Faulty steering column lock

Case #29057140 - My Cube has 52,000 miles and could not be started due to the well-documented steering column lock issue. My mechanic repaired it after a delay of several weeks, just waiting for the part from Nissan. Under service bulletin NTB11-057 I requested reimbursement. I spent a week playing a "customer service" dance. The "goodwill review" I was promised resulted in a blanket denial of coverage from a csr who stated that a service bulletin only covers one replacement, which was supposedly done in 2011. Maybe it was replaced, but the lock failed again, so what difference does that make? Unclear why Nissan would refuse to replace a defective part, especially when it is for a major operational system that affects customer safety. Does NIssan really not care if a woman gets stuck in a parking lot at 11 PM because her Cube won't start when the steering column lock fails without warning? Instead of fooling around with faux phone calls and emails masquerading as customer service, Nissan should just say they don't care if people buy their cars or not. I love my Cube, but this experience with Nissan is a deal breaker.

My 80-yr-old mother bought a Cube. She loves it. Easy to maneuver, super simple to park, fits nicely in the 2- car garage. Back door opens from the side - easy for her to open/close as she has shoulder replacements. Although not much storage room, it works for her lifestyle. Gets lots of compliments, an eye-catcher. I drive it more than she does. We took it from TN to FL, had a wonderful trip. So far, it's been reliable. Wheel covers are plain. I would like a sunroof, although the car gets hot in the sun, lets a lot of sunlight in through those big windows. Window visors are huge, not to my liking. Overall, I love it.

Poor quality - 2009 Nissan Cube 6 speed

I like the appearance of the car, it looks refreshing and innovative. However, I knew the CVT would be a major headache down the road, so I chose the 6 speed version. Unfortunately, other problems developed pre-maturely: the muffler and the exhaust pipe fell off due to a rusted connection at 45000 miles, 5 years. Replacing the entire assembly costs over $850, I have never owned any car with the muffler system lasting only 45000 miles or less than 5 years, and it costs so much to fix. To add insult to injury, during the hottest days of the season this year, the air conditioning failed. This is a poorly made car, with below average quality control. I believe this model was terminated last year. Need I say more ? But I have to say to myself, beauty is only skin deep !!

My 2000 BMW 323i was making everyone sad, except my auto mechanic. Listen, loved the look and ride of my BMW, but the cost of any repair even oil changes was ridiculous. Can you imagine a $120 oil change for a sedan? A new starter for $500? Radiator replacement $900? It's just stupid. My Cube gets me to and from work, it's clean, quiet and very fuel efficient. The BMW was too much drama and with the money I spent fixing it, I could have paid for my Cube. Lesson learned. Looking "cool" costs money and keeps you awake at night deciding whether to eat or fix your foreign sports car. Sorry, The Cube has lowered my stress levels and put money in my pocket--and it looks cool too without the drama!

I've owned this car for 12 years, almost 200k miles. What I'll remember: First family trip to Grand Canyon, with a family of 5, getting out to see the view, plus opening the back door so our dog could join us. Probably looked pretty comical to an onlooker. Parking any and everywhere, especially at the crowded beach, finding those convenient, tiny spaces that no one else can squeeze into. Tires that I forgot to rotate, that needed to be replaced early. Oil changes every 3-5k miles saved a lot on repairs. Brakes and batteries, every 80k or so. I think I paid for one tune up. Oh, I replaced the catalytic converter 2 years ago to pass smog. I've read a lot of reviews that many others have had problems with CVTs. Well I have an embarrassing secret. I have never ever changed or even looked at the transmission fluid! For me, it simply works. So did I get amazingly lucky with this particular car? Yes, it's finally showing it's age and finally needs some mechanical repairs. Yet it still goes on. I hope someday someone makes a simple box electric vehicle that is cheap and works as well as this car. Thanks for the memories. :)
