Reliable and Enjoyable
This was a first car purchase. It really was a great car to drive. The only difficulty was an air fan problem after six years of owning it. Well worth the purchase price and very reliable.
Great car!
I have maintained this car through out the last 7 years, it is in good shape and runs great. I really enjoy driving it. I plan on buying my 6th sentra when I am finished with this one. There have been NO wrecks in the car and I drove it off the lot w/12 miles on it. Six of those miles, were test driven by me.

Old Faithful
Aside from being extreme;y reliable (although the timing belt broke at about 110k miles) I feel extra safe in it. I was involved in 4 accidents in this car and it still goes like a pro. Now, 126k miles later-my car still runs like a new pro..
Great Car
My 1999 Nissan Sentra has been a great car. I use it to commute to work and school. I have been getting great mileage. If you are familiar with the Bay Area, I can make it from San Jose to San Francisco and back on only a quarter tank of gas. This is a very comfortable car.
Best Car Ever
I purchased this vehicle from a single owner. It is GREAT in the snow. It's well maintained and regularly gets 40+ MPG city and 50's MPG on the highway. I'm not sure how it's fuel rating is only shown as 29. Only major mechanical issues up to 150,000 miles have been 2 sets of struts, 1 water pump, and a clutch replacement. It's an absolutely amazing, reliable car.
Amazing
Can't deny love for this car! Great first car, original owner had it stored in garage. It only had 72,000 miles on it when bought! Prime condition, a lot of zing for small car!
Fun Little SR20DE
Wonderful car, with a peppy fun little 4cyl engine. With performance modifications this car is a screamer.
Nissan does not compare to Honda, Toyota or Subaru
I bought this Nissan new. It ran well and was very dependable...until the odometer turned 100,000. Then, magically, it became a money pit. Within one year, I replaced CV joints, tie rods, alternator, water pump...and then it developed an aversion to starting. That's when we parted ways.
1999 Nissan Sentra GXE
I find this car to be very dependable, economical, and fun to drive. However the body style (rear only) is not at all appealing in my opinion.
Great little car, cute.
This is my first car and I bought it at 6 years old about 5 months ago. It had no problems when I bought it and still has no problems although I've taken it on a several road trips since .. Pittsburgh to Philly, Philly to DC and back. It feels comfortable and is nice to drive and its small so its great for parking but not too small as to get intimidated on the highways. I love my car :)
practical and economical
I bought this car 2 years ago with 65,000 miles on it. It now has around 100,000 on it. I has never left me stranded, and never let me down. I've pushed it pretty hard on some long trips, and some times when I just want to have fun! But I maintain it regularly and meticulously. I've had lots of compliments on the car, for example: "that's a Sentra?! It doesn't look like a Sentra....., that's pretty cool!" I love a lot of features on the car, and its practicality. Recently it has cost me some money though, and I think that it must be one of those "luck of the draw" type of things. This is a good little car though, I'm not going to give up on it yet.
great except for cupholder
Love the car. Quick for pretty cheap. Very reliable. It has soft tires-great for grip, bad for longetivity and expensive.
Small But With a Punch
What can I say that would truly state what I think about this car? Small but fun! I got this car over my 200sx (1.6l engine). Reliable car, safe (well unless the driver makes it not so safe). The paint job is pretty good, I like the nice blue color of this car. Front looks good except for the grill, which is new for 1999 model. This car has nice stock rims and side skirts, looks great! I stuck a cold air intake, made the car sound like a v8 mustang :). I would like sticking more stuff in so that people would be surprised at what this "grandma car" can do. It could use a little more horses, but it will still take any civic/corolla :). Highly suggested car!
Nice little car...
In 75000 miles I have not put one dollar in non-maintenance repairs. Solid, fairly large subcompact car that handles well with nice performance and good fuel economy.
fast and fun
This car is fun to drive and very quick for what it is. It is a very reliable vehicle. No problem passing when needed as it is very responsive and quick.
Was okay until 165k miles
This car is ok. That's it. I got this car because somebody t-boned my 97 legacy wagon and wow what a difference. This car is slow and lacks remarkable power. I like this car but it has way too many drawbacks. The automatic (wouldn't let me select it) transmission is and has always been iffy. It never knows what gear to go into and it's not good at all for overtaking other cars on the highway. It eats brakes and I mean eats considering I had to replace the rotors twice within 4000 miles and that's an issue considering I'm a light driver. The distributer has also gone twice. I'd certainly go somewhere else with my money.
Great Car
I'll keep it short. The only thing I don't like is the location of the cupholder. And this is because, if using the cupholder, the CD/Tape/AM/FM stereo constantly gets turned off and on while shifting (5-speed). This wouldn't be a problem with an automatic, but in that case, the car would not be near as fun to drive. -=0D
10 years old and still going strong
I am selling my Sentra after driving it since 2002 (bought off a lease). Overall, it's been a super car: great gas mileage, no major repairs. Not the sportiest looking and very bare bones inside, but it's taken me many miles and been very reliable. A/C stopped working last summer (not fixed), trunk no longer openable by key, some rust on body. Had to fix clutch, A/C once before in 2002, brakes but other than that, no major problems.
Extremely Reliable Transportation
I bought my first Nissan, a 1999 Sentra GXE a couple years ago. It has been a great car. Freeway driving (only) has yielded 50+ mpg. Combined city and highway has averaged 36 mpg. It brakes very accurately and handles well. The 95-99 Sentras weren't great sellers, but it's hard to understand why. More comfortable than the Civic and Corolla.
great until 150,000miles
Not one problem until 153,000 miles. Drove great, then December 2008 my starter went out. After that was fixed I've had to replace the battery cables, and alternator. Right now it won't start and I can't figure out what it is. The cupholders stink, and forget about fitting 3 car seats in the back! The trunk rattled when I had 12" subs in there, but it sounded great when I fixed that.
1999 Nissan Sentra GXE limited edition
Got this car for my 19th birthday. very nice car just needs a couple of things. speed sensor went out. for only 115 hp it gets the job done. needs speakers. back passenger window is off. front right door dosent open from outside. Driver power window button is not working right. needs new front and back bumper, and paint but other than these problems car runs great for almost 200,000 thousand miles.
This Model Lives Up
I purchased my 1999 Nissan GXE new right off the lot. It handled great and fit my budget plus the warranty was decent. I added a rear spoiler and a nose mask to give it a somewhat sportier look. Other than basic maintenance (oil changes, new tires, etc.) I have yet to be let down by this car. And it has traveled quit a bit from state-to-state! Only issues: I had water leaking onto the front passenger driving mats when it rained heavily and the driver side power window died around 50000 miles. Neither was a major problem to fix. Most recently the key started sticking in the trunk (65000 miles) and the driver side visor broke (80000) but those are not major or costly issues to deal with.
Review after 5 years, 80k miles
I bought this car with 60k miles on it and now it has 140k. It's been good to me, but it has its quirks. I'm 6-2, 230, and I find this car comfortable. Its been a pretty reliable car too. The only breakdown was when my water pump went out. Beware that this car has trouble starting at high altitude. I need to put my foot on the gas when I start my car or it will stall and will not start up again. If I forget to put my foot on the gas when I start it I have to floor it and crank the engine for about 60 seconds. I've only forgotten to hit the gas about 3 times, so its not that big of a deal to me.
Perfect Teenage car!
This is it. This is the car for any first time drivers. This is the teen car! Nothing too fancy, but it gets you from A to B. The problems though was that I had a crack in the coolant pipe. I have an exhaust leak right now and it drags my rpm down because of it. The driver window is dying and I can't open the trunk with my key. Some rust spots here and there. My belt is making an awful squeaking noise and I think I'm going to have to change my alternator soon. In all this car holds up to the abuse of the teenage driver. Great gas mileage, great on highway, easy to negate in almost every tight spot. Its good car but not perfect....unless its for a teenager.
1999 Nisan Sentra
good review needs little bit lower in rear. needs bigger engine for kinda heavy car
Good car
The Nissan Snetra GXE Limitied edition is an excellent car and I have never had a mechanical problem save a sticky electric window. The drive from LA to SF is about a tank and a half and it's gear is set to greatest acceleration in third gear.
Great car for what it is
Good mileage, good ride, great turning radius, and comfortable. We've enjoyed it thoroughly. But it isnt perfect...
Love My Car
I love my Nissan! I don't have any problems with it and it's a blast to drive!!
I'll buy another Nissan
This was my second car. I bought it new 6 years ago, when I was a still a teen. Now I'm thinking of passing it on to my little sis because it has been very reliable, never a single mechanical problem and has great gas mileage.
Sentra SE Limited
The Sentra has been an ok little car. The alternator died once, leaving me stranded. Both keys have broken, one is still in the trunklid. Front passenger window motor is going dead. Eject button broke off of cd player. Muffler rusted apart. Also, just recently, the fan speed selector only works on 4, 1-3 do nothing. Despite those problems, it is still faster than my freinds Civic and Corolla. It has a sunroof, which I am ever thankful for. And keyless entry, and white faced gauges. And fog lights. The Sentra now has 140,000 miles on it, with me putting around 40,000 miles/year on it. Considering this, I think the car is holding up rather well.
1999 Sentra
Great car, requires little more than an oil change and tires. NEVER have had mechanical repair in FOUR YEARS. The brakes are not even worn down yet! It is a small car though .... thats my only gripe, cant really complain about that!
Great Value
I've owned this car for 60000. Repair costs? Front brakes, 2 wiper blades - that's all. Incredible build quality, no rattles/buzz after 5 years. Sufficient power. Plenty of accesories and hence great value with GXE limited.
122K, not a single problem!
Great little car!! My wife purchased a Limited Ed GXE new and I was not very thrilled. But after driving it for 4 years and 122K miles, I can say it was a very good buy. I should not admit this, but we have had no work done on this car except oil changes and tires. No tune up, no brake work, AC, no real maintenance. It hasn't seen a mechanic since 4K miles. No noticable interior flaws either. I'm 6'1 and fit rather well. All the knobs and buttons are still intact. We have since bought a new 02 P'finder and we have equal praise for it.
What an awesome car!!
I don't think it's possible for a car to be any more reliable. I bought it in 2000 with 34k on it. 4 years, 76,000 miles later, and not a single problem. Not one! Oil changes, and new tires are all that has been required. This little car has gone from Wisconsin to Montana and back, Wisconsin to New Mexico and back, and numerous trips to and from Colorado, once pulling a U-Haul trailer! I have been more than happy with my Nifty the Nissan. Does lack power, but with manual transmission, you can just shift 'er down for that extra get up... unless the A/C is on.... then power is simply not an option.
Happy Sentra Owner
This has been a great little car! I have had very little to repair. I have had to replace the starter, and fix a sticking left hand turn signal. I have almost 120,000 miles on the car. All other parts are original and I just got another compliment from the shop after my latest 30,000 mile auto maintenance. In addition, the gas mileage is quite good...hasn't lowered at all since the car was new! An added plus is the interior.....no rattles, and the upholstery looks great!
Great car.
My wife bought her Sentra Sedan SE brand new in 1999 and outside of two major trips to the shop since the purchase, this car has been a workhorse. We've driven it up and down the eastern seaboard with nary a problem. The engine is quick and quiet, steering is a little tight, but meaty which is good. The car did have some kind of degenerative wheel problem that almost ruined the car, but it has since been fixed and is as good as new. Problems are trite: the trunk won't open with a key, only the latch will open it. The car lacks headroom for taller drivers, and the cupholders are downright putrid. The car also needs a better center console and glove box. But other than that, great car!
Reliable and good handling although ugly
I bought this car used in 2002 and it's been very reliable, which is important for someone like me who knows squat about cars. Gas mileage is excellent. The only problems have been replacing the clutch cable, a/c leak, and a bit of rust. The seats are comfortable and the car is easy to maneuver. The heating and a/c come on quickly and work well. The cup holders are awkward because they block the radio and clock. It doesn't accelerate overly well and my friends tell me it's ugly (which it is), but it was a lot cheaper pound for pound than a Civic and frankly, a better investment.
Very reliable
This little car has been extemely reliable. It has had required very few repairs and has excellent gas mileage. This Sentra isn't the most stylish car, but I am very pleased with the car, overall.
A few significant problems
I bought this car brand new in 1999. A few annoying problems appeared while using it. First, my horn would go off without any warning while I was making sharp turns (especially, on very hot days). Second, I had to change brake drums after 5 years of driving it (my Toyota after 9 years did not have her brake drums changed yet). Third, some exhaust sensor broke down, and my orange Maintenance light would be constantly on. I did not fix it, since it would cost me money and wasn't critical to driving. So I'm pretty disappointed with the car overall. Frankly, I'll never buy a Nissan again. On a positive side, I had a really major car accident with a tractor trailer and I lived, so it's a safe car
My First Car
I bought this car new in 1999. It has made several cross country trips and taken me to work and back for 8 years. I have never been stranded anywhere. It has been a great, reliable, practical first car. It isn't really "fun to drive". I often joke that I have two hamsters under the hood and one of them is tired. If you have a drink in the cupholders, it will block your radio controls. Both the 1 and the 6 preset buttons broke off about 4 years ago. The cruise control works great, but the button has a hole in it where I've pushed it one time too many. Overall I've loved this car, but I'm excited to have enough money now to buy something with a little more luxury and style.
Good Rider
I have 122000 Mile in 4 years, i have had no major mechanical problems, this car has given me good support for last 4 years. Runs Good even at such high milage.
1999 Nissan Sentra GXE
I bought this car with 65000 miles on it. I put 30000 miles on it so far. It runs well, no problems so far. Gas mileage is good. This car is very reliable, I would recommend it to anyone who wants a cheap and reliable car.
Attached to this car.
I have had this car for about seven years and have only had little things go wrong with it until very recently. With only a few breakdowns in 7 yrs. I have to say it's usually very reliable. I haven't gotten around to putting it in the shop for this latest breakdown but I'm hoping it's only something minor. (It's never cost over $400 to fix before!) In the meantime I'm driving an SUV and missing my Nissan Sentra tremendously. I never realized how comfortable my Sentra was until I've had to drive that thing. I can't wait to get it fixed and back on the road. Terrific car!! It's perfect to drive around town or for a long trip but I hate to load groceries in it!
my sentra
It's a good car for what it is. It was fairly inexpensive, reliable and gets good gas milage.
Great car
I have had this car for 1 year and 5 months and have had only slight problems. I had to replace my struts and exhaust manifold gasket. I also had to replace the ac compressor after 100000 miles. Otherwise the car has been great. I will have to replace the cv boot. I love this car it has been great!!
180K and going
I bought this car used 2003, 91K and now I added 90K to it. Mean time, I took the car to the shop maybe 10 times or so. aircondition circuit $30, starter $200, PW window switch $100, exhaust leak 3 times, 250, front O2 $60. That is about it. Never stopped running, never fail to start, great for gas, and note that this care is the easiest car to change the oil filter. I do not think many people are interested in buying 99 sentra now, but I must say that you shuold by a manual shift, it goes OK over 2000 RPM, but if you really want to drive, you need to control the engine rev over 4000.
Overall a good buy
I bought this car 3 1/2 years ago when it was already 5 years old. I've had a few repairs done, nothing out of the ordinary for its age. The gas mileage is amazing, although when you have the a/c on it affects acceleration and braking.

Small & Reliable
I purchased this vehicle new back in 1999. I am surprised I still have it after 128,000 miles and still going. This car has been quite reliable with oil and trans fluid changes. As for the problems, the sun visor cracked and I swapped from the passengeer side onto the driver side. Also the driver's side power window push-down button malfunctioned. I opened everything and taped it to make it work. The engine oil is starting to drip very slowly right now. It must be the cranckshaft seal. I'll get to it someday. I can't deny the fact that it's a very reliable car for going from point A to B. In fact, I had owned 1989 Tercel and 1993 Civic. Sentra outperformed both in quality.
