The 2024 Rolls-Royce Spectre is the storied carmaker's first foray into all-electric propulsion, and as with any vehicle that sports the iconic Spirit of Ecstasy hood ornament, it's the embodiment of luxurious perfection. With two massive rear-hinged coach doors, this coupe is longer than some luxury sedans and is priced well above them, too. With a price that easily crests half-a-million dollars, exclusivity is all but guaranteed. EV ownership works best if you can charge (240V) at home or at work ^{This typically means a 240V home installation, but you could also have a similar setup at your office or other places your car is already parked for several hours each day. Don't expect a regular household outlet (120V) to suffice unless you've got a plug-in hybrid, in which case overnight charging at home is feasible.}

Edmunds spotlight: A new era for Rolls-Royce

Rolls-Royce was already well known for its buttery-smooth engines and nearly silent cabins. Switching to an all-electric platform takes those attributes to levels that may be unattainable for any potential rivals. It's the quietest vehicle we've ever tested and we have the data to prove it. Smoothness also applies to the Spectre's power delivery. With no traditional transmission, there are no shifts to be felt, and the big coupe gathers speed as gracefully or as relentlessly as you desire. As novel as this first EV is, it doesn't abandon its past. You'd have a difficult time finding a vehicle that is as stately, refined and well built.

Competitors to consider

Not surprisingly, the Rolls-Royce Spectre is almost in a class of its own. The Lucid Air Sapphire might be cross-shopped by wealthy clients and costs half as much. It's also a stunning performer but doesn't match the Spectre's build quality. If Mercedes-Benz gave its EQS sedan the Maybach makeover, it could also be considered. For now the only electric choice in that realm is the EQS SUV. Bentley has plans to go electric, and that prospect will represent the closest rival, but the first model has been delayed until later in 2026.

How does the Spectre drive? The Spectre's athleticism will surprise you — it certainly surprised us. At our test track, this three-ton luxury coupe threw down a 3.9-second 0-to-60-mph time, as well as 0.94 g on the skidpad. Those are numbers normally reserved for sports cars. Impressive stuff.

Of course, the Spectre is not designed to be sporty. Its braking performance is adequate and rear-axle steering helps it negotiate tight turns, but the steering is tuned for comfort and ease of use above all. Ditto the suspension; this car's softly sprung waftability makes for pronounced body motions, but it also delivers that signature magic carpet ride.

How comfortable is the Spectre? It's a Rolls-Royce — comfort is the name of the game. The ride quality is nothing short of impeccable, and that's even on the coupe's largest 23-inch wheel option. At highway speeds, almost no road or wind noise makes its way into the cabin. Need data to back that up? The Spectre is the quietest vehicle we've ever tested with a sound meter. End of story.

If there's a single complaint to register, it's that the front seats could use a little more bolstering. The massage function could stand to be more robust too. Are we getting picky? Sure. But this is a Rolls-Royce. It should have the best seat massagers in the world.

Interior

How’s the interior? Opening those huge coach doors is one heck of a handshake, and indeed the Spectre makes a great first impression. Not only is the cabin beautifully appointed, it's actually very simply laid out. The car's controls are logical, and every single button and knob has great heft to its action. There isn't a single part of the Spectre's interior that doesn't look and feel ultra-premium.

The downside is that you occasionally feel like you're sinking in a bathtub. The beltline is high, which makes for poor visibility. The blind spots are large, too, and it's tough to really get a handle on just how big this car is from behind the wheel.

How’s the tech? Rolls-Royce relies on borrowed tech from parent company BMW; the Spectre's infotainment screen is on the smaller side (by modern standards) and runs generations-old iDrive software. The upside is that the touchscreen interface responds quickly to inputs, and both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto can be connected wirelessly. Voice commands, however, are somewhat hit-or-miss.

We like that the Spectre doesn't try to assault you with technology from the moment you open the door. There's no dash-spanning Hyperscreen like in a Mercedes and no overly colorful or complicated digital gauge cluster. The tech is simplistic, but it all works well. We imagine that's exactly what Spectre owners want.

Storage

How’s the storage? A lot of electric cars have extra storage under the hood because that's where the engine would go. But Rolls-Royce has a lot of electronic and mechanical equipment housed there, so that long bonnet doesn't hide a frunk. Instead, you're left with the relatively small trunk. Sure, it's nicely carpeted, but the actual usable space is on the small size. Something to consider when you're ordering your fitted set of monogrammed luggage, we suppose.

We'd appreciate more space inside for smaller items; the doors themselves are massive but the pockets are quite small. The rear seats are spacious, however. Just put your shopping bags back there.

Range and Efficiency

How are the range and efficiency? With 23-inch wheels, the Spectre has an EPA-estimated range of 266 miles. We got 281 miles on the Edmunds EV Range Test. BMW Group vehicle always tend to overperform, so this was to be expected. This sort of range seems appropriate for this type of car and battery size, especially given all the weight this ultra-luxury car carries.

Is the Spectre a good value? "Value" is a relative term when you're talking about a Rolls-Royce. This car starts around $420,000, and as tested, our Spectre rings up at $558,700. No one is pinching pennies or refinancing their home in order to park a Spectre in the driveway; if you want one, you're getting one, end of story. Instead, the value is what you get for the money: a car that looks like a million bucks, that drives like a dream, that you can customize to your heart's content. The Spectre feels worth every penny to us.

We knew the Spectre would be good — how could it not be? — but we didn't expect to be so overly impressed with the driving experience. The Spectre is genuinely enjoyable to drive, and not just because it's a fancy-pants full-size coupe with shooting stars built into the headliner and doors. Nothing else on sale today feels like a Spectre from behind the wheel, and when you're paying this level of coin for what is, effectively, a personal coupe, you want it to be special.

The best thing about the Spectre isn't that it, itself, is special. It's that it makes you, the driver, feel like the star you are.

Which Spectre does Edmunds recommend?

Since the Spectre is only currently available in a single trim level with a handful of options, you're left mostly to select exterior and interior color and styling. The choices are dizzying, and with enough money, you can also order off-menu to match your particular tastes.
