I drove it and found out it was quite easy to drive. Well I went home and mulled it over and went point by point vs. the used xd. After comparing everything I decided on the I'm! My salesperson got me a great price and they dealer traded for my electric blue. Went in the next night, drove the blue one, got a good deal n my trade and drove home with my beautiful blue car. I love hatchbacks and I especially love toyotas. I have only had her for a week but n my suburban short trips driving I am averaging 33 mpg. I am very happy Toyota will be keeping this model, if they weren't, I wouldn't have bought it. So far it fits my needs and I love to drive it. It is low to the ground but I too am a senior citizen, but I am dealing with that issue. I do wish it had a CD player but I'll have to put my CDs on something else so I can play my tunes going down the road. A sunroof would be nice in this but not an option, hopefully Toyota will add that. I think the inside is very nice, much nicer than many other cars I took on test drives. If you live in a suburb of Chicago head over to oak brook Toyota in westmont and ask for Samantha. Would highly recommend her and the dealership. I wanted to update my review after 6 months, I still love my car! I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a new car. Well it's been a year with my little blue and I still love her! Went on multiple Midwest trips last summer and she drove like a dream. I'll be heading to door county again this summer with her and I expect great mpg again and a beautiful trip. Last year I got over 40 mpg on trips. I have had no trips in for service other than the 5,000 and 10,000 oil change tire rotation. Still lovin my little blue car!

This is a continuation of my original post now that I recently acquired a US spec 2017 Toyota I/M. Everything stated before applies and then some. The US version has 17" wheels and 225mm width tires. The result is a more stable ride on the freeway. Drives on the freeway like my 1988 Mustang GT with 245mm tires on 16" wheels. Very stable, very composed. Standing start acceleration is not a strong suit with this vehicle, but freeway performance is another matter. In my area, we have freeways with long uphill grades. The I/M can actually accelerate uphill and in 6th gear! Cruises at 75 to 80 easily!!!! In 6th gear, engine is only turning 3000 rpm. The car is very quiet at speed and comfortable. The seats have large bolsters and are snug, but still very comfortable. The driver's seat is 6-way manual adjust and don't feel the need for a power seat. We typically keep cars over 10 years and over 100,000 miles. I am very confident this vehicle will meet these milestones. Gas mileage from day 1 is 27.6 mpg. Nothing to rock about except I live in San Francisco. Lots of stop and go - and hills. When on freeway, have seen an indicated 40 mpg. Car is geared to run on cruise control @ 62.5 mph or 100 kph to get best gas mileage. On the other hand, I have seen triple digits with this car. May not accelerate fast, but can cruise with the best of them. Dusted a Civic Si on the freeway. Handling is quite good. Love the Toyo tires and the rib that protects the rims. As you can see, no negatives. Fine vehicle and got for a steal ($16k out the door). Will definitely be keeping it for the 10 years & 100k.

Found a 2016 with 17000 miles on it for $11900 It's the Red color. For the price, year and mileage I don't know that I could have gained a whole lot more value. I've only had a week, but so far The car works flawlessly. It's got great features. It's not fast but fun to drive. Smooth, Quiet, Stylish and a little sporty looking. I was relieved to research that these cars are being continued as Toyota's after the Scion name brand was discontinued. Basically this is the first version of Corolla hatchback. I've trusted Toyota for many years. I've had 2, my brother has 2 and I've never been let down. Update- My hatchback window/windshield was just imploded one morning when I went out to my car. The front windshield started as a tiny divet and now has crack streak all the way across, going to have to replace this soon. Anyway else see windshield issues with this car? Other than that it's had no issues in a year.

The iM is a great car for the money. Well equipped for its price point with all of the reliability the Toyota Corolla is known for. Looks nicer than the Corolla, and handles better too. The rear seat is roomier on the Corolla, but for my son, commuting back and forth to college, its not an issue. Update: This is now my car. My son got a new Toyota CHR (he loves it), so the iM has become my commute car. It does very well for this purpose. I average 40.4 MPG in mixed driving. I commute over 100 miles a day, so I pack on the miles. My commute is horrible, with a lot of it just stopping and creeping along, so it is more like town driving. No trouble with the car, as I expect from a Toyota.

I just purchased a new Scion iM the car handles great and gets excellent gas mileage. The nice thing about this car is it comes loaded with options like heated power folding mirrors, leather wrapped steering wheel, touchscreen radio with back up camera and Bluetooth. The car isn't super fast nor did I buy it for that reason if I wanted a fast car I would bought a corvette, any way I'm pleased with my purchase.

Solid car. All the space and a good base for a tuner. Sure you might need to dig a bit to find pieces that match. But the CT200 shares the same frame. Zippy, very responsive steering, and brakes like a dream. Yeah the backseat is a littlw cramped for legroom, but it does the job. Had someone run a red light while i was on green. Airbags and front crumplezone worked exactly as they were intended to. God Bless Scion/Toyota for making a fun, safe, reliable, and economic car without sacrificing style. Otherwise I'd be dead.

If you're looking for a "sport" compact, keep looking. The engine is underpowered. I bought the car for reliability. I'd rather have another 20 - 30 horsepower now though after buying it. Oh well... when it's paid for in 5 years I get something faster.

The Loyal Blueberry

Bought my '16 Scion IM April of '22 from an estate sale. Sold my 2004 Accord since I wanted to try having a "newish" car and do uber on the side. 2 months after i left my main job to do Uber full time and the car has been great. Its comfy enough for 4 people, 600 - 700 km per tank of gas, optional Navigation has gotten me home from places with no cell reception. the Electric storm blue makes the car look more expensive. only thing thats gone wrong was a 40$ hood cable and a burned out headlight. which is really nothing other than normal wear and tear. Although my old Accord had a little more power and just more "car" in general, its an apples to oranges comparison since the accord is a midsize and the scion is an economy hatchback just above the Yaris. I wouldnt mind a little more pep (happy with the good old 1.8 overall) Heated seats (following year had it standard) and one more power outlet. also not a fan of the paper oil filters Anyway, in the 2 years i've had it its been great to me, fun to drive, easy on the wallet and uber riders give me compliments every day on it. as long as I keep it rustproofed and maintained I do think its possible to get 20 years out of this car. thanks for reading.

Dangerously slow acceleration

Pros : Comfort to drive. Cons : Very dangerous when merging to freeway, because car extremely poor to accelerate. Very endangering life when need to catch the traffic speed. I have my 3 children at the back, this car always makes me worry whenever entering freeway. MPG also not as advertised supposed to be. City is 28 as advertised, but freeway hardly just to get 33.

The tires are as thin as paper. In less than a year of owning it I frequently have had to change all four tires back to back. The bumpers lay about an inch above the ground constantly getting stuck in snow or the bumper scraping the the ground/curb. The headlights are weak making visibility poor. Even my flashlight shines brighter and no fog lights are equipped. Acceleration is very bad especially merging onto the highway or passing other drivers. The car has no cd player so. I can't listen to all my favorite music and the horn sounds like a woman screaming "Ayyy-Ayyy". Also there not a variety of colors to choose from.

Recently, around 80,000 km. the car does not always start immediately. When the key is turned, the dash lights all come on and it is poised to start but the starter is not engaged. Turn it to the off position and try again and it usually starts. Sometimes, it takes 3 or 4 tries. Has anyone else experienced this problem? Otherwise, the car is great.

CVT Zaps Engines power

I bought this car brand new and I wish I would have test drove it longer than I did because the acceleration is atrocious. Sport mode helps somewhat but it still seems very sluggish I'm guessing its because of the dreadful cvt transmission. Besides the complaint about that acceleration the only other issue Ive had was replacing the interior fan blower motor at 49,000 miles. I also had to replace all 4 tires and all around brakes at 47,000 miles. I didn't like the fact that the car didn't offer a sunroof or a CD player. Gas mileage has also went down since I got it and the car has been in for every service listed in the manual. I still love the Spring green color and the sporty look the little car has and so far the paint and body hardware are holding up good.

I got mine last 2016 and still running like new. Reliable and flashy. Love the interior design, speaker and air conditioning. My city driving everyday doesn’t cost me much on gas especially on highway. Never failed me during winter storm too. Nothing negative from my side but only wishful comments to give me more comfort. I wish they make an AWD SUV version with better suspension and larger room at the back.

There's no more Scion brand. 2016 was the last model year.
