Been a great car!

I've had the car 11 years and it's been in the shop one time, water pump took out my timing belt. But I now have 273,500 miles on this baby with nothing more than routine maintenance. The 1.8L engine has plenty of pep with the 5 speed for rubber in a couple of gears. With mostly highway driving I've averaged around 38 mpg all year round, with 39+ in the warmer months and 37 in the winter when the gas companies give us their crap gas. Would surely buy another! Corners pretty well for a subcompact with stock suspension, very fun to drive!

Awesome Little Car

I bought this car brand new and have used and abused it ever since. I have 165,000 miles on it and don't intend on retiring it anytime soon! If you find one, buy it. It's great for college students and commuters. I've only had it in the "shop" once. This was at 55,000 and the repair was covered by the powertrain warranty. I bet I have spent less than $1000.00 bucks on maintenance, brakes and tires in the last 12 years. Only complaints: it needs new brakes about every 40,000 miles and the interior is starting to tear. I have a newer and "classier" car, but honestly I prefer to drive the Mirage. Now that gas is up so high. My friends are jealous!

Had it for 12 years now! Wow... Just oil changes, belts and routine stuff, never anything major. At 200k miles I am still running on the Original Clutch, CV Axles, CV Boots (yes!!). I have the 1.8L LS, 33+ mpg for the last 12 years! (mostly 70 to 80 mph).

I bought my mirage when I was in the air force. I drove it from Dover DE to Sayre PA every weekend for 4 years. I never put much much money in it. It is a very reliable car and the 1.8 with the standard trans. Gave it great speed and acceleration. It would scream to do 120 but it would do it. I wrecked it in 2002 and it just started to get surface rust, 8 years later. I am very pleased with this car.

This is a terrific car. Bought new and still going strong. Performance--5. Only 92 horsepower. Handles OK, a little suspect in inclement weather. Comfort-4. Fine in front. Fuel Economy-9. 30 mpg Fun to drive-1. A turtle can beat it off the line but that's not why you'd buy this car. Interior design-8. Controls easy to locate and use. Exterior design-2. Passersby won't look twice. Build quality--9. No signs of rust even with a Midwest existence. Backed into a cement lightpole standard and jarred the bumper pretty good but damage was far, far less than I expected. Reliability-10. Just terrific. Brake job a couple years ago but that's it as far as mechanical breakdowns.

Perfect First Car

I got this car when i first started driving. I bought it for a ridiculous amount 8 years ago and the only problem I've had was the power steering pump (easy fix) and its run perfect. Good car to learn how to drive with, very reliable, and very good on gas. It isn't a sports car by any means, but it has very good handling.

The only problems I've had with my Mirage is a rust problem with the back- end; water tends to accumulate in the trunk, with rust problems near the back end. Other than that it seems to be an extremely reliable little car.

The truth of the Mitsu Mirage

Although some people would think, " Oh, come on. Get something better than a Mirage!" The truth is this car has a legendary status in other parts of the world, known as the Lancer. The main diffirences are the engine, suspension, aero kit, and a lack of AWD. But, it is still a Lancer. It's beginning to seem a little easier to realize the potenial the car has.

My 95 Mirage was my first car. I bought it new when I graduated college. In the six years I have owned it, I have not had any problems. NONE. ZERO. ZILCH!!! Other than regular maintenance (belts, oil, fluids, brakes, tires, etc.) I have not done anything to this car. It's very fun to drive, has good power despite only a 1.8L engine, and gets excellent gas mileage - about 34-35 mpg on average. This is a good, reliable, and fun car with a decent body style and engine. I would recommend it!

I bought a 1995 Mirage brand new off the showroom floor. Had no problems for the first 2 1/2 years, but at 68,000 the rear seal begin to leak and with no warning the automatic transmission went out. It cost me $1200 to get it fixed. With the car being a LS coupe the insurane was a bit high

This is my second Mitsubishi (first was a pickup), and can't imagine buying anything else. Just turned 170,000 miles, and never had to do anything with it except very routine maintenance. Gas mileage has waned a bit with age, but still easily tops 35. Great pick-up given its small engine. Body in great shape for a car its age, especially considering it has spent its whole life in upstate New York. Only drawback is the leaky trunk - I can't seem to keep the rain out. Not sure why Edmunds.com editors have given the new models the thumbs-down, because this car has been the best for me.

Multi-use with Minimal Maintenance

Over 150000 miles were driven over long distances, most were in hot weather extremes. The car never had a break down nor required more than basic recommended maintenance (oil changes, tune ups, belt replaced at 100000 miles, valve gasket replaced), tires were replaced twice, brakes were replaced at around 90000 miles, and it just got a new battery. The car was used for a variety of purposes: rough camping for from 3 to 7 days; hauling wood/lumber; mountain, desert, and dirt roads; and vacations with lots of luggage - and took it all in stride.

This has been a great reliable car. Although it lacks power of any sort, it has been a dependable ride. The interior is very cheaply made and the seats have not faired very well, more from a poor design than anything else. The engine still runs very well and it gets moderate gas mileage in town but improves greatly on the highway. This car has been very good to us.

The car has been really good on gas mileage, and it has worn well as far as the engine,no major repairs have been neccessary at all. The one problem ,check engine light kept coming on,but I found out that this was not a problem with the engine, but with a sensor. The car has had two accidents.one in the right front bumper area which was repaired. Another in the left side door and wheel areas which were also repaired by an approved body shop. No other areas of major concern.

This car is a little lack-y in the field of acceleration, but once she gets up to speed she holds it with confidence. I have the s coupe with a 1.5 SOHC engine, slightly tweaked pushing about 100 hp on a good day, and she hauls when she needs too. Imagine an engine going 4800rpm at about 80 mph down I95 - yes this is my mirage. But no need to worry she hasn't given in at all. I got this car busted and now it is the love of my life, wouldn't trade it for anything else ;-)

Right from the start my '95 Mirage didn't drive well in the rain. After 6 monthe the seat covers started to fall apart, but the worst was an acceleration problem where it would suddenly have zero power on take off, leaving you vulnerable to serious accidents an embarrassment! I've spoken to several other Mitsubishi owners (not just of the Mirage) and have heard similar horror stories. This was a problem no one I knew has ever managed to get fixed.

I bought my Mirage new in 1994. From day one this car was a pleasant surprise. The only problem area was with the brakes and rotors that seemed to be echoed for this model. I kept up with the scheduled maintenance and it lasted to 331,000 miles. The only proof of the mileage was the driver's seat which was worn (solved by seat cover) and the odometer. It was totalled in motor vehicle accident in the rain and I have been trying to find one to replace it ever since, otherwise the miles would have kept on ticking. I can truly say I got every penny's worth!

Reliable little car

Bought at 44K, drove for 8 yrs, sold at 98K (only because car was unpractical for transporting old people + 6'4" husband) Only major repairs were two wheel bearing replacements, one A/C bearing and timing belt (suggested normal maint. @ 60K). Gas cap door unlock mechanism never worked and later door didn't either. Rain leaked into trunk. Trunk latch didn't work well. Somewhat noisy ride from rattles. Some parts of the car were cheaply made, e.g., thin balsa type wood used as the trunk floor to cover donut tire.

I've had my Mirage for 5 years now. The worst things that happened are the fact that the motor and the transmission died on me at the same time. The starter died on me too and it took me months to find someone who could fix it. The starter is in an akward location, so it wasn't very easy to fix. The new transmission has the tendency to slip sometimes and cause the car to cut shortly after you put it in gear. Not very much room in the trunk or backseats if you are toting a baby around like me. This could be an isolated incident because I drove the heck out of my Mirage all the time. Nevertheless, I'm selling it for something with more room.

This was a really dependable car, and required nothing except regular oil, filter, spark, tire changes until about 150k when I had to replace the clutch, timing belt, and master cylinder all around the same time. Now it's 250k and reached the end of its life.

For most of my life, 16 years, this 1996 Mitsubishi Mirage sedan has been with my family. We call her Gert (short for Gertrude) and she's been the most dependable car anyone can ask for. She's 18 years old with over 303 thousand miles on her and she's just now starting to go. Her transmission is still great, her engine is too, mostly. The only problem is that now she's leaking oil. (once more, after 18 years of relatively heavy use). If you're thinking about buying one, do. It'll be one of the best investments of your life
